Flash Official Unlocked Firmware on S21 Ultra

  • Just got my S21 Ultra on launch day, time to flash official unlocked firmware from Samsung to remove all of the preloaded carrier bloat!
    Use XAC for Canada, and XAA for US now. Ignore SJR, it now installs bloat when you set it up with a SIM card already installed.
    Samsung USB Driver for Windows, Odin 3.14.1 3b, and Firmware Download Tool: (Frija) can be found in the archive.

      SJR is the old unlocked for Canada on W, XAA is unlocked for US using U1, thats why they said to use XAA and not SJR because SJR doesnt exist for U1, only W. But now Canada now uses XAC for W.
      So, TL;DR, use U1 XAA for US, or W XAC for Canada.

      I'm actually running U1 XAA on my W S21u because Canada gets super slow updates. Only issue is that Canadian 5G doesn't work on U1, Bixby alarm only reads Fahrenheit, no way to change it in any settings to Celsius, and Samsung Pay requires a Zipcode but we use Postal Codes in the frozen north.
      There's a workaround for that last one but it still has its limitations using U1 in Canada so W XAC is preferred for the majority as you lose 5G and the metric system with Bixby lol

    I was able to successfully flash my Carrier Unlocked S21 Ultra from Verizon from U to U1. I went straight from 13 to 14, no issues whatsoever.
    Although I got my ROM from Samfw because Frija didn't recognise my device.

    I flashed unlocked firmware with tmobile csc on my S21 Ultra and it still boots up with Vzw/Vzw/Vzw, it refuses to let me off of Verizon carrier settings, other carrier sims work in the phone and get service but I can't get their settings so I don't get the proper frequency bands for those networks
    Do I need to flash XAA csc?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try flashing XAA for SM-G998U1 without a SIM card installed, set it up without a SIM card, and then install your SIM after. It might be reading the CSC off of the SIM and forcefully setting it during setup.

    • @xlawrence1124x

      @@frozennorthproductions even that didn't work. No Sim, flashed U1 with XAA and it shows in service provider version vzw/vzw/vzw and even says vzw a 4th time in the line above next to G998U1-OYM

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try changing your APN settings to match a different carrier with a different SIM card. Like if you toss in an AT&T SIM, if it still says Verizon, try changing your APN settings to AT&T APN, reboot, and it should switch.
      There's another way to change the CSC using a phone code followed by your IMEI, I can't remember how to do it, I'll have to look it up.

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to open the phone app, and dial *#272*YOUR-IMEI-NUMBER# and from the window that pops up, you can manually change your CSC to whatever the firmware supports.
      Just to be sure though, you're flashing the entire XAA U1 firmware right? Like all files? BL AP CP CSC (not Home CSC) and then setting the phone up like new right? Cause if you're not flashing all files, and if you're using Home CSC, it's not going to remove the Verizon settings. It needs to be a full wipe cause you're converting the firmware. Once you're on the working unlocked XAA U1 firmware, you can use Home CSC for updates so you don't have to wipe everything but OTAs also work so you really never NEED Home CSC

    • @xlawrence1124x
      @xlawrence1124x 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@frozennorthproductions 272 code doesn't work, Verizon blocks it. Also yes, I'm doing all files, with the normal csc file not home, the csc is literally locked to Verizon. But the phone isn't locked and gets service on other sim cards, just with vzw csc stuck to it

      Correct, this will only provide the unlocked firmware from a factory unlocked device without all of the carrier bloat apps, it will still be SIM locked by the carrier until it's paid off and then you can request the SIM unlock if you wish to go to another carrier.

      @@frozennorthproductions I'd appreciate your advice. I followed the guide exactly and used the latest 7/1/2023 U1 XAA firmware for my SM-S908U S22 Ultra. Before doing this, the firmware was TMB/TMK (Metro by T-Mobile) which was correct because my phone was originally from T-Mobile. After flashing the XAA firmware and restoring my backup, my phone is stuck on: TMK/TMK, TMK/XAU.
      I don't understand what I did wrong. I thought my phone should be all XAA now. I used the right firmware and patched Odin. I didn't flash with a SIM card in. If you flash the XAA version for that phone you will receive updates directly from Samsung, however it is no longer debloated from factory. Since OneUI 4.1, Samsung made it so when you insert a SIM, it will preinstall the carrier bloat, so your CSC will change to whatever SIM you're using. But, updates will still come directly from Samsung over the air like normal.

