    You should try the 10mm Liberty Civil Defense 60gr rounds. They boast 2400fps and 740fpe with massive fragmentation and 38% reduced felt recoil. Amazing carry rounds.

      Until you cross a bear, personal defense should be able to take down a wide range of things, including a large bear. And a 40 and a 45 isn’t enough for bear defense.

    Since retiring from Miami, FL to East Tennessee three years ago, I have upped my carry options from the 45ACP to the 10mm. That’s for two reasons. First, I travel the mountains regularly and we have had a considerable spike in negative human/black bear interactions over the last three years. Second, whereas Miami is the home of near perfect low fat bodies, East Tennessee is pretty much the exact opposite. I’m more likely to be accosted by an individual weighing in the 325 or much more pound range than the leaner body mass of the typical Miami bad guy. I know because I was once a State of Florida Parole Officer and I have 35 years experience as an NRA Instructor and competitive shooter. I carry either a Glock M29 or a full size Springfield Armory 1911 TRP with green CT Laser Grips.

    Derek, Very sensible talk on a good subject! I carry a 10mm 70 percent of the time. I know what it can do in a fight and place the safety of myself and my owner on that cartridge with no qualms. It is a cartridge you have to practice with though. Can't imagine that your subs number isn't higher yet, c'mon people let's spread the word on this guy! Stay safe everyone.

    Really enjoyed your video. Glock 29 is one of my CCWs. The only thing is that you should not use an aftermarket barrel for 2 legged critters. For bear and other wildlife absolutely. But soon as a prosecutor sees that it's been switched, it opens a whole new can of worms. You shouldn't ever need an AMB for defense. Just wouldn't want you all to go through the trials and tribulations others have went through. It's exhausting, expensive and life altering. Stay safe and God bless you all.

    I carry a s&w shield in 40 cal in the summer time when clothing is lighter. In the cooler months I carry a glock 29. Underwood 165,s in the glock and Winchester 180 rangers in the shield not much difference in the recoil. Either one takes some practice to tame for follow ups but it’s not that bad. I’m comfortable carrying either and both run 100 percent with the stated rounds. God forbid I should ever need to use one but if it came down to it I have faith in either gun and either round.

  • @frankbrowning328
    @frankbrowning328 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    YES! Exactly! Run a 10mm as a 10mm. There's nothing wrong with the 10mm or the 40 S&W. Use them accordingly. People who say "well I shoot a 10mm" and then use 180 gr bullets at 1000 fps are shooting 40 S&W performance rounds. I have a few 40 S&W pistols and at some point I'll also have at least 1 10mm but the 10mm will never be loaded with ammo at a 40 S&W level. I've got a few 44 mags and when I want lower performance I use 44 specials, likewise I have several 357 mags and I shoot 38 specials through them when I want/need less performance. Because these are revolver cartridges I can shoot them in the same gun. 40 S&W used interchangeably in a 10mm chamber of the same auto pistol.....that is a controversial subject. I know people shoot 40 S&W ammo in 10mm Glocks with success but the 40 S&W has to then headspace on the extractor and not (as designed) on the case mouth.

    • @thegundungeon
      @thegundungeon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @alecswann7234

      @@thegundungeon That is not realistic for most people. In fact, there are very good reasons to run light 10mm in a Glock 20 (or any 10mm). A. Many people can't afford multiple guns. One is it, and the 10mm can go from light to heavy. The beauty of the Glock 20/29 is with a barrel change you can shoot 40 S&W. In my state California, you cannot buy ammo online. Totally illegal. I just checked prices and availability at local gun stores in my area. Only one has 9mm -- at 60 cents a round and its maybe available. No 45 ACP (running around 80/90 cents a round when available briefly), no .357 ($1 a round), 10mm watered down Fiocchi is about 80 cents a round, same as .38 special when available, .40 is around 70 cents a round. B. They may be running defensive ammo with bullets designed for .40 S&W velocities not true 10mm, and that's all they can get. C. They can't afford new guns and this one has to last, true .40 S&W guns get beat up save pricey H&K or the 10mm Glocks which can handle it. D. They will mostly trade off in carry velocity for accuracy, but want the option (flexibility) of running high velocity hardcast in bear country, around pigs, etc.

    I got a g23 with a g19 upper and g19 ejector so I can shoot 9mm reliably also. I chose the g23 because 40sw is my do it all cartridge for home defense, edc and woods (no grizzlies in my area) because 40sw is very versatile with its grain sizes (even has subsonic for suppression), and capacity is very close to 9mm. I pack a 22 ground mag of 200 grain hardcast 40sw just in case I run into a black bear. It will do the job for black bears. I use 9mm for range and SHTF because 9mm is probably all you can find in a SHTF situation and it is the cheapest to shoot.
    I though about owning a 10 mm glock so I can have 10 mm and 40 sw in one gun, but I thought 9mm is more important, so g23 was my logical choice because I just wanted one gun. Even if I were in grizzly territory, I wouldn't feel safe with a 10 mm, a bare minimum for me would be a semi-auto shotgun, not even a pump, when a bear charges you cant get off enough shots with a pump especially for a griz.

    • @roosterfish3248
      @roosterfish3248 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with your logic. I have a glock 23 with a 9mm conversion. I reload .40, and with a midrange load of longshot powder, I get 1250 fps with 155 gtain xtp bullets. It ain't 10mm, but plenty power. I shot a hog in the hip about a week ago, and the bullet lodged in the opposite side shoulder, expanded nicely. He didn't take another step. Anyway, I think the glock 23 with a 9mm conversion is about the most practical, versatile set up you can get.

