The problem is his form for Madrid has masked the type of player Bellingham is. Hes an absolute specimen (a proper athlete) hes not a 10 imo but actually an 8 and foden is easily the more natural 10. ITs criminal from southgate not having natural width from a left footed left back or a natural winger on the left. We constantly lost 10yards of width last night. Its so uncomfortable watching Southgate manage this England team.
it wont make any difference. gordon played lw against iceland with foden in the 10 and we couldnt create any chances then. the tactics suck. change the formation, change the players, it wont change anything if we keep playing southgates awful slow boring sofe negative pedestrian reactionary tactics. southgate is just so tactically bad. its painful.
All pundits before the game: "The attack is great, the defence is a concern" All pundits after the game: "The defence is great, the attack is a concern"
I was just about to say this, before the game “it’s the defence that’s a concern” said a Mr Gary Neville, now “it’s the midfield that’s a major concern” said a Mr Gary Neville. 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Foden is probably a 9/10 as a player. Gordon is probably a 7/10. However, when playing left wing in a 4-2-3-1, Foden is probably a 5 or 6. Really think Gordon must be on the left.
you guys need to see through the foden bullshit. He is a bang average player, im going to sound crazy but as soon as Pep leaves you will see his true colours.
Very reminiscent of the Italy game in the Wembley final. Once England scores an early goal suddenly you see England sitting much deeper, with playing conservative putting the handbrake on. Southgate has no backbone or tactical knowledge, he isn't a tactician and Mancini outwitted him
Your right when in the last euro final against Italy when England took the lead after they just sat back and invited Italy to attack them then Italy got the equalizer then they lose the game on penalties England have some excellent young players and some good experience players as well I'm not sure they gel as a team Gareth Southgate done a good job for England I'm not sure go that one step further to win a trophy for England
This problem predates Southgate tbh. 2000 against Portugal and Romania, 2002 against Brazil, 2004 against France and Portugal, 2016 against Iceland, 2018 Croatia, 2021 Italy... it seems to be part of England's DNA to pull back after an early lead, without learning their lessons.
The team was, perfect very good possession for 35 minutes and we should have been 3 or 4 goals up by then. Reason after 5 minutes Saka should have got some cross in, and then maybe some shot on target. Then we scored and should have done the same get crosses in and the goals would come, but we did none of that. Also we had no one in the left to get left footed crosses in. This is what Germany would have done and we should have won 5-0. Also after we scored we started doing fancy flicks, then we started hoofing the ball forward which Pickford did also, instead of keeping to possession football. Then we started battling with the Serb they were all big guys so the wrong move. Then Bellingham did a crazy run forward and could have got himself injured running into a Serb who got booked for it. Nothing wrong with the team except left footed forward, the problem was the tactics and not direct enough in the first 35 minutes.
Is your second name bandwagon Simon?? Jesus… more problems than just the manager (who has been the most successful for a long time) and I’d prefer him compared to Roy / Big Sam.. some of you forget where we have come from. Before we weren’t expected to do anything, he came in, team spirit improved massively, started getting better results, including being first manager to beat Spain away in god knows how long, first manager to beat Italy away (&home) in god knows how long. Beats Germany in euros (something we rarely do in tournaments).. it ain’t all bad. Enjoy the ride, get behind the team instead of moaning about the bloody manager for once.
@@christophers4415 Bandwagon? After that stupid comment, I'm not going to bother reading the rest of it. I've doubted the manager tactically since he let Croatia rip us apart on the wings in the Semi Final. Then when he let Italy suffocate us. We lost both of those games because of the manager.
@@simonb1996 yes, bandwagon. Like most of the drones in comments. You mean, you did read it, realised it was the truth & didn’t have anything else to say to suit your agenda.
What about tents inability to actually play midfield nearly cost us a goal where he was incapable of controlling the ball his lack of tactical, positional awareness and ball watching .
None of you watch The Overlap and it shows. You keep parroting the same things but Gary said that midfield was a concern on The Overlap before the tournament started. This isn’t some 180 or inconsistency on his part.
Grealish better than foden at LM , so this selection all makes sense! 🤣😂.. Play a 3-5-2 if a problem with foden up with Kane.. Or just keep same formation but play Gordon and play Bellingham, foden and rice together..
How about just not play Bellingham. He ain’t as good as people are saying. If you want a midfielder to crash the box then yes he’s your guy. If you want a midfielder to control the game he’s not that guy. Good character not a great footballer.
What I don’t get with Southgate is that everyone and their mum saw Serbia pushing their wing backs high and the CB in the middle of the park because of England lack of pace . Yet players like Foden and Kane who don’t have any stayed on instead of bringing on players like Gordon and Watkins who would have pushed Serbia defence back into their half and take pressure of England .
