That dinner is perfection. I stumbed across something very similar on one of my first hikes when I threw together a mixture of odds and ends that were left in my food bag. Except I cook mine, and I add cheddar cheese and hot sauce. I called it backpacker nachos. Good by itself, even better rolled up in a tortilla.
Some sad news about Santa Fe beans- it's been hard to find them recently and I sent an email to check when they might be available again, and I learned of the passing of the owner, Grant Bassett. By all accounts he was a great guy and pillar of his community and it's a terrible loss for his family. If you're like me and have been missing santa Fe beans a lot over the year or two, I urge that you're patient and support the company when they do get back on their feet!
I've been eating the couscous meal you posted about, oh, I don't know a couple years ago? The couscous Olive oil, raisins, and some kind of nuts like pine nuts or something. It's really good
Great inspiration and tips for preparing meals for a long hiking trip! Rice and beans and bars are always a good choice and a good source of energy ;) Looking forward to your videos of your new PCT life. Good luck and health for this upcoming adventure. Have a wonderful week. Best wishes, Mario
Ok I make a pretty similar dinner every night, minute rice (with taco seasoning for extra flavor/salt) and bean dip from the tin you find in the chip aisle pretty much anywhere (even gas stations) and I love me some Fritos for crunch and flavor, my fave is the chili cheese kind. I've never gotten my act together enough to ship resupplies to myself consistently, but it still works out to be pretty cheap, filling and tasty as hell (albeit *slightly* heavier since my bean dip comes hydrated). You got this, Jupiter! May good fortune come your way. ... Hey I'm curious how you carry your olive oil? I use what is essentially a miniature platypus bottle that I found in the travel section of the local megamart. K, thanks again for sharing your stuff!
I buy olive oil in bulk, and then buy a 6 pack of tiny (I think 8oz) apple juice bottles for kids. Drink the juice, clean the bottles, and then repackage the olive oil in those bottles. They have never leaked on me which is nice, and they're small enough where I don't feel like I'm carrying too much for any given stretch of trail.
@@JupiterHikes oh yeah, leakage would definitely not be good. 🤔 I'll have to keep an eye on that! Thanks for the reply! I love that you take the time to answer people's questions. Oh, and I got some of the beans to try out!
I liked the nature valley fig bars, too. , Justin's nutbutters are great. I've found that I needed something like a sandwich to fill up so I found english muffins smooth well and are pretty light. ... with Justin's filled me up. A meal I made to fill me up was I got bunch of mixed dried organic mushrooms from Costco and blended them, then had, freeze-dried white onions, garlic powder, salt, nutritional yeast, textured soy protein. I also ordered cashew milk powder from znatural foods to make it creamy... (this is also a nice creamer for coffee or tea) This was added to noodles, couscous.... sometimes dill or cumin, etc to change it up a little. I also had flaked beans and made various meals with those. Pre making bags of nut varieties and cranberries or raisins are really satisfying. It's best to chew them to a paste to extract all the nutrients. I often will start with apples cucumbers and will eat those on the first day or so to offset carrying water. Actually really hydrating.
Would like to see ya do the Allegheny Trail next year. Last spring I did a 98 mile section of it and planning on doing another chunk of it this year. It's awesome. I loved you food ideas. I have to eat gluten free and just about everything you had fit.
Hey Jupiter, thanks for all your videos and sharing your experiences with us. I was hoping you could do a video on cold soaking. My interest is in figuring out what you take, how do you make sure it makes nutritional sense and meets caloric density needs, how you minimize packaging waste, how long it takes to soak, and any other insights you could offer. Thank you.
I just finished the AZT last month and sent myself 4 boxes with food I have always eaten and enjoyed. By the second box, I tossed them in the hiker boxes with the exception of my dinners. I ended up buying all of my resupply food because I just didn't want to eat a single thing I shipped. I think on future thru hikes, I will only ship dinners because I have eaten them for years and always enjoy them. Interestingly enough, they are beans, rice salsa and chicken which I cook and dehydrate at home.
I haven't but will often just drink some at the end of the day. I have on the other hand in the past added like extra micro nutrient supplements to them. I don't do that anymore though
Oops you right! Guess I meant from mt laguna to warner springs, which is 70. Small mixup but at least my food will remain the same. My plan is to buy a bit extra in mt laguna, skip julian, get a bit more extra in warner springs, and then first real resupply is idyllwild.

This looks 100% vegan and almost what I would pack. My only concern is your lack of micronutrients, I suggest tossing in some nutritional yeast into your rice packets (flavor, B12, iron, etc) and iodized salt (or occasionally eat some dry seaweed snacks). Sure you could take a multi-vitamin but that tangy yeasty flavor works so well with rice dishes. I was thinking of doing cajun rice packets like jambalaya and I'm probably going to use your idea of refried beans as a test run. Thanks and good luck on the trail!

