Don’t over think it. Nobody ever starved to death on the AT.

Tuesday, March 05th: Most of us eat what is available. While nutrition is important, if the food items are unavailable, then the diet changes. IMHO. Good luck! Happy Trails! Ross08

I prepped all of my food before my hike, 180 days worth, and had boxes sent a week or so ahead of me as I went along. I need a special diet, and it would have been nearly impossible to supply as I went. It worked for me.

I did what you did except I took it a step further, I'm freeze drying all my food.
If you're interested I uploaded a video to my TH-cam channel that goes over everything. The video is episode 6 of a journey in the making.

@360Investigations I briefly considered incorporating that into the mix. I like the texture of most foods better in a dehydrated form. I did include a lot of freeze-dried fruits. I think I would enjoy freeze-dried greens to add some nutrition.

@@seanwilson6521 Just curious if you watched that video. Sure it's mainly about freeze drying, however it goes over several things regarding food and nutrition that can be applied to any situation

You’ll have opportunity to mix it up when you’re out there and you’ll also get ideas from others along the way.

Your body will let you know what it needs. Listen to it.

Love the food choices, I recommend you also try the Kind bar protein, also the Gatorade bars in peanut flavor, so yummy

First few days it's Fig Newtons for me. That's all I can handle for at least 3 days.

Same for me. I can't tolerate food for the first few days.

For those that want an in depth understanding of what's required on a hike food wise, episode 6 of a journey in the making contains all that.
It's a video here on my youTube channel

I love the Peak Refuel meals. Your tastes will change on trail though. You will want more treats and sugar probably than you ever do. I crave soda and candy more than I typically do when I am off trail.

Don't overworry the protein thing. People always overestimate their protein "needs". As a vegan my protein choices are more narrow than yours, but even so, things like peanut butter are always widely available everywhere.

I did my through AT back in ‘86 so didnt have all these new options for non meat/fish proteins. We still had lots of options back then we just didn’t know it then and for me it was a normal meal ( I was a legal war refugee then). Could not find my still favourite candy so just like my meat had to make it at home. But my main meals were lentils with rice and dehydrates vegetables and rock hard dried meat called biltong. My breakfast was Red River hot cereal that I added corn meal to, and powdered milk with dried fruits. I also carried a jar of lard to add to every meal for the extra energy. lol yes I also carried a tin or two of kippers or sardines.
Next year I will do the AT at the age of 77 and I know I will finish. I really won’t even change my food choices except I found a few years back a UK company that makes a ration that is extremely small and light but packs a hug hit of calories and various nutrients. And I will probably enjoy the AT now more than back in the day because my load out is a million pounds lighter🤣😂 and I won’t be taking my tinnys of fish. I found Inuit candied salmon, still not peanut brittle but darn great!

Good call! I try for 125 grams at least per day on trail

You should focus on getting enough calories, not worrying about protein. If you can get enough calories, you will be getting enough protein without even having to try.
