One of the most underrated Super Bowls of all-time. Also one of the most disastrous. Aside from the fact that there were only 4,000 parking spots for over 103,000 people since 15,000 spots were flooded due to rain, you had a giant ticket fiasco where tons of people (including Terry Bradshaw) had their tickets stolen from them, and the NFL tried to make it up to them by giving them tickets that did not exist, leading to tons of fights in the stands. Absolutely crazy. Kind of shocked the Rose Bowl got three more Super Bowls after that

One of the underrated Super Bowl games. The final score is deceptive to how competitive this game was. In many ways, this was a better game than the Cowboys/Steelers rematch the year before that is so celebrated, but was pretty much a fait accompli midway through the 4th quarter.

    • @lucashenderson2775
      @lucashenderson2775 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yup. The final score in the Steelers-Cowboys SB the year before was closer but it took a furious Cowboys rally attempt in the last few minutes to produce that result. The Rams LED going into the 4th of this one.

Well you may be right, but SB 13 will always be more remembered due to the game featuring a combined 18 HOF's, not including the 2 all-time Head Coaches and organization personnel. To this day, the most star studded super bowl EVER. The only other SB that even comes close is the 90's Cowboys/Bills super bowls and the Tom Brady/Legion Of Boom/Malcom Butler INT super bowl.

The end of an era in multiple ways. The last vestiges of the dynastic Steelers run and you can see it as they needed more than most expected to hold off the feisty Rams. The last Super Bowl covered by the underrated team of Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier, whose coverage of the game even seemed to fit the 70's more than it would the 80's. Also the only time the 70's Rams would break through and reach this big game, never getting back in Los Angeles prior to moving and coming back.

@Fries no, he actually did the NFC title game with Summerall the next year in Philadelphia. But that was their last game together. The CBS brass thought Pat would be a good fit with some ex coach named John Madden. I heard it worked out ok. Brookshier worked until at least 1984 with CBS doing NFL games. I remember he got in trouble insulting the intelligence of the Louisville basketball team in 1983 and was suspended.

The Rams had better teams earlier in the decade but the conference was much worse in 79.
They lost to Dallas and Minnesota consistently in those years, but in 79, Dallas was missing a few defenders and Roger Staubach was in his final season, and Minnesota was starting a rookie Tommy Kramer, and Jim Marshall in his final season was the only player from the Purple People Eaters left.
And the best teams of the early 80’s were still a year or two away.

LA Rams in their home market, just like this year. The Rams didn’t play their regular season games at the Rose Bowl though, it was a special host for the Super Bowl, the Rams played at the Coliseum and later at the Big A in Anaheim.
There was one other home market Super Bowl prior to last year, the 1984 matchup between Marino’s Dolphins and Montana’s 49ers which was played not at rickety Candlestick but instead at a special one-time host site, Stanford Stadium.
It’s kind of wild that the only two times a team made a Super Bowl in their home market prior to last year, both times it was a special site just for the Super Bowl and not at the team’s home stadium.
The Bucs then finally got to play in their actual home stadium, as will the LA Rams this year

Even though the rams lost the Super Bowl that year Wendell Tyler might be the most underrated player of all time he was a thousand yard rusher in 3 of his 10 seasons and in the 1984 season he had more yards from scrimmage than Roger Craig it’s actually insane he made big plays in that game and it’s wild how he isn’t recognized for how good he was back then if he wasn’t on that team the rams could’ve never even made the Super Bowl so he plays a big part in that game overall he should be recognized more for how good he was

Don't know why the NFL with NFL films don't have a online site where fans can rewatch full classic NFL games. They had a pay service that you could watch any game going back 3 seasons, but why not seasons from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. There's a huge market for these games.

It will be a very special win for each team and I think the Rams can do it. I want to the Bengals to win it. The Rams were notorious choke artists during the 1970’s, losing every year in the playoffs to either the Minnesota Vikings or the Dallas Cowboys in which their superb defense would keep them in most games only to see their offenses give away most of those games. This happened to be a freak year that the Rams actually got to the Super Bowl, but unfortunately they collapsed.

    • @pp3k3jamail
      @pp3k3jamail 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think they were choke artists they just ran into better teams. when they played the Packers in the '60s the Packers were just better when they played the Cowboys and Vikings and NFC title games those teams were just better the. Steelers were just better the 85 Bears in the NFC championship game was just better the 89.49ers in NFC championship game was just better.

    • @michaell874

@@pp3k3jamail In the 1970’s they had a great defense and that OL was tremendous. They always had good DBs and WRs, but never had a good QB. Harris, Jaworski, Haden, and Ferragamo. Also, they did not have a good RB until maybe Wendel Tyler. In the 1980’s they had that great OL, Dickerson and Jim Everett at QB, but that defense was not that good. Even the Super Bowl they did get to in SB XIV, they blew a second half lead against the Steelers in a game they could have won. They were missing a real good QB and a power back that could have worn down that defense when they had the lead.

The 'underdog' Rams gave the mighty Steelers a real dawg fight in this one; people often see the final score & would assume the Steelers were the superior team on the field all the way through. Well, it was only in the 4th quarter where the Steelers' championship meddle finally showed up at precisely the right time. But for most of the game it was a 'sling fest' as the Rams went toe-to-toe with the heavily favored Steelers & even took the lead during the game. Ultimately the Steelers were able to win and essentially close the book on their dynasty as this was pretty much the 'last hurrah' for the famed Steel Curtain. They mostly wanted to end their run on a winning note of course. And they most certainly did just that.

