Sigurd the Crusader - Viking Crusader Song [Old Norse] HD Remake | The Skaldic Bard

- Here's a remake of my song Sigurd the Crusader. I've decided to remake a lot of my earlier songs as I have to admit, until shamefully recently, I was still making them on my phone with the built-in phone microphone. As a result, the quality is less than desirable on a lot of my earlier stuff.
Music, lyrics and performance by myself.
The song is written in Old Norse to commemorate the Norse hero Sigurd the Crusader (Sigurðr Jórsalafari, literally "Sigurd the Jerusalem-Farer"). The events relayed in the song are given in the Saga of Sigurd the Crusader, attributed to Snorri Sturluson.
Sigurd wended his way from Norway down to England, whence he moved on to Iberia, and fought “heathen” (in the saga this word refers to Muslims) pirates and soldiers that were occupying the peninsular and the Balearic Islands. From there they go through Sicily and onwards to Acre and Jerusalem, where King Baldwin I of Jerusalem bids Sigurd assist on a military campaign to Sidon to recover lands for Christendom.
I hope you enjoy the song!
It goes without saying that I'm not aiming to glorify violence against others, rather I wish to teach history through song.

Baldvini konungr ræðr Jórsalaríki.
Nú fǫrum vér þangat undir merki Sigurðs.
Þeir unnu sér mikinn sigr yfir serkjum,
en á oss heita þeir. Verjum konungdóminn!
Með sex tǫgum skipa ok fimm þúsund manna
Siglum vér um haustit til Englands
Hann var konungr, konungr Norðmanna!
Hann fór til Jórsala ok kom at liði Baldvina!
Hann sigldi suðr, suðr til heiðnu landa!
Með einni rǫddu heiðrum vér Sigurð Jórsalafara!
Þá er siglum vestr fyrir Spán ór Galizulandi
sjám víkinga nǫkkura fara at féfangi
Til orrostu fyrstrar leggjum vér við heiðna
ok af þeim vinnum vér átta galeiðr.
Þá fór Sigurðr til kastala Sintrés.
Vann hann kastalann ok kristnaði fólkit!
Hann var konungr, konungr Norðmanna!
Hann fór til Jórsala ok kom at liði Baldvina!
Hann sigldi suðr, suðr til heiðnu landa!
Með einni rǫddu heiðrum vér Sigurð Jórsalafara!

Siglum um Sikileyjar ok hann Roðgeir jarl.
Þaðan siglum vér inn til Akrsborgar.
Fagnaði honum vel Baldvini konungr
ok gaf Sigurði dóma ok spán af Krossi Helga.
Þá fóru þeir saman til Sýrlands ok bǫrðusk.

There is a good Chant on my Channel ive made a video but definitely think you should remaster it and show the world.
Fantastic!
Fun facts -
Sigurd was only 18 years old when he lead the crusade (1108-1111).
His great grandfather was Harald Hardråde, who died at Stamford bridge in 1066.
When he died in 1130, the Norwegian civil war broke out.
Wikipedia says he died in 1126
@@_grayven1202 He died 26 of March 1130:

This song is genuinely mind blowing for me. To hear Old Norse pronounced correctly and transformed into a new song with original lyrics. Since most bands who sing in Old Norse are generally Pagan and don't know the language and have to use the Eddas for lyrics, this automatically entirely separates you from them in the best way possible! Finding your channel is certainly one of the best things that's happened to me in these past five years. These songs have helped me develop my own accent and pronunciation with speaking Old Norse and taught me so much history of the Christian kings of Norway, which are effectively becoming my favorite kings in Norwegian history, alongside King Haraldr Yngling and Haraldr Harðráði. I still can't believe that the Norwegians became Crusaders! Quite literally Christian Vikings who achieved greater fame, sailed to further seas, and earned greater glory than their pagan forefathers. It's genuinely so incredible to me and you have my deepest thanks for teaching this history in the tongue of the Northmen with your own incredible music! Skál, bróðir!
God bless you, my friend, and thank you for the edifying comment! Ver þú heill ok sæll :)
@@SkaldBard Þú líka, vinr mín! Þakka þér fyrir allt þitt starf! My Old Norse is out of tune so I might have misspelled a word or two 😂

