In addition to Gracie Abrams, Paul Mescal has been spotted out with Ayo Edebiri and Natalie Portman in recent months.
New romance alert or just friends? Gracie Abrams was spotted enjoying a meal and looking cozy with Paul Mescal while in London.
The duo can be seen eating at BRAT restaurant in photos published by TMZ, with the Irish actor reaching over the table to touch the "Us" songstress' face at one point. The outlet reports that the duo ordered a selection of small sharing plates during their outing.
The sighting comes on the heels of Abrams' The Secret of Us album drop. The 24-year-old singer's sophomore effort features a coveted collaboration with Taylor Swift after she served as one of the opening acts on Swift's blockbuster Eras Tour.

i personally don’t think gracie abrams is a nepo baby, sure she has a well known dad, but i don’t think that anyone who likes star wars only likes gracie because of her dad. i didn’t even know she was the daughter of jj abrams until i started doing more research on her, and he wasn’t the reason i continued listening. the money from her parents definitely helped her get a head start in her music, but her writing and voice is what makes people continue to listen to her, not her dad. i think once people know she is the daughter of jj abrams they put her in the category of nepotism, but her career is completely different to what her dad does. sorry for the rant, these are just my thoughts on gracie getting called a nepo baby.

@@almondypeanut yeah, but there's plenty of other nepo babies whose parents are in different fields. Like Willow for example, whos dad and more are actors. Also, it may not be clear on the surface, but Gracie has the popularity and has been given the opportunities because of who her dad is.

the whole "if you disagree with my fav's behaviour or dunk on my fav's music it's misogyny" argument is REALLY annoying. lke I get there's definitely wisdom to the idea that shitting on things women/teen girls tend to like just because is bad, but let's not pretend there isn't legitimate beef to be had with some of these artists/movies/books/whatever.

    • @carolitoffana

Ok, but Drake was literally outed for being a Pedo and it didn't received half of the critics and attention that an average female artists gets for literally anything..in fact I would say that most, if not all the "music commentators" seemed to brush off the topic entirely to focus on the "beef"...I'm sorry, it may be annoying but it's very true the double standards.

@@carolitoffana yes you're right and I definitely agree that women and the media and art we create is judged to MUCH higher standards than that of men, but that still doesn't mean that all criticisms of art/media made by women, or women's behaviour, is necessarily misogyny. it can be hard to delineate fair criticism from misogyny though, this is absolutely true, especially when misogynists have figured out how to dog whistle so effectively by codifying their hatred as "critical analysis" lol usually I just try to engage them in good faith until they start using words like "woke agenda" and out themselves.
additionally, if the criticism is "Twilight can be seen as problematic because it romanticizes an abusive relationship which could be harmful to young girls" or "Taylor Swift needs to be held accountable for her use of private jets and emissions if she wants to be regarded as a progressive figure", like that's 100% in my mind not a misogynist argument.

@@carolitoffanaRight. Taylor swift for example, it’s like a trend to openly dislike her, and while there are multiple valid reasons to not like her as a person, most people’s reasonings are because of her music. I ain’t a fan personally but the way some ppl talk about her is just icky like omg 😭. I don’t see anyone hating male artists as much as they apparently despise some of these female ones.

    • @cocoooo222
      @cocoooo222 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

And to add to this, the people who don’t like her for her “problematic actions” will at the same time continue to support other artists (especially male ones) who have done way worse. Just picking and choosing and it pisses me off like do you really care for her problematic tendencies, or smth as simple as not liking her music, or do you just love hating on successful women with no actual reasoning behind it? Again, there’s a reaosn to dislike the woman, but lets not act like alot of the hatred towards her is just plain old misogyny. The some things these middle aged men say about her on twitter is so sickening and everyone just allows it bc “her music is bad” 🤦‍♀️.

The whole "if you don't like female artist you hate women" argument is really sounding like white feminism to me, i never hear this defense used for anyone that isn't thin, and white, and rich and attractive. That doesn’t mean that people don't ever hide their dislike for women under their dislike for Taylor swift or twilight, but its an overused excuse. Especially with all the literal racism in Twilight. Also, not all women are feminine, so someone not liking femininity is not necessarily misogyny, though i know it can be. However, femininity is not something that women as a whole chose, it was pushed onto us. That doesn’t make it bad of course, i personally prefer feminine stuff, but it isn't inherent to women, yet a lot of 'progressive' people nowadays acts like it does.

