    The Steam Deck and Ally went head-to-head in Hogwarts Legacy. Which was your pick of the match? Share your thoughts!

    Heat and battery life, everything i need to know that’s not usually compared directly side by side!! THANK YOU!!

    Love these comparisons especially with battery time included showing that the Ally ain’t that bad compared to the Deck when running at the same wattages and getting a better performance 😊

    Again it comes down Ally gain more performance at the cost of battery vs while the Deck sacrificing some performance for much longer battery life at 10 TDP. As a portable handheld Switch > Deck > Ally. In docking mode Ally > Deck > Switch.
    In portable handheld mode I would prefer running the Ally at 18-20 TDP where the 7840u is the most efficient. You should check the Ally performance at 18 TDP and compare it with 25 TDP and see if the extra 7 watts is worth it.

    I just finished a 2 hours and 15 minutes FH5 session on my ARA running my APU on average of 8 watts and screen resolution 1080p @ a steady 120 fps max settings. Riddle me this? I just learned about this method a day ago but it appears as though this method has been around for some time. Streaming games from my gaming pc and also from my PS5 utilizing remote access and port forwarding on my router. These methods allow the pc/ps5 to do all the heavy lifting and the ARA to function as a 120hz screen with a joystick that can also run native game on a pinch if wifi is not available. Granted this may not be for everyone but tbh playing Jedi Survivor at an avg 90fps 1080p @ epic setting with ray tracing really shows the beauty of the ARA. PS5 @ 60 fps max'd setting on GT7 is sublime. Plenty of YoutTube videos on how to setup your ARA stream your pc/ps5. Cheers!

    what interests me the most is that the Deck can run this game at 10W but still maintain an average 30 FPS. Impressive. Also the Ally is really strong, just a little of polishing in software.

      The Deck custom chip was designed to run games at very low wattage. The down side is the chip performance increase drops off sharply after 11 TDP. AT 15 tdp the 4 extra watts mostly turns to heat. The 7840u is a general purpose laptop apu designed to run 15 tdp- 30 tdp.

      I runs anything on 10w, I'm more on battery saver. 10 and 15 difference is not that much. Also 10w runs cooler and quite.

  • @AllyPal

    Curious if you're running these tests with Memory Integrity and Virtual Machine Platform disabled? It makes quite a big difference. I'm mostly asking because your battery drain seems to be significantly higher than mine running at 15w on the ally

    • @benchmarkbros
      @benchmarkbros  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got both disabled. What battery life are you getting at 15W?

    • @AllyPal
      @AllyPal ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benchmarkbros at 15w it seems like you're getting 26w battery drain on average. The highest I've seen mine go is 24w when I set brightness to 100%. I have been playing with Windows power profiles, so perhaps something I did there makes the difference 🤔

    I run my ally at 13 watts when on the go beats the deck at 15 watts and gets be better battery life and when plugged in this thing curb stomps the deck

    You should test the ally at 18W. Its the sweetspot of battery life and performance

    this is great and everything but you literally have to set the GPU capacity to auto otherwise the shaders dont compile and then the game plays like utter s**t on the ROG. Don't get me wrong I love the ROG, I sold my steam deck after owning both, but having to change the from 4G to auto to play certain games is a pain in the ass.

    • @JacobVanasse

    • @toot7642

      @@JacobVanasse because performance on a large number of games including cyberpunk or mass effect legendary is incredibly stuttery on auto, a lot of games are not optimised for auto allocated GPU memory

    Why is the 10w is better then the 15w with the Deck???

    Any issues with thermal throttle using 30w mode plugged in? My temps get up to 95c and fans kick in super loud playing RE3 maxed out

    • @benchmarkbros
      @benchmarkbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you tried using a custom fan mode? I have set up a custom fan curve so that the fans run at 100% when the temperature reaches 80ºC. I'm using an SPL of 30W, an SPPT of 43W, and an FPPT of 53W. With these settings, the temperatures I'm getting are around 77ºC.

    Now im wondering what if we put steam OS on the Ally then see maybe it runs better in battery life ? I mean it kind suxs for ally that the steam deck keeps on trucjing so hard . Im may return the Ally back to best buy 😢 the screen is nice but pwrformance is bad 👎

    • @benchmarkbros
      @benchmarkbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ally has the same battery life as the Steam Deck when the APU is set to 15W. So using SteamOS would not make the Ally get more battery life, or at least it won't be as noticeable as you might expect.

  • @jr086m
    @jr086m ปีที่แล้ว

    Wait! The Steam Deck doesn't have 1080p!!! Am I wrong?

    • @benchmarkbros
      @benchmarkbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does if you connect it to an external monitor 😉

    • @jr086m
      @jr086m ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think that’s a fair comparison at all. Seems deceptive. If you also connect the Ally to a power source, its processing power should jump some, no? Either both docked or both undocked for a more accurate comparison, I would say. I watch these videos so I can make a choice on which one will be a better system to get in the long run.

    • @benchmarkbros
