Idk I think I'll stick to a fixed blade for camping. My USMC Bulldog has been almost perfect. 7.5" blade, chisel tip with a beater nub at the end of the handle. Even split logs with this beast. Only problem is I've lost the beater nub. Lol Need to find another one.... Also, I'm honestly not even sure if the steel type but I can shave my arm or chop through the shit like a machete. Got it about 20 years ago @ BigFive for around $20. Wouldn't mind finding a more premium upgrade to it though. It's well deserved.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I avoided it because it's stupid. Chris the couch ninja up there is correct, but absolutely no one is using it that way. It's just marketing for pretenders. Anything can be "designed as a weapon". Makes more sense to review it for what it's realistically being used for.

I agree that this is a highly useful tool for a lot of different kinds of tasks. You could probably baton with it without breaking it, but i would never do that outside of an emergency. I do think that this thing is build to be a martial blade, and as such, its a fantastic choice. If you are in a situation where you need to defend your life, there are very few other folding blades that are better. If thats you, I suggest practicing with it.

With American tanto style blade you can drop the edge angle below 12DPS at the belly and get the best of both worlds: stout tip and extremely slicy belly. Surprisingly versatile, despite looking mallninja.
Edit: One tip for those wanting to carry one of these as EDC: sand/ductape/epoxy the area where pocketclip touch the handle so it doesn't destroy your pocket. Applies to the entire range of voyagers from sane to not very sane.

All fans of Cold Steel Tanto knives for martial use are aware of the extraordinary properties of the secondary point. The snap cut technique of knife fighting is essentially like the jab in boxing. All Tantos employed for self defense can make excellent use of the snap cut with the secondary point. Fixed blades as well as folders. This XL Voyager Tanto in particular takes it to the next level. Why? Because when you choke back on the extended grip you put enormous distance between you and your opponent. A sharp flick of the wrist delivers a fight stopping V-shaped cut if you're opting for a non lethal way of defending your life. This is a very capable stabber and slasher, of course, but this knife will get you through the night without having to dispatch anyone if it isn't absolutely necessary.

why aren´t there aftermarket scales for Cold steel knives...Your Benchmade Bugout with Titanium scales does it get thicker than the orignal scales? Would be nice because the are so thin - hard to hold and get a good grip...
And why aren´t there any custom made Multitools is there no market? Titanium, Pliers, Phillps, screwdriver, Can opener, Como saw metal and wood and scissors, little smaller than the Rebar. Don´t need a MT with a knife.

Most cold steel folders have handles that are just two slabs of G10 holding all the guts. To make it out of the same material with the same precision will be very cost prohibitive for small volume shops. Also consider how low cold steel goes for even with the 2021 price hike.

Well my favorite EDC knife is my Curtiss F3, CKF Satori or my Valance knives Gamma. They are all large 4" blades weighing between 6.5-8.5 oz. I don't carry "normal" people knives and the only "knife" tasks I do are cut tabs once In a blue moon and "fiddle" or "fidget" or flick flip and close. That's all. My knives go in my pockets bc I love knives. It's very seldom I use my knives for the sharp part. But I'm always ready, I always have it. Unfortunately I don't buy "value" knives anymore and that's because of my uses. I don't need one so there's no sense buying knives for anything other than collecting. That's how I save money lol. My savings account is my knife and firearms collection lol. Thanks for the content.
    God bless

I carry at least one of these everyday. You can tuck one behind your belt and forget about it all day. This is a great knife for self defense. This is not designed for an outdoor camp knife. This is a fighting knife. The tip is excellent in stabbing penetration and the secondary tip is for a powerful snap cut.

I've carried this knife for about 10 years now and put it through hell. Finally retiring it though. I closed the blade on my fingers the other day at work because I was twisting and wrenching the blade through some straps and my gloved hands accidentally hit the lock bar. It's getting replaced with the mini leathernecks and tanto series. I ordered the dagger and bowie mini leathernecks earlier today and just ordered the Kyoto II an hour or so ago. Can't wait until they get here. Out of all the knives I've owned from the various companies, I like Cold Steel the best. Good value for the money, and very robust designs.

I have an OLD Voyager XL. I bought it after my Large Voyager (the 4" blade) disappeared on me years ago. I shortly went back to using a 4" model as it fit more into my use parameters at the time.
I really like the XL, but generally, the Large is my go-to option.

I usually carry the XL Voyager clip point daily. I honestly don’t think it’s that big for a daily carry. The Espada is a ridiculously big folder. I would much rather carry a fixed 7 1/2” blade than the Espada. I work construction and the XL Voyager can stand up to most anything on a construction site. I think everyone who is a knife Knut should have at least one of the XL Voyagers. Cold Steel has carved out (pun intended) a place in the world of knife makers. It’s a place very few other knife makers will go.

That knife goes very well into a "go kit" which you should have "around" on most days. That said.....it'd have to be a very bad day for me to pull that thing out.....bad enough I wouldn't be worried about legalities. Lol.

    Metal Complex,
I always enjoy your content, but I have to ask. Why does it seem that so many knife enthusiast ( not saying you do) take an almost pretentious, condescending tone towards fellow enthusiast who chose to carry a knife for defense, and who want to select knives that facilitate that purpose? I work by myself in some very rough parts of town, and am not allowed to carry firearms by dept regs. I am allowed to carry knives, and I am perplexed as to why, somebody would want to be so judgmental about it. I am not implying you do this btw, but I’m sure you understand what I am talking about.
    Chris

Oh no I'm not bothered by anyone's individual reasoning. I'm bothered as a content creator when the self defense community drops down into the comments just to crap down everyone's throats because we "don't take these objects seriously enough". Not everyone does this, but you'd be shocked to see some of the absolute nonsense that gets blasted down here. That's why I do a bit of damage mitigation

Come on, say it! You know what a pocket knife this size is for. I mean I bought mine to use if I ever had to cut a "Soft" target. You know, unalive something that might be trying to hurt you. Two legged or four legged.

    • @gigilaco

Metal Complex constantly makes fun of people who consider dangerous situations when buying a knife. Down right condescending to be honest. In reality we all consider this and it’s totally fine. Some of us actually live in dangerous areas where that worry is valid.

I love my XL Voyager tanto. Carry it all the time on the outside of my pocket. Works fabulous. Remarkably light for such a big knife. Fairly "slicey" blade stock for the size as well. My only complaint is the scales. Don't care for them. Too thin and too rough. But the knife is sharp as heck and will do damn near anything.