I think her sudden blowup does have a lot to do with her connections as a nepo baby. I’m not saying she is or isn’t talented (I’ve never heard one of her songs) but I do definitely think the constant press coverage of her feels very insider driven and not a reflection of an organic growth. This is probably my biggest issues with a lot of nepo babies as they receive a disproportionate amount of mainstream media attention based solely on who they are and not what they’ve actually done, like every single time a nepo baby has a new project, the media jumps on the news immediately regardless of whether it’s truly newsworthy. While self-made artists don’t have that same privilege and instead have to earn any recognition or mention in the press that they receive, which can take years of building up an underground audience, as they have to create their own buzz in other to garner any media attention and yet nepo babies have a built-in advantage since the “buzz” surrounding them and reiterated by media coverage is already there from the start and based off of their name/connections.

When I heard Anthony Fantano say that Gracie Abrams’ lead single off her new album sounded like her doing a pretty decent Lorde impression, it completely changed how I listen to her music. I know that may seem shallow, but holy shit, he’s right. Like, I know there’s the whole “cUrSiVe sInGiNg” meme but holy shit, the stuff I’ve heard from Gracie’s new album sounds like Melodrama rejects, and like… I adore Melodrama, I think it’s the besto op album of the 2010s and in the top 5 pop albums of the entire 21st century so far, but if I want to listen to Melodrama, I’ll just…. Listen to Melodrama???? On the whole nepo baby thing, I completely understand where you’re coming from when it comes to people picking and choosing how they use or weaponize the term. Like, prime example, my former friend and I really really love Maya Hawke and we used to call her “our comfort nepo baby”. She’s truly the only nepo baby (that I know of, though I guarantee there’s a lot of others) that I’m truly like a diehard fan of. Good for her tho. Since then every time she's brought up I'm like 'oh, lost guy's daughter'. Either way, I guess my indifference is also because I was never able to connect to her music or lyrics. She's a decent performer and put on a pretty good show at my city, but her music just isn't my thing I guess. She seems like she has potential tho

@@jaiweenie In my case, I've known of JJ Abrams for a long time, and when I found out about Gracie I didn't make the connection because that's a pretty common last name, I only found out through twitter late last year. But regardless, all connections in the world aren't going to work if the product isn't relatively good, and I believe it is. Nothing great, nothing awful, mid but enjoyable to me. I'd say her connection to Taylor has helped even more, that's the only reason I listened to her (cute yet nothing special) new album.

The music is fine, I like some of her previous stuff and think this album is mid if not below average. But considering how insanely difficult it currently is to break through in the music industry, mid is not getting the visibility Gracie gets. At all. It’s okay if you enjoy the music, nepotism doesn’t equal bad, but it’s okay to have some awareness and admit that you only know who this girl is because of her father. And I don’t mean you know who her dad is so you know who she is (because I know people will think thats what I mean) but how much she has been promoted and the opportunities she has gotten are due to her father.

genuinely and not even to be mean to Gracie Abrams, this video is literally only the second time I’ve heard of her. She’s just not the style of music getting pushed to me by my algorithm. I can guarantee that Anthony Fantano and his ilk only know her because they seek out and listen to as many new releases from as many artists as possible because that’s their job. I think the thing with the current music scene and algorithms is that every artist feels like a Lady Gaga or Madonna or Beyoncé or Rihanna level of cultural omnipresence because you’re seeing millions of other fans. Before the internet when an artist had millions of fans, it meant that their fame was wide spread, that 100s of millions of people had heard of them and 1% were die hard devotees. But now it’s easy to push someone exclusively to the niche millions of people who are most likely to like them and not bother with the people who won’t. Now if you’re not a fan it’s probably not because you’re a hater, it’s probably because you literally have never heard of the person.
I think this is the real heart of the stan anger. When you believe something is so vastly and profoundly omni significant and someone else questions that significance, you get angry. It’s a similar psychology to religion and politics. It’s a different kind of anger than when you encounter someone who’s just a hater of your fave. To Anthony Fantano, she’s just another filler artist in the spotify catalogue.

