- After a year of development with our GR Yaris, we have put together this tuning guide for the G16E-GTS engine in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. We took ours from stock to over 500hp and 10--second passes, which gave us, and Powertune Australia, the knowledge you need to build your GR Yaris or Corolla up to the same point.

Pro tip from one of the guys racing a GR Yaris (Rotheli racing I believe), the rear section of the exhaust getting very hot can cause the 4WD overheating issue, with a couple of bucks on some decent quality exhaust tape you can wrap the section around where the 4WD clutchpack and rear diff are - when he did that he didn't have a single overheat issue afterwards. When I install my new exhaust I will definately wrap the back of the center pipe.
Will check this out
@Way Outthere Australian dealers rarely even know about the cars they are selling
@Way Outthere Do you have link for more info about that part? Thanks
Pro tip. You're not pushing enough hp to warrant that bozo 🤡🤡
Now that's a prob tip I heard about the overheating on track and if that's all it is well God damn
As a new GRY owner looking to modify I loved every minute of this video! So much information in 30 minutes and I now feel empowered into making mine just as good. Thanks for your time making this great video 🙌
Great you talked about the failures. This has been something that people don't want to talk about, making everyone think they're invincible. I'd be keen to know more about those cases of failure, eg. What power, torque, how bad the knock was etc.
Yeah, when you modify them. In stocks trim, they probably are bulletproof.
Toyota has engineered quite the engine from hell that can take a lot of abuse. Great work and really love the informative technical dive from the tuner as well as Andrew. You guys rock!
all with a fully open deck too...
@@gwot has anyone taken the block to 750whp yet? if the GR was sleeved would it handle 1000whp like the Mitsubishi Evo 10 4cyl did?
Yamaha?
@@hamishahern2055that's a hail mary I believe. I worry about the stock components on the engine and transmission.
3 cylinder engine holding 500hp with little mods is simply amazing. I was suspicious when i heard the rumor gr86 will have this engine. However, right now, i am excited to see this engine on gr86.
Fyi motec isn't a little upgrade..
Probably costs 5 grand
@@garrettchapman8170 I was about to say that seems like a lot of expensive stuff to be classified as "little" mods, I mean you pointed out the expensive ecu (6.5k), but you also need cams (1k), and turbo upgrades (7k), and a custom fueling system (~3k), full exhaust (3.5K), intercooler (750-1k), valve springs (500), clutch (2-3k). So erroring on the cheaper side you still end up at 23.5k in mods; really doesn't seem so little anymore.
I guess you dont look at offroading very often considering people have been tuning 3cyls to well over this.
@@tristenmarshall2954not to mention any labor lol. Almost any engine will hold if you open it up and reinforce it lol
Excellent in-depth wrap up and guide essentially. Awesome little engine!
Loved this whole series, just finished binge watching the whole thing in 2 days. Amazing progress & awesome to see each stage in your development. Beauty of a lil car
Great video. Just love how you guys explain everything in detail. This is the type of videos I love to watch. Learning new stuff!!!
thank you guys for putting such effort and in depth explanations into everything about your build, and involvement with others on the same path.
Absolutely fantastic wrap up.....Loved the whole journey, thanks to everyone involved👆👍
Really good work Andrew and the others that worked to achieve this. Very happy to see a modern enthusiast car with as good a potential as the GR has. Thanks toyota!
Loves these videos, I first saw your content when you helped MCM with Tay Tay, GR Yaris is a crazy car and can't wait to hopefully get one, one day
Been following this guide, my Kelford Camshaft and Valve Springs arrive tomorrow 😊
I just be happy with 320hp, what an amazing car.
What modifications you have on your car?
I'm shooting for 350hp. I'd be happy with that. Don't need anything more. Hoping people here in the USA or other countries will get to unlocking the stock ECU. Not dropping 6K for an extra 50hp.
New GR owner and this was very informative. Thanks, fellas!!
Excellent vid, professional as. Im amazed at the info you shared. Great to see.
Nice that you guys included the Corolla GR. Incredible video thank you guys
Its the same drive train...
Looking forward to seeing Nissan Z's running around soon with various set ups.
I haven't had a jdm tuner car since 2011 but even the new Nissan Z gets me excited.
These things are wild, can't wait for the GR Corolla!
Excellent video! Informative, pragmatic and with integrity. Rare in this line of business. Thank you!
Really great series and closing video. Nice work
Thanks for the video and explanation, much of this applies to all modern, direct injected turbocharged vehicles.
Very comprehensive video of the GRY mods 👍👍👍👍
Wow, i love the depth of detail
Thanks for all the videos and information, it's been extremely thorough. it would be interesting to know how much all that cost. i realise you were given many parts to test. i'm going to buy a Yaris Rallye and checked out the Motec cost- $6k plus fitting and tuning. Probably cant get that one past the wife!
Great summary of your development journey! I did have a couple of questions though. When does the stock turbo max out? What duration Kelford cam did you use and what benefits would there be to using more duration?
Pretty good, when you put it in context.
