Pls tell them to put the GR86 drivetrain in the GR Corolla as a "Joke" for SEMA 😂😂😂
Modern RWD drift corolla with the Initial D AE86 livery would be kinda cool tbh
That would actually be awesome 😂
Sure, everything except the flat four.
@@PiDsPagePrototypeswould be cool with the flat four if it weren’t for the problems we’ve been seeing with it on the track
@@PiDsPagePrototypesbut that's a "Joke"
Next on Toyota's Radar, An all new GR Celica with a new 2.0 Turbo. This is just a preview
And it will still suck, Team Toyota is garbage right now
I’ve heard abt their new 2.0 Turbo engine. Seems promising. I hope there’s a GE N/A version that 8k capable for the next 86. I don’t think the car needs a turbo
@@VividTape Not really.
@@VividTape no they don't. the GR products have been all pretty good.
@@VividTape Toyota has always been better & Far Superior than Anything American Made.
Nissan did the same thing with the now current Z. Swapping a TT VQ into the 370Z back in the day. I’m assuming Toyota initiated this project to gauge public interest on a production version.
They have my vote
How about a Celica gt4 bonnet vent on it, allowing to bulge the bonnet and give more clearance. Would be a nice nod to the old school look.
100% The hood, wide body and large rear spoiler were so signature to all the GT-Four/All-Tracs
@MaxedMirage - yes would also agree , I feel they have missed the opportunity on that aspect.
Toyota using evasive as free R&D for the next gen gr86
Kind of a thing in the industry. There was a 370Z at SEMA that was the 3.0 TT setup before we saw the new Z. I'm sure if you look you'll find lots of other examples.
Evasive can just sell a convo kit and make huge profits from all sensible 86 owners.
Fitting, given all the evasive answers TTE gave to the FIA in 1996 regarding the former work on turbo restrictors for the St 205 WRC
Hope you are right!
Next gen86... wishful thinking, but highly doubtful
Boot up the Saturn and pop in Sega Rally Championship.
my man
GAME OVER YEEEEEEEEAAAHH
Heck yes
This comment makes me feel so old 😂
@@d34thby1337 hahahaha best comment ever
I have an FR-S and my co-worker just got the Corolla. We were literally talking about this like 2 days ago lol. She's gonna freak out when she sees this.
Cool 👍
I always wanted them to make the Scion TC (clearly the Celica successor of its time) into a GT4. This is like a wish come true
The only thing in common with the celica it had was that its manual and fwd. i dont think thats enough to call it a successor
It filled the same spot in the lineup as the last Celica did, being an affordable sporty-ish FWD coupe with economy car underpinnings. It was more of a spiritual successor.
the Scion TC was the successor to the last Celica, you can even see it in the styling of the TC
@@mcld4214yknow TC almost stands for something
I think the word he was looking for is “Transversely” mounted.
It slipped my mind 😅
@@LarryChenPhoto most rally cars today have their engines mounted tranversely which makes sence. this car was competing against some stupid fast hatchbacks. and most rally cars now (if not all worlwide) are hatchbacks anyways
This is a step backward. Please install north south not transverse. In rally now days is transverse because of the cheap cars they are based on not because teams would not rather do north south installations.
@@Taktko why? It works as it is, and the technology is already there. The only thing they'd accomplish is increase the development time
@@TaktkoThere's nothing about a longitudinal awd drivetrain that's better than transverse. Most awd drivatrains are assymetric anyway (unless you go the Audi/Subaru route, which gives unnecessary understeer and makes the chassi longer in the front)
The only real advantage of longitudinal is the aesthetics, it "looks" better.
Awesome project! I wish they would offer the GR86 with the GR Corolla engine as a production model. I love my GR86 but that turbo 3 cylinder is insane.
I hope they put the GR Corolla's Triple Exhaust on it as well! it's gonna freak people out!
