  • Photo Shoot Challenge | Shoot A Concert With A 14 Year Old Nikon D70
I wanted to challenge myself to go out and shoot with a super old Nikon DSLR, the D70. 14 years ago this camera was one of the first consumer facing Nikon DSLR's meant for the general public. It wasn't super expensive but it wasn't cheap at around $1200 and more if you added the kit lens.
This concert was more so at a bar then a full on venue which meant really bad lighting. The camera tops out at 1600 ISO which means, faster glass was needed. I used the Nikon 35 F1.8 DX and 50 1.4 AF-D.
Did I do a great job, not exactly in my book. Did I get mostly proper exposures and some keeper images, I think so.

Thanks, Jared for again showing what an older DSLR with good glass and proper handling can do. The D70 is to DSLRs what the Ford Model A was to cars - an early issue of a new technology that got just about everything right. RAW, full manual contols, on board focus motor! Much more solid and complete than the later D3000 and D5000 series cameras. I still use mine from time to time, especially with older MF lenses, like my Vivitar 28-85 / 2.8-3.8. That is an all metal, Sherman tank of a lens with great color rendition, which I picked up in a pawn shop for just a few bucks some years ago. Shooting in RAW with that combination still gives me some great images.

Its January of 2019, and I still have my D70 - bought it in early 2006 or late 2005...I think. It's been through with me from Rocky Mountains of BC & Alberta, to Northern Canada, then to Borneo Islands of Malaysia, trekking down Orangutan sanctuary in Sabah, Great Walls of China, Russian Frontier regions, and to Jungles and deserts of Africa...It still works great...I've documented thousands of lives with that camera. It barely has 13k actuation because I was also using other cameras too - they are all gone and only D70 remains to this date - a testament to the build quality of Nikon (while it was still made in Japan).

Thanks for this, I still use a D90 and am left wanting often for more focus points and higher ISO capability... but I'm flat broke, so seeing you break out old gear like this (and your 1Dx 5 minute) is really encouraging for photographers like myself.

I borrowed a Nikon D70 to try out wildlife photography. Was a good experience, but photographing roe deer right before sunrise was the worst thing and the noise was horrible. Upgraded to a Nikon D5500 during christmas and believe me. The difference is unbelievable

I really like this! These pictures really told a great story. I felt like I was there watching the band. You are plenty skilled enough to shoot great pictures that tell this story, even with an old film camera, and that is the point man. It is about the photographer using what tools are in hand to tell the story. Nice work Jared, very nice.

Hi Jared, that was a great demo. I have that Nikon D70 and I'm passing it on to my 13 year old grandson , who is actually pretty good for his age. I'm a retired professional Photographer (Did I say retired ? I'm an 80 yr old that it's hard to get rid of the Photography Bug) once you are in it , there's no cure. That D70 is a work horse, if it is not abused, like dropping it on a hard surface. Megapixels is the drawback. I'm an Nikon user since 1970 , My first Nikon was the Nikon F, film camera. Next photo shoot challenge for you. Winter snow storm and lit up outdoors Christmas lighting of homes. Christmas as almost on us. Good hunting , good shooting. Ciao. From Canada

Dude, i did it so many times... the Nikon D70s was my first digital camera and I took something about 250.000 shoots with it. Almost 200 jobs, in 4 years. It already comes with creative light sistem, so you could fire a nikon sb800 and sb600 remotely, one of my major reasons to be a nikon lover until now. Thanks for the good memories. I know how I would approach a situation like this as I did it often enough before, but what was your approach? And what would you recommend a beginner who might have a basic understanding of the exposure triangle, but who isn't used to this particular scenario?
Anyway, personally I would recommend for a beginner to shoot at F1.4, keep the ISO at 1600 and to rather focus on the shutter speed in manual, or to use aperture priority instead. Also, I would recommend to go for slow and/or particularly well lit situations. Also, maybe back button focus?

Before I upgraded to the 7D I shot with the 10D from 2003 (the Camera is as old as I am) that has 6.2 MP and got fantastic results with it and I also can print pretty large without becoming unsharp!

I'm hoping to get my D70 back from a friend this Friday. Gave it to him a few years ago, but he's upgraded since. It's going unused and I miss the thing. The D70 was my first dSLR, followed by the D200, the D300 (both of which I still have), the D800, D810 and now D850. I recently pulled out a Canon PowerShot A620 (7.1 MP) and remember how great it's photos looked. Some ersatz firmware upgrade let me shoot RAW with it. Now planning a walk-around with both the D70 and the A620. Thanks, Jared, for the memories.

My first DSLR was the D80. I have since gone on to purchase a D700, D600, and D7100. I still use each one. The pictures that I took 12 years ago with the D80 are still just as good as they were then. I like the differences in the cameras and have no plans to get rid of any when I buy more. I still plan on picking up a D300s since they are so cheap now. I like using the older cameras and think videos like this keep it interesting.

Great work Jared. Most content out there focus on the greatest and latest lenses and body's - which is all right of cause, but it needs som counter weight to avoid GAS. One of my favorite lenses is the mighty old Nikon AF-D 80-200 ED (The non push pull) - and it is just an old bastard that's doing great. I miss some more of this cheap equipment video's - specially older lenses as Nikon bodies is compatible with all most every lens in the lineup. I had a D50 way back - and did take some great action shots from a local zoo with polar bears playing in the water - so it can definitely be done. Challenge: Night photography (Long exposures)

The D70 was my first digital camera back in 2004. It was pretty cool for me, but I didn’t know any better. I will say that I did get some D70 images published in a popular magazine. I ended up selling my D70 about 12 years ago to my cousin and have been kicking myself since. Bought another one about a month ago with only about 600 shutter actuations. Had a ton of fun with it but was really annoyed with its bulk on the back side and it’s CRAPPY LCD screen. Did some research and decided to buy a D40. I’m having even more fun with that little camera for the following reasons:
    1. It’s tinier and lighter
    2. GREAT LCD
    3. Better UI than D70
    4. 1 more stop of ISO (3200)
    5. RAW+JPEG
    6. In-camera B&W
    7. Better grip size for kids
    8. Cheap XD cards
    9. Real rubbery grips
    I think that’s about it.

I used the D70s shot snow yesterday. IT's my first Nikon about 11 years ago. I just use it to learn photography at first.

I like taking my D40 out for a run once in a while, using mostly the kit lenses that came with it. Having only 3 focus points really makes it a challenge. I have printed shots taken with the D40 and they turned out surprisingly well. Feeling inspired to take it out for another round very soon.

Jared, you were lucky to have a Nikon camera. A canon from that time is much more color-noise prone than tone-noise.
I'd like to see a video like this with a slightly newer camera. Like a 50/60D, D7000 or Canon T2i . I still have my 60D from 2012 and it's still going strong, 70k shots though.

I used to shoot in clubs with my Canon Rebel XT and plastic kit lens all the time. 8MP - I still have a lot of shots I'm proud of. I wouldn't ever want to have to go back - expensive gear is great - but as you/they say - good photos can be made with almost anything. As photographers we all experience the people who come up to us and say "your camera takes great photos" - so annoying - my camera doesn't do a freaking thing until I pick it up....
