    Great video Mr. Vickers. When I joined the Vermont NG in 1997 as a 19K we still had M3s in our armory and I got to fire them on a number of very enjoyable occasions, and I've been a fan of .45ACP ever since. They were replaced with M16A2 which I thought was weak sauce. The UMP is such a sweet design, and the shout-out to HK-PRO for the USC conversion was awesome!

    My recommendations on this - skip the left side rail, anything on it will just get in the way of using the charging handle. On chopping the barrel to go SBR, hand stops are one thing, but if you started out with a 16" barrel just don't cut it back as far. Another thing is putting those oversize flash hiders on which attach to the three lug muffler attachment. A little scorching is a stern warning about hand placement vs losing a finger. Didn't someone come out with a metal stock for those? Brugger & Thommet or was that just for the Mp5?
    The weapon fires slow enough on full auto that you can be light on the trigger and get singles, and has a fast enough cycle rate that on semi you can mag dump fairly quickly anyway. It is not much of a loss to have a UMP in semiauto only. At any real distance you practically have to aim it like an M203 anyway and it just does not have the mag capacity for real suppressive fire in an outdoor field environment.

    I'm currently doing the USC to UMP build and its been fun so far. Bought the rear UMP section, a UMP lower with stock. Sending it off to Tommybuilttactical for him to do the fuse job and a few other mods to make it as identical to the UMP as it can but in semi auto. Just filed my Form 1, so hoping the wait isn't took long. It will go great with my MP5. Another awesome video Larry

    • @mattwalters6834
      @mattwalters6834 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tyler Young the MP5 is more popular and handles better but from what I've seen the UMP is still pretty good.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Difference is negligible. MP5 has better recoil due to the delayed blowback which allows less mass in the bolt to keep the bolt closed with inerta for the brief moment when pressures are too high after firing, and slows down the speed of the bolt reciprocating which means less energy directed in a jolt from the bolt hitting the back of the receiver. However, in semi automatic you cannot fire fast enough to notice the difference. SMG are used in close quarters, if you are using full auto you actually can tolerate a little jump as it helps distribute the rounds better (harder to accidentally dump rounds through the same hole). The elephant in the room is that this is 45 while most MP5 are 9mm. Compare a UMP9 to a MP5 in 9mm and they are identical in handling for all practical purposes.
      UMP however surpasses the MP5 in the fire controls. It is ridiculously faster to reload a UMP over an MP5 because of the bolt catch. This also prevents the possibility of not knowing if your chamber is empty or not. MP5 lacks a bolt catch because the rollers are somewhat sensitive to dirt which can lock up the mechanism hard as opposed to straight blowback. No bolt catch means the gun is likely to stay closed more often than not.

    ... is it just me, or does he REALLY like to promote American designs? Mentioning that some Russians prefer the AR15/M4 style platform instead of the AK while many Americans similarly prefer AK over AR/MR. UMP being the modern M3, I assume just because it's a simplified .45 ACP SMG. Like saying the FNP45 is the modern day M1911A1 just because it's a pistol that fires .45 ACP. Just to add some more, the fact that those guys who produce the M1918A3 semi auto only closed-bolt BAR made a more compact version called the HCAR if memory serves that has loads of rails for customization, he said they 'took a page from the AR boo and applied it to the BAR'.
    He was good enough to address that the M16 design copied its dust cover from the STG44 design, but thought it prudent to mention that the M16/AR flips the dust cover DOWN, while the STG flips it UP. Pretty minute point to bring up... There's also a lot of pro-German talk as well. Calling the Hi Power a 'German pistol' or a 'German gun' even though it's Belgian. Saying he believes the AK47 was HEAVILY influenced by the STG in spite of them having barely any internal similarities, even externally very different designs such as the nature of inserting the magazine, nature of releasing the mag, seperate safety/fire select switches on STG while AK has a single switch, opposite sides of rifle for the bolt handle, steel foregrip instead of wooden, it's also a much lighter design, with the later AKM being even more light. I won't even go into the extreme differences in the disassembly.
    I've enjoyed the vids so far, but I'm starting to see some biased opinions cropping up, and I don't exactly agree with em. No, I'm not ex-Special Forces or professionally trained on firearms handling/maintenance. Just your garden variety gun owner and firearm aficionado. Just having a hard time stomaching this stuff. Before anyone pops up and says "Just stop watching his vids then", I know, chances are you won't see many more of my comments uglying up Vicker's Tactical vid's comment sections. Perhaps it's just because I'm drunk, perhaps my inebriation makes me feel like arguing, but from experience I find that drunk words often stem from sober thoughts. If I come to read this while sober, I don't think my opinion will be much changed. Probably also thinks that John Cantius Garand had no Canadian roots whatsoever, meaning the M1 Rifle and M14 are purely and entirely American designs from buttplate to front sight.