This is a fun little project, I can't wait to see it rip when it's finished 😎 the fact that Toyota sanctioned this is a good sign of things to come. 💯
Finally, a motor that fits this chassis. They should've dropped the boxer engine for the 2017 revision.
Thanks for getting into weeds for us Larry, Nerd Alliance member here loving the details!
This is awesome that Toyota is thinking of reviving the Celica and keeping the all-wheel drive.
That would be amazing
The GR86 becomes a Corolla again.
Or a Celica GT4
Mindblowing but what a great engineswap !
Nearly all Generations of Celicas shared a lot with Corollas in general. To me makes sense if they made the Celica based off of a Corolla Coupe chassis, but restyled to look like a Celica.
I came across a 1993 Toyota Celica GT4 that was being sold for $25K here in PA., and my mouth hit the floor. 😮😮
The shop owner said it was used as a daily and a race car for Pocono Raceway. 😊
This guy is an absolute encyclopaedia of automotive information!! Incredible!!
Great project. This Toyota engine is possibly the finest in the World at the moment.
Thank you for spending the time on this.
Toyota please make the 3 cylinder turbo motor standard in the next gr86 !
That would be interesting
The GR86 should stay NA imho. Everything is turbo these days and its anoying.
@@xXYannuschXxi agree, its part of its charm
"Mounted like this... like thiiiisss (hand gestures)" That guy really knows his stuff.
he don't word good, but he build car good 👍
Yeah, it was a bit hard to watch. I know my speaking skills aren't great either, but still, lol.
gosh, this would legit be my dream car. what an awesome project. the GT-4 is one of the coolest cars of all time.
that engine rwd in the 86 would be sweet
Damn Larry that is a sick build. I’m glad you got this story too.
I hope Toyota follows thru with this - you'd get my money!
Love your shows man, is nice and detailed of the topic. Is not like a 3 mins overview! ❤❤ Keep up the great work!
Agreed
Watching with interest. (People have already done AWD BRZ's so cool to see what route Toyota go.... Right....off to watch video)
st185 owner of #69 AU delivered here for the GT4 content
Love to see what they'll do to get the handling right with a FWD engine and trans in a pure RWD chassis
Ironically, it’s an AWD chassis, turned into a RWD chassis, being turned back into an AWD chassis.
@@DBtwoz when was the gr86 chassis awd?
@@g0dd4m_w1z4rd_m4n The front is based on Subaru GD chassis and the rear is a Subaru GR chassis.
@@DBtwoz it can be based on whatever, the chassis itself isn't awd
@@g0dd4m_w1z4rd_m4n OK, lol
I saw this at MATG and had no clue what this was. Glad to come across this video!
Toyota Japan, through Rookie Racing (Akio Toyoda's own racing team), actually built a GR86 with the G16E as its engine but they put the engine longitudinally to make it RWD only and use it to race in Super Taikyu.
That is still awesome
@@CompressorSurge Here's another fun fact. Before they put the regular G16E this year, Rookie Racing used a destroked G16E (1.3L) to achieve higher RPM.
Considering there's been rumours around the next-gen 86 coming and the S-FR (Miata competitor) approved to be built after being in a concept car limbo for a while, this recent engine development is very interesting.
This car will be amazing ❤
Larry is perfect for these kind of interviews... he knows enough about cars to not ask dumbass questions... but he is naive enough to get interesting info out of the builders... nice job
I appreciate this comment so much 😂
There's no naivety, just curiosity. Chen really knows his stuff. One of the best out there for allowing people to showcase their builds.
Love this project. So much goodness.
A gr86 altrac would be cool
My dad had a celica altrac turbo which for the st165 generation, the US market altrac turbo and the japanese gtfour were the same exact car. I think each dealer got like only 1 or 2 cars. Anyways.
The alltrac was so cool
Very exciting. I love to hear the creative design work these guys are doing to build what is going to be a highly customized drivetrain.
