@@fivterq3687 As good as AB used to be I don't think he was/is a better football player than Julio or Fitzgerald. Put either one of those two in the same situation and they probably put up very similar numbers while not being a complete and total cancer in the locker room. To me Antonio was more of a stat producer and that his dominance is slightly overstated because of that. Very selfish player.
what no one else talks about is that Bell almost single-handedly killed the runningback market in one fell swoop. the standoff between Bell and the Steelers looking back was really more representative of the running back market in general by basically saying "you're only as good as we make you" and unfortunately for other runningbacks, the Steelers were proven right. even if his holdout wasnt the exact moment that runningbacks started being devalued, it was certainly an integral part of it.
You know, you're absolutely right. I had never thought about it like that, his case study really proved to the league that every single running back, yes even whichever super talented one you're thinking of, is replaceable and should never be given a big contract. Take the savings, use it to upgrade your offensive line, get some pancake flatteners ya know, and just plug in some hungry chip on his shoulder 2nd or 3rd rounder. Shoot even for the steelers I remember the dude they had right after bell, Connor I think, had very similar production for a fraction of the cost. If I was a gm of an NFL team, I would literally only have running backs on their rookie deals. 4 year shelf life, after that I'll just reup with a fresh 21 year old from college. Kinda brutal, I know, but this is a business and it's a teams job to get the most production they can out of their available cap space.

Well it was also Gurley cause he had gotten a big contract only for him to start missing games cause of his knee.. Bell wanted RBs to make more but the way Gurley played proved teams were right not paying a RB
@@scotbush4338 i always had the idea that running backs should be the one position that doesn't effect the salary cap. they get hit like crazy and deserve big money but teams are scared to pay them cuz more often than not they get injured and it sucks seeing good running backs get paid little for the amount that they do.
The deal the Steelers offered him was better than the Jets deal as well.

LB didn’t realize that the O line he had was structured for his running style, you could see James Connor play the same as hell did when he got touches. His downfall was the lack of an O line that was molded for his style. The o line and running back coach must’ve had great chemistry with each other . What they did for those 5-6 years was unbelievable, LB had a hell of a style but I think the position coaches had a great impact on the running style.

That’s not true. Le’Veon was doing things other rbs weren’t doing the way he ran the ball. He just went to a team with a shit oline then age and injuries caught up as they do for all rbs.
As a Steelers fan, I’ve got no problem with Bell valuing himself at the time. But he had already been suspend twice for substance abuse and a third would have been a full season (see: Gordon). So I understand why the Steelers may not have wanted to go higher on their offer. It’s just a shame it went the way it did. Loved watching him play in Pittsburgh.

@@stillmatic166 Yep, and his substance abuses, made him a red flag to many of the NFL franchises. I see why Pittsburgh was cautious in signing him to the most significant contract as an HB. Pittsburgh Steelers at that time was a literal soap opera, with divas and hypocritical moral leaders making the locker room a living hell, a ticking time bomb where it would all fall apart.
I think this is hitting the nail on the head. I'm a die hard Steelers fan and it was maddening not being able to get the 3 Killer B's in more games at the same time due to one reason or another. The Steelers have never made a habit of risky signings, they just don't do it. You'll rarely be the highest paid at any position on a Steelers team, but it won't be an entirely unfair number either.
Man the most exciting player not just RB in the NFL in his prime … a joy to watch, the patience, hesitation, stiff arms, route running … he had it all .. Oline was a huge part of that tho. Steelers just could never put a decent defense around the Killer Bs … the Shazier injury really hurt

no, Tomlin let the behavior fester until it was so big he could no longer ignore it. He constantly deflected questions about Bell, let Antonio Brown become a total cancer, let JuJu make a fool of himself until he paid a price for it. Do i need to add in Mike Mitchell and others? there were so many divas that Tomlin can no longer have blame deflected from him and should be blamed.
As a ravens fan, I hated playing bell and brown during those years. I am still shocked they never won a super bowl either.

If the defence wasn't trash in those years a SB might have happened, unfortunately bell got greedy and brown went mental before the defence got better.
Bell and Brown were possibly on the best run for a few years any RB and WR ever had on the same team. They were both not prototypical for their positions yet produced absolutely off the chart statistics at the same time.
Yet when they werent the main focal points with a really good QB, they did jack squat... Just goes to show you, the grass isnt always greener on the other side. Brown had a chance with Brady, but didnt work out. If he and Bell stayed with the Steelers, they still would be the focal points on offense and probably would be still playing at a high level.
I watched this whole thing happen one game at a time. The tragedy... 😢 I've followed him on and off since he left the steelers, I always wanted him to get back to his prime, but at this point I think its safe to say its over. He blew his career for money.

It's not a tragedy. He is rich, accomplished and able-bodied. Who cares if he's no longer a great RB? There will be dozens of great RBs that come after him. Their time on top will probably be about as long as his was. Take it from an old man: This is just how it goes.

We have to consider as much as it is a dream for us to make it to the highest mountain in the sport we grew to love. It is also a business that works like every other corporation: Get the most out of people with what little you can spend on them to fuel your brand. As for the player or “worker”, they want to be valued (paid) for their services. If your intelligence is feeding a high power tech company worth billions to trillions, but you’re making $60-70k annually with limitations to move up in the company. You are going to start scratching your head and wondering “am I pulling in as much as I’m pushing out”? This goes for the professional sport industry.
It’s a business. They are employees. They have the right to want a better situation for their selves. Don’t make it seem like just because a person is a millionaire they don’t have rights.

