Jórsalanám in Latin [Crusader Song] - De Expugnātiōne Hierūsalēm | The Skaldic Bard

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 4 ก.ย. 2023
- Here’s my translation into Latin (and my performance) of my most popular song, Jórsalanám, this time in mediaeval Latin. The song details the events of the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099. The Crusaders won the siege and instituted the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
As a Catholic and given the preeminence of Latin at the time of the siege, I felt that it had to exist in my glorious liturgical language. It was good fun translating from Old Norse to Latin; they’re more similar than one would give them credit for upon first glance!
The name, Jórsalanám, literally means "The Taking of Jerusalem". The Latin name is De Expugnātiōne Hierūsalēm.
The epic picture is called "Kingdom of Heaven" by Sergey Sezonov.
Many thanks also to Louis J for his comments on the translation.
Hope you enjoy. Please leave a comment, like and subscribe if you enjoyed it!

Godefridus ad Portam Herodis pergit,

Nunc pugnāmus Saracēnōs.
Interfecti in terra iacent.
Non refert utrum revertāmur necne,

Defectus spei in cordibus bellātōrum.
Terra sicca et aspera erat.
Virīs in lōrīcīs summa aestāte

Mīlia virōrum ab austro veniunt,
ignāvissimī fūgērunt.
Ademarius appāruit Petrō.
Vocāvit in peregrīnātiōnem.
Ad Montem Olivarum

As a Protestant Christian who's considering converting to Catholicism, this is my favorite song of yours. All of your songs are masterpieces but your ones in Latin and Crusader songs deeply resonate with my soul and heart. The Crusaders deeply inspire me to always have faith in our Holy Father, no matter my adversary or tribulation. These men traveled across ocean and land and gave everything they had to reclaim God's kingdom. Their lesson and their example strives in the hearts of all brothers and sisters in Christ. As a brother in Christ, I thank you for giving me such an incredible song to honor our faith and the Crusaders of old with. God bless you, Bard
God bless you, my friend - I am very touched by your kind words. I can only say that the beauty of our ancient Catholic faith is a gift to humanity. I would certainly encourage you to pray long and hard on the matter, and I will pray that you come home to the Church one day and revel in its glorious history, traditions and truth
Thank you for your words of support, broþor. Just yesterday I was having an argument with someone who was saying the Crusaders weren't true Christians and that the Catholic Church is a fraud. The way I see it, the Catholic Church was specifically used by our Father to give all men a chance to find God. Martin Luther was correct in pointing out the flaws within the church but as someone who grew up in Protestantism, I can confidently say that we're just as bad, if not worse than the Catholics of the 1580s. So yes, I believe with all of my heart that the Catholic Church is God's gift to all men who wish to honor God in old Christian traditions and ways of worship. I always feel closer to God when walking through a Cathedral, singing in Latin than I do in a Protestant church. It seems to me that the Cathedrals were deliberately constructed to let God flood the building and the voices of singers resonate in every corner. I can only describe it as heavenly and it makes me deeply proud to be Christian. One day, my friend, I shall join the Catholic Church as a proud and humble servant and son of Jesus Christ, and I will be glad to be part of such an ancient and historic body.
Also I hope to learn the form of Latin you sing in this song. I believe it is called Ecclesiastical Latin? I'll be moving to Germany and I suspect I will be able to learn it there but do you have any advice on the matter?
You should consider Orthodoxy.
@@EnglishOrthodox i listen to Orthodox sermons from Father Spyrdon but I have no connection with that church. I'll stick with the church of Rome
@@EinDeutscherPatriot620 you don’t need a connection, the church is actually growing pretty quickly in the west.

Majd Lilleh !
As a Latino i feel really proud of the Holy Crussaders , a lot of our Saints were crussaders and i pray to them really offten 🙏🏻✝️
Only person you should pray to is Jesus Christ
@@servantofaeie1569 Hmm, a protestant listening to a latin song? Lol
@@lukefriesenhahn8186 I like languages and songs in other languages.
@@servantofaeie1569 false, you go only to Christ for salvation and you are not to pray to the dead, when you pray to a saint you are asking them to help you or pray for you or both, Christ also prayed to Moses at the top of the hill. Christians have prayed to the saints ever since Christ himself did it. If you want sources the look up when Christ speaks to Moses in the Bible, google will tell you the exact verse and clear anything else up. (Btw. Christ offers eternal life so if you go to heaven then you are not dead so you can be prayed to)
@@Alexthegrandest1900 Christ can do it because He's God. Christ offers eternal spiritual life, not eternal physical life in this age. If you physically die, you should not be prayed to. If you pray to those who have passed on, they can't hear you and all that does is invite demons.
@SkaldBard, you're actually creating a subgenre and a corpus of songs celebrating Late Antique and Medieval Christianity in a mixed way, both modern and old-fashioned. I appreciate that. This could make for a great album.
Thank you, my friend - I do feel that this style of music is kind of unexplored so I'm glad to be pioneering it in some way. I think of it as a sort of neo-folk
@SkaldBard, keep doing it. This kind of music is a thing nowadays. Many people are creating music inspired by history. Yours is especially good.

