      This is how I sell companies on free, open source software. I finally convinced a client to go all in on open source when we were developing a POC. They ended up needing a feature that hadn't yet been developed. I created an issue on GitHub, submitted a PR with the fix, and the maintainer accepted the fix all in the same day. The client was blown away.
      Yes, I understand the differences between free and open source, but companies don't tend to care about that as much unfortunately, and using all open source software is still better than nothing.
      On a personal note, it's really nice to be able to submit patches and features to the tools we use. I just submitted a fix for Piper to allow binding my Logitech's left/right scroll-wheel clicks.

      I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

    • @NomoregoodnamesD8

      The meat of grep is command line parsing (getopt.h), regular expressions (regex.h, C++11 std::regex), and directory iteration (dirent.h, C++17 std::filesystem).
      The only algorithm a programmer would have to implement for grep would be KMP or another fast substring match algorithm (when not using regex matching), but KMP is fairly simple with only 4 cases to consider when detecting a mismatch.
      The rest of grep is just reading a line from the current file (or stdin) and pretty printing it if it's a match (or not a match in the case of '-v' ).
      In fact most of the time *will* be spent on making sure all of the pretty print options work.

      I hear you both. When I speak about grep I also include the libraries it needs. Those do the work, right, but when you would write it from the ground up without using the libraries, it would suck. Some implementations that use regexes, like the python one iirc, were implemented badly and performance drops significantly when handling long prefixes or suffixes. It's just one example, but covering most or all, like grep and it's libraries do, cannot be done properly over a weekend.

    For me personally, Free software is about sharing the source code, discussing it, making it better; together. The community and learning are where the appeal is. Before proprietary software became glorified adware/spyware, it didn't matter to the lay user if the quality of code was top notch or not, as long as it helped get their work done. I loved Windows XP and still do, mainly because that was the only thing I used before Linux, and it worked fine. I didn't want to customize every line of code in it and didn't care whether I "had the option" or not.

    Propietary software needs to be sold, no matter through hardware or through itsself, so "sellability" comes before simplicity or performance. If you buy a product, you better expect it to do the thing it promised and not need another package to do an additional thing, which isn't the issue with free software of course as you just use the thing that serves you better

  • @JohnvanCapel
    @JohnvanCapel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don't have to subscribe to the "all software should be free" ideology, or even be particularly tech-savvy, to enjoy the practical benefits of Free Software.
    For one, if anyone can look at and modify the source code? That means the program was written with that in mind. You practically can't hide a malicious function in code anyone can see and modify, nor can you leave a bug without it getting fixed one way or the other.
    You also get the benefit of programs that were written for edge cases and low-end hardware, because people who wanted that edge-case or wanted it to run on their 13+-year-old Thinkpad submitted code changes to make that stuff work.

  • @Kaucukovnik666
    @Kaucukovnik666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I don't think it's this clear cut. Take for example systemd. Even if I could understand the source, it's so massive no single person likely knows it in its entirety. Motives of its developers can easily be questioned, and much simpler critical pieces of FOSS have been compromised in the past, be it by accident or intentionally. So effectively it's as good as closed source.
    It's kind of like saying: "What can be wrong with any food being sold in stores? Anyone can do chemical analysis, right?"
    Sure, I can go for a non-mainstream distro that doesn't include systemd. This means far less readily available software, and no, compiling stuff yourself is not as dead simple as FOSS proponents usually make it out to be.
    Furthermore, unlike commercial software, the deciding factor on who gets to develop the most of an open project is who has the most time and willingness to do it.
    Richard Stallman is able to practice what he preaches only because that's precisely what he makes his living through. I admire the man, acknowledge his importance, but from the perspective of someone who treats a computer as a tool and/or entertainment device, his approach for the most part defeats the purpose of having a computer.

    Not every free and open source software is easy to reproduce. For example dwm, can anybody reproduce it overnight? Is it just that simple? Free and open source software is also prone to bloat. In fact, rsm literally claimed it. Unless you follow the unix philosophy or even just minimalism, every software is prone to bloat. It is just too hard to not implement features otherwise, as the gnu utilities did. They added features, features that we don't need, bloat. cat was so simple in unix, why does it have so many options in gnu?
    My point is not to tell people that free software is bad. Proprietary software is infinitely bad, if you don't wanna become a slave, don't use it. But the design choices are independent of the licensing. It's possible to make more minimal and better software that is proprietary but i won't use it anyways. unix had proprietary licensing at the beginning but they changed it.

