Heck Yeah, Bro. Jeff Carlisi was, and still is.... just an AWESOME guitarist. Blues based, and not really a shredder or anything... but you hit it. He was always such a tasteful and killer player. I could never get enough of his guitar playing. LOVE 38 Special. One of my 5 All-Time favorite Bands for sure. Seen em' several times live, and NEVER came out disappointed. And just so much fun to jam their songs on guitar.
I'm a deep southern man who loves those deep southern bands. Great job as always david. Your my favorite TH-cam guitarist, most knowledgeable instructor. 47 years of playing and you always teach me new things and approaches to looking at my playing. Love 💘 😻 it man!
Don Barnes called what they did melodic muscle. Saw them in 1984 with Huey Lewis and in 1996 at 6 Flaggs. My wife and I were at the left front of the stage right in front of Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes. Don Barnes was playing his now legendary '58 Les Paul Junior. Love Jeff's playing but He's no slouch either. 🎸
I was fortunate enough to see them around 83 or 84 and they sounded exactly like the record live they had one of the best live sounds I'd ever heard. I remember as a kid thinking wow these guys sound really good. Thanks for the lesson you rock!
That was my recollection too. Sounded very much like the album. Only other band I remember seeing that nailed the recorded sound that closely was Audley Freed and Cry of love
According to Jeff Carlisi he played many of those amazing memorable solos in the studio on his Les Paul Deluxe with the mini humbuckers because of his love of Barry Bailey's playing from Alanta Rhythm Section.
I saw .38 Special open for Eric Clapton back in 82’ when they were really starting to heat up on FM stations. Great night of rock and blues. Much more AOR/FM radio friendly back in 80s compared to some other Southern Rock acts, they were a big part of my high school years.
Interesting band. Definitely part of the 70's soundtrack. Ronny Van Zant brought the attention to them but they had some very catchy tunes that were more poppish and less southern. Great lesson. Thanks Dave!
More 80's. But yeah - lateer 70's and first half of the 80;s .... these guys were epic. They even had a bit of a resurgance in the late 80's and did a little into the 90's. GREAT rock band.
As a Jacksonville native, it’s always great to see how Jax has produced so many fantastic bands, or have roots here. I went to the same high school as some of these guys and my marine biology teacher was originally the bass player in .38 Special before they became mega famous in the 80s LOL! Derek Trucks (heard of him😉?) and Susan Tedeschi also live here. TTB would be a great one to do a chord play or licks video about if you haven’t done one already! ✌🏻🎸🎶
.38.....Skynyrd....Hatchet.....the mecca of southern rock! And all those bands from north FL like the Allmans and Petty....most do not realize what an influence that area is.
@@doctordetroit4339 Don’t forget the awesome Don Felder , who (IMO) , really put The Eagles into the “Rock” arena sound , outside of their Byrds/Country influence sound (he wrote Hotel Cal.) - a Gainesville native , and Tom Petty’s original guitar teacher . A lot of musical talent and roots across Fl. - gem of a state , IMO
The hits keep coming. The lead guitar work on 38 really was the topper from this southern fryed rock band. Good time music. Your perspective and lessons are the best man thx...🤘💪🎸
Always loved and always will love 38 Special! I had a once in a life time chance to open for them back in ‘09. Back then Don Barnes and Danny Chauncey was using a Line 6 Pods for their live shows! I could not believe it, but there tech showed me their setup and it sounded great.
Wow! What a killer little piece of info!! Both that you had the chance to open for them - and that they were using the Line-6 PODs live. Wow!!!! I saw them around that time, and you're right. They sounded AWESOME! Always missed Jeff Carlisi. But Danny Chauncey was awesome in .38. In fact, for a little while, it was Chauncey and Carlisi doing the guitar playing, while Don took his leave for a few years.
I bought the first generation POD , back in 1999 , I think it was , and that piece of gear has NEVER had any issues whatsoever, amazingly enough. It’s a great little addition for dialing in an array of tones and settings in a quiet , small room setting for practice- never tried to use it in a live /PA situation, but I’ve no doubt I’d be surprised with it.
You knocked me out with this one Dave. Your brilliance is immeasurable. Thank you for this great video on my favorite band. Please consider Atlanta Rhythm Section and Lynnyrd Skynnyrd, (Excuse the spelling🙊). 🙏💖💖💖
Amazing lesson / episode David !! I knew about 38Special but I never dove deep into there chords?! I like that type layering of chords! Not hard to fall in love with this type of style! As per usual David you've done it again! Thanks
JUST AWESOME! Saw them in the Early 2000s in NJ.... Songs Still Sounded like they were Right Off The Album. Not in the sense they became their own CoverBand.... Same Tone,Vocals were EPIC, Wish they would have played Longer,It was an Outdoor Local Radio Station Run Multi Band Lineup, Quiet Riot,.38 Special, Skid Row,Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister,a couple of Local Bands in between. Great Bands,Great Music, One of those Concerts where They All Kicked Ass, And Wish You could have had The Gig TAPED,And, be able to listen to it FOREVER. WISH EVERYONE WOULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO HEAR IT. ONCE IN A LIFETIME 🤘😎💕🙏👍
