"You don't have to get rid of your emotions to live in accordance with your values." Probably the best explanation of "you are not your emotions" I have heard. Pearls of wisdom jam-packed into 25 minutes or so.
how is someone so wise and it’s so humble and kind to share this knowledge with everyone. I feel lucky to know her and be able to listen to her every time I need it.
Thought Diffusion: Concept: Observing and detaching from thoughts rather than getting caught up in their content. Application: Differentiating between thoughts and actions, particularly in areas like weight loss and business. Example: Choosing not to eat despite feeling hungry or wanting to eat, and facing situations where tempting food is present. Technique: Visualizing thoughts as fish in a pond, identifying the unproductive ones, and discarding them. Emphasis: Separating oneself from thoughts and emotions, using language to gain control over them. Self as Context: Concept: Avoiding over-attachment to self-created identities and stories. Application: Acting contrary to one’s usual self-perceptions in various situations. Example: Acting unanxious despite feeling anxious, breaking the identity of being an anxious person. Emphasis: Realizing that thoughts and emotions are separate from the self, allowing for action despite discomfort. Acceptance: Concept: Developing a new relationship with thoughts and emotions, accepting them rather than rejecting or avoiding. Application: Embracing discomfort and anxiety as part of experience. Example: Dealing with anxiety attacks by accepting and staying in the situation, rather than fleeing. Emphasis: Accepting negative emotions can often help dissipate them, likened to escaping quicksand by staying still. Presence: Concept: Staying in the present moment, avoiding dwelling on past or future. Application: Using activities like walking or meditation to observe surroundings and thoughts. Example: Changing routines regularly to avoid becoming overly reliant on them for stress management. Emphasis: Being present allows for observation rather than getting engulfed by thoughts. Values: Concept: Defining personal values to guide decisions and actions. Application: Identifying values from admired individuals or personal qualities. Example: Narrowing down to three key values for easier daily application. Emphasis: Values act as filters for making decisions aligned with personal goals and desires. Committed Action: Concept: Taking actions that align with personal values, not out of fear or avoidance. Application: Incorporating new habits into existing routines, substituting behaviors, and planning for imperfections. Example: Linking a new habit (like taking vitamins) with an established routine (like brushing teeth). Emphasis: Acknowledging that change is a process, and not expecting perfection. Action is essential for learning and progress.
My brain has been binge-eating Alex's podcast, and I was like "Alex is a genius! Alex is a genius!" then I listened to Alex and Leila on the Bigger Pockets podcast and was like "Leila is a genius! Leila is a genius!" Leila and Alex produce insane quality *and* insane quantity - hard work pays off. Thank you Leila!
You’re an amazing teacher and therapist Leila! You’re my virtual coach. Thank you so much for all the valuable free content you share. Onward and upward. ♥️🌹
So good in just the few weeks I’ve listened to her channel, momentum is crazy. Learning so much from doing and accessing results and data. Ty for such valuable insights and thought provoking outlooks
I have been suffering from extreme panic disorder, but I am turning the corner. The principles in this video are going to help me achieve my goal of living a great life without being paralyzed by fear, aka negative thoughts and emotions. I'm still figuring it out, but this helped a TON. Thank you, Leila! ❤
I am not the type that is leaving comments under youtube videos. But this was soooo good. I am amazed of how you put out and verbalise the knowledge and wisdom in such an awesome way. Thank you Leila, this was brilliant. I am going to rewatch it right now, I want to absorb the awesomeness hhhah.
Wow these older pictures are really transformative, and it's great that you allow yourself to have other people see these vulnerable/insecure parts of your life as a way to help us. Was subbed to Alex for a couple months now, also subbed to you today.
I have watched hrs of videos, and from the bottom of my heart this 25 minute video is the one that has impacted me the most. She is dropping gems, and I thank her !
This is a really intersting video with some very interestin tips I've never heard before. The idea of dissasociating from your thoughts and emotions and observing them almost as a third party is fascinating. I've never even thought about this. Even just sitting in this chair I'm now think about how my body feels and why I'm suddenly feeling inspired. I'm going to try to practice this all day tomorrow and see how it feels. Also I love your quicksand analogy, it makes so my sense to me. I feel like I unlocked a new level of consciousness just by watching this video. I'm using a part of my brain that I've never used before. I'm observing myself existing, instead of just existing. Fascinating.
