Thank you for this reminiscence! I once had the honour to play the piano privately with Knut Hasselmann, Schumann Introduktion und Allegro. It was in 1981. Long ago and still in vivid memory.
From the photos none of them are playing the same make/model of Horn. But they have a very pure and harmonious section sound. A few strategic drop outs, and/or (I don't have a score), maybe alternate parts played? Love hearing the lower parts/harmony emphasized, supporting the lead player. Very melodic, and less percussive than some versions I've heard. Very fluid and tight on valve/note changes, as a section! One of the cleanest section performances I've ever heard. Bravo!
I’ve been a Horn player for over 50 years and have heard many attempts at this damnably hard piece of music. I’ve bookmarked this version to return to when I want to hear it played correctly. The tempi, intonation, ensemble, phrasing, subtlety, and of course, the dead on high notes are all superb. The word subtlety is not usually associated with this work, but it is appropriate in this version. Each voice speaks through and can be heard by the appreciative listener. A++ overall. AND TO BE A LIVE RADIO PERFORMANCE ON TOP OF IT ALL. Master craftsmen all. Thank you for sharing.
So wonderful to hear it played with such musicality, transparency (one can actually hear the low horns!!!), virtuosity, and elegance and not the usual non-stop blasting.
A wonder performance! In comparison to other renderings, the musicality here is flexible and graceful. The tempo is a bit quicker than others I have heard, but overall it's right up there with the best of them! And a live performance - wow! - alle Achtung!