This is ultra cool and I love the philosophy of the project, keeping the Corolla drivetrain and 86 body very faithful to the originals. I'm hoping they add some cool oem feeling exterior parts like the high wing that aren't just off the shelf wings and splitters. The high wings on the 90s GT4s, Supras, etc., are so iconic, and it'd be cool to have some high spec factory parts like that floating around. Excited to see how this turns out and I love the idea of a potential production model. Toyota seems to really be killing it these days
Hopefully it pulls through and we this engine in the GR 86!
This is it. This would be THE car I would trade both MR2's and my Celica for. Build it Toyota!
SW20? I wouldn’t sell my STi for this but I could use another daily 😅
Money builds happiness 😊
I've always wanted someone to do a 2ZZGE engine swap with the 86/BRZ! Especially if it's the Lotus supercharged varient.
That would be so good!!
New favorite build! I always thought Subaru wouldve done this with the STI drivetrain but this is WAY better!
Subaru been trippin’ lately 😢
Same but I thought it would be the WRX drive train
Flippin’
I would literally buy this in a heartbeat if they actually make one irl
I truly hope when Honda makes the next type r i hope it's awd. Preferably no hybrid but it looks like it will be hybrid. But i would still take an awd type r with rear driven by pure motors. & front is same ice.
Goshhhhhh i cant stand how many sickkkk asssss cars have become so ffffffun to watch and envy
It’s nice to still come across unique builds
Larry, you need to follow this build, and make up dates vídeos, that would be cool.
Yes please
Looks like another awesome Evasive build!
This is going to be such an exciting project.
First awd gt86 was build 2013-2014 in Finland @ tommi mäkinen racing.
This is an awesome build. I love custom fab work, and this fits the bill. And as a ZD8 BRZ owner, this is even more interesting.
ZD8 gang 🫡
Holy smokes this is going to be awesome. I'm going to be following this project
For a second I thought this was the Assetto Corsa mod that has been our for a awhile. Cool to see that concept come to life.
Now turn the gr corolla into a boxxer RWD, best of both worlds
Isn't That Dai's Fabricator, That Build The BRZ, And He Is Also On His FD Team?
Glad to see this being done!!! The 86 deserves a Toyota powerplant!
It's funny that Toyota is just thinking of this.
I did this to a 91 Prelude Si 4 wheelsteer and made it all wheel drive with Hondas stock Realtme AWD system from the 97-01 Honda CRV. And it's stock looking and no cutting of the chassis at all.
Any updates on this build? I’m curious
My two racing sense. The engine being so far forward, beyond front axles, this is going to be a off balance monster.
Toyota please make this a real production car!
Yes!
Looking forward to seeing this finished.
Have been playing with similar in video games lately and really like it, very cool!
I’m not a Toyota guy, but always liked the Celica, and this is such a MAD build !!!
I can’t wait to see the end product - especially in that click bait rally livery white/green/red graphic 😲
Best build idea since Project Binky!
Toyota should make GR86 alltrac official!
Toyota need to make this. They could brand it as the GR Celica 86 . Price point at $40k starting and top out at $50k?
Now that is a Toyota I'd buy today.
I wouldn’t sell my STi but I could use a second car 😂
This is a pretty dope project!
Larry was not buying the idea that the hood would close 😂 Larry probably thinking of the GT4586.
Been waiting for this since I seen the gr swapped ae86 in Japan 👌🏽
I wish it wasn't so exciting when someone puts a Toyota engine in a sports car with a Toyota badge on the hood. Great content Larry!
Currently been sourcing parts to rsx 5 lug and disc conversion with CRV AWD. Getting together piece by piece...
*_They better sell a base model version… 😭_*
That's the money making recipe. Three versions, base FWD model, upscaled FWD model and then the GR version AWD Turbo.
Hair of the Cheny Chen Chen!! ✌✌✌
It's on a Trueno edition 😢
Couldn't they do it on a regular base model?
Dude this is gonna be awesome 👌 👏
The fact that they are making this concept for SEMA is proof that an actual production version will arrive for the next generation. Especially when you consider what the rumors have also said about the next generation GR86 having a de-stroked version of the G16E-GTS.