It is quite obvious isn't it. He seems to want to hold off and not change games, take it my scruff of neck. He doesn't even get out the dug out much. Foden was the worst player and not working yet stayed on.
Yes he doesn't have the bravery or tactical acumen to know what to change. It's frustrating to watch as England have so many options and formations they could change to A top manager would be able to switch things up throughout the game
Foden keeps cutting inside and clogging the middle of the pitch leaving trippier on his own if we just start Gordon you have a player who can link with trippier, runs a lot more than foden and is a lot more of a winger not centre attacking it helps us out with width & helps us out defending and also is there for the long ball unlike foden I don’t understand how Southgate kept him on shocking
A this waaas the issue😂😂 Not TAA in the double pivot e😂 Come on man,TAA and joao cancello unfortunately can't play football. They aren't good defenders, they make good passes though BUT they lack something to play in the middle field
Didi Hamann called it correctly on RTE I think. Foden and Bellingham are both number 10s, and as good as Foden is, you would put him below Bellingham in the pecking order for that position, and Foden isn't very good on the wing. Southgate should bite the bullet and drop Foden to the bench and play someone who can play in that position, like Gorden, but Southgate is probably too timid to do it (which might not be true).
@@KevinSheedy10 On England shirt, to be honest Bellingham is miles above Foden. Last night Man of the match award was the 5th award Bellingham won on England shirt while Foden has yet won any MOTM award. Don't forget Bellingham is just 20 while Foden is 24.
Kane works best working as a pivot, dropping in, spraying passes about, creating space. He can't do that with Foden and bellingham in there as well and no one running in behind bar Saka. Even more so when we have no full back threat on the left. I think the issue is Foden has just had a great season for City basically playing as a no.10 and so has Bellingham doing basically the same thing but he probably provides more burst into the box threat than Foden (as his goal proved last night). The issue is you either drop probably Foden, or you play them both as like tucked no.10s like Germany are doing with Musiala and Wirtz, but then you drop Saka who is also in good form and really good. Foden has excelled with a striker in Haaland who stays up front and is a massive threat off the last man, Kane isn't that striker, again look at his Bayern season he plays that no.9/no.10 hybrid role with Sane and Musiala bombing past him, in the past we have done that with England with Sterling and Rashford bursting past him, I think sadly when you look at the equation, to get the best out of Kane, with the best out of Bellingham, it is Foden who loses out and you probably need the pace of Gordon in there with Gordon, Bellingham and Saka bursting past Kane. Probably with a double pivot of Mainoo and Rice, and you then add the physicality and energy of Rice adding more late runs to overload teams.
@@PeakyBlinder1917 You can't get service when you're not in the right areas. The guy looked completely lacking in energy and was rarely where he needed to be. Especially in the second half when England needed an out ball.

@@dlldll from what you've seen yes, but I've seen prior to this.... Also in that time alongside Rice & Bellingham no other midfield has looked better alongside them.
@@leonporter2625the real answer is to put Bellingham alongside Rice. Would mean England have the best midfield in the tournament then you can actually play Foden in his correct position. It's a tough call but would solve two of Englands big problems in one.
The problem is how static players are off the ball. Painfully slow build up consisting of backwards and sideways passing for atleast 5 mins . You could have a team of the worlds best players but playing at the speed england do with the lack of movement off the ball would end up with the same result
I agree with you 100%. When these players play for their clubs this doesn't happen.... only under Southgate does it happen. Southgate is a VERY boring man and he exudes this tedious and vanilla boredom onto his players. In this game, as well as the Iceland friendly these teams packed the middle of the pitch, yet we only tried to go down one side - the right. With hardly any creativity we ended up, as you say, passing the ball sideways and backwards with zero verve or zest. Kane needn't have bothered showing up yeaterday.
Play Wharton at the base of the midfield. He will always play passes forward and will not give the ball away. I’ve watched him for years in the Blackburn academy. Trust me, he is what we need to assert more control over teams and play further up the pitch
@@MrDoctorproctor I would play the following in a 433 - Henderson (pickford gives ball away too much) Walker Stones Guehi Shaw Wharton Rice Bellingham Saka Kane Foden

@@banditbaker1675 "more than a 6?" clueless from him. How many 6's can you buy on the market that are better than Rice and how many 8's can you buy that are better than Rice? The answer is there are lots of 8's available for Arsenal to buy that are better than him there and none at 6. When he plays 8 he spends alot of the time not involved in the game but popping up with a goal or an assist as hes a good striker of the ball. Hes mentioned it previously that he thinks Rice is weak as a 6. Mind boggling analysis. His confidence fools casuals like yourself into thinking he knows what hes talking about.