Ah yes, just casually give your fleet to the emperor in exchange for a bunch of horses because of sheer will to travel by land and visit more realms. Sigurd was probably the most passionate "tourist" of his time. I bet he became a crusader just to see the Mediterranean, with killing Sarracines as just a cherry on top.
Anyway, thank you far your work, Skald. It is probably a ton of work to create any of your beautiful songs.
The worst thing about this song is that it ends
Hello from Japan! What wonderful music! Rhythmic, rich, and the beauty of the language is woven in a fascinating way. I love this song! It's just the best! Oh, I love music that transports my heart from my country to a foreign land... like yours!
P.S.: I used Google Translate for this comment (also for this sentence). I apologize if I used the wrong expression.
Thank you, nice to hear from someone so far away! Greetings from Europe
bro this is amazing i love these for my history classes and the kids love them even more, greetings from Chile
Yes, quality improved no end.
I gotta say this is amazing. I know of very few people who know multiple languages like you and can speak them fluently. I'm English as well as having Scottish, Irish, Welsh and Norwegien blood. Your songs have encouraged me to learn more about Scandanavia and Scottish history so thank you and keep making these great videos!
Thanks for the support, my friend - we have a very similar genetic background! Glad you like them
This song was great, now it's even better. How beautifully you compose music and create an external presentation

Another great music piece, look forward to the next, Sigurðr was the first king to go on a crusade. Which ecouraged others like Fredrick Barabarossa of the Holy Roman Empire, Phillip "Augustus" of France and Richard "the Lionheart" of England.
The original song was among my favourites, this one is even better, thank You😊
Amazing! Can't wait to listen to more remakes.
Ah I love this! Sigurd the Crusader was always one of my favorites of your songs! So, seeing it back new and amazing again is great!
The song that got me to subscribe to you, now improved in every way and polished from a gem into a proper work of art, ¡kudos to you for this work!
Thanks mate, I still remember your first comment on that video!
My favorite so far!!❤❤❤
I was waiting for the high note at the end. That’s the crowd pleaser. But overall, it is very well done and gives the impression of approaching doom.
Amazing work! Your talent is magnificent.
Thank you for the kind words!
I have been waiting for this remake for a long time. I'm excited.

This was the first song I heard from you, and absolutely fell in love with the channel. Fantastic revamp of the classic song! Well done!
Awesome man, thanks a lot
As an icelander that's heard many, Old norse songs (icelandic being very similar to old norse) Hearing you sing this and pronounce it so well, and the lyrics actually flow, and aren't just a jumbled mess of wrods brings a tear to my eye. Skál félagi!
Skál, þakka þér fyrir! Æðislegt að heyra þetta :-)
Man, your job is incredible. Dont let anyone fool you, your talent is above any equipment, this is the most important thing, and your dedication of course.
Waiting for the remake of Harald Haldradr with this quality of sound. May our Lord bless you and make your songs inspiration for our generation notice what kind of incredible things our ancestors did for their faith and maybe, revive the flame that make us fight for our God.
Thanks ever so much, my friend. I'm thinking of doing Harald Hardrada next. God bless and keep you!

Latin christian : Done
Greek : How ?
Latin : Northmen
Greek : oooooh....well...I have pain for those muslims now...
Latin : Me too, but I'm happy that we are not the ones who gets plundered and attacked by the northmen anymore. Glad they are on our side.
Sigurd and some Varangian guards. : Hey guys what are talking about ?
Latin and Greek : nothing
I have the impression that Nordic Christians were among the few who cared about baptizing non-Christians during the times of the Crusades. Or, at least, they were the ones who made the most effort. Both Norwegians (Sigurd or Saint Rognvald) and Danes (in the crusade against the Wends, the Germans would conquer them but didn't care about baptizing and evangelizing, whereas the Danes did!) and Swedes, whenever they went on a crusade, never failed to try to baptize pagans or non-Christians.

In your clips, why are Muslims always described as heathen?
I suppose because medieval Christians used this term to refer to Muslims. Snorri also uses this term in the saga of Sigurd the Crusader.
Christians at time didnt think of islam as religion, they called everyone else as pagans
That was actually just the mediaeval Christian terminology, at least in Northern Europe - so it's not my "choice" so to speak
