Here's a remake of my song, Jórsalanám, written and performed by me in Old Norse. It’s the first song I wrote that became quite popular. The song details the events of the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099 from the perspective of a Scandinavian crusader - people from all over Europe responded to the call of Pope Urban II, with varying degrees of success. Marching through Anatolia and Syria, taking lands as they went, the Crusaders reached Jerusalem and, after a hard won siege, captured the city, instituting the Kingdom of Jerusalem. You might notice that the intonation is a little different in this remake to the original, and, among other things, that’s because I used to basically ignore the initial stress that should be placed on Old Norse words. I’ve also improved the lyrics in some places. The name of the song, Jórsalanám, literally means "The Taking of Jerusalem". My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence. I do not own any of the artworks in this video and all credit goes to the original artists. Hope you enjoy the song. I have an ancestor under our surname who was a Crusader during the First Crusader. Godfrey granted him a family crest, which we still possess the design today, as it was just recently discovered again in a book published by an ancestor in 1893. To be able to enjoy this song under an HD remake is fantastic!!
@SkaldBard I wish I could post an image of it, it's a crimson crest with a white buck/stag in the center. The family lived in the Franconian region of Germany/HRE, directly in the path of Godfrey when he begun his journey towards the Holy Land.
Don't get me wrong, this hd remake is absolutely epic, but for me personally the vibes of the original is better, it sounds like someone snuck a motorola razr in a longhouse somewhere in 1100 A.D. Niðaróss while a bard is performing.
Privately, I imagine that this is really a song commissioned by King Sigurd I of Norway, the first European monarch to pick up the Cross with his sword.
This is amazing! I am a huge fan of these remakes. I know it's technically the same song, but is there any chance of a remake of the Latin version as well? This one is of course perfect, but the Latin one is very dear to my heart as well.