    • @forrest225
      @forrest225 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NormanMatchem Well, the heart of the STG and the AK, the gas system, function identically.
      The FNP/X may be produced in the USA, but FNH is actually a Belgian company, not German as you mention.
      Many different modern carbines and rifles are AR inspired. The AR has far more aftermarket support and is much easier to customize or custom build than any other firearm. It's no accident that many new firearms are compatible with AR furniture.
      On the hi-power, are you referring to the WWII German pistols video? If so, he clearly explains that the hi-power plant was captured by German forces, after which the Germans continued production in the original facilities. If you are referring to the breakdown video, he also mentions that they were produced in Belgium by FNH.
      At the end of the day, he is covering popular guns the he likes. I wouldn't try to read into it any further than that.

    • @NormanMatchem
      @NormanMatchem 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      forrest225
      You're basing AK/STG similarities on the gas piston... really? That's not heavy influence. They don't even have the same action; rotating bolt vs tilting bolt. FN is indeed Belgian, did I call it German? I'm familiar enough with Fabrique Nationale to know it's Belgian, if I did indeed call it German, it must have been a slip of my drunk tongue.
      I've got a Hi Power made in Nazi Occupied Belgium in fact, and it has the Waffenamp things, complete with really tiny swastikas, but that doesn't make it a German pistol; it's Belgian.

      Look at what AKs have become. They borrow heavily from western design and sometimes use American made parts. Like the TWS Dog Leg Rail cover. Or the adjustable gas piston.
      The AR is just a better weapon system hands down.

      NormanMatchem dude. The AK borrowed heavily off the M1 Garand and StG. If you disagree, you’re just a blind dumbass.
      Kalashnikov denied it for a long time. And in his older age, admitted he copied and borrowed designs.
      There’s no way he just randomly came up with the idea all by himself as many would like to think.

      The AR has certain issues. On full auto it just doesn't work as well as piston guns, also you cant have it in really short barrels at the same reliability as a piston gun with a really short barrel.
      AK borrowed sure, at that point everybody did. But it isn't a copy from either. AK is its own thing in every regard that matters. Americans also captured STG's and had M1 Garand and yet came up with the obsolete M14, which wasn't obsolete only because of its silly caliber but also from the pure design point of view. At the time of its adoption the AK was the BEST assault rifle in the world, surpassing the STG in every category and leaving FAL's G3's and M14's in the dust, simply because of the caliber.
      Then the AR came into existence. Initially it was a troubled existence, but nowadays, I'd agree the AR overall especially because f its ergonomics and weight is the best Assault rifle in the world. The problem with the AR is, it still needs a professional soldier to be an effective system. Dealing with jams and blockages alone takes a nice number of well executed training sessions/classes to learn and get proficient in dealing with such issues. On an AK, you just cycle the action and check the chamber and you will resolve 99.99% of jams or stoppages. Also AR's pretty much suck in full auto, which is why even the USMC is going with a piston gun, and funnily enough they're trying to get their hands on as many 416's as they can lol, even their DMR is going to be a 416 variant lol, which is kind of silly cause I think a DI gun is more accurate then a piston gun, but apparently the USMC doesn't like DI guns any more and is taking every chance they get to grab more piston 416's.
      So honestly it really depends on what you want your Assault rifles to do, you want them to be as light weight as possible and accurate and reliable in semi-auto and maybe some burst's occasionally, go with a DI AR gun.
      But if you want it to be acceptably accurate and extremely reliable on full auto mag dumps (suppression fire in CQC or from prone) you need a piston. And honestly the AK does it really well also.
      Point here being, there is ALWAYS a trade off.

    Mr. Vickers, I know you've stated that you're not much for shotguns. I wouldn't mind seeing a video comparing a hk sub-gun vs. benelli m4 for cqb/home defense or various scenarios where targets are close and escape and evasion are impractical.

      Easy - the HK has a 30 rd magazine and the Benelli hold 8 rounds. It really all comes down to that. I know which one I would chose

      10mm is kind of pointless in a SMG. The point of a SMG is that it is cheap to loadup and can be silenced easily. If you need more power than a subcaliber, grab a rifle. 5.56 is a lot more compact and lighter than 10mm and a lot more powerful.
      10mm is only good on semi auto handguns with a long barrel (otherwise it is just a glorified 40S&W), but most handguns are moving away from large size and more to compact and subcompact frames due to conceal carry.

    The UMP is a huge disappointment after the success of the MP5. I shot a 10mm version of the MP5 years ago and it was far easier to control than the UMP in .45. I’d rather shoot the M3 than the UMP.

      The UMP was never meant to replace the obviously far better MP5. It's made for US Law Enforcement with limited funding.