Never forget back in 2017 when he called one of rapper wale’s song a cash grab attempt at the caribbean dancehall wave when it was actually a afro-beat based song and it worst bc wale is a Nigerian American who’s incorporate afro beat prior to the 2017 song he reviewed. As a big fan of Gracie Abrams, i don't disagree with any point made in this video, but id like to address a few. I think stan culture can be weird, but i think cancel culture is worse, it is unnecessary and lacking in empathy. It also gives me a very big headache. I don't like throwing around the word "misogynist" but i can kind of understand where the fans are coming from. In society, generally, things that are viewed as "for women" are pretty looked down upon (shopping, clothes, art, etc.) another big example would be Taylor Swift. seriously, the hate she gets is ridiculous, its just people finding any reason to hate her and its pretty frustrating. since Taylor and Gracie are so closely associated and pretty similar id assume that's the "misogyny" part. Gracie is a nepotism baby but i don't know how she's faulted for that? She wanted to pursue music and also her dad is famous, of course she had help getting there and i think that's a great thing and she's using it to her advantage in a productive way. The Finn Wolfhard controversy is obviously upsetting but it's not right to call her a predator, like, that's not even what that means?? And genuinely, critics not liking things that you like shouldn't be that big of a deal. I like a lot critically panned shit and it's ok i swear😂

I feel like in both ways, the ones criticizing and the ones who can't take criticism are becoming toxic. There are some good criticisms for the albums but they get shadowed by the haters who in name of criticism just hate instead. And the stans being defenders in recent years have become sensitive to even least bad or good criticism.

I agree wholeheartedly with Anthony... And I am gay man who almost solely listen to female musitians since I was a child... (Inc. Taylor). This "If you don't like X you are misogynistic" is lame like, sometimes people will listen to a song/album and will not like it, for the sound of it alone. And in the case of Gracie, people knowing her connections makes this situation worst because people who didn't like the album (which is most people) will think "wow, a smaller more talented musitian would never get to work with those producers so early in their carrers.. and here Gracie is.." and I think it's completly normal to be upset with injustices like that.

Making music is the least harmful thing that a kid of a multimillionaire/billionaire can do. I'd rather nepo babies to make tons of mid albums than becoming the mogul of an oil company or a CEO of some unnecessary tech startup exploiting the working class.

Am I the only one who thinks Gracie Abrams sounds like Lorde? I think we, as a society, need to speak out against the “Indie Girl” voice. That Vine about the guy doing the bit about an Indie Girl giving a tour of her kitchen was more accurate than we realized 😂😭

As someone who is a big fan of Taylor Swift and a big fan of J.J. Abrams, Gracie Abrams has rarely crossed my mind. I sometimes forget she's Abrams' daughter until I look at her face and go "Oh yeah, she has the same goofy smile he does!"
Had no idea she and Paul Mescal were even connected. Shows how much I miss out on. Lol

There's no excuse for being 18 and make sexual jokes about a 14 years old. The rest of it is pointless chatter but the comment about Finn Wolfhard does ick me. I'm the same age as he is. So at the time she made that comment, it would be the same time that weird 18-years olds were trying to flirt with a 14-years old me in discord. No excuse for that type of behaviour. (Specially posted in public. By someone who was a public figure due to being the daughter of a famous director).
Also, I listened to her album and with the exception of Risk and Closer to You, I thought it was good. But it kinda pisses me off that Taylor is a feat there. I think Taylor is just too famous to be a feat in some obscure artists album (also, tbh, Taylor was the only reason why I heard the album and I think that's the marketing, actually: make people listen by having Taylor Swift). Had no idea she was J. J. Abrams daughter.

It’s sorta while seeing his career as Super 8 was very much Spielberg and now he just does lots of IP films in the style of other people.

People keep forgetting that Miley Cyrus is a nepo baby. I think an artist who makes good music is fine even if they are a nepo baby. That said, everyone's taste differs. So it's reasonable for someone to dislike her songs and attribute her success to nepotism.
I like Gracie, I don't like this album because it was boring and bland. I personally think her previous EPs and Album have better songs than The Secret of Us. This is an album where I think she's genuinely TRYING to sound like Taylor Swift IMO. I don't think it works, definitely think she'll keep improving though.