    Versatility is why 10 mm is so popular. I've owned a lot of 10 mm, I believe it is the best pistol round. But it is not the most concealable pistol round. But the Glock 29 is a great balance. Especially with the grip extension that slides over the 15 round Glock 20 mag. Gives you the full grip.

    The Glock 19 and the Glock 29 are basically the same size, and I totally agree, carrying a 10mm is a lot like carrying a .357. I carry a 9mm because I know under stress my groups with a 9mm will be much better than my .357, I love my 3" 686+ but more rounds are more better in today’s mob mentality environment. First I try to avoid going anywhere the crowds might turn violent, but I watched Reginald Denny get the shit beat out of them at an intersection and there was only four people there attacking him. That was 30 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. So 15 rounds in the gun is my minimum. I’d rather have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them.

      @@brutalbob3982 It depends. For a lot of people like Larry Magill of the Glock store it makes far more sense to carry Condition Three, the way the gun was designed to be carried (as a sidearm for the Austrian Military). A Glock is a poor choice for rapid deployment. It has a five pound trigger. YOU might be comfortable carrying that pointed straight at your femoral artery relying solely on the holster to keep the trigger from being pulled, I am not given how and where I carry. I would suggest that situational awareness is more important than a fast draw. But if you think that is important those who relied upon it most figured a double action revolver was the best tool or the Browning Hi Power: Jim Cirillo, Frank Serpico, Sykes and Fairbarn. FWIW a lot of undercover narcs like the 1911 pattern and are lightning fast -- it combines a light easy trigger with two safeties.

    The Sig Elite ammo is 1250fps from a 5” barrel. There’s no .40SW that even comes close to that. The Sig ammo is a mid power ammo. Underwood exceeds the original Norma loadings from a Glock 20 but you lose allot of velocity from the short G29 barrel.

      @@johnklatt3522 I sere. However you don't need more than 155 grain going 1500 fps. Id go lighter, always. and I would never use hollow points or any sort of expanding design bullets. They have always been controversial and have had years of intermittent issues.
      I don't use heavy round. The technique is now understood much better. The ideas of bullets needed to be heavy is not only wrong, it's archaic and foolish.
      Speed is what makes bullets work in the first place, so increased speed makes them work better.
      I use 111 (1700 fps) grain Hunter 45acp. it makes 700 pounds of energy which is more than some warm 10mm rounds.
      If I was to use 10mm, I'd stay with the 100 grain defender.
      There are many advantages to using lighter rounds.
      and the reason you don't want to be making any more power is because the operation of the pistol will be compromised. The weapon is designed with in a realm pressures and power guidelines. increased ability to stay on target and complete follow-up shots is also important. More power isn't always better.
      My lighter rounds allow me to operate my system much more efficiently. I can travel and move faster, & my load is much lighter. I can also keep my weapon on target longer and draw my quicker. Every single thing as an advantage when you go to the lighter rounds.

    I think you nailed the versatility of the cartridge and platform. People love .357 magnum revolvers as they can do bear defense (black ones anyway, not sure about browns) or hunt pigs and definitely deer, or can be loaded lighter with .38 special and still perform well. The Glock 29 with a .40 barrel and one aftermarket 10 lets you shoot heavy cast lead Buffalo Bore monsters, soft 40 S&W, and anything in between.
    I think however the light 9mm are an experts gun like the airweight J frames. They are hard to shoot, jam a LOT, and have very marginal ballistic performance at those barrel lengths. Just like .38 special is just fine out of a 6 inch barrel for many purposes and "ok" in a 4 inch barrel, miserable often in a 1.78 inch barrel, so too is the 9mm great in a 5 inch barrel from say a M&P full size and not very great in a mini 9. JMHO.

The .40 casing is shorter so I’m confused how you shot .40 out of it I know it’s the same diameter but I was told you can’t shoot .40 out of a 10mm vice versa… unless that wolf barrel is the way you can? Is it like the 223 Wyled but for .40 and 10mm?

      Technically you can shoot .40 from a 10mm chamber, but I suggest not doing it. Only bad shit can happen. The bullet is the same, but the head spacing is not. It’s not the same as a Wylde chamber that can shoot both 5.56/.223. It’s a hybrid and was built specifically for that. Don’t let people tell you it’s ok, just don’t do it. If you want to practice a bit cheaper, simply buy a conversion kit or a .40 cal.

    You also shoot 180gr bullets apparently. It seems to me that the lighter 10mm loads would recoil less, even if they have the same energy. I know they make 130gr loads that are relatively normal designs, along with some really light loads that I'm less sure about ballistically. I'm personally looking for something more powerful than 9mm for carry and I'm considering my options. I wish they made the G29 MOS, I worry that if i buy one now they might come out with an mOS version. Honestly though, it seems like they aren't going to bother.

    You a very key point that I very seriously doubt people take seriously and lie about there skill.you need to train a lot if you plan to carry a 10mm and use full house loads. I know for a fact that people always think they are better than they really are. I see it every week at a steel plate match. People will talk up their skill level then go shoot at a 8 inch plate at 13yds and maybe hit 2 out of 6. Just the tiny amount of pressure that a clock adds will make a average shooter and make him look like a beginner. So the key is train and train a lot.
    My personal opinion on all these super tiny 9mm and guns like the glock 40 cal 27 are a joke. I have carried a full size all steel 1911 in 45 for the last 22 years. It's what I shoot best and what I have the most muscle memory with. Clint Smith the owner of thunder ranch put it best. Your carry gun should be comforting not comfortable. That's coming from a man that has been there done that more than once and has the scars to prove it.

    90% of factory 10mm ammo is no better than .40. If you’re gonna carry and shoot a Glock 20 or 29, or any other 10mm, you really need to reload.
