    We lost our daughter back in September, one week after her 49th birthday. She loved PF, went to many of their concerts, and was also a huge Grateful Dead fan. Her entire life was dominated by drug issues, and ever increasing health problems. She spent her last six years back home with my wife and me, after her fiancé died of an overdose from cocaine and fentanyl. Thankfully, she was clean and sober the entire time she lived with us. I'm dedicating ' Wish You Were here ' to Mary Ann, our youngest of only two daughters. We miss you very much honey, and hope that by some great design we will meet again in some other realm or dimension. Love, Dad and Mom

    I’ve struggled with things my whole life: death, anxiety, depression, addiction, low self-esteem, you name it. I’ve had things to cope, but nothing quite calms me down like Pink Floyd. I often feel like a lost soul swimming in a fish bowl, and it’s comforting to know I’m not alone. (Being a part of this community makes me feel that I can share side of me.) Although I’m grown now and have made it through a lot of the difficulties of my younger days, when I’m feeling down, you can bet on a Pink Floyd album being played on my stereo, or in my headphones as I lay there trying to be Comfortably Numb.

    For the record, Syd Barrett was alive when they wrote this song in 1975. He was alive when they performed this in 1994, Pulse. Syd Barrett died in 2006. The "Wish You Were Here" album was about the loss of Syd Barrett's mind and spirit, his mental breakdown that made him unrecognizable to even his closest lifelong friends. It was not about his physical loss.

    The mark of a good guitar soloist: being able to sing what you're playing.
    A lot of players just learn their scales and licks and just let their fingers go without really thinking about it.

    Many people mistakenly think this is about Syd Barrett, but in an interview Roger Waters said quite emphatically that the only song on the WYWH album that was about Syd was "Shine on you crazy diamond". He went on to say that when he wrote the lyrics to "Wish You Were Here" he had in mind someone close who had refused to move on in life and had been left behind. He also said that at other times it meant something else, and that some days he didn't really know what it meant himself. He deliberately made the lyrics enigmatic so that the listener could make them mean whatever they wanted them to mean, and they have become an anthem for anyone who has lost someone close to them. David Gilmour has said that he often thinks of Syd when he's performing it, even though it wasn't written about him.
    The opening guitar chords were composed by David Gilmour who had in mind someone listening to a poor quality radio all alone in their bedroom late at night, and upon hearing the guitar joining in himself with the crisper sound of the second guitar. Overall, a stunningly beautiful composition, both instrumentally and lyrically, and a work of complete genius. I associate it with someone very close and special that I lost long ago and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

    The album starts and finishes with Shine on you crazy diamond which is about Sid, He turned up during the recording of this but his head was completely fried and he never really functioned from 68 onwards (too much acid), Of this Roger Waters who wrote the lyrics said it's about whatever the listener wants it to be about, There is a really good series called classic albums and its basically the band talking about the recording of classic albums and both Wish you were here and DSOTM are on it. hearing thosei nvolved in the making, the band, the engineers give you a really insight. I saw them twice back in the 88 on the delicate sound of thunder tour and in 2 weeks I'm going to see Nick Masons Saucerful of Secrets (The drummer) This band changed my life. I had just turned 11 in November 79 when another brick was released and saved all my pocket money to buy the album and within a couple of weeks had 4 paper rounds so I could afford to buy more music and I haven't changed.

    Yes yes YES more Pink Floyd. My top 2 favorite songs of all time are both Floyd. “Shine on You Crazy Diamond (all 9 parts) and “Echoes live at Pompei (part 1 & 2). They are both very long (26 minutes), but don’t feel like it.
    Great reaction. Keep up the good work buddy!!!

    My mom always loathed the "ambient noise" of Floyd
    But my dad loved them
    He used to play them for me during split custody when I was young. He passed last year, and this song makes me think of him every time.
    Song gets heavy when you can relate to it

    This one will always have a place in my heart. My father was a tortured soul and died while I was dating my now husband. During the father/daughter dance me and my brother spent more time belting this song out than dancing.

    We all love Pink Floyd but we understand the sheer enormous volume of great bands for you to react to from the classic rock era. You can probably do this until you're as old as I am and not run out of material. It's why the era from the late 50's til about the mid 90's is the greatest time for music in human history (special shout out to the 70's, the absolutely greatest decade of all).

    • @paulsiebeneicher4536
      @paulsiebeneicher4536 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If i had to pick only one decade for music, it would be the 70s. 80s would be my second pick. Third would probably be 90s. Then it might be a toss up between 00s and 60s. I was born in 1970 and I don't think my opinion is so much about my age but just the quality of music pumped out in the 70s, much of which I didn't discover until during the 80s and some of which (like deeper cuts by Judas Priest and Molly Hatchet) I'm still discovering in the last 5 or so years.

    • @roadkill7314
      @roadkill7314 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @paulsiebeneicher4536 Agree but I think I'd rate the 70's, 80's, then 60's. To me 90's was good but quality fell off after the first half. Plus I'm older than you and may have had more exposure to 60's.

    • @paulsiebeneicher4536
      @paulsiebeneicher4536 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @roadkill7314 , that was a ranking I also considered. We do agree on 70s first then 80s. I did hear a lot of 60s stuff especially in my college years however I won't assume i heard as much 60s as you did. It's a tough call in a way because I can agree that the 60s were critical in laying the foundation for what came after, but a lot of what came after might resonate more with me. A couple related notes, I respect The Beatles but never got heavily into them, plus I respect Jimi Hendrix but I'm more about great songs than great performers, and I'll take a lot of post-Hendrix songs over Hendrix songs, despite his musical talent. So like I agree that artists like Beatles and Hendrix paved the way for stuff that followed, however, I prefer the stuff that followed.

      @paulsiebeneicher4536 It's all good; a minor taste difference. Now if you hadn't had 70's first we might have come to blows!