I know in the past you’ve said you would prefer to do SOBO, but if you are going NOBO, I’m in San Diego and am happy to get you around town and to the terminus in Campo. LMK young man. BTW, another excellent video
Yep! I like to hike quicker so by choosing a late start date I can hike snow free, I can carry less insulating gear as it's warmer, and overall I can go as I please. I likely won't need micro spikes, ice axe, or a lot of the bulky warm gear most hikers carry. It's definitely a trade off, but this is typically what I've done on other trails for the similar reasons. (I started the Arizona Trail later than most last year, as an example)
Youdont have to eat raw rice ! Just cook it and then dehydrate it ! It will be the same size ! You can soak it when meal time come ! That was how we reserved rice back home , in VNam during the war
I have taken vitamins on some hikes, just forgot to pack some on this one. Haven't personally noticed a difference, but I'm also not being tested in a lab or anything which would be cool
Still amazing anybody eats that much in one day. To eat that many bars each day, you’d need to be chewing non-stop! Eve need after hiker-hunger sets in, I max out at about 3 per day. Hey, what ever works!
If I see one to purchase when picking up my box in town I'll grab one and just store it on the outside of my pack and eat it that night with dinner or the next night
Also, I just wanted to mention that most of Nuun is the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to make your drink fizzy (talk about luxury). They are what 6 grams each plus the container? IMHO, I personally don’t think they are worth it unless you’re looking for that effervescent experience. Can do flavor drops like Mio to cover up funky water. What I would recommend is 1/4 tsp of good sea or Himalayan salt, 1 pack / 2 tabs of Medi-Lyte electrolyte replenisher (cheap on Amazon) for the calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and possibly some honey for the carbs (30-60 grams per hour when pushing). I’m bringing straight up salt and a honey bear. 🧂 🍯
I will be flying into the US and buy this kind of hiking food in a physical store. Any recommendation of stores that will sell this? (I will be in San Francisco and then Ashland - I can only hike OR/WA this year). Really appreciate any suggestions
In san Francisco I'm sure you could find a 'whole foods' and then ashland has a great grocery store that I forget the name of, but it's healthier options and they have a huge bulk section!
Cold soak, and it doesn't take long. I think about 10 minutes. Either way I add water and then it 'cooks' while I walk, so I'm not exactly timing it. Just getting some bonus miles in the mean time.
Who taught you this method? I’ll keep watching in case you say it in this or one of your other videos. I am older than you but I’m learning from you. Thank you. Just curious who taught you this method
which method do you refer to? A lot of the things I do are adapted from hikers that have inspired me over the years, swami, dirtmonger, ray jardine, scott williamson.... so it could be any one of those people
It's dehydrated! I linked the specific beans I bought in the video description. I used to dehydrate things myself but it was quite a bit more work so I just started buying in bulk instead
Hey Jupiter! I see you don’t have a box for Snoqualmie Pass, resupply is pretty tricky there. Are you planning on skipping it and going 170 miles from White Pass or Stevens Pass? I’ll be going SOBO in late June, I’ll probably see you in Washington or Oregon! Love the videos man.
You'll probably want a package there, but I have been there before and unless somethings changed there is a gas station and convenience store. Not a great resupply but I'm ok with that. Hope to see you out there!
Gonna second the SkurkaBean recipe for anyone wondering. I was buying Backpacker's Pantry for a while and it wasn't even the cost that made me switch, it was indigestion. I had a couple nights after eating Backpacker's Pantry where I would wake up at like 2am with a stomach ache. The SkurkaBeans are notorious for making people gassy but my body can at least break it down unlike some of the $8 stomach bombs I used to eat.
I love the video and really appreciate you taking the time to break down your meals. I had the idea to just crush up dried lentils and try that in place of the refried but I'm finding conflicting info. I don't believe it is safe to eat cold soaked raw dried beans. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. thanks
The food looks good! Are you driving your van or flying? The logistics of driving, storing the vehicle then flying back to get it seem difficult. That would make a useful video.
Hey Jupiter, how much does your starting food weigh in at? I just finished 4 day section hike on the MTS trail along the blue ridge parkway. Overall around 65 miles. So I would love to compare your food weight with what I brought.

I try and eat once every hour or two! Keeps the energy up in hopes of preventing a bonk
Do you add olive oil in your bag at home or you add it when ready to rehydrate? Thanks for sharing journey..
Curious about the avocado, how do you carry it?
If I see one to purchase when picking up my box in town I'll grab one and just store it on the outside of my pack and eat it that night with dinner or the next night
@@JupiterHikes Hope you get to have plenty avocados on your thru hike!
Do you mix fretos into beans or eat seperate?
Do you cold soak the bean/rice mix? How long?
Cold soak, and it doesn't take long. I think about 10 minutes. Either way I add water and then it 'cooks' while I walk, so I'm not exactly timing it. Just getting some bonus miles in the mean time.
@@JupiterHikes excellent thank you!
Who taught you this method? I’ll keep watching in case you say it in this or one of your other videos. I am older than you but I’m learning from you. Thank you. Just curious who taught you this method
which method do you refer to? A lot of the things I do are adapted from hikers that have inspired me over the years, swami, dirtmonger, ray jardine, scott williamson.... so it could be any one of those people
@@JupiterHikes I was referring to the beans and rice cold cook method. You answered my question. I think I’m going to give it a shot.
sick dude! i may see you out there. i start 5/16
Hi! Is your rice and beans freeze dried or dehydrated?
Before skurka it was quite the popular meal among hikers like scott williamson! Andrew was the one to make it mainstream though
@@JupiterHikes The more you know! Thank you for this lesson in Hiker Lore :)
Are beans dehydrated already?
Do you ever eat/crave your rice and bean dinner outside of your hiking? In everyday life?
Yes, I like to know that starting weight also.
Enjoy bro
