    I've used a lot of PPU ammo over the years and most of it I would not use for defensive ammo, however, it is usually pretty good quality otherwise. I've had zero issues in regards to accuracy and reliability. The 300gr 44 mag was pretty spicy and the 75gr 223 groups well in most everything I've used it in except, rather ironically, a Zastava M90 AK. I'm not surprised that these didn't perform well in regards to expansion, but I am surprised they seem to be low quality otherwise. I use their brass to reload with no issues as well. Especially in their oddball milsurp offerings. I use their brass for 6.5 Carcano, 303 British, 8mm mannlicher, 7.5 Swiss, 7.5 French, 7mm, 7.65mm, 8mm, and 6.5mm Mauser. It all holds up well. I also use the 303 British and 8mm mannlicher brass to form into 6.5x53 Dutch and 6.5x53 French respectively. Perhaps their QC has gone to crap during the pandemic? I will say that Serbian Belom ammo is decent quality in construction but very underpowered in my experience.

    I bought a bunch of ppu .44 mag about 3 years ago and I will say the stuff I bought was much better than what you were using. 240 gr. Jhp and 300gr. Sjsp .44 mag. I was shooting water jugs with the 240gr. and it was expanding just fine. I also shot a big mule deer buck with the 300gr. and it went right down. Now that you are using ballistic gel I would really like to see you retest that Buffalo Bore 10mm 180 grain XTP that was getting 1440 fps! I would like to see how it performs in the gel test. That is a crazy powerful round and would be interesting to see how it would preform against the 357 Buffalo Bore 125 grain Gold Dot round rated at 1700fps or maybe their .357 mag 180 grain XTP rated at 1500fps! I suppose we must take into account the fact that that ammo comes from a nation where they may have to shoot through a bearskin coat and several layers of coarse cloth to even GET to a bad guy...LOL. That much overpenetration really shows how important it is to test your ammo or at least do some research. A solid with a big meplat would outperform this stuff.

      I've heard a lot of bad comments on their brass and what I've heard is its really soft brass. The softness makes it really hard to get good neck tension so in a auto that could be really bad if the bullet hits the ramp and gets shoved deep in the case. Just curious what problems you've had?

    • @AllMyJointsHurt
      @AllMyJointsHurt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@biggunshandguns3687 I have had heard they use a thin walled brass which causes pre mature cracking after sizing and belling the case mouth. This also explains why some folks think its loaded hotter because the case expands and imitates harsher ejections like a hot loaded cartridge.

    • @TheTruth-sd8ey
      @TheTruth-sd8ey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a lot of experience with this ammo, since i come from ex Yugoslavia, where this thing is made. The only "good" stuff from PPU, is their military rifle line and match rifle line ammo. Good as in accurate that is. As for handgun ammo, it's the worst of the worst. The velocities are always 40-50% less then claimed, their powder is of low quality and their QC is basically non existent. And their hollow points NEVER expand, because they're not even hollow points. They simply saw off the tip and drill a hole into it. Pathetic how they even dare to export this stuff to US. As to why their handgun ammo is loaded so weak, there's a good reason for that. Their brass is so soft and thin, it'd crack open if they would try to load them properly. So don't even think about reloading their brass. Especially in .40 and 10mm. You can check yourself. Compare the brass from let's say a .44 mag from PPU and from reputable brands such as Magtech or Hornady and you'll see what i mean. You can squezee the PPU brass with your fingers and it'll easily deform. Crazy. People literally play with not only their guns, but also with their lives when they are shooting this stuff. They just don't realize it untill too late. .PPU's .40 and 10mm are especially dangerous to shoot, since they are high pressure rounds as it is and PPU brass is so thin. Now imagine what would happen if they would load their ammo to normal, proper velocities with brass as this. Kaboom!! Stay away from it!! The only ammo brand i can think off that is even worse than PPU, is Maxxtech (do not confuse the name with Magtech!) made in Bosnia, a part of Ex Yugoslavia as well. We have many good things here, but the ammo is not one of them. Cheers!

    cases expanding as if higher powered load but it's not? Check casing diameter, perhaps it's a bit smaller than normal? Then it would tend to expand to meet the sides of the chamber instead of already resting against the chamber walls and so not expanding, and any such expansion would tend to bind the casing in the chamber... this happened to me firing .22lr out of a .22mag cylinder once, by accident. Just a thought. Good video, Sam! You've gotten better with age, been watching you for a few years now.