Double the cubes, double the cyls, and you get a 3.2L, 6 cylinder, that will produce north of 1000hp with equivalent mods. Correct me if I'm wrong on those specs. Either way, pretty good.
In theory yes, but that's not the main goal because they can fit this little engine in every car, also it comply with regulations, for the relatively small car 300hp is more than enough for most people and also cheaper to produce than the bigger engine. 1000 hp will require more hardcore components which will make the car more expensive and also will turn this vehicle into a very dangerous machine to drive. From a mechanical and technical point of view - the engineers could probably make even this engine double or triple the hp, but it will be 10-20 times more expensive to make it reliable and safe to drive. But yeah, I agree with you, the architecture of the engine seems to be powerful and well engineered.
What an awesome video! Great job guys
The carbon is sweet I just ordered mine thx for this vid
Stunning video, thank you. Makes me want one ASAP
I've tried to tell people that "cracked" ecu does not mean they have full control over it. It's basicly a hack job at this point, same as "tuning box".
Great little cars. They cost around €70’000 here in Ireland from a dealership brand new 😭
To think the first 1000 (like Motive got) were $39,950 AUD or 27,000 Euro!
Its extra for the competition pack too dont forget
Saw a low mileage base model for sale at €58’000 recently 🙈. Ireland is a rip off for performance cars
The insconsistancy on dyno with stock ecu its because the rear diff is lightly faster than front , the awd dyno gets crazy .. i take off the cardan shaft from mine and all the runs was consistent ( only fwd )
th-cam.com/video/w3r91XFiUn4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Vg6sY1imYxReHUZj
It's just cruel to drop this at 3AM UK time. Can't wait to watch this in the morning.
I'm impressed by the stock ECU logic and how complicated it is and how hard it tries to preserve the health of the engine. Is there anybody in the German industry that has the same approach?
Oh yeah, this isnt some japan only ideology.
The germans have done this for atleast a decade now.
Cannot wait to watch this later. I want to see what the bolt on limit is !!
That sounds so good. Wonder if the corolla, because it's heavier, would have the same AWD issue during tunning or gear box faillure with high power output.
Respect🙏🙏 Very professional explanations.👏🏻👏🏻
really useful info , thank you vey much!
Great video! Love this stuff!
Block insert = no water around the combustion area of the open deck, which is why they were created and is the major advantage of them... Yaris going to have open deck honda issues at big HP... Grout or epoxy on a late model engine seems naughty :P Darton on the case already I bet...
Woud love an update on the GR Yaris!
put that car on a UK dyno - bound to make 600+ hp 🤔
well done guys great results and great content
😂 you’re not wrong 🙌
I'm glad we are getting the Corolla GR instead in the US.. I want it bad.. I want to get the Base model and order it with the LS on the front and back.. And from there pay it off and by then there will be a ton of aftermarket parts and Tunes to make a safe 400 HP.. that would be more than fast enough for me..
I'd be waiting for a lot more development for reflashing the stock ECU's to be done first before I'd consider reflashing the stock ECU unless you don't mind being a guinea pig. For stage one I'd look at a tuning box like a DTUK stage 2, that is proven to work rather than an exhaust.
The video I was waiting for :D
Smart to get on this before the GR Corolla comes out. The enthusiast comunity will have a lot of questions
Lots of dumb questions too and won't reference anything but keep asking the same question over and over again.
@@dj4monie people get into things at different times. It's best not to discourage people from asking questions and simply point them to information resources like forums related to their car.
@@RandomlnternetGuy I'm not sure about that people are still doing the intake, exhaust, intercooler, tune thing without understanding anything.
I don't discourage, I give them links I expect them to read or watch a video. If it takes Gale Banks two hours to get his point across then you better sit your ass down and watch it, he won't be with us much longer and we'll be worse off for it.
These DI Turbocharged cars are pretty much dummy proof.
Also no mention of spark plugs here but that is often debated as if this is the 1990's all over again.
People should do their research before buying anything especially cars, all of them are reliable some more than others but the spread between makes is less than 5% and don't get me started on overpaying for cars.
yesss thankyouumotive
Hey guys great video! I'm modding up a GR Corolla and will be doing intake, manifold, downpipe, catback exhaust & HKS BOV as well as tune with the valvesprings and camshaft. Would I be okay with a 267-A model cam or would I need the 267-EZP? Cheers in advance!
Brilliant informative video
Crazy, the motec ecu is almost 6k!!
The intro just blew out my speakers
This car, the new Civic Type R below it, the RS3 above it....We live in a very lucky time, everybody!
Great Video! Awesome info
Love this vid ..thank you
Me taking notes even though I cannot afford a GR Yaris or any of these mods : ✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻
isn't the JB4 available on this platform? IDK how it does here, but they they make some solid power on other cars like the Q50, Stinger GT, etc. Like upwards of 100whp with bolt ons.
I would love to see this kind of video on the RB series of engines with a stock bottom end
We are working on a 20 part RB Tuning Tips series
@@MotiveVideo awesome, can’t wait to see it. I have an ECR33 sedan and I’m excited to get that to a streetable 270rwkw. Your guys’ videos are a huge inspiration and production quality is top notch. Really hope this channel blows up more. Y’all deserve it, cheers
rb tuning tips? dang im in the middle of a rb25 build. since 7 years lol
Loving mine
love the video great info !!! do you guys do mods for the general public?