Funny band. Growing up I never thought anybody in the band could really blow your hair back. But their songs were all great and they had tone and sounds that we were craving back then. Side note, thanks so much for the amount of content you're putting out brother. Much appreciated
Oh yeah man!! Yes!!! One of my all-time favorite bands, for sure. And definitely my all-time favorite Southern Rrock Band. You're spot on - there is just something about that Band, and the way they put their music together. All of it. The great leads, the great melodies, the chord progressions. Etc, etc. They were so awesome. Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi one of the greatest twin guitar attacks of all time. And yeah - they went more and more melodic arena rock, as time went. But to me... the Southern Rock was still, and always a part of it. Great, great Band. And a KILLER live Band. I miss Carlisi being in it, and now... the Band is nothing more than Don Barnes, and a bunch of other guys. But hey - still doing the music. It doesn't seem to want to die! It was * that * good. By the way.... that Les Paul and your amp and mix is killer on this. Sounds great! I LOVE playing Hold ON Loosely on guitar. Such a fun song to jam with.
Absolutely AWESOME.... LOVE THIS! Thanks for posting! Used to play several .38 special songs back in the day (from Strength in numbers and Tour De Force). Loved how the different guitar parts come together. Most of their songs were like this, you could go on forever. Thanks again, and keep them coming!
You are one of the few tutorial channels that I absolutely love. I've been playing many of these songs for years and have been very close to what you are playing. But I really enjoy the extra commentary that you add, make the video very interesting to me. Thanks again for sharing!!
Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi were the 38 Special sound … not really sure how much Johnnie VanZant added other than his last name … so many great songs … Chain Lightning is one of my favorites … excellent offering !!!
Recently watched a great interview with Jeff Carlisi , and he mentioned that The Cars ( which were peaking in fame at the same time as 38 Special) were a big influence on 38 Special , and you can hear it in the rhythm approach in many of their songs
.38 really hit the jack pot on "Special Forces" and "Tour De Force" Those albums were money. I don't know if was the playing, the production, or what. I really liked "Strength In Numbers" too.. I saw them on the "Tour De Force" tour....they are spot on.
Yes. All of it. I think they literally nailed all of it during that stretch of time. Perfect playing, mix, production, live sound, and just the prefect players for that Band. They were an awesome Rock and Roll outfit. One of my all-time faves.... still to this day. The good stuff like this... doesn't die, Bro!
Great video I saw them live after Jeff left and Don covered alot of the parts he played. Love Carlisi but Don did a great job too. Very underrated band, players AND obviously song writers
Hi David thanks for another great demo lesson! Could you please let me know where you got the Jimi Hendrix figure beside the audio speaker to the left of the screen as I view it. Looks like the Woodstock outfit, thanks in advance for a reply . 🌠🌌🕊🙋♂️
Great Lesson always loved just how melodic 38 special we're,even the solos. This is such a great example of different guitar parts working together. Always good well explained lessons Personally like anything theory related.Early 70's Aerosmith another 2 guitar band could be a good example.I'm partial to the 70's when I was in my teens.Great work David Thank You always!!
There is an outstanding video on youtube titled "How to Play Fantasy Girl by .38 Special on Guitar" it's over an hour long with Jeff Carlisi the man who wrote and played the song. It goes deep into the history of .38 and Jeff, and the bands inspirations on songwriting. If I remember right David got it right.
Dave, awesome lesson as usual. I love .38 Special. Just wanted to offer a suggestion, for your viewers that may not be familiar with the material. I think it would be very helpful to play a short clip of the progression from the recording so people have an idea what to listen for. That is all. Carry on!
Fun Fact about 38 Special( not the band the handgun)- when it was a police issued side arm, they were useless, in any shootout it was a suicide mission because the ammo didn’t have enough kick to it to do anything. Throwing the handgun at the criminal and hitting them had a better chance to take them down, thus born.38 special. Same ammo but a bit longer, more gun powder, much more kick and effective…like the band!
I always liked their music/sound, even though I was an 80’s Metal head. Every time I hear Back to Paradise and some of their other tracks, it always reminds me of The Revenge of the Nerds movie sequels. 😂
My goodness this is awesome stuff. First person I’ve heard play something like you right. I agree it sounds better there, I have seen some live clips and he looks higher on neck but not sure he’s doing that hybrid thing. Great video
The layered guitar parts in No other night remind me a little of Queen, who if I’m not mistaken was one of their influences. Check out First Time Around by them a very underrated riff with the classic 2 guitars working
Hi again, I noticed on your Les Paul Standard that on the Bridge Pickup it says Seymour Duncan. Is that pickup a JB pickup or '59 pickup from Seymour Duncan. Awesome sound. Did you just change the pickups and the electronics too, like the Pots, from 250K to 500K. Sorry for the many questions.