Could not agree more. Bring a fresh striker on, when you are actually winning a game, not when we are bloody chasing a game. If he relies on Kane solely in this tournament, we cannot succeed, it’s that simple. Captain Kane, is nowhere near as sharp as he was, for quite sometime now, at this level. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@Malvo512Think he needs a small rest and if we can swap him after 50/60 mins. Then why not. It's why we have a squad. Harry Kane form is great, his energy levels maybe a bit low.
Neville says that England might need 3 games to get familiar with playing with each other. Why did this not happen in the year leading up to the world cup. Southgate should have been playing his best lineup for a while now. Not putting TAA in midfield at the last minute and hoping it works out.
I know. It’s crazy. How are we still experimenting at this stage? All this shouldve been done in friendlies and lead up to the competition. Also how are the players looking so unfit? If we can’t do well with this group of players then Southgate needs to go.
First half Bellingham was everywhere, Saka was electric causing mayhem, Guehi won every duel, Rice was mopping up all over through Trents incapabilities, but the attacking players didn't do nothing in the 2nd half. Foden & Kane may as well not of been on the pitch. Gordon for Foden against Denmark
Foden has to be LW cos he does not start over Jude at CAM. Only other option is to drop Foden. As with Trippier, we're really lacking a natural LB in the squad bar Shaw
There has to be an argument for having Bellingham as the captain. He is the heartbeat of the team. If Southgate had to choose a new captain out of Kane and Bellingham, I think he would choose Bellingham. But he is probably too scared to upset Kane.
Can't change captains now unless Kane gets dropped even then I think Southgate would still hand the armband to Walker or Stones, but its clear Jude is the leader of this team now he's the one that brings the belief that they can actually win a tournament
personally it isnt such a bad idea having foden on the bench to come on later in the game, its obvious the system and talent in place isnt suiting him anyways.
I always want England to do well in tournaments. But for fans/ex-players/media to say (eg on Overlap) that they're favourites is hubris, bordering on delusion. They clearly have good attackers, but squad-wise overall they're not even in the top 4 (Italy, Portugal, France, Spain for example). I hope England players are humble enough to realize that being famous and being a really good team are 2 different things, and they've won nothing for longer than most of the other (actual) favourites. I still hope they do well but if they can't even figure out their best midfield, then maybe focus on getting out of the group first 😅
When Kalvin Phillips played with Rice, it was him that got forward more & Dec sat deeper. Rice is a box to box midfielder, simples. He can play in that number 6 role & pick his moments to drive forward. We don’t need to play Rice with another sitter/depper midfielder, that’s nonsense.
TAA had a very good game Trent Alexander-Arnold’s game by numbers vs. Serbia: 91% pass accuracy 60 touches 5/7 long balls completed 3 shots 2 ground duels won 2 interceptions
But Rice isn’t a great progressive passer of the ball between the lines. He’s more of an 8 who is good at blocking and then carrying the ball forward. He’s not really a 6. Even Arsenal don’t play him there.
Agree. Give license to Bellingham to make the run forward when attacking so that we hv 2 no. 10. When defend, he back to 8. I think thats more suitable

I’ve rewatched the game and I think everyone is going why too over the top over Trent’s “bad” performance. This was the first time Trent played that specific role. Southgate spoke about it afterwards, how he was more disciplined to allow Jude to go forward and do his thing (as he should) 2 misplaced passes, one of which he recovered, and lost possession a few times (less than some other players on the pitch) but overall it wasn’t that bad. I think everyone was watching him with magnifying glasses to see if he could handle it and that one mistake then led to everyone freaking out and overanalysing. Multiple players caused chances for Serbia, including Saka, kane, walker and rice. But for someone who has never played in that specific role before, I think he did quite well and will likely be much better on Thursday. Mainoo probably would have performed roughly the same cause he also doesn’t play that role in a double pivot. It’s why Gallagher didn’t have a great time after he came on. I’m not sure what Wharton’s specific position is at palace so I’m unsure. Southgate needs to work out how to play a midfield 3 that allows Jude to do this thing without exposing the 3rd midfielder because all of the options alongside rice are inexperienced or young in that double pivot role. The times Trent was able to be more free, he almost scored and created 2 chances in the space of a handful of minutes. It’s not a Trent issue, it’s a Southgate issue.