I cant wait to see more of this
19:50 Not at all people have been doing it for ages. Shorten the length and then swap the outer cup for the one that fits the hub, the inner cup will be the one that fits the corolla, so you'll end up with one end being a BRZ/86 and the other end being the GR. People did this for H22 swaps in Civics and such WAAYYY back in the day haha.
Lots of Evasive action to get this car running
Need to see more so badly
This is dope, would love to see Toyota make something similar
Honestly the gr corolla with the boxer rwd would be a dope swap. Might as well do that also haha.
😂
Sign me up. Want to add the AWD GR86 next to my GRY Rallye 😊😊😊
It's a good day when the upload is a Toyota Episode! How awesome would it be if Toyota actually made these changes to production?
St liftback celicas/GT4 in general are mostly under the radar, cant find any aftermarkets so it makes sense that they would have to make or come up with alot.
This was literally my first build on horizon 5 with the gt86.
Sick beat!!
A mini ecu standalone behind the digital gauges a pico size ecu
this is going to be the coolest damn thing ever
Making the GR86 with GR Corolla engine is cool tho making such more reliable.
Love this livery
I really hope the upcoming Celica will be a turbo AWD monster 😁. And accessible too (price/availability)!
This is interesting, we will try to recreate the physics for this car!
Restrictor plate go brrrrrr
I love u Larry Chen!!!
Larry is the GOAT
Hey Larry, any update on this project? or is it just a 'see it at SEMA' kind of thing?
OUTSTANDING!!! In all honesty and my opinion, that would be my favorite car. I love the GR86 just NOT the Subaru engine. Does anyone remember Fensports AWD 03’ Celica? Extraordinary build!
Which engine did that have?
@@CompressorSurge 3S-GTE
Has anyone done a full awd WRX drivetrain swap into one of these before?
My thoughts exactly
Love Larry and I'm not sure if it's just me but some of the questions asked and real car enthusiast shouldn't have to ask
Honestly I can't imagine that a Gr86 with a GR corolla drivetrain is going to be all that heavy or front biased. Maybe, at the most, like 100 pounds heavier. Front Axles, turbocharger, intercooler and intake plumbing and what not, but one less cylinder, one less cylinder head, and a smaller gearbox. I think this might be a sick build
The ST205 celica was 60/40 f/r weight distribution so he cant really get it much worse haha!
@@SHIREDRIFT that car was a turd and it cheated getting banned by the FIA
The st165 was the original altrac and it was very light with a 50:50 distribution. My dad had a st165 altrac turbo. For the st165 the USDM and JDM cars were identical, the gtfour was just a rhd altrac turbo in the late 80s early 90s.
Anyways. Everybody loves the heaviest and most illegal wrc car toyota has ever made. The 185 and 205 weighed over 3500 pounds and had 60:40 distribution.
The 165 in rally form weighed 3000 pounds with 50:50 and it handled way better too. But it doesnt look cool so people think its a turd i guess
Definitely more than a hundred pounds.😂
@@samuelgarrod8327 idk man you might be surprised by how light the 3 cylinder in-line is compared to the boxer-4. The transmissions are probably around the same weight, if not the 3 cylinder awd trans being a little lighter, and they both of a drive shaft and differential so that won't make a difference in the comparison.
@@inaNis_ the differential isnt in the front of the car on a rwd car what are you talking about? "They both have a driveshaft and differential so that wont make a difference in the comparison"
What!?
The transmission, diff, and engine are now all in the engine bay.
A stock gr86 only has an engine in the engine bay. The transmission is in the trans tunnel underneath the cabin in the center of the car. They moved all of that weight and more by adding a front diff into the front of the car.
It's definitely going to have terrible weight distribution. So yeah it still has a drive shaft and rear diff, but THEY ALSO ADDED A FRONT DIFF WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT GUY???