Because remote ssh tools is close source I cannot just fork and fix it; You can say VSCode core itself is open but I had to write everything from scratch for remote tools I don't have that much free time. So not only opensource is not enough but GPL is a necessity for really free environment. Half free can very easily be locked down, BSD is very good example, VSCode is good example, it is backwards, limited and anti competition,

    • @stackspace
      @stackspace 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Minhaj Shovon Great question.
      Here are some answers (not comprehensive):
      1) Writing code is almost always done to make something easier for humans (even things you don’t think about, like “just passing the time”). This means that you are never really writing code “for free,” you are just getting some other benefit in return.
      Releasing your code on the internet for free to people who might also find it useful is just a fuzzy warm feeling plus
      2) it sounds like you’re thinking of the word “free” as in zero dollars, but if you think about “free” as in “open and available to anyone and everyone,” then you get feedback on your code from real software developers who are actually smarter than you.
      Over the years, I’ve contribute to and started many github projects. I was completely shocked one day to find that a group of computer science students at a university nowhere near me had forked one of my projects and worked it to make it significantly better.
      This only happened because I released the code for free, and, I was able to get the improvements they added as a free bonus which ultimately made the code I had written to solve my original problem just better all around.
      3) writing code is fun! Or it can be. If you want to monetize something you love doing, do it! But realistically, unless you are working at a massive company that is funding your project you are just hobbling yourself by not allowing other developers to contribute to your project

    I wish FOSS had good user interfaces. To most people, the interface is far more important than the functionality. If the functionality doesn't get discovered in an intuitive way, it is non-existent to them.
    P.S. Disconnected and buggier proprietary software has nothing to do with it being FOSS or not. The bigger issue is that software companies are choosing a modern philosophy to development (agile) over more traditional and stable ideas (waterfall) 'Agile' programming leads to poor software quality with little planning and a disconnected user experience.

    I think the real question is why use only free software?
    Using free software is part of a transition to being part of a community and building this thing and shit. Proprietary software is certainly "worse", but it works and gets the job done mostly without a manual, it is "intuitive", the cursor is intuitive. The keyboard is not as welcoming as a mouse on a pretty and already done interface as MacOS or Windows 10 for most people, we all can argue that MacOS os way less customizable and "learnable" than Linux, the T2 chip doing too much shit encrypted (being more than one things) and being unreplaceable without apple proprietary hardware to reprogram it, but we can't argue about MacBooks sound quality, it's just better than the competition, same for the touchpad and screen. Free software still is not enough today to replace everything that proprietary software does, but it'll hopefully grow with time

      does free software kill creativity? no. there is a lot of free software that is unique. the web controlled by google is just the new windows controlled by microsoft so the browser example doesn't really count.

Being web dev i remember "good old days" when web was much simpler and easier to use and develop for, now i just shudder looking at all this shit that is goes in, for example, html request.

      Google is just a front company for US military intelligence. The internet was designed as a surveillance killgrid. People like to get sentimental and nostalgic for the earlier phases of the project, when they knew the userbase was limited to academic and scientific demographics. The rise in the internet's general oppressiveness directly correlates with the expansion of its userbase. Now that every average asshole has a smartphone crammed up it and these lunatics are sharing our Information Super Highway, the 'Police presence' is much greater than it used to be. The analogy will become real in the future; you watch and see. Surfing the web will finally be declared dead, the same year that everyone is forced to switch to driverless cars.

    Ubuntu... isn't that the distro that sends your search results to some "small" multinational corporation? what was that name again? Sahara? no. Nile? no. AMAZON! that's the one. Isn't Ubuntu that one Linux distro that sends all your desktop searches to Amazon?

    • @AlucardNoir

      @Steven Tsakiris Before Ubuntu came back to Gnome they used their own in house unity. When Unity started in 2012 it wasn't just unity that was new, the search function in unity also sent all your searches to Canonical who themselves sent them to Amazon and then sent you the results. Basically if you wanted to start a program via search Amazon new about it. If you wanted to open a file via searching for it Amazon knew about it. Even if they didn't know it was you, Canonical sure as fuck did.
      Basically, if you installed Ubuntu with the default choices they made every search query you made would be sent to Canonical and Amazon. Canonical claimed they weren't sending your data to Amazon but you sure as fuck had no assurance about that.
      When they came back to gnome in 2016 they abandoned the idiotic we'll know every time you use search option and the Amazon integration turned into an affiliate link to the amazon store - were everything you buy via that link also puts a few pennies into the coffers of Canonical.
      But this doesn't change the fact that for a few years Ubuntu was basically as secure as windows 10 was. If after that you're still willing to trust them...
      As for proof, either google
      ubuntu unity amazon search
      or just go here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_(user_interface)#Privacy_controversy and follow the references.

      @Steven Tsakiris ...oh, and just so we understand one another, this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle#Criticism is just the start of my distrust of Amazon. If an actual brick and mortar book store had broken into my house to do that I would be beyond livid, but people seems to be ok with Amazon's actions and keep using them.

    As a certified wordnigga, did you make a conscious decision to pronounce it wrong, or are you just trying to piss me off?