We don’t, no. It’s all our own cars on the channel mate.
@@MotiveVideo ohhhh thats a shame you guys actually know your stuff bit hard to find a trustworthy place that does, especially in Melbourne
9:55 this is great!!!! 😂 the end! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What do you recommend for the differential fluids ? As far as brands and such, I’d like to know what fluids you have used to handle this beast!
Jesus Toyota made the 3cyl engine small with many aftermarket support and potential for its size and cylinder count. Once the GR Corolla hits the NA market I can't wait to see people go too far with it. 😁 Also thank you experts for this brilliant explanation!
Thanks!
Guys … u r amazing ❤️🔥
Awesome video. Name of the intro music, if possible, please?
Motec is amazing but 7 grand for a 50hp gain is quite steep. Definitely a good investment if going Bigger Turbo
The cylinders are not cylindrical bc of the valves. They are cut to let the valves thru. So they tend to always bust right there.
Excellent informative overview. 👍
For the Euro car guys - translation:
Stage 1 = ~40hp for $10,000 🤪
Stage 2= ~80hp for $18.000
Stage 2+ = ~100hp for $22,000
Stage 3 = lots for lots
Why would it cost that much?
@@dj4monie Motec and custom tuning ain't cheap. Kelford cams and springs are $2k without labour and custom tuning. Overall one of the more expensive cars to mod (mainly because it’s so new and OTS tuning is in its infancy.
Literally spot on
I wonder how much that number will go down in the next….5 years?
@@or-ian6973 should get cheaper as the global market expands and more people start nodding them seriously once they’re out of warranty
Awesome info. 👌👍🥃
Man this list of what you can do / how much gains / what to use is completely different if you compare it to for example what MPS Engineering in Germany offers / suggests to do with the yaris
Ours is proven on the dyno, circuit and dragatrip. Backs up every claim. Bot saying only way to do it, but saying it works. Not just on our car, buy quite a few.
@@MotiveVideo All good, I do believe what you guys state. It's just kind of confusing how there can be so different takes / outputs made by different shops /tuners
Ekanoo run an upgraded intake, they have the fastest GR on the planet - the GR gains with an intake whatever stage you take it to
3rd quickest GR Yaris. And they have samw turbo kit and intake as us.
Great series, what 0-100kmhr would it be achieving through the stages?
Depends on your tyre type and diamater and driving ability.
I’m young and been liking fo a car I could build looking at this it could be less then 30k to make a serious build
Dope good things to know about my new car when i win it 🤞 haha
I love this video! I do not have the funds to do all the big upgrades.. All I have is an intake, down pipe exhaust and a ecu flash.. It’s producing 251kw and 434nm.. Do you think I have anything to be worried about? I do drags every now and again and play with it in the streets but nothing to serious.. Would love to hear your feedback..
What ET and mph? What dyno?
Which tuning company did your remap?
@@MotiveVideo I have not done a drag yet since the tune. I will be going next weekend again. The type of dyno was a chasis dyno..
@@VADER_225 The company who did the tune is MAD Tuning in Namibia, where I am located..
Un miata 2023 sería un gran proyecto.....
I'm waiting for some crazy guy to fuse two G16E together and make us a "3JZ" that Toyota won't give us!
Supra engine already exists.
Alloy block, direct injection and can make over 800whp unopened, like two G16s
how difficult is the change to E85 injectors? I live in a place where E85 is often cheaper than regular octane, if trhis is a relatively simple mod this may be the first thing I did.
Awesome 😎
how much should I spend if I want around 400-450hp? Thanks
I like how the I3 sounds like a mini I6
I'm going to G16E-GTS swap a GR86 next year
Stock Internals? And if so are they forged?
Is there a way to fix the understear, is that fixed with the rear diff swap?
Why about cost of stage 2 and 3? Tnx
Wise words
What intake did you install? That thing sounds insane
I want the motec exhaust system from Dominic torreto.
Can we get an update on this video with new modifications…this was a year ago I would love alternate options..
what about rear dif cooling?
only thing that makes me sad so many people never looked at a corolla until now .. now these things will be marked up
3 banger banging
Do these guys do any work on the Hyundai N cars?
Would be nice to know the cost of valve springs and cams as you’re going to need them quite soon in the modification process.
Not hard to search for them on Goleby’s Parts website
Well labour is the biggest cost as you’re opening up the engine… 🤷🏻♂️
@@behindthebuild8016 which all depends on your area
this might be a stupid question but... would the motec ecu still work on the gr corolla?
does anyone have the link to the software used to tune this GR yaris stock ecu?
You put links to websites for the products in the video and non of the sites have any of the parts you mentioned ;-)
Has anyone fitted a borg warner turbo yet?
How many wheel Horsepower was this Yaris at when it made it into the 10s?
what intake is that 🥲 please tell me its also available for the GRC
