Chordplay - The Chords of The Cult

  • Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of The Cult.
The Cult hail from Bradford, England and formed in 1983, and guitarist Billy Duffy definitely created a unique approach, sound, and direction for the group using his innovative playing style, chord selection, seemingly random use of effects, biting guitar solos, and much more.
This lesson focuses on a number of great chord-based guitar parts from their selection of albums and music, and includes huge hits such as 'Fire Woman,' 'She Sells Sanctuary,' 'Love Removal Machine,' and many more.
This lesson also features a few ideas from their brilliant (and nearly-forgotten) album 'Beyond Good And Evil' from 2001. While the album was basically panned by radio, MTV, and many fans of the band when it was released, in hindsight - this album is one of the greatest hard rock albums of the 21st century and should be discovered, revisited, and enjoyed by everyone that likes classic rock and hard rock music.
This was a fun lesson to put together and should have something to learn for almost everyone. Give it a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I grew up listening to an eclectic mix that included the bagpipes and Celt folk music. When I first heard The Cult (and AC/DC of course), I could hear those influences in Billy Duffy’s playing. My dad had no use for Hard Rock music or any Rock music, but there were some Cult (and AC/DC) tunes he liked.
I’m a bit older than you Dave and when someone mentions sus4 chords and a certain Rock guitarist, my first thought is Pete Townsend and then Eddy.

Sir you are killing it with this stuff. Steely Dan, Rik Emmet, Funkadelic, now the Cult. Just re realized how great this guy is. She Sells Sanctuary is just an amazing tune. It's a flanger on that one. Thanks for your content. I think you nailed it when you said it draws you in. As soon as he starts it's like oh this is going to be good.

Loved it. In that time period, the wide appeal was a bit unusual. To oversimplify, the overlap between the Headbanger's Ball & 120 Minutes - while still appealing to the frat crowd, etc. Anyway, they are brilliant and unique. I always loved Billy's combo of great classics like Marshall's paired with a Roland Jazz Chorus (now, also a true classic). They made a truly original mark, but Love and the Manner Sessions remain my favs, but all of it is good (even Ceremony has some great things).

At 10:28 you make the statement that it's a very basic intro but also very effective. I think those are harder to write in my opinion. To play a simple figure but get something creative out of it with space and timing and have an impact on people that's impressive.

Fire woman is the best example of a simple pattern that just gets under your skin. A simple melody that just wont let go. As David says the fast flying technique is a flamethrower that burns for a second but diesnt warm the soul. I believe fire wonan is in a major chord progression. Usually major cant do this. The ulttimate.

Bingo! What you play has to be musical, yay! There's nothing wrong with shredding but it has to be the servant not the master. Just think of the success and exposure Billy has had compared to the pure shredders. Love Removal Machine reminds me of Start Me Up by the Stones? These lessons really inspire me, thank you.

I've had their concert DVD of the 'Beyond Good & Evil' tour, 'Live Cult (Music Without Fear)' since it first came out. It's a very good show to have if you collect any of those type of videos. Even if a small or moderate collector of them, it is one I'd highly recommend.

Thank you for this! Billy Duffy is so interesting and unique as a guitarist. I had a vinyl copy of "Electric" that I wore out, learned every riff. I loved that they were simple enough for a beginner to learn, but totally rocked. One question: how can you talk about "Love Removal Machine" without even mentioning the Stones, "Start Me Up"? It's basically the same riff." I know Van Halen was all about the sus, but that song is clearly aping the Stones, not Valen.
