  • How do you plan a resupply using the mail? What is a 'Mail Drop' and how do I create one? Can I really send myself supplies? Does USPS, in fact, ROCK? What about cheese?
In this video I talk about the What, Where, Why and How of resupply...
Sending a mail drop via any carrier is essentially the same process. Even if you are not using USPS for your mail drop, the information here can be applicable across different logistics and transportation companies. Here I try to take the hassle and worry out of packing a box of food, repackaging that food, calling ahead and finally mailing the box out.
I have prepared 11 days of food split into 2 boxes of 100 and 75 miles. Each box you send will be different depending on the considerations you have and where you are going! I walk through some of these considerations and more...
All this and more in this video brought to you by Steamboat.
    More trail adventures to come!

Very well done, Sir!! I love the suggestion of calling ahead to make sure "they" are accepting boxes in this crazy time that we find ourselves in....

Thanks Robert, especially with so many businesses opening and closing, making sure to check ahead will alleviate some headaches for sure.

For USPS bounce boxes (like for cold weather stuff etc) you can just keep forwarding the same box 100-200 miles up the trail directly to a USPS post office for NO additional cost. You only have to pay more if you open a box. It's great for mailing emergency type gear like replacement shoes, poncho, cold weather bag etc.

Very helpful. I've never done a thru hike, but I'm thinking about trying a short one sometime this year. it's pretty much what I figured it would be, but I wasn't 100% sure, so thanks.

Question 1. Don't those Annies mac and cheese require milk? Do you use creamer or something?
Question 2. is it possible to ship fuel cannisters? ...and how?

Hey thanks for the comment and glad you found this helpful.
      1. With Mac and cheese I just add water. While it does taste better with butter and milk, leaving a small amount of water in the pot to mix it with does just fine. I have carried powered milk at times and have added a little bit of this too.
      2. Fuel canisters CANNOT be shipped with priority mail. You may be able to send these via Ground, but the rules are a little weird. More often than not, cans are easy to come by in trail towns and other stops
