Here's a remake of my song Sigurd the Crusader. I've decided to remake a lot of my earlier songs as I have to admit, until shamefully recently, I was still making them on my phone with the built-in phone microphone. As a result, the quality is less than desirable on a lot of my earlier stuff. Music, lyrics and performance by myself. The song is written in Old Norse to commemorate the Norse hero Sigurd the Crusader (Sigurðr Jórsalafari, literally "Sigurd the Jerusalem-Farer"). The events relayed in the song are given in the Saga of Sigurd the Crusader, attributed to Snorri Sturluson. Sigurd wended his way from Norway down to England, whence he moved on to Iberia, and fought “heathen” (in the saga this word refers to Muslims) pirates and soldiers that were occupying the peninsular and the Balearic Islands. From there they go through Sicily and onwards to Acre and Jerusalem, where King Baldwin I of Jerusalem bids Sigurd assist on a military campaign to Sidon to recover lands for Christendom. I hope you enjoy the song! It goes without saying that my intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence. Fantastic! Fun facts - Sigurd was only 18 years old when he lead the crusade (1108-1111). His great grandfather was Harald Hardråde, who died at Stamford bridge in 1066. When he died in 1130, the Norwegian civil war broke out.
As an icelander that's heard many, Old norse songs (icelandic being very similar to old norse) Hearing you sing this and pronounce it so well, and the lyrics actually flow, and aren't just a jumbled mess of wrods brings a tear to my eye. Skál félagi!
This song is genuinely mind blowing for me. To hear Old Norse pronounced correctly and transformed into a new song with original lyrics. Since most bands who sing in Old Norse are generally Pagan and don't know the language and have to use the Eddas for lyrics, this automatically entirely separates you from them in the best way possible! Finding your channel is certainly one of the best things that's happened to me in these past five years. These songs have helped me develop my own accent and pronunciation with speaking Old Norse and taught me so much history of the Christian kings of Norway, which are effectively becoming my favorite kings in Norwegian history, alongside King Haraldr Yngling and Haraldr Harðráði. I still can't believe that the Norwegians became Crusaders! Quite literally Christian Vikings who achieved greater fame, sailed to further seas, and earned greater glory than their pagan forefathers. It's genuinely so incredible to me and you have my deepest thanks for teaching this history in the tongue of the Northmen with your own incredible music! Skál, bróðir!
Not surprising considering most sagas that have survived through the centuries were written by Christians and who therefore had no interest in praising and memorialise those Vikings who still followed Germanic/Norse polytheism. Another fact is that the Vikings didn't write down their sagas (for they did not have a complete writing system of their own like the Christian had), instead, the sagas were pasted down from one generation to the next, via oral tradition. Which could lead to one saga being lost to history. It is also not surprising since when the sagas were written down, centuries have already pasted since the Viking age, so many sagas may have been forgotten by then. Plus, Snorri most likely didn't write down everything about the old Germanic/Norse polytheism. Adding to this is the fact that most renowned figures of the Vikings age lived closest to the centuries. When the sagas were written down, and so those who followed Norse/Germanic polytheism that were renowned may already have been forgotten by then. My favourite Christian Vikings are as follows: 1. Hákon "goði" Haraldrson. 2. Haraldr "hárðráði" Sigurðarson. 3. Óláfr "skautkonungr" Eiríkrson. 4. Knútr Sveinnson. 5. Gunnarr "á Hliðarendi" Hámundarson.