Foden Kane and Bellingham can't play together as Kane does not have the pace to force the opposition to sit back and create the space for Foden nd Bellingham... At City Haaland forces the opposition to defend deep which creates the space for Foden ... Plus it seems that both Foden and Bellingham were stepping over each other last night It's not about having the best players its about having the variety to have the best combination .. its no coincidence that Foden NEVER had a single good game for England... So if Kane gonna start Foden needs to be sacrificed
There you go ,correct Halland creating space by stretching defensive line ,people who called him tap in merchant got no furken clue about football . So Foden can only play in that system where he can exploit that space . This is tactical idiocy by Southgate to play him on left wing ,that is where Grealish should be playing ,he is the best English player on the ball in last 20 years . Southgate should never get England job ,unable to pick right team and play cohesive football for 90 min. That friendly game against Iceland is a good indicator how good is this team .
Foden might need to be an impact player from the bench maybe starts second half when the game losens up 25 mins from the end when the gaps start to appear. You can see this tourament going to the wire when some big decisions need making by SG using his subs, not waiting 5 mins before the end. This is my concern with SG how he plays his hand with subs when the big teams are pressuring england
Southgate must play Gordon at LW Palmer at AM Bellingham at CM (Jude must supply more for strikers)Rice at DM Watkins/Toney at ST (Kane way off need striker to run behind defense ) and Saka at RW
He's bang on. The successful nations have all found out the sum of the parts is more important than shoehorning in all your great players (teams like germany and italy in particular over the years). They always have players doing the dirty/unfashionable work to allow the more talented players to shine.
England have been doing stupid stuff like this for years🤦 Having seen the stats radars for the possible midfield combo Rice, Wharton, Bellingham is the most balanced. TAA has some defensive gaps that Wharton covers while Rice and Bellingham cover what TAA is good at. TAA is also incredible at RB🤦 Team is just unbalanced.
Adam Wharton is a great defensive midfielder and a good partner for Rice. If they played in front of a back three, it would allow England to play three attacking midfielders where the have plenty of options while having a solid defensive line up.
Trent had 3 shots 1 a free kick from a dribble he made 5 successful long balls gave jude a pass in the box intercepted Serbia which gave walker a chance to score made solid free kick pass to rice gave saka 1 or 2 good passes and had 91 percent passing but yeah Trent was bad and invisible going forward to most. Meanwhile Foden 0 passes shots or successful dribble as a forward in 90 minutes. I dont usually play race card but damn
he's not totally wrong. We haven't got a true holding midfielder who can shield the back 4 and 'sweep up'. Rice isn't a holding midfielder but that's the role he is forced to do in this England team but whilst doing that we're not benefiting from him going forward. Henderson and Phillips are the closest we've got to those types of players. England historically just haven't produced many of those types of players.
@@mrdeafa25 false 9 is where instead of a traditional 9 who hangs up the pitch and waits for balls to them, they drop to receive the ball deeper which overloads the midfield and creates space to run into. its what de bruyne did when he played as a striker in the season before haaland got to city and its also what messi did with barcelona for years
Foden is a pep robot. He can’t play well for England…he never has! Bellingham is the talisman and should play 10. Saka and Eze wide with Mainoo/Wharton alongside Declan Rice. Foden should be benched. But he then goes on to say Southgate needs to pick someone on the basis of being able to play back to goal and pass out of defence… that isn’t a ball winner. It’s why he should play Gallagher - he’s the ball winner.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s game by numbers vs. Serbia: 91% pass accuracy 60 touches 5/7 long balls completed 3 shots 2 ground duels won 2 interceptions TAA played very well though, tackled, intercepts and passed well He also made a few of the attacks we had
Trent, Trippier and Foden out of place and underperforming. That quarterback role TTA plays at Liverpool only fits when there are 2 ppl going down the flanks and there was no left winger last night.
He played a completely different role last night than he’s ever played before. He was basically told to be the double pivot who sat so Jude could roam. He wasn’t able to even create much because that wasn’t his role last night (as per Southgate). The times he was, he created so many chances for the forward players. There was a 5 minute spell where he was more free, almost scored and created two amazing chances as well.
@@DELUSIONALDANNYG Trippier was way too defensive. Either move Bellingham back into midfield and play Foden in the 10 with Gordon on the left or play Mainoo in midfield and drop Foden or play Mainoo in midfield and swap Saka and Foden. Those are the best options and all of them include dropping TAA, who's not a midfielder.
Considering the caustic and judgemental criticism Trent gets from so pundits, he had 3 shots, 4 duels won and zero movement in front of him, and you still question him. This isn't punditry, it's bullying at it's finest.