An overlooked aspect of the Steelers dynasty was their ability to win the close games. In 1974 and 1975 they squeaked by the Raiders in the AFC championship game and SB 10, 13 and 14 were very tight as well, yet the managed to prevail. The Steelers won 2 more Super Bowls after this: XL (2005 season) and XLIII (2008 season).
Just took awhile for the Steelers to get back to winning the Super Bowl post-Steel Curtain although they did appear in Super Bowl XXX where they lost to the Cowboys 27-17.

I watched this game live. We were all outraged at the pass-interference call against Pat Thomas. Watching it again now, it could be called either way. If it had gone for the Rams, the game may have had a different outcome.

Great game. I think SB14 was a greater accomplishment than the two Cowboy SBs were. I’m going to get in trouble for this but I think the Rams had the best defense in the NFC for most of a decade. The Cowboys front four was better but the Rams had the better LBs and secondary. What you saw John Stallworth do was against the best secondary in the NFL . Don’t let the 9-7 record fool you. The Rams had a spate of injuries throughout the year. A healthy Rams defense held Seattle to -23 yards in a shutout win earlier that year. The Rams of the 70s lacked one very critical thing, a quarterback. They didn’t have a Bradshaw or a Staubach or a Tarkenton. They were loaded at most other positions. One last thing. Jack Lambert was probably the best zone defense pass defense middle LB ever. He had 6 INTs that year. That’s insane for a middle LB. The single biggest play of the 79 season for Pittsburgh. Billy Waddy was wide open on that same play in the end zone. I’m sure Ferragamo plays this other scenario out in his mind all the time. VF had a huge 1980 season with 30 TD passes at a time when that was a special accomplishment. His career faded but he made millions in So Cal real estate so he didn’t have a half bad life.

Eh, it wasn't that close of a game. A couple things to note about personnel from this game:
    1. DE Fred Dryer parlayed his football success into the long running role as Rick Hunter on the series of the same name (Hunter) in the '80s
    2. Summerall and Brookshier were completely drunk off their asses calling this game. This was probably at the height of Summerall's struggles with alcohol addiction. Brookshier's drunkenness here pushed CBS execs to look for an eventual successor sooner than later...We all know who that turned out to be.
    3. Rams QB Vince Ferragamo a couple years later signed for the exorbitant (at that time) amount of $600,00 dollars to play for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes. The Rams had offered him $250,00. Needless to say the signing did NOT pay off as Ferragamo struggled to the point that he was demoted to backup then 3rd string by the end of the year.

I’m a life long Steelers fan and have been for over 40 years and yet here I am sticking up for the Rams…so I’m going to ask you a question or two…
How do you figure it wasn’t that close of a game?
Did you watch the entire game on January 20, 1980?
      I did.
And, I watched the entire game again, about a year ago.
Before this game got started it looked like a mismatch. The defending Super Bowl Champion Steelers, winners of 3 Super Bowls in 5 seasons, had all of the experience any team could possibly need.
At 12-4 they were dominant enough and with playoff victories of 34-14 & 27-13 vs the Dolphins & Oilers…they looked ready.
The unremarkable 9-7 Rams of 1979 were being led by a backup QB named Vince Ferragamo who somehow upset the better-talented Cowboys 21-19 (avenging a 28-0 playoff loss the previous year) and a boring as all hell 9-0 win over the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay for the NFC title.
Despite the big game being played in the Rams backyard in Pasedena….the question was not if the Steelers were going to win their 4th Super Bowl. The question was if it would be a close game. Despite the Cinderella look of the Rams, I bet many thought it would be a mostly dominant Steeler victory.
At game time the Steelers were favored by 10.5 points. The Rams didn’t get that memo until the 4th quarter.
and Steelers struggled for 3 quarters. The Rams picked off Bradshaw 3 times and were winning 19-17 going into the 4th quarter. The Steelers finally regained the lead, 24-19, thanks to a 73 yard TD pass to John Stallworth.
And even when the Rams were down 24-19, the Rams were driving deep into Steeler territory before MLB Jack Lambert caught a timely interception, which ultimately won the game for Pittsburgh. The Steelers added a late TD to clinch it 31-19 which also covered the spread, however it was a much closer game than expected.
Bradshaw & Stallworth should have been co-mvp’s in that game. But I digress.
To say it wasn’t that close is completely dismissing how well the Rams played in Super Bowl XIV, considering the ridiculous level of HOF talent they had to compete against for 4 quarters.

There were so few close games in the first 30 years of the Super Bowl that this one probably ranked as a Top 5 game through the first 30. Nowadays it's probably way down the list because there have been so many close, dramatic Super Bowls in the last 25 years.

That was NOT pass interference by Pat Thomas at 20:51. He has his head turned back towards the football and if there was any slight contact it was incidental and at the moment both were looking for the ball. Even Jim Smith the Steeler receiver didn't think it was interference. Makes me wonder how the Steelers always got the breaks in the 1970s whenever there was a controversial call. Remember the Immaculate Reception and the bogus pass interference called on Benny barnes in the previous Super Bowl against Dallas which allowed the Steelers to score in the fresh series of downs to gain the momentum in SB XIII ? I felt for the Rams in SB XIV as they played on par or even better than Pittsburgh throughout most of the game.
