Hi I liked your analysis. My case is a bit different'; 1. I am down to three seasons, 2 I am trying to move from tent to hammock, 3 I am motorcycle camping. 1 and 2 are somewhat related to my age 76. 3 makes weight less important, though not unimportant, size is still important.
I tried using sleeping bag with a sleeping pad in my hammock, that did not work well for me as it moved around so much that I ended throwing it out after a few hours. Fortunately it was a warm evening. This spring I plan on trying my sleeping bag with reflective insolation under it and an under quilt under the hammock.

This is why I bought the Aerie 20. I zip up the Footbox, sinch the drawcords to make it tighter and use it as an over sized top quilt, when it gets colder I can zip it all the way up to get tighter for warmth, and then finally I use it over my current sleeping bag for when it gets really cold. I love it!

Bought the Aerie 20F for the same reasons.
Use it all the time, love this item.

I bought my Aerie 20 for use as an under quilt, but my first use of it was as a 2nd bag over my REI Lumen 20 bag, i.e. a two bag system: Saddlebag Lake in the Eastern Sierras in September was surprisingly cold and windy (for me). 😳 SmartWool baselayer, wool socks, wool beanie and puffy jacket completed the sleep system inside a tent. Oh! And a reflective car sunscreen under the sleeping pad helped a smidge.😂

I'm going with just a down blanket for hiking and a wool blanket for car camping. The advantage with a blanket is you can wrap yourself up cowboy style and it eliminates drafts, slithering, and crawling things.

I’ve always used a mummy bag alone but 2 years into a relationship we’ve been using a down double top quilt and it’s fantastic. The weight comes in about the same as my single mummy down bag. It makes for a luxurious back country bed and saves a couple pounds. Would Love to see and OV version at some point. I’ve never completely trusted the lack of loft volume in our current quilt. If you like to cuddle I’d highly suggest it.

At 6'5 with a 52" chest, I am right at the upper limits of OV's larger bags. Getting fully zipped up is a chore and for me personally would only be done if it was going to be below 40-45 degrees for a long period of time through the night and base layers were an issue. Living in a southern climate I have been using a Summit 30 as a top quilt paired with an OV insulated ground pad on the ground and it works quite well. Might be interesting to see a pad strap type set up that a bag could be zipped on to as well as maybe a small 10-12" zip on insulated bag extension that could be connected to a pad strap that could not only widen the bags use as a top quilt but increase the size of the bag slightly when added on and fully cinched up. The extra couple ounces for a big guy like me would be near meaning less and could be pushed right into the stuff sack with the bag for storage.

An important option he doesn't mention is the hybrid hoodless bag that's designed to also work as a quilt. For one vendor, for example, the weight difference between a quilt and a bag is only 4.5oz for a 20f rating, and you get a zip you can close to improve performance at the limits of the bag's rating plus a bit more width so it's not too constricting when closed up. It's an increasingly popular solution for people who like quilts but prefer to seal up when temperatures drop below freezing. For the extra weight, this hybrid design gives you quite a few extra degrees of comfort because of the greater efficiency, especially if the bag also offers a neck baffle. Suppliers include Enlightened, Zpacks, Feathered Friends and Nunatak. It's a good way to enjoy the best of both worlds once temperatures drop into the 20s.

@@TaysonWhittaker Thanks for the reply, but not sure that the Aerie really qualifies in that category. It would be good if you did one though. More than one influential reviewer has adopted this style for their 3 season quilt/bag, and I think the market is growing. The gold standard seems to be the Feathered Friends Flicker - people like it a lot. You might also get some inspiration from the Nunatak 3D Quilt - a sophisticated design but a price point that would be beyond most of us... I think something like this at an accessible price might be a popular addition to your lineup.

I like both styles. I have an old FSS (Forest firefighter bag, pretty new at 21 years old! ) cold weather bag with a broken zip. I use it as a quilt, because my 16 1/2 year old cat won't sleep with me if I use blankets and quilts. Too heavy for her. So I use the old bag as a quilt in the bed. Camping I take my late Dad's 60 year old Eddie Bauer down bag. Warm for fall cabin camping. Like a big green comfy caterpillar. I'd love a real quilt but the only way I could afford one is if you had layaway for the low income, like under the poverty level people. If you had layaway, I'd buy a quilt, coat & pack!

I’ve used the ECWSS (now MSS) and found it to be better than the rated temperatures for me. That said, I’ve got a commercial waterproof, breathable bivouac bag that didn’t cost over $30 (bought it new on Amazon three years ago and don’t remember exact cost) that weighs 10 oz. I use it with the intermediate or patrol bag for weekend hikes around 30 miles or so during the winter (to be honest I use it most of the year) but temperatures in the southeastern USA seldom get below 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 degrees Celsius) even on the mountains.

I feel like it would depend in the weather and sleep system. Cold weather, 25 or lower, you want to make sure it is going to keep you warm, no matter what. Summer, just open up your sleeping bag like a quilt. Depends on the environment and time of year. Summer in SoCal vs summer in the mountains. Who knows.

Great video / comparison. But I guess you are a "still" sleeper, maybe even a back sleeper? For me, who sleep on my side and also toss and turn during the night, the choice is a no brainer. Ever since I started camping, as a wee young lad, I've hated to zip myself up in to a sleeping bag, instead I slept with the zip fully open and the "sides" tucked in around me... Then people started to make top quilts that meant to work exactly how I always used my sleeping bags. :)

@@TaysonWhittaker Well, not really a great point. You turn a mummy bag with you so that your face is exposed. BTW, I thought this video was a pretty good comparison except for the weight comparison. High-end bags like the Western Mountaineering Extremelite line, are not that much heavier: 20oz for 30degF and 30oz for 20degF.

So a quilt would be cheaper than a comparable sleeping bag, but currently the Summit Series StormLoft Bag 0F (long/wide) retails at $250 (outdoorvitals.com/collections/sleeping-bags/products/summit-series-stormloft-down-sleeping-bag), vs the StormLoft 0F Quilt (long/wide) at $255 (outdoorvitals.com/collections/underquilts/products/stormloft-0-30-f-down-topquilt). What am I missing?

    • @TaysonWhittaker
      @TaysonWhittaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Good question, the topquilt in this video is one of our first synthetic quilts. It is significantly cheaper than a similarly rated sleeping bag. We had not yet produced down quilts at the time this video was published. As you can see, a quilt and a sleeping bagwith a similar rating using down will both be close to the same cost. The advantage of a quilt then becomes mostly based on weight savings/versatility.

You mentioned that one needs a wider top quilt. That's a wash in terms of the total materials. (and thus weight, cost, ...). Also, with a wider top, there is a big chance to touch the ground and sol it or damage it. The sleeping bad will be protected over the bed.