      FRP locks are illegal to remove and you need to contact someone who is able to do it with a tool used to remove FRP locks. Flashing new firmware will not remove an FRP lock because the lock is assigned to the phones serial number and has nothing to do with the firmware.
      You also need to make sure it's the right hardware, if you're using an exynos model phone and flashing snapdragon firmware, it's going to fail every time, same goes if it's vise versa

    Hi Ben, I tried to flash from G998U to G998U1 using the latest XAA firmware (G998U1UES5CVCB). It went through, but after rebooting, it's complaining illegal to update the firmware. The software version changed from ..._VZW/VZW/VZW (One UI 3.1) to VZW/VZW,VZW/VZW (One UI 4.1). But the good things are 1) bloat wares are gone; 2) U did get changed to U1; 3) phone still works. Since the CSC didn't really got changed, could the bloat wares come back the next time it updates through OTA? thanks

      Did you use CSC or HOME_CSC? Cause doing from 3.1 to 4.1 using HOME_CSC would likely cause this as it's trying to restore 3.1 data on 4.1 which is impossible. But as long as it's working, you're good. Bloat doesn't get installed from OTA but if any Samsung update bloat. So like, Samsung apps can be bundled in the firmware updates, so you might get Samsung bloat but there's no way to avoid that. However, you could use ADB to remove them and it won't come back after updates cause the phone will already know it has it, it's just uninstalled for the user account and won't force the install again.

    • @musashihitachi7855

      @@frozennorthproductions Thanks a lot for the reply. The purpose of this was to 1) remove the Verizon bloat; 2) change CSC so I could use this phone in case I travel to Asia. So I did choose CSC, not HOME_CSC, to flash. What I guessed was that the version 5 firmware has blocked what your tried to do. If I flashed newer 3 or even older 4 firmware (in stead of the latest 5) and converted the CSC first, then either flash to the latest or let the OTA to take care of it, then the result could be different. But now I am on 5 and can't go back to earlier version. Do you have any new idea to change CSC if you're in my shoes? I watched your newer video "stop Samsung update", I hope your problem has automatically been resolved with the latest firmware.

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Android ROMs don't work like that, you would need an AOSP ROM for an S21 Snapdragon and an unlocked bootloader before you can make that work. So, the most vanilla Android ROM would ve LinageOS but because these phones have a locked bootloader, they don't make an official version. You would have to use the paid service by a developer on XDA, and then flash TWRP through ADB, and then using TWRP you can flash the unofficial Linage OS. Which WILL have tons of issues, won't have the same image processing for the cameras, and possibly be locked down to 60Hz unless there is an open source driver that supports these displays.
      Running an AOSP ROM on any Samsung is hit or miss, because Samsung uses proprietary drivers for all of the hardware, so you would be better off running stock debloated, or SamPWN, which is a ROM created by the same dev that offers the unlock service on XDA

      I'm really not too sure, it's hard to pin point without diagnostics. Best I could say is just try it at a friend's place and see if it still disconnects. If it works fine somewhere else. It's your router. If it still drops connection, something is wrong with the phone, or possibly just a bad update. Which you would just need to install the latest firmware, factory reset, and don't restore a backup so all wifi settings are untouched and see if it's fixed.

      Canadian 5G uses Sub-6 and US 5G uses mmWave. A Canadian S21 Ultra physically doesn't have the mmWave antennas. Like, inside the phone, there's an empty space where they should be.
      So, U1 phone will have 5G in US and Canada with Canadian or US carriers. But a W phone only has 5G in Canada with Canadian carriers.
      Unfortunately changing the firmware won't make mmWave antennas magically grow inside your phone. I was pissed when I discovered this while changing the back of my phone to fix a cracked camera lens.

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They did, U variants get updates from the carrier, U1 get updates from Samsung. And W do both. If a W varient CSC is XAC, you will get the updates from Samaung. If the CSC is anything else, it comes from the carrier.
      But all of them auto switch now as soon as you put a SIM card in.
      For me, I'm running a W variant with XAC CSC on Bell. So the firmware in settings cha ges to BMC, but the updates still directly from Samaung because it's BMC on XAC firmware. It's kind of confusing but basically you only want two firmwares. Either U1 XAA for US, or W XAC for Canada. You also need to use Patched Odin to flash it because it changes the default model firmware and official Odin will fail to flash
      EDIT:
      The difference between W and U1 is that W does not use mmWave 5G, only Sub6 cause Canada doesn't have mmWave. And Bixby is metric. So Bixby will read weather in Celsius, Bixby alarm reads in Celsius, and Samsung Pay can recognize Canadian Debit Visa's.
      U1 has mmWave, and Bixby is Imperial. Canadian credit cards still work on Samaung Pay with U1 but not Canadian Debit Visa cards.

    Any luck on converting an unlocked T-Mobile Note 20 Ultra from a carrier to a Samsung Unlocked firmware? Been wanting to try this for a long time now. Also, the phone in question is completely paid off and is able to use any carrier.

    I have a 998U on T mobile, UICC unlocked, please advise if I flash the 998U1 XAA on it, will it remain UICC unlocked?

      Yes, UICC unlock is paired to the drive, firmware changes are fine, it's essentially just a software update.

      Yes, but you have to flash a Google Play specific firmware for the right model phone (snapdragon or exynos)
