I wouldn’t say scam. It’s probably more just lack of care. They probably have a corporate policy on returns and “open box” sales that doesn’t take into account something like that code.
As a former Best Buy employee, this doesn't surprise me. Open box items typically arent scrutinized and can include few to no accessories, as long as the main device is there.
Asda is the UK equivalent (although part of the Walmart brand) and I remember as a kid anyone at school with a broken Xbox would wait for Christmas, get a new one, then return the broken one in the new box for cash
I have a theory about the PS5. Someone probably bought it for their kid, the kid got in some kind of massive trouble at school and the parents returned it.
The most ridiculous thing is that Best Buy couldn't be bothered to take a damp paper towel and even wipe the console off. Absolutely ridiculous for almost $500.
If this was me in this situation, I’d take a shot at contacting Sony’s customer support chat and seeing what they can do. Or walk into a Best Buy and talk to a manager.
My guess is that they stole the code, AND they replaced their old PS5 controller and console with a new one before returning it. Best Buy shouldn’t have taken it back.
Guessing by how they bought the bundle, they got the PS5, played it for a week, got bored, it sat the next week, and they returned it. Very common with PS5s. 100% of everyone would've redeemed the code as that's the only game you'll have for a week. And with Best Buy's open box policy, everyone knows that it's used and it could be in any condition, and seeing it was being sold cheaper than the base model, they didn't need to compensate for a grade c sale
Not a huge fan of Best Buy, but they have to honor a return within 2 weeks from purchase. Generally, opened software cannot be returned, but BB can't refuse the PS5 return just because the MW2 verification code got redeemed. The 1st owner definitely gamed the return policy. Sadly, there just isn't a way between retailers and publishers to reactivate access codes in these combo products. Can't say it's completely their fault.
Yes and no. I don't fault the person for gaming the system because they were probably honest about it but BB had to accept the return. That being said, they should have knocked off a lot more than they did. The console bundle is going for $539, and the game alone is still $40-45, plus they should have marked off a lot more since it was clearly used.
@@michaelh3583 They just need to update their description of open box to say included game/codes MAY NOT be valid anymore. and just tell you from the start and to shop wisely.
I think because of the condition of the console and controller I think this was the persons older PS5 that they returned claiming it was the one originally in the box
as a former bby employee i can tell you they usually put minor scratches/residue. For game consoles they do factory reset them i know i did everytime at customer service. Open box has usually been used (exception to when we had to open box a new product because of packaging or something). Their standard return window is 14 days, but if you have their paid membership its 60 days. I did sell ps5s with codes in them and can confirm the system doesnt show it as part of a bundle (like if the code was on the receipt). If it had the geek squad certified tape on it, it wasnt certified. It has to be in excellent condition as one of the prerequsites for that. Most best buys wont return something opened out of policy since they are losing money. My best guess is the customer service associate didnt know any better and then when it went to geek squad they probably over looked it or didnt care. There is a limit to how far items can be marked down. The tag should of said no code, because you can custom input whats missing. You could reprint tags incase you messed up, but now it wont let u change things (no idea if they change that back). It could of originally been a dot com order from the wearhouse, but doubtful. I just snagged a 450 2 in 1 chromebook clearenced down to 280 open box at 120 in satisfactory condition for my wife for reading and it looked brand new and in box. You can get some really insanse deals sometimes when things go on sale or clearenced out. In closing you can 100 percent cheat best buys system, especially with a gsp plan thats in store replacement (unless its a video game protected by copy right laws).
This was similar to me buying a refurbished God of War Ragnarok PS5 bundle for $450. The code wasn't even included in the box, wasn't an OEM Sony HDMI cable, and after 8 minutes of gameplay, the console would shutdown. Needless to say, i returned and got a full refund. For $50 more, I got a new console without the game.
Former Geek Squad Agent (2012-2015, 2016-2019), and those "geek squad certified" open boxes are just open boxes with the fancy GS cert sticker to get more money from people. Best Buy only really wanted to sell those GS plans, sell hardware replacement or upsell a repair to a new machine. No one cared to actually go and look at it. We were encourage to plug it in and see if it turns on. If it does, great Geek Squad Certified. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. lol
Open Box items ARE returned items. But all returns must be done within 14 days of purchase unless they have one of those extra memberships. So yes, open box products are used. But usually less than 30 days, that's why they consider them open box. And that's why it's a much better deal compared to other used items.. On rare occasion they do make their display units that I've been out on the floor open box. This is the worst thing I've seen them do because they will sometimes sell laptops that have screen burn
Bruh, OPEN BOX literally means it’s been used… lol, even if it was just used as a display unit it is still considered “used” thus “open box”… I worked for Best buy for 2 years.
Lol he was shocked the digital code was gone on an open product. The code is almost guaranteed 100% gone, always. They aren't refundable even if he didn't want it. That's what's unfortunate about a digital version in the box.
When you buy a used console they do not have to provide any digital codes. If it does it’ll be advertised as “including”. If it sad “Including” I would take it back to Best Buy and have them generate a MWII (2022) code. Yes, they can do it.
Yeah the difference here is this console was open box, not used lol. They are not the same thing. The description stated that the code was included and that only non essential accessories could be missing. And given the pricing ($50 savings), why would someone expect to lose out on the code AND get used items? Makes no sense. I’m not sure how people are defending Best Buy here.
Geek Squad most likely had nothing to do with this… since this is not a geek squad certified excellent condition open box. Most likely a sales advisor working at the front end just returned it and tossed the open box tag on it after the transaction.
What Best Buy currently offers with their "totaltech" subscription for 200$, you could essentially add protection plans to everything you purchase; this even includes a geek squad warranty where if something were to do go wrong with it, it could be replaced in store with a brand new one, at the catch being you have to paid for their yearly subscription in order to get protection plans automatically with no charge. With that in mind, the seller obviously was already past the return policy and possibly karen'ed themselves out of it with "why shouldn't you replace it or get what i paid for it" yada yada, the two likely cases are they got themselves a brand new PS5 by being pushy or they got their full refund back and geek squad checked if it's defective and worth selling back open box. Clearly though whoever was tasked with it didn't care enough to even clean it up and marked it as residue to get it even cheaper. From a former Geek Squad employee 👍
In BestBuy return policy, it mentioned that for the bundle that includes the extra item like this PS5 with a game, if the game has been used, they will refund the amount that after deduct the value of the game. However, some employee probably doesn’t check it when take return.
in my opinion complaining about the code being used on a open box console is abit of a reach. it's almost always a given that any code that comes with a console that's 2nd hand is always used unless stated otherwise. just my opinion and experience lol
This is an open box console that says it was supposed to have the code and would only be missing non essential accessories. And given the pricing (only $50 off), why would it have damages AND be missing the code (which is literally the reason people buy the cod bundle). I seriously can’t believe I’m seeing people with this take here lol
Bro, I worked at Best Buy forever, all the open boxes are returns for the most part. It could be used or not but it’s kinda common knowledge that you are buying something slightly used. If its a trade in like a laptop then they will disclose it’s used. Look at the iPhone and some laptops etc.
