Again by popular demand, here’s the remake of my song Harald Hardrada, composed and performed by me, based on Snorri Sturluson's Saga of Harald Hardrada. Harald Hardrada (lit. Harald the Harsh-Ruler - there are many interpretations/possible translations of this name, but I think Harsh-Ruler is probably the best) was, essentially, an absolute chad. Of all the Norwegian kings and heroes from the sagas, he’s probably my favourite. He achieved and did more in his 50-year life than most people could only dream of doing in several lifetimes. For the purposes of the song, I’ve picked out some of the highlights of his life as told in the saga. He fought with his half-brother St Olaf II at Stiklestad aged only 15, went east to Kievan Rus and Constantinople not long afterwards and quickly became the chief of the Varangian Guard for the Emperor. In this role, he fought many wars (too many to include in one song), but his mightiest achievements in this role were probably against the Bulgarian uprisings (which is how he gained the name “Bulgar Burner” - how friendly!). He fought the Saracens in the Middle East and Africa, visited all the Holy Sites in Palestine, became the King of Norway and beat back the Danes and Swedes, all the while composing some wonderful Skaldic poetry. Then, if all that wasn’t enough, he tried his hand at invading England with Harold Godwinson’s treacherous brother, Tostig. This appears to have been a step too far, as he was killed early in the battle by an arrow to the windpipe. My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence. Lyrics in description. Thanks for the support, as always.
@@SkaldBard I just realized that I only know of two trios of kings that died in a rapid succession while changing the history of mankind forever, they are these 3 from the saga of 1066 and the ones in the battle of the 3 kings

I kid you not when I tell you that I squeled like a fangirl when I saw this in my notifications. This is my favorite song you have made, mostly because Harald Haldrada is just one badass figure from history. I'm guessing you are going to be going through a lot of your old songs and remastering them. I would love to hear some of your old work with this quality, plus, I'm sure it is easier than composing completely new songs lol. Cheers!
Haha, awesome. Yeah, I like some of my older stuff but the sound quality is pretty poor, so I'm picking some of the more popular ones to redo. I'm working on a big project at the moment but will get back to making new stuff soon :-)

I hate how Assassins Creed has become shit, there could be such a sick game set in the Byzantine Emperor based around the Varangians, just like there SHOULD be a game about the Sicarii, but you would have to meet Jesus in that game, which is why Ubisoft would never make it. That’s a game I have on the back burner, (the game based on the Sicarii) because I’m primarily focused on my game built upon European folklore, mythology and history called Fae, but once this game is done, Sicarii is next up. Harald Hadrada’s life is so off the walls, he’s like “the world’s most interesting man” of the Middle Ages.
Since discovering this channel, it amazes me how much I notice entomology now. Also, as a side note, I'm listening to the Eragon series on Audible. I noticed the Elven language seems to be derived from old English and Norse! Listening just now, I noticed the words for noble and empress are honorifics used by the author in Eragon to describe social rank.
I come from Sicily. My land has long been a witness to the greatness of the Norman People who arrived here and made this land militarily and navally powerful, rich and feared. There are countless Norman fortresses, strongholds, castles, churches, cathedral and donjons here in Sicily. Even the oldest royal residence in Europe present here in Sicily is called "Palazzo dei Normanni" that is palace of the Normans, and was in fact the royal residence of the Powerful Norman Sovereigns of Sicily. We Sicilians are honored to have been governed and guided by such great Warriors and Statesmen.
I’m ethnically gothic along with multiple other varieties of Germanic (including multiple Norman lineages) Celtic, and Aryan, it’s crazy to me that my ancestors who were Gothic, then Lombards and finally Normans all fought for and ruled large parts of Italy at various times, and yet I have no Italian/Latin genetic contributions, despite having small amounts of Anatolian and Persian genetic contributions. I’m around 80% Northern and Western European with most of the remainder being Aryans from the Pontic-Caspian steppe from the Sintashta Culture (one of my direct patrilineal ancestors is one of the chariot kings from one of their burial sites) and tiny admixtures from various offshoots of these main stem ethnicities.
@@Thor-Orion I know almost nothing about my genetic origins, the only thing that gives me hope is the fact that 15-20% of the DNA of the Island of Sicily comes from the Normans, particularly in the western part of the island. As it happens, I come from that area but unfortunately I don't know for sure my origins.
@ruggeroferrara could the Norman's really have left such a big impact on Sicily. No doubt people have Norman heritage, but up to 20% for half the island seems unsupported. In eastern Sicily the major genetic component would be Greek, in western Sicily, a mixture of Italic, Greek, and Phoenecian
I wish a remake of those songs, in the mystic, slow and solemn tempo of eastern orthodox songs, with choir of bass, - something like Cesnokov's basso profundo, or Bulgarin Megaloschemos ...would be epic
Unfortunately he got a bit reckless in his invasion of England, leaving a sizeable chunk of his army to guard his fleet as well as leaving their armours behind. The English army catching them by surprise. Imagine if he had become king of England as well; it would truly have made a legendary person even more legendary. His escape from Constantinople is also epic as well. I also wonder if we will ever see another King Harald of Norway again after Harald V.
Hey skaldbard just an idea. I listen to Dr Ludwig he a german folk channel. He has a song called die Eisen Faust am lausenschaft . You could do that one in old saxon. It's not to long of a song.
That's a great idea, only Old Saxon wasn't spoken by the time the orders of the Teutonic Knights was founded - maybe in Middle Low German or something instead
So I play For Honor and not long after I'd started listening to the original version of this song, they released a new weapon set for Highlander called the "Traitorous Hofdingi" set. Because of this song, I actually knew what that meant!
So I’m working on a fantasy game very heavily focused on European history and mythology, I was wondering if you would be interested in being involved with the making of the soundtrack?
One of my favourite songs of yours. I love both Harald Hardrada and Harold - and by that I mean both the historical figures and the songs you made about them. Btw are you going to remaster that one song in which you use three languages - Old English, Old Norse and Greek?