He also gave the ball away needlessly on the edge if his own area almost resulting in an equaliser. Trent is brilliant at playing balls no one is debating that, he just isn't a CDM. It will show before the end of this tournament.
@Zero-Lucks-Given everyone gives the ball away noun again. Pickford gave it away about 10 times in the 2nd half by wellyng it up the pitch like a lower league team, cus the defenders are too nervous on the ball. All caused by players fearing getting dropped by Southgates uncompromising management skills if they make an error.
Southgate is a plonker. He has the perfect midfield 3 of Foden, Bellingham and Rice but nooooo he plays a right back in there and shifts Foden out to left wing. Its idiotic. Play Foden, Bellingham and Rice in midfield, play Gordon out on the left... If he wants TAA in the team then play him at right back and play Walker as CB instead of Guehi. But dont play TAA in central midfield. He isnt a central midfielder. England already have 3 of the best CMs in World football so why drop one for TAA?
Mainoo for me yeah no international experience but tbf he wasn’t bothered at coming in at United and doing a job so he just edgers it for me and I think that’ll give the right Balance
Southgate gave Mainoo a chance against Iceland and the kid played himself out of the team. He's simply not a holding midfielder. If playing Trent there doesn't work out, Wharton's the only real alternative in a 4231.

Foden and Trippier are a bad mix because neither want to run down the line. Foden needs Shaw overlapping and without that he becomes completely predictable.
We saw the exact same performance we always see with Southgates England; struggle to win, no observable tactics, no in game management, and questionable team selections. What i dont I understand is why people are always surprised; he serves up the same thing every time we play
Trent needs targets to hit and that is not what you get with an immobile center forward who spends most of his time in midfield. Kane will cost us with his lack of pace and winning mentality.
Agree. Despite all his goals for England (40 per cent of which are pens I think) I don't think he makes England play better as a team as his lack of pace and physicality up front really limits how we play. For a world class forward the influence he has on England, particularly in big games, is very negligible.

We need to decide which collection of midfielders and attackers works best together as a unit at this moment in time based on form and fitness. That may mean leaving Harry Kane, Foden or Saka out, or playing Bellingham in a more withdrawn role. Personally, I would probably play Wharton or Mainoo with Rice, Saka, right, Foden central and Bellingham on the left and Watkins up front.
Gary's right...think henderson was a good anchor for the team. I like him and miss him being there, solid proud english player. But the new guys have a huge opportunity in front of them...can they step into it...hope so.
The biggest issue is transitioning between the phases of the game. First half hr it worked. Then we got into half time 1-0 up. Made sure we didnt concede early in the 2nd half. All thats great. Its the last half hr. We need to be proactive with our subs and retake control of games. Trippier was far deeper, so Foden was isolated, thats when you bring on Gordon. Trent was playing with his back to goal more, thats when you bring on Wharton, Mainoo or Gallagher. 60 mins, not 75 when the natural reaction is to just see out the game It didnt work with Italy, it wont work now. Its about getting control again. Too often it was a few passes at the back, give it to Pickford, lump it up, prepare for another wave of attack. Needs to change
how on earth when you have rice, Bellingham, kobe, the midfield is a problem is beyond me, only Southgate could screw everything this hard, even if they grabbed a homeless crack head of the street to manage and he just told them to go have fun, they would litterly do better,
If this midfield balance is such a problem, why wasn't it identified before the squad was selected? If Wharton is too inexperienced, in spite of being a very good player, then someone else should have been selected.
@@NeilMalthus Yes I do understand that. If Alexander Arnold is not the solution and Wharton would complement Rice better, then Southgate should be brave enough to pick him.

Squares pegs in round holes! That's the imbalance and why we're less than the sum of our parts, trippier Lb, Trent Cm, foden Lw, all out of position and it'll never be cohesive. Trippier is because of injury so it's acceptable but the other 2 are on Southgate! Play rice and Bellingham as a double pivot, put foden at 10 and play a proper left winger who will hold width. the emotion that tied us to our premierleage club fun base mislead many pundit not to comment clearly from what they saw on the pitch. Really England problem is not only luck of manager but also the good pundit
If we do have the great fortune of having depth in attacking positions, we can exploit that with substitutions, keeping our front four fresh during and for games. Playing players out of position doesn't seem a logical way of maximising their impact. Just my opinion.