This is a rare content to find these days. A beautiful human discussing everyday human issues with such clarity and authenticity. Leila, thank you for sharing your insights and connecting with us on a deeper level.
Wow Leila. You have a gift for articulating really complex concepts in a way that are not only easy to understand, but highly accessible and actionable. Thank you for taking the time to think through this video and sharing. ❤
It looks like you're in your zone! You've mentioned that videos where you're talking to the camera, you are not your sweet spot. Your energy and excitement in this video are palpable. It's great.
I like the fish in the pond, and it reminds me of some basic mindfulness and meditiation techniques. Being the observer, realizing that you are not your thoughts or emotions, and choosing to just let thoughts go by like cars passing on a road rather than reacting. I don't know if the idea here came from meditation or mindfulness practice, but it's powerful.
This is also good advise for people having anxiety. Because people with bad anxiety always look for something to do about it while the thing that solves it is. Notice it welcome it and go on with what you where doing.
1) I LOVE your content. 2) I’m so impressed that you’ve been able to come to these conclusions so young. I’m in my 40’s and just now beginning to understand that I can have negative emotions and anxiety and allow space for it with out trying to expell it or give it too much attention.
So many hidden gems in this video. WOW. I'm definitely in need of an identity shift. I didn't realize what my thoughts were dictating me to do, and what that really meant for my health and well being. You give the best advice, and I LOVE the way you teach. This video was so helpful.
Thank you for sharing "quite the elaborate story" with us. As soon as you said, "And then I'm gonna be HOMELESS," I cracked up, as in "That's exactly what I do!" Now, I need to decide what I'm gonna name my brain.
Leila- you've posted an increasing variety of topics, and they're all are pretty valuable. This video, I must say, is one of my favorites! After taking a lot of notes for me to personally implement, I've forwarded it to my (grown) kids, and posted it in my therapy group (I'm a hypnotherapist, we talk about a lot of topics in our group, and your video hits on a lot of Really Important life coping/ life management skills, both in general, and as it pertains to mental health/mental fitness.) 'Very empowering ideas & strategies. Thanks for this very thoughtful video!
I always say to myself "Life is Easy, People make it Hard... don't be one of those people." Then I do whatever I have to do to GSD! Regardless of how I feel. ❤
The example on how to figure out your values is so helpful! I recently realized that was one of the things I was missing therefore keeping me in confused state. I already started getting clarity just thinking about it. Thank you!!

i laughed my ass off at you calling your brain Georgia , ‘Georgia is at it again starting something’, what a great technique! Really loved this video, you distilled so many concepts into such s short space of time. I’ll definitely be re-watching it to take notes!
You could be one of the greatest high-performance coaches in the world. You should start writing a book on personal effectiveness! I have learned more in this video than I have learned in thick self-help books. Your strength is in directiveness and a no-nonsense mentality.
Leila, thank you for sharing your vetted wisdom. I am so grateful to you and others who attain genuine, comprehensive success and share your knowledge. I lost my resilience during the pandemic but now telling myself that story continues to make it true. Life is challenging but talking about good tools and getting back to action is invaluable. 💜
Some disclosure,I have a psychology background and am autistic. This is a great mindset for some people and covers a lot of techniques used in third wave psychotherapies. I do however think it lacks nuance (something almost all self-help suffers from)and takes a ‘toxically positive’ stance to personal development. We need to remember that a person’s values and goals do not precede their physical reality and sometimes, the former needs to be adjusted,so that it is more sustainable. It’s easy to say that you can manage yourself despite your feelings or practice cognitive diffusion but at what point does it become gaslighting yourself or lead to burnout? The answer will be different for everyone depending on their resources and goals.
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen someone talk about. Thank you Leila for your way explaining these concepts in such an easy to understand manner. I’m definitely going to be using this in my day to day from now on
You are the golden ticket and I love your examples you give which really helps me understand the meaning of what you are saying!! 😅Thank you, thank you!!❤❤ From Portage, MI. And my routines used to own me, if I just work out, if I just do this etc. 😊