I don't really watch football but this shows an important lesson in many sports. The setup is the most important thing. When he lost the lineup that could setup his plays for him, he stopped making plays. Star players are always propped up by teams that understand how to set them up properly.

Steelers O line was stacked. James Connor ran for 1000 yards(and 12 tds) and got 500 through the air in 12 games.
Its not flashy and doesn't show up in fantasy football, but the game is won and lost in the trenches. Just look at all the 4 division winners on each side. All have very good o and d lines.
A great example of “sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t”. That job change may look tempting because you hate your boss and don’t feel like your appreciated enough, then you go and find the new boss is even worse, but you can’t go back. Happens all the time for us regular folks. Interesting to see it play out for an NFL player on the national stage.

It didn't hurt that he had possibly the best O-line in the league at the time and ran alongside one of the most explosive passing offenses in the league. No doubt he was good, but he was also expendable to some degree, since that offense could (and did) operate well without him.

Bell should have never left that line. They were a big part of his Steelers success. I understand going for the money but you have realize your value will drop like a rock on the wrong team.
LB run style was so unique completely stopping behind the o-line patiently waiting for defenses to make a mistake, or his o-line to open a gap then explode through. Le'Veon changed the way backs became patient instead of forcing their way through closed holes they patiently wait to find openings very underrated skill to have "PATIENCE"!

The problem is THE CBA needs to be reworked for how running back contracts are dealt with.
Running backs are usually at there prime there first 2 or 3 seasons.
So teams will just run players into the ground on their rookie contract. And once their rookie contract is up instead of giving them the money they deserve you just franchise tag them like 2 times. By that time they’re like 28-29 and now you are not as explosive or as quick as you were at 22-23 and now have more injuries because you been ran into the ground and they cut you without ever having to pay you.
Remember bell had all those amazing legendary seasons on his rookie contract and two franchise tags. Getting paid barely anything. And then a slap in the face to offer a contract where only 15 percent of it is Guaranteed.
Would you work for someone where 15 percent of your salary is guaranteed? That would be an insult if someone offered me that.
Ya but RB is also a position that’s so competitive. There’s legit a line of guys capable of being productive at that position. Lack of position scarcity dictates the market. Ya can go get a 4th rounded to replace your starter at the end of their contract and be serviceable. Why would any team overpay for a position they can get at less than half price the following yr and maintain similar if not better production? RB will always pay less bc so many guys can do it. LT will always pay more bc only a few guys can even be good enough to be serviceable at it.
Steelers offered him a contract with less guarantees because Bell kept getting into trouble. People keep forgetting that part. No team is blowing the bank on a player they can’t fully trust. Especially the Steelers. If he would have kept his nose clean. He gets the big contract he wanted. Stays in that friendly RB system. Puts up all time numbers. Maybe wins a Super Bowl with the Killer Bs, Becomes a Legend. Punches his ticket to Canton. Breaks the bank on endorsements for the rest of his life. His did it to himself by missing the bigger picture.

I get him wanting more guaranteed from Pittsburg, but the weed suspension risk and everything else were legit concerns. Was on a HOF pace for sure tho. Leveon Bell's situation is exactly why I hate the franchise tag so much. Once you play out your contract you don't owe a team shit, you should be free to go wherever you want. Instead teams can use the bullshit franchise tag to force players to stay.

Bell Fall came the day he signed that contract with the New York Jet's and was never able to bounce back, Bell was going for the money 💰 rather him stay in pittsburgh which seems to have been the better situation for him
As a Steelers fan, Bell's career is a tragic tale of greed. He could've been a top 5 RB of all time, he was on pace to break countless records. Instead, he burned every bridge he had and ran his career into the ground, all for nothing.
The Steelers offered him stability with a 4 year deal, and since that offer he's an unsigned journeyman thats wasted his prime. Such a shame 🤦♂️

I thought he was a moron when he sat out a year. He was in a perfect situation with the Steelers. A good coach, good QB, good o-line, and good receiving threats. He was gonna get paid, but he'd also have the ability to put up numbers with the surrounding pieces. He decided to chase the biggest paycheck, and the team willing to pay him the most money would be the most desperate.
He went to a team with no real offensive weapons, a young QB, a weak o-line, and a dogshit coach.

Bell is still extremely talented. He didn’t fit with the Jets and didn’t get play time with the chiefs (which I believe is was one of their biggest mistakes especially in the Super Bowl) I think Tampa utilizes him a lot better. Time will tell

Leveon was the sacrificial lamb for all RBs after him. He had to take the bullets for everyone else. Even though it didn’t quite work out the way he expected, I have the upmost respect for what he chose to do. Way too many people in life are afraid to bet on themselves. He did.

I like Coach Tomlin, but he is sorta of a players coach. And that has its advantages and disadvantages. Letting influences like Blount and Brown have too much effect on a young Bell changed his future in my opinion. Brown was also given way too much leadway. He was so talented so I get why his head got big, but at a certain point, he needed a good role model and didn't have one. I think the Steelers D rebuilding during this time was also causing issues as far as role models go. 5 years prior all the best and hardest working players were on Dfense and nobody would mess with them.