“The blood of heroes is closer to the Lord than the ink of scholars and the prayers of the pious.”
- Julius Evola
I have no idea where Evola pulled this from, and neither does the scholar Hans Thomas Hakl who is to my knowledge the only academic expert on Evola. It is supposedly (Evola himself seems to make that quite clear) quoting the Muslim Tradition, but no such passage exists, at least not within the Qur'an. In fact, it is likely that Evola mistranslated an actual passage from a hadith that reads: *"The ink of scholars is weighed on the Day of Judgement with the blood of martyrs and the ink of scholars outweighs the blood of martyrs."*
@@OlavHuitfeldt That or he was purposefully flipping it because he disagreed with the hadith.
@@fiddlesticks7245 I don't think so, he seems to be quoting it as an authority:
"Thus, in Islam, ‘holy war’ - jihad - and ‘the path of God’ are interchangeable terms. The one who fights is on the ‘path of God’. A well-known and quite characteristic saying of this tradition is, ‘The blood of heroes is closer to the Lord than the ink of scholars and the prayers of the pious.’ " - Metaphysics of War
Spoken like a thoroughly corporeal man with no spiritual sense. The earthly life is a spiritual battleground, in which scholars and the pious wage war. A "hero" who has no piety and hates wisdom has lost the spiritual war and failed to transcend his mortality. All his great acts are mere vanities. True heroism is piety enjoined to wisdom.
@Matthew-wl8tk good point. But I think there's certain wisdom that can only be attained by heros. Not to say scholars or the pious are without wisdom.
You should do a song for St. George in Anglo Saxon or St. Patrick in Medieval Irish when their patron Saint day comes next year.

Í tímakröfum, þar sem endurljósin vefa,
Skýr seðill af tíma, Bohemond, hraust ok drengiligr.
Frá Norrœnu vaggi, þar sem örlög önduð,
Til austur löndanna, þar sem sólin skartar í sælu.
Fæddr í ætt Hauteville's kröftugra,
Bohemond stóð upp, ljósasteinn í myrkri.
Antioch's kall, djúpráð örlög,
Í faðmlagi Levant, þar sem arfleifð hans krunast.
Þvert hrímuglaðra víga, sverð hans söng,
Antioch's hersir, í brynju af silfri.
Byzantísk sambönd, stjórnmálaleikur sannur,
Bohemond's sýn, yfirráðandi á framkomu.
Í eldferð kristsmanna, með fánar breidda,
Hann hogg sinn sögu, um heiminn dreifði.
Frá vargǫngum standandi til sigraungra,
Bohemond's ævintýri, sem morgunsól í dagroða.
Með ljónum hróar, í riddara skraut,
Hann leiði lið sitt, þar sem dagur og nótt.
Sannvaldur yfirvaldi, í fjarlægri heimsvist,
Bohemond's stjórn, nöfnun þar sem náttúra sé list.
Silki ok gull, skreyttu hans herrdómi,
Þar sem trubadúrar endurljóma í borgarvöllum.
Vís völtur, með spennandi sjón,
Bohemond's stjórn, ein sjálfgefna leiðangr.
Frá Apúlíuskaga til fjarlægra landa,
Bohemond's arfleifð þenst æ eilíflega.
Kristsmanna brynja, kyssað af austan sandi,
Hans nafn etsað í þræðum sögunnar.
Því láttu skáldin vefa, í langsum erindi,
Sagan um Bohemond, í sterku endurljóma.
Hjarta ljóns í riddara sniði,
Í tímas annulum, hann hǫgg sitt risti.

Et dussions-nous subir un long martyre,
Tiens nos coeurs droits quand faiblirons nos corps.
This is awesome.
Hey! I love your music, man. You should try singing one of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, they are beautiful, specially the 'Strela do Dia'. God Bless and keep the good work.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Was thinking on what to do in CK3, heard this song and decided that theres not enough christians in the world
I am a religious sunni muslim from turkey. I love your work both about pre christianity nordic era and about chiristian heritage of nordic area aswell. I would be happy when europe is rid of SJW virus and became christians once again.
It was a great confrontation - I hope it will never happen again/Это было славное противостояние - надеюсь оно никогда не повторится

Hey, can you perhaps recommend someone who does things like you but in German? I'm learning the language of my ancestors and would really appreciate it. Also, great song.
Hey, thanks. I'm afraid I don't know of anyone who does that specifically, but I'll try make some Old German stuff going forward :-)
I suggest Dr Ludwig He Basically fathers all Kinds of German Songs from all Times and collabs with some singers Like "der Michel" or " Karl Sternau" to create new Songs.
Do you mind if I use this as soundtrack in my youtube video? Within this video, the Pope will declare a crusade against the nation of my channel's namesake.