Bellingham natural position is an 8 ,he can tackle and also drive forward with the ball it would also allow foden to play 10 ,they have a win under their belt so it has to be tried in 1 of the remaining group games

I don’t t understand Neville’s Narrative about Rice not being a 6. He was exceptional playing there in the first half of the season and the only reason he played some games as an 8 was because there was no other option and Kai wasn’t working there. I think for Neville to say Rice is not a Busquets or Rodri is extremely disrespectful. Rice is elite at the defensive side of the game especially interceptions, blocks and tackling.
nothing wrong with the midfield.. we just need a manager who plays football like liverpools jurgen klopp or man citys pep guardiola high pressing dominating attacking football... and not playing like manchester united passive and defensive and making world class players looking terrible
There was no imbalance. It was just that 2nd half we didn't get a high enough line and we played containing football all as a group instead of players hunting the ball in packs and then moving forward as a group. That is nothing, and I mean nothing about imbalance. It was purely about bad tactics. That team in the first half looked brilliant and if Kane was actually fit, he would have had a tap-in for 2-0 when Kyle Walker broke through. Any other manager with a brain in the tournament would have identified Kane's lack of fitness and sharpness and taken him off for Watkins and then played a higher line around 55/60 minute point.
Gary Neville is Spot-On to be fair. England have had this midfield problem for last 20 years. For me it's simple to solve. The manager has to pick one No8 not both. Everybody can see Bellingham must play so Foden sits on the bench. England are the only team that are still working-out what their best team is in the Euros. Southgate should've sorted this by game 3 of qualification. Nowhere near Euro 2020 form. Terrible.
Resulting is not the way to analyse this game. Sitting back, the left side, the predictability, Foden, and Kane being pretty insignificant. GS should have addressed both the sit-back approach and the Foden/LHS issue. These issues don't change with a win and three points.
England were fantastic for the first thirty minutes. However, the problem is NOT the players, but the negative mindset of the manager when the team goes into a lead. We are in the easiest group to qualify from. So we need to have more positivity in our mindset. Hopefully the manager will learn from this first game.
As an aussie who shouldn't even care, to create 'balance' with the current squad can only see 3-5-2 doing it. Walker drops into right CB, TAA to RWB, Trippier dropped and Saka told to do job at LWB being a natural left footer. Then whoever suitable CDM to partner Rice, Foden partners Kane up top but has license to go where ever, even dropping deep when Bellingham can make his runs into the box.
If Southgate can’t find a way to play Foden & Bellingham together in the centre as 10s the he has to drop Foden and play Gordon to get natural width
I agree...it's a big big decision unthinkable a few months ago but it's just not working out...he's offering very little

All pundits after the game: "The defence is great, the attack is a concern"
That defence wasn’t tested last night. Serbia’s final ball was shocking.
Foden is a big problem
He said the midfield is a concern which is exactly what he said on The Overlap before this tournament started.
I was just about to say this, before the game “it’s the defence that’s a concern” said a Mr Gary Neville, now “it’s the midfield that’s a major concern” said a Mr Gary Neville. 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Midfield the concern
Foden is probably a 9/10 as a player. Gordon is probably a 7/10. However, when playing left wing in a 4-2-3-1, Foden is probably a 5 or 6. Really think Gordon must be on the left.
He needs to sometimes be on the left to strectch the play and provide an alternative attacking threat. He cannot always be in the centre.
yesterday he was always in the middle and their was no left threat.
Yeah, maybe swap TAA for Fods & Gordon on left
you guys need to see through the foden bullshit. He is a bang average player, im going to sound crazy but as soon as Pep leaves you will see his true colours.
@@rashadhaynes2576 I totally agree with this. He's a bang average player made to look good surrounded by foreign stars.
Very reminiscent of the Italy game in the Wembley final. Once England scores an early goal suddenly you see England sitting much deeper, with playing conservative putting the handbrake on. Southgate has no backbone or tactical knowledge, he isn't a tactician and Mancini outwitted him
We normally lose psychologically on all fronts before the tournament has even started. Learn to play chess, not boxing.
We lost on penalties
Your right when in the last euro final against Italy when England took the lead after they just sat back and invited Italy to attack them then Italy got the equalizer then they lose the game on penalties England have some excellent young players and some good experience players as well I'm not sure they gel as a team Gareth Southgate done a good job for England I'm not sure go that one step further to win a trophy for England
For sure
This problem predates Southgate tbh. 2000 against Portugal and Romania, 2002 against Brazil, 2004 against France and Portugal, 2016 against Iceland, 2018 Croatia, 2021 Italy... it seems to be part of England's DNA to pull back after an early lead, without learning their lessons.
The manager is the majority concern.

I’ve rewatched the game and I think everyone is going why too over the top over Trent’s “bad” performance.
This was the first time Trent played that specific role. Southgate spoke about it afterwards, how he was more disciplined to allow Jude to go forward and do his thing (as he should)
2 misplaced passes, one of which he recovered, and lost possession a few times (less than some other players on the pitch) but overall it wasn’t that bad.
