Thank you Dr. Imes!!! So great to take away a couple of nuggets to add to my reflections.... the Deut 5 link, it really hit me that the importance of telling the exodus story by Moses to the new generation. We often say, don't let history repeat itself, it is because of the importance of understanding history. I definitely need to practice more observance with Sabbath. Challenge accepted! :). have a wonderful week and thank you again for all you do!
Very effective analogy with the job interview, thanks for this nugget! Also resonate with the wisdom of "it's not necessarily about which day of the week you sabbath but that you actually sabbath and bask in God's goodness" -- in a similar way, Dr Heiser always said "the best bible translation is the one you will read!"
Completely agree on taking a day (any) as "Sabbath" (observance and abstinence from work) to enjoy a day with God; disconnecting ourselves from everything that is part of our routine. We cannot be dogmatic on observing the sabbath (Saturday) as the only day. What if I am a doctor working in a hospital, or a police, or fire fighter, etc. We all have different schedules; but we can observe or set apart a day (any) as a sabbath.
We were today listening to this one then waiting for the next TT re: honoring father and mother to pop up. But somehow it went straight to Billy Graham’s Time is Short sermon right after the. Sabbath. So, we got all 3 this am. And it seemed curious to go from Sabbath to time is short. Anyway, you are in fine company it seems.
I remember something bad happened in the Corinthians church with the Lord's Supper. the Christian slaves didn´t really have time to rest and they couldn´t enjoy a real celebration together... Thanks, Dr. Carmen for your help...Dios le bendiga Question: Could Paul´s letter (1 Corinthians) be seen as a Shabbat topic?
Interesting idea. I thought of the Lord's Supper problem more as an issue of class divisions. The wealthy ate before the poor could get there, which further marginalized them. The goal was for everyone to eat together as one.
Dr. Imes what does sabbath look like for you? This command amongst some others has afflicted me at times because of the internal debates that exist within the church and in my friend groups.
I take Sundays as my rest day. I don't grade papers, do class prep, write books or articles, or plan for the week. I enjoy reading for pleasure, walking to church, taking a nap, watching a show with my family, calling my parents, etc. It's such a relief to have a day without a to-do list staring me in the face!
Which day did The Lord Jesus observe Sabbath? Was it Saturday or Sunday? Since He is our perfect example and the fulfilment of the Law, and if He has not changed the Law, shouldn't we not be following His example and observe Sabbath on the day that the Lord sets aside to worship Him?
Jesus would have celebrated Sabbath on Saturday because he was Jewish. His resurrection inaugurated the new creation (at least partially), so that could justify a change in day. Sabbath was not directly connected to worship, but to rest.
I have a non sabbath related question if that's alright :) I was recently reading your article "The Rise and Fall of the Imago Dei?" and I was wondering, you said that Adam doesn't name Eve until after the fall- but doesn't he name her "woman" immediately after he after seeing her?
Good question. Some people point to Gen. 2:23 as proof that Adam names her. But woman is a general category, not her personal name. Even if we decided that it qualifies as naming (perhaps in parallel with naming the animals in 2:19), the idea of naming as a sign of authority is also uncertain. God does not give man authority over women in 1:26-28. He gives both of them authority over the animals. Even Hagar names God later in Genesis, which can hardly be a sign of authority.
@CarmenJoyImesPhD so if we grant that the mere action of naming things doesn't mean that Adam has authority over the things he's naming, what narrative purpose does it serve for God to allow Adam to name all the animals?
FYI, Luther’s Large Catechism on the Third Commandment: “no one day is better than another. Actually, worship ought to take place daily. However, because this is more than the common people can do, at least one day a week ought to be set apart for it. Because Sunday has been appointed for this purpose from ancient times [the resurrection of Jesus on the “first day of the week” Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2; Luke 24:1; Revelation 1:10], it should not be changed, so that things may be done in an orderly fashion and no one create disorder by unnecessary innovation. [biblical insertions]
How do you interpret "solemn day, holy to the Lord" or "holy sabbath of solemn rest" regarding the observance of the sabbath day? (see Exodus 31:15; 35:2; cf. Leviticus 23:3).
@charlespuskas838 think Hebrew and not 21C. Holy is set apart., sacred. This is open to interpretation and has ensured a wide variety of expression. Early church in 1C was predominantly Jewish, they still attended Shabbat on Sat and followed all those traditions but added a Sunday meal as a time for the Kehilla, the assembly of Messiah. Nothing is ever clear cut with these things. Amorphous is far more in keeping with these instructions, with very wide boundaries. It's more of a heart matter, not a rule, law, and legalistic matter, which only causes division. Paul, in Romans, clearly addresses this.
@@sharonjacob4782 Thanks! Following Hebrew "set apart" for what? Also, Leviticus 23:3 seems more pertinent here: a sacred "set apart" assembly or convocation. In the Hebrew Bible, several Jewish feasts either began or ended on the Sabbath day, or incorporated a special Sabbath-like day of rest. I'm thinking BCE, not CE,
@charlespuskas838 set apart from, not for, although the concept of faithfulness is part of the Hebrew concept of Kadosh-glory. Always to be an example/ representation of who Yahweh was and is. Festival Shabbats are always something different from ordinary Shabbat. And as Carmen said, it's rest from work which is ordered. The definition of what is work has been the origin of hundreds of added Mishnaic laws by the sages. Caused all sorts of hostile encounters between the pharisees and Jesus.
It is understood that the Creator does not get tired and therefore does not need to rest. Another thing is that those who wrote Genesis transmitted from ancestors who did not live under the Torah (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for example), connected the seventh day of the initial cessation of creation with the commandment of rest of the Hebrews (although God does not stop creating continually), until the giving of the Law the previous ancestors did not keep the Sabbath because that commandment did not exist until a certain time. Logically, they rested when they felt tired and sleepy. I do not agree with imposing the Sabbath or any other day of rest. Some rest on Saturday, others on Sunday, others on Monday, etc. The first day of the week reminds us of the resurrection of the Son of God, and it began to be celebrated as a memorial. Obviously it didn't seem right to the unbelieving Jews.
Thanks for your thoughts, Felix. The "rest" of God on the seventh day was not a nap because God was tired, but the "rest" of a king on his throne. We too need to take time to sit back and enjoy all that God has provided.
@@CarmenJoyImesPhD I believe God was painting a picture of the law and Grace. I love my sabbath day! I can get cranky if I don't get one Thank you for reminding us to always receive Yahweh's gifts to us.

It's interesting to note that the Sabbath command does not relate the day to a worship gathering or service. It's simply a day to cease from labor.
