At half time we were crying out to change that front 3 - bringing on Toney with 2 mins are you joking? We didn't win that tonight because of Southgate - we won that because of pure chaos. I'm not even sure what formation or style of play we were going for at the end. About 8 defenders, Saka playing in goal probably - it was pure chaos and we won from a long throw and a magical bicycle kick.
Play Tony up front with kane, Sarja at left back, Palmer on the right. The team we ended up with. Tony was epic, heald up the ball, suggested to walker about the headed flick on, the throwing before the goal, and then assisted kane! My take on England is that they're playing to survive, with defensive and risk-averse tactics. Now look at Spain, who have have aggressively pursued and achieved wins in every one of their games. Spain clearly believe they can win the whole thing, and it's paying off. The one thing going in England favour is that the side of the knockout stages they've landed on is arguably more forgiving than the other side, which has Spain, Germany, France, etc. In theory England could survive all the way to the final, but I don't see them ever winning a final playing the way they are. Every team we've played against has locked down the midfield in front of their area and nullified any attacking threat from England. It's not a proper 4231, it's 433 with 2 DMs. Portugal play a proper 4231 with 3 players working as interchangeable No10s and fullbacks providing the overlap. England need a left footed LB in there, to put a winger on each wing (surprise) and give whoever is next to Rice the freedom to go forward. It's so stagnant in midfield we lack control...