"Fantasy Girl" was my favorite .38 Special song. I loved that band! Great rockers.
Awesome just awesome!! Please do a 38 special licks lesson. Jeff Carlisi is so so tasteful

Use to wear 38 Special out!!!...Thanks for the Lesson
Great explanations! Great Examples! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Been playing 38 special for 30 years and even I still learned something new! Thank You.
Thanks David, nice trip back in time.
I really like the outro solo on "Hold on Lucy"
Thanks B🐓!

Mad respect for 38 special🎸✌
Robin Hood off Rockin' Into the Night was always my fav by them.

What's up David? Great band. Fantasy girl is my favorite by them. Peace.
Thanks, David! Thanks for covering so many amazing guitar styles! Great Lesson!!!!! Beautiful double guitar sounds!
According to Jeff Carlisi he played many of those amazing memorable solos in the studio on his Les Paul Deluxe with the mini humbuckers because of his love of Barry Bailey's playing from Alanta Rhythm Section.
Barry Bailey is a great player!
Thanks Dave! Great insight.
I had always believed .38 Special had THREE guitar players...You cleared that up!
38 Special definitely had 2 drummers!
Beautiful. Pick me upper lesson. Thank you.
Amazing as always David !! A very underrated band. I think the Chords/Licks of REO SPEEDWAGON and Gary Richrath is a worthy video.
Flying Turkey Trot is a classic
@@SuperHorsecow Or even the Flying Tuna trot
I'd love it!

I like how you breakout the small parts. It's so cool how the parts come together to make a great sound and song! Great video!

FANTASTIC !!!
I saw 38 special a couple years ago in bethel ny with the Marshall tucker band and lynyrd! So awesome
Man, that Caught Up in You video cracks me. The drunk dufus at the bar drinking and then falling over at the end. 😂 Love Jeff's melodic lead work 👍🎵🎶🎸
I have always loved how Hold on Loosely has a nicely obfuscated chromatically descending bass line. Great Lesson!
The late great Larry "LJ" Junstrom who passed away fairly recently. Great rock solid player. Saw them twice.
The hits keep coming. The lead guitar work on 38 really was the topper from this southern fryed rock band. Good time music. Your perspective and lessons are the best man thx...🤘💪🎸
Simple but innovative riffs. Great writing from 38 Special. Nice lesson!