If you did that no attorney would agree to defend you as it would jeopardize their career. Also, you would be denied bail at your hearing and later charged with homicide. If you happened to have it on you or in your vehicle and someone attacked you, you are much better off just letting them rob or assault you and take the gun from you. At least you will have a chance to sue them for the damages and what not. If you really like the look, you could totally get away with using a Deagle chambered in .22lr however.

      Seems on the mild side, usually, true, but groups well (esp. 75gr and 155gr HPBT match = sub moa out of my guns ) and is cheap and well manufactured.
      Doesn't seem to leave the guns any dirtier than other ammo either.
      The JHP designs are obviously bogus, not even sure they are marketed towards self defense usually, but generally as open tip ammo for target shooting.
      Apart from the light/fast (115gr and below) and rifle rounds I would not expect stellar expansion out of them.
      Similar stories with the cheap plinking HP stuff from other manufacturers like S&B, Magtech etc.

      Its cheap and availible, I have the 10mm XDM and have a carbine conversion and getting 1475 with it and its fun to blow stuff up for cheap. 1050 in this test of a 40 cal would wreck about any bad guy that comes around even know it wouldnt be in my gun for self defense

    I'll be surprised if either PPU bullet calibers expand. The 170gr 10mm PPU JHP bullet has NEVER expanded once for me, thank god they're cheap (They were when I bought the case anyway) but I'd never trust PPU for self-defense. Let's watch the video and see if I'm right...

    • @cekamsr
      @cekamsr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! I was right. I have a G29/3.8", Ruger GP100/4.2" & Ruger SRH/6.5" all in 10mm and I picked up a case(500rds) of PPU 10mm 170gr JHP for $200 back in 2018. I've shot wet newspaper, clay & water jugs and never once got an average hollow point expansion, just slight deformation. PPU AMMO IS NOT GOOD SELF-DEFENSE AMMO...

      I don't know of anyone who make a 10mm lever gun. I think if you are willing to pay for a custom gun you might be able to get one. If you know of anyone making them please let me know. I would love to have one.

    I’ve tried the PPU .357. It’s good if you just want something that makes a “bang” sound but in terms of anything else it’s not good. Maybe keep it around for starting races.

      It works great for my carbine conversion kit for my XDM! Hollows blow stuff up pretty good! You can see how far down the lead goes in the casing. If you want the good stuff, Buffalo Bore, Double Tapp and Underwood Extrme Penetrators are the way to go what I use when Im bow hunting in the West. But this PPU is cheap and comes in boxes of 50 with the Carbine conversion they are a LOT better 1300 FPS!

  • @ralfhtg1056
    @ralfhtg1056 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    984 feet per second?!?!?!? That is 299,9 meters per second! Pretty weak for a 10mm. In fact the most pudloaded 10mm i have ever heard of.

  • @looseballs1966
    @looseballs1966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    PPU is pretty much very crappy (don't want to say outwright junk buttttt LOL), I've shot a good bit of it actually because I bought a bunch of it a couple or so years ago, because the deal I got on it was almost better than I could get just brass for to replace some of my 357 44 and 9mm that was getting seriously long in the tooth,,,,,wellllll I kinda wish I would have just went with buying brass instead LOL,,,,the ammo is marginal (being optomistic) at best even for practice ammo and the brass is pretty low quality and very inconsistant at best,,,if all you want is some practice ammo with nearly throw away brass( I ended up tossing a bunch of it after just one reloading because I didn't like the looks of it and what the area around the base/case head and primer pockets were doing) and the price is cheap then OK but you can do much better if something (pretty much anything) is available even if it is a bit more $'s.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Underwood 10mm is some of the best though, and a buck a round for hollow points. Overall not a bad deal for what you get, something like 792 FPE with one of their 10mm's.

    • @biggunshandguns3687
      @biggunshandguns3687 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ten really is one of those rounds where reloading can reach its full potential. As long as you can find primers. Also if you use the right powder you can get the velocity you want without having a bunch of recoil

    • @markmalone279
      @markmalone279 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GunSam Yeah that's how it all should be. 180 grain pill going 1200 fps. But a dollar a round is getting a little insane in the membrane. Might as well go to .44 mag at that point.

    Jesus dude, this ammo sucks big time. Those drunken combloc engineers just sawed off the top of the bullet and drilled a hole in it. Now how can that open up without any serations and weakened lead? As for velocity, always 40% less then the claim. 😂

    That PPU 10mm was terrible. It's like a mediocre 40 S&W, and no expansion. For defense you'd do better with a good 9mm. PPU should be hanging its head in shame.