He may not have made any defensive mistakes, but his unwillingness to step into the space Foden is leaving when he cuts inside means the entire left side of the field is empty. Can't get width, can't stretch teams, can't get in behind, can't use Kane
Trent and tripper were fine what are you on about , the only one I agree with was Foden ?? Trent needs pace which should have been subbed on instead of Bowen and flipping gallagher
Gary said we football pundits have great football knowledge but what happened at Valencia. You do not have the tactical experience to comment on these things
Gary’s eyesight is a major concern
Gallagher for Trent. Eze/Gordon for Foden. This team is designed for counter attack especially against a good side. Pace on the wings is essential.
Either move Bellingham back into midfield and play Foden in the 10 with Gordon on the left or play Mainoo in midfield and drop Foden or play Mainoo in midfield and swap Saka and Foden. Those are the best options and all of them include dropping TAA, who's not a midfielder.
Maino 😂😂😂catch a grip
TAA is world class just needs to right role. I thought he ok yesterday and better than foden. Southgate is the issue.
Mainoo was constantly caught out of position on his debut for h'ingerland
@@pm9268 He isn't a MF player. Slow and very poor positionally. Rice was alone most of the time.
United fan
The time to get players playing together is before the tournament…
💯
Southgate gave Mainoo a chance against Iceland and the kid played himself out of the team. He's simply not a holding midfielder.
If playing Trent there doesn't work out, Wharton's the only real alternative in a 4231.
@@jonathancampbell9133 I get where your coming from but I don’t feel like anyone had a good game maybe Adam Wharton can come in there but he’s also young I think although it’s a bit boring Connor Gallagher would do the job there what needs to be done. Is a hard one tbf but carrick was also over looked because he’s not flamboyant but we don’t need that.
@@matthewfoley636You're right, they didn't. Mainoo wasn't to blame for the performance against Iceland, but it showed he's not a 6 and isn't ready to be starting for England.
Trent is ready, knows his game and did enough to be given another chance. But if he and England fade in the second half again, Southgate might have to take a look @ Wharton in the final group game. At least he's a natural 6. Gallagher's an 8. He'd put in a shift wherever they played him, but he's not got enough quality on the ball.
And Gordon should play on the left too. Playing Foden out there is unbalancing the team.
@@matthewfoley636 the game felt a lot more secure when gallagher came on last night honestly. he's not the prettiest footballer but he started winning balls and it felt the game was a bit more locked down. obviously less attacking threat but i didn't feel like we were going to concede either. We came out with a win against a surprisingly good defensive Serbia team with an average height of 6'2 who were playing rugby with us at times. we look at other nations who do that and call it 'pragmatic' but for us its not good enough. I think the performance was professional and the job got done
My midfield: Rice and Bellingham with Eze as 10, Gordon left, Saka Palmer right 😊
Arteta has not worked out that Declan Rice isn't a sweeper - he has just been fortunate enough to take charge of him in a team of players where it can be afforded to push him up the pitch - it really isn't rocket-science chaps 🙄
Foden and Trippier are a bad mix because neither want to run down the line. Foden needs Shaw overlapping and without that he becomes completely predictable.
Mainoo has to start, his first touch and match awareness is above the rest in his position.
Gary Nevile Top Management material 😅
Get Wharton/mainoo in there alongside rice. Come on England
? and drop bellingham lol
@@vkjfv drop trent!
@@ChompzG ok thought u were saying get mainoo and wharton on alongside rice
We saw the exact same performance we always see with Southgates England; struggle to win, no observable tactics, no in game management, and questionable team selections. What i dont I understand is why people are always surprised; he serves up the same thing every time we play
James Ward Prowse should be there, it's not always the most talented ones as GNEV says.
Takes a better free kick than Trent
Neville is correct something is not right. Just select a midfielder to play alongside Rice, one who has that role for his club.
I can't take that bloke seriously when he comments on managing a football team.
Luckily, we can take you seriously as you've posted comments on TH-cam.
He played at the top level for club and country for the best part of a decade. I think he'll have half an idea what he's talking about
That doesn't make him an authority on managing a football team. Roy hodgsons number 2.. valencia.. great player, but no management skill
It’s patently obvious. TAA is not a midfielder and Jude is just simply better than Foden.
@@KevinSheedy10 I think Kane is a great player but you have to play to his strengths. I do find we play too many tactics and not enough players making things happen
@@steveallen3434 We need to pick a team that gets the best out of all of our talent as a unit. Italy had Del Piero, Baggio, Zola, Mancini and Totti more os less at the same time. I think they only ever picked one to start because they all play the same position.