Hey David, great video but still waiting on your Les Paul Story..
Definitely a underated band. They were so great to listen to.
Thank you David, this is one of your best. Love that band and so appreciate you unlocking some of those great riffs.
Love Jeff Carlisi ❤️One of the masters of the melodic major scale lead break:)
I used to "play" but I don't any more. Your explanations of the music of my youth are still enjoyable and educational. Thank you.
Thanks!
Haven`t heard to 38 Specials in a long while.
Brought back a lot of memories.
Tanks!
I’m a drummer / keyboardist, and I really learn a lot from you! Thanks for breaking this stuff down so well!
special forces is a great record. 👍
38 special.... Yea.... Rockin' awesome from back in the day
According to an interview I heard, the guitar player heard The Cars and he coped their staccato chugs.

great lesson, great band
one of my faves too
Jeff Carlisi's melodic soloing shows just how much you can get from major scales.
Always liked their guitar player (is it Jeff Carlisi?).
Looking forward to watching the lesson.
Jeff and Don Barnes. Don was/is no slouch as a guitar player.
Radio Hits! Hell Yeah
Such an underrated band especially in the guitar department. Jeff’s such a joy to listen too, grit with melody love it .
Awesome David.. great band and amazing melodic guitar playing
That "Somebody Like You" opening riff was just what I was looking for! I've found the rest elsewhere! THANKS & kind regards!
Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi were the 38 Special sound … not really sure how much Johnnie VanZant added other than his last name … so many great songs … Chain Lightning is one of my favorites … excellent offering !!!
Underrated guitar catchy playing and writing, great episode!
Great video! Jeff Carlisi is a household name in my house : )
Got the strength in numbers picture too🤘🤘 love 38
Dang David, Thanks for redressing m memory of the songs I haven't played in a while. Jam on dude!!!.
Great band, one of the best live bands ever.
Awesome job as usual. Would’ve loved a little Robin Hood off Rockin’ into the Night but I know you can’t play em all. Thanks
Great choice -- hidden gem of a band, definitely underrated ;-)

You nailed everything!!
Great lesson man. Thank you. All that helps me out a lot. I love 38 special ❤❤
Wishbone Ash also had a great twin guitar sound with cool interplay.
Great video

Great video David! 38 Special was one of my favorite bands in high school and into college. Then Don Barnes left ☹️.
I’m been thinking about getting the xotic sl drive & thanks for the 38 Special lessons 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great! Carlisi learned his N. Schon lesson well since Hold on loosly has some of Journey´s Anyway you wnat it in it... me thinks

Love the Special...
Dave, awesome lesson as usual. I love .38 Special.

I think it would be very helpful to play a short clip of the progression from the recording so people have an idea what to listen for.

Thanks for the video. Love it. I will have to rewatch this for sure. Any chance you could show us how to play I oughta let go?
Never dawned on me...how similar 38 Special and much farther up north, the Cars were in guitar rhythms/technique. ; /
I'm so caught up in Late Night Lessons.
How about doing the chords of Moby Grape, 1st album, and Spirit, I got a line on you and Nature's way....
You should do chordplay of some awesome older Canadian bands such as Coney Hatch, Kick Axe, Helix, Killer Dwarfs, Trooper, Etc.,
Hi again, I noticed on your Les Paul Standard that on the Bridge Pickup it says Seymour Duncan. Is that pickup a JB pickup or '59 pickup from Seymour Duncan. Awesome sound. Did you just change the pickups and the electronics too, like the Pots, from 250K to 500K. Sorry for the many questions.
I have that 1986 album you got encased in a frame too the “38” numbers are cut out and the colors are on the sleeve that holds the record…good album.
Great video. I like your chilled out way of presenting. Have always liked 38 Special. Hey, BTW, if you don't mind. Which pickups are you using in that Paul? Looks like Duncans, at least on the bridge.
