Thanks your video. Tassie is spectacular, we got back from the east coast couple of weeks ago. We have already booked another couple of weeks in Tassie for the end of this year. We sailed at night, and will sail at night again. As, if you haven't got a caravan travelling during the day means you pay a nights accommodation when you arrive, and you lose a day travelling, also you are asleep for the rough part. We asked our 15yo son of he prefers the theme parks of QLD, or Tasmania, he chose Tassie. The key to Tassie is you need to take or hire a car to really enjoy Tassie. Third time for us (last time was 15years ago), but first time taking a car and going by ship. If you want to take a car but some of you get sea sick, someone told me they take the car on the ship, and the rest of the family fly across and get picked up at the airport.

Loved Tassie so much we moved here from NSW 4.5 years ago. Have been on the spirit countless times and done both day & night. Highly recommend going by night, just like you we get on have dinner go to bed, get up, get off. We always get a cabin as having your own bathroom is a whole lot nicer than sharing the public bathrooms with all the sea sick people.

Night crossings are the best. Thanks for that stopover on the way to Geelong. Was a pity we couldn’t get to meet you as we were half a lap of Tas away from you when you arrived. Hope to meet you maybe on your trek east to west of the mainland.

Look forward to following your Tassie tour and collecting some tips. As a local there’s so much we haven’t seen and keen to explore more hidden gem off grid camps. Safe travels!

Speaking as a grey nomad, I have done the crossing a few times both day and night. Perfer night crossings provided you get a cabin and don't have too many beers if it's likely to get a bit rough 😀

I did this crossing in 1989 during the airline pilots strike on the old Abel Tasman in 6 metre swells to get home on leave from the RAN. We’d been through Bass Strait in 10 metre swells less than a year before on a much smaller ship, about 2700 tons compared to something like 20,000 tons. AT had a spew trough in the heads! I remember the bar being empty apart from myself, one of my shipmates going home as well, and the barman!

Yay, Happy New Year! Love Tassie. In 1986 we moved to Tassie with a tandem trailer full of stuff and 4 kids. Luckily my late hubby was a truck driver, port Melbourne was a challenge to say the least. We came back to Vic for family reasons in 95 with an extra son lol. We even braved the devilcat when it was running. Love going by boat and going again in August! Have a great time will be watching to see what you get up to! That extra son now has a family of his own lol...no idea where all that time went 🙄😍

Been over four times with a group of mates riding motorcycles. Always night sailing. We ride down from NSW over three days, arrive at Port for night check in. Shower, a few beers and dinner. Off to bed and rocked to sleep by the swell. Wake up early in Devonport, breakfast off the boat and then ride off for the next seven days. Similar process on the way back. It works best when you are packing a lot in to a short trip.

Only arrived back from Tassie a couple of weeks ago. We took our van down and had an amazing time. Did a night crossing on the way down and day crossing on the way back. We have done this crossing a few times before and found a day crossing with a cabin booked is the best combo. The cabin is awesome for the quiet retreat it offers. If travelling with a van it is almost essential to get a cabin if doing a day crossing as most seats in public areas will be taken by the time you board.

Night travel worked well for us on the boat. When they locked the doors to the decks due to bad weather soon after leaving Devonport, we figured best to head to bed after a seasickness tablet. We slept through the rough stuff and woke up not far from Geelong making it a quick trip!

I travelled to Tasmania in 2011, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was on an 18 day 4WD tag along trip which was fabulous. It was just me and my Suzuki Vitara. I did the day crossing, which was ok, though when I do the crossing again, (which is definitely going to happen) I would do the night crossing.

We took our van over ten years ago, we had to drive up a great big ramp and turn a hairpin corner at the top, it was hard not to take out their sign with the van. Did you have to go up a ramp? It's exciting watching your videos as we will be on the ship Feb 14, you are exactly right about booking early, we were trying for a night sail but had to wait a couple of hours for friends to decide, hence after that short period all of the night sails were gone. Oh well, It will be nice to experience both, we booked recliners. See you on our travels we are there for six weeks 😊

After a motorcycle circumnavigation back in 1986 when an opportunity arose in 1994 to relocate from Melbourne to Devonport (we actually settled in Ulverstone) we jumped at the chance. Back then there were only 3 night crossing a week but after the demise of timber harvesting and paper manufacturing the state really took a turn for the worse. Then in the mid to late 90s a deliberate push to attract tourists began and (coupled with the reversal of ridiculous anti-gay laws, etc. and recognition that high powered guns do not have a place in civlian life - after the 'Port Arthur Massacre in 1996) a survey in Sydney found that residents in that city thought Tassie as "The Poor Man's New Zealand".11:25. So many things to see and do in Tassie (although the winters can be 'Challenging') do not hesitate to come down. You won't regret it (although I did meet an Italian Man who married a Queensland Lady on the Gold Coast who said that he worked on Dam Construction Tassie's West Coast when he first came to Austraya and experienced his only 'White Christmas').

We went to Tasmania in mid-Feb 2020 … right before COVID hit. What was to have been a 3-4 month trip ended up being cut short mid-Mar after all of tourists were kicked off the island. Nevertheless, it remains 2nd top of the list to go back to. When we travelled down, we went without kids so factor that in however we did a day-crossing. We booked 4 lounges (we were 2 couples) which are then allocated for our exclusive use - you can wander off and look around the boat if you wanted to. We also took up a small esky containing some drinks and nibblies which was good. We were able to sleep in the lounges (basically airplane seats that reclined a little further from memory - definitely not bed flat though) and then, when we arrived in Devonport, headed straight for the Forsyth Valley Recreation Ground too. Our trip home was different in that it was forced and, due to quarantining, we were allocated a twin single room for the day crossing. Although comfortable enough, if it weren’t for the whole COVID bit, I would have preferred the lounge again. If it were a night-crossing though, a room would definitely have its advantages - even things like being able to all leave your stuff and go to the bar or the restaurant as a group rather than someone having to stay behind to watch over your valuables. Looking forward to following your trip for next time we get there.

If you are travelling during the day get a cabin . Even if you dont all have a bed it is still worth it. Last time I travelled during the day some of us were a bit unwell in the rough seas and to be able to lie down was good. Taking travel sick tablets can make you tied too.

Did a day and night sail with 2 kids under 6 and definitely would only do night sail next time. Day is so long and the ship is very expensive for food drink and entertainment, so a day sail cost a couple of hundred dollars extra. We still needed a cabin on the day sail home as the kids still needed a day sleep.

Happy travels in Tasmania. One thing I would of loved to see was a detailed map of the last 5km into the port in Geelong. Definitely. We normally do night. Only done 1 day time sail and still get a cabin. Most people arrive after a long journey or a busy time in Melbourne and a daytime knap is always welcome.
Looking forward to your next post. You may have driven past our place when you went to Cradle.