@@steveallen3434every team Kane plays for is built around him and they win zilch. The guys too leggy has been for years
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s game by numbers vs. Serbia: 91% pass accuracy 60 touches 5/7 long balls completed 3 shots 2 ground duels won 2 interceptions
Gary's right...think henderson was a good anchor for the team. I like him and miss him being there, solid proud english player. But the new guys have a huge opportunity in front of them...can they step into it...hope so.
Henderson disrespect is mad definition of a solid reliable player
Simple put Bellingham in midfield with Rice play Foden as a 10 and put Gordon on the left
agreed, dunno why southgate makes it so hard, foden tired can replace with palmer
Will foden deliver goals , as much as Bellingham will in the 10? Because if Foden doesn't step up who will as kane looks like his not yet up to speed
Yeah, put the best player out of his best position to suit the team... smh
Stones and Guehi were immense
Stones a bit shaky at times
As long as Neville thinks it's wrong, we know it's right 👍
Start Wharton
England have been better since 2016. Mysteriously also since Gary left the scene. What a coincidence
how on earth when you have rice, Bellingham, kobe, the midfield is a problem is beyond me, only Southgate could screw everything this hard, even if they grabbed a homeless crack head of the street to manage and he just told them to go have fun, they would litterly do better,
Kobe is very inexperienced
@@tayzk5929 so what? play foden 10, drop bellinghm in 8
3 points is the most important thing, you don't want to go into the next game needing to win, that ups the pressure, a good result.
The fact that Palmer has done what he has with Chelsea means he should be on the pitch.
Imagine they had a good manager they could win this tournament easily but Southgate has them playing so slowly with no ideas.
If this midfield balance is such a problem, why wasn't it identified before the squad was selected? If Wharton is too inexperienced, in spite of being a very good player, then someone else should have been selected.
You can't play 26 players all at once, you do realise?
@@NeilMalthus Yes I do understand that. If Alexander Arnold is not the solution and Wharton would complement Rice better, then Southgate should be brave enough to pick him.
With Trippier at LB I’d have swapped Saka and Foden around so saka can get crosses in
Trent was crap in Midfield will get eaten up by Better midfields as the tournament goes on... Foden looked lost...Kane was awful legs have gone n Guehi was the best player on the pitch
Jude was even better
Trent lives rent free in that empty head . Mainoo was shocking . England fell apart when Trent came off. Negative ball knowledge.
I hope we get to see Wharton alongside Rice....could be real effective
No it’s not. Play Trent at right-back, Mainoo in midfield and Gordon on the wing. Bench the overrated Walker and Foden.
Bench walker. Nonsense
Walker overrated 😂😂😂
Squares pegs in round holes! That's the imbalance and why we're less than the sum of our parts, trippier Lb, Trent Cm, foden Lw, all out of position and it'll never be cohesive. Trippier is because of injury so it's acceptable but the other 2 are on Southgate! Play rice and Bellingham as a double pivot, put foden at 10 and play a proper left winger who will hold width. It's really not that hard.
the emotion that tied us to our premierleage club fun base mislead many pundit not to comment clearly from what they saw on the pitch.
Call me old fashioned, but What happened to the box-to-box midfielder and what is the difference between a left midfielder and a left wing-back. What is a no 10 a forward or a midfielder
@@steveallen3434 I totally agree ,I hate all this 6 ,8 and 10 when it was teams played 442 central midfielders done all of those roles ,tackling ,driving forward, dictating play ,hardly anyone plays 442 anymore
England are a better version of Scotland in football. The rest of the world knows…
On point Garry..England needs some1 to do the dirty work,we can't have only fancy players in the Middlefield.
Rodri is the only holder really for City and he still scores goals. Its about timing. Rice can get fwd if he wants. Fabinio scored goals. Kante. Even Rice himself got foward for Arsenal even in the 6.
Have Gordon play for heaven's sake! He takes on players big time, which opens up things for the rest of the team.
He is bang on here. Carrick should have had hundred caps. Instead they picked a right winger or number 10 for Liverpool to play there.
The left hand side from LB to LM to LW was a concern.
Tienes toda la razón
As an aussie who shouldn't even care, to create 'balance' with the current squad can only see 3-5-2 doing it. Walker drops into right CB, TAA to RWB, Trippier dropped and Saka told to do job at LWB being a natural left footer. Then whoever suitable CDM to partner Rice, Foden partners Kane up top but has license to go where ever, even dropping deep when Bellingham can make his runs into the box.
