This album sounds like how Billy initially described Adore sounding before it came out. An album that was “pre-Gish.” Sort of goth/new-wave with (at the time) a drum machine. And Jimmy even kind of drums like a drum machine on this album. So awesome.

This album was desperately needed in a time when there is so much recycled trash. Crazy to think this man is still capable of a Mona Lisa after all these years. I haven’t even had enough time to digest every song yet and it’s already the best album of the year if not the decade to me. One thing about him is you can listen to the album from front to back. Not many artists can consistently do that. Especially when we have a generation of so many followers where thinking outside the box is continuously being suppressed by this so called cancel culture.

I would love the chance to sit and chat with wpc, growing up in Chicago at the same time it would be quite nostalgic comparing notes on our hometown hangouts. The guy is a special kind of genius. I just have a ton of respect for the guy.

I’ve been a fan for a long time, and this work is so fresh sounding. I’m pretty sure if I wasn’t already a fan of the band, this album would have DEFINITELY made me a HUUUGE fan. That’s big praise.

What a great open and relaxed interview. I played the Mellon Collie album to death and still do. The new music and Cyr album will become the 21st Century Mellon Collie. I love the new sound. Now if only Billy gets Jimmy to record his style on the Adore album and we could claim another original SP line up. Jimmy’s drumming is crucial to the SP sound in my opinion.

Corgan is one of the best Songwriters of our time and few are as prolific. Though the Cyr album is hard to digest all at once due to it's length and lack of varying tempos, after living with the album for awhile I'm struck by how beautiful 95% of these songs actually are. The melodies, the arrangements, the harmonies are sublime and each of these songs contain the rare type of artistry that is missing in most of today's music.

  • @TheWonderfulBlake

The past few pumpkins albums have felt more like Billy writing a bunch of songs that don’t have much to do with each other, just a group of unrelated songs, and that’s not bad. But this new album really feels like a whole album, kinda conceptual. It all fits together well. Probably their best work since Oceania.

I think he’s being too modest, Smashing Pumpkins still had the Magic songs recently with songs like Knights of Malta, Silvery Sometimes and Solara, a breathe of fresh air in the last half 2018. Looking forward to immersing myself in CYR. Loving this period of creativity by Billy/William and the Band. I also thought Contillions had a great country/folk feel.

Since about 2010 especially after Jimmy left again, Jeff became a muse to Billy. Jeff is such a creative force on Oceania, which is known as the best output from the bands since Machina. If you don't think Jeff had a heavy hand in the creation of that album is insane. Its almost perfect. Just missing Jimmy.
And James is his own man. He would never allow himself to be a showpiece and that's all. It's Billy's band, but without the rest of of the core. Its just BC solo. Which you can tell it's not.

Billy's voice only sounds good among loud, bombastic guitar riffs and huge drums. He was never a great singer but his voice sat well within that space. Now, his voice sits out in front and it doesn't sound good. I first noticed this on 'Oceana'. Yes, there were quiet songs on earlier albums but it worked. It doesn't work now. And the way he talks about fans in every interview is a joke. FFS the solo from 'Zero' alone is better than this!

The band is lost musically at this point but they keep striving for something, which is good. If only Billy was hemmed in or constrained by a good producer or the band being more critical internally while also Billy having some sort of mental clarity or sincere desire or whatever in order to help him get over the blockages that stop the band from making high-quality music.
