      Roy Rodriguez well that is because M3 Grease gun was made because it was cheap to produce . Thompson was high-quality and never jammed or malfunctioned because it used fine materials and was expensive and took very long to produce so they found out that they have to make a cheaper firearm to replace it .

    That's actually right. I was in around that time, in the late 80's, attached to the HHC of a mechanized infantry brigade, so we had a couple of armor battalions. Our mechanics were issued those things, I think the armor guys had them, too. We had a few of those in our arms room. I was there when the first M1 tanks were issued, as well as the first HUMVee's. I didn't like it, we LOVED our old Ford M151, and didn't want to retire it. Boy, does that make me feel old.....

    Having been an Armored Crewman on the M60A1/A3 tanks, I got to play with the M3A1 Greasegun a LOT and enjoyed doing so as well.
    A decent rate of fire but required effort to keep it on target during a longer string of fire.
    Some of the "lighter" troops didn't have enough sand in their pockets to keep from being rattled around from the (to me, anyway) modest recoil impulses. But with a little training and trigger time it became easier to squeeze off one, two, three or more short bursts of ammo.
    That was a necessity, too, since that stick mag would run out of Pain Pills PDQ if you held the trigger back.
    But it was fun! YEE HAW!
    I miss those days, outside of being beat to crap from the hard work associated with being a Tanker.
    EVERYONE from the TC (Tank Commander) to the Driver, Loader and Gunner needed to work together to keep our mounts up and running in the field.
    There was no such thing as driving until a maintenance facility and asking them to fix whatever was broken. Crewmen did the bulk of the maintenance. From track component replacements to replacing an entire engine/transmission "Pack" in the field.
    That took the use of an M88 Recovery vehicle which was another tank minus the turret and main gun, but had a rig to hoist off the back deck and then the engine pack for replacement.
    NOT fun at ALL! Oh, and EXTREMELY dirty work. LOL
    Good days, Yessiree!

    Interesting that the Americans basically built their version of the humble Sten to replace the more fancy Tommy gun

    • @Hellhound23691
      @Hellhound23691 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +liar liarliar The Thompson was to damned expensive and complicated. Great gun, but with an army three million strong you need something easy to manufacture for the regular infantry. Special troops, American and British, still used Thompsons up until Korea and I think that quite a few Americans traded or stole Thompsons from ARVN in Vietnam.

    • @liarliarliar6495
      @liarliarliar6495 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Microzombie I think comparing a Thompson to an M3 or a Sten, is rather like comparing a Cadillac to a Model T Ford. You'd rather have the Cadillac, but far more people were able to drive the Model T because it was far less expensive. When you're in a war of survival (as opposed to a limited war for imperial dominance) it is imperative to mobilise your resources more effectively than your enemy. This means your equipment has to do the job for the least resources, and this is why the Sten/M3 is a better military design than the Thompson. It's also the reason why the Sten in particular, was copied by everyone, including the Germans (who were no slouches at designing fancy machine guns!).

    • @Hellhound23691
      @Hellhound23691 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +liar liarliar We can agree that the Thompson is a hell of a lot more sexy than the other SMGs of World War II right?

    • @liarliarliar6495
      @liarliarliar6495 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Microzombie I think the Tommy gun is something of an oddity in that it is it built like a finely wrought sporting gun, yet it is a machine gun and thus, by it's very nature can be counted among the most brutal killing machines ever devised. Perhaps machine guns should look brutal and functional, so we don't forget what they are for.

    • @Hellhound23691

    The UMP is a very fine gun and one of my favorites. One thing to touch on though is that the cost to acquire a UMP is in the $10-20,000 range, where as a new M3 grease gun cost $15 to produce in '43 which is $206 today. This means that for the cost of one UMP at $10,000 (cheap) you could arm 50 or so soldiers with grease guns. Assuming training and experiance are equal, the advantages that the UMP offers it doesn't make a 1v50 scenario close to possible. Even a 1v2 scenario would be based on luck. If H&K were to make an affordable UMP they would essentially end up with an M3. This is why they are bought in small numbers by special forces and police units, and not armies. Just food for thought, sorry for the rant, safe shooting everyone.

In the capital it's mostly tourists as well, not only from 2nd or 3rd world countries. But in the 2nd biggest town there are a lot of people from muslim countries from north africa and middle east, also recently african countries like Somalia, Eritrea. Also most of these immigrants are male, that's a fact as well. If the majority of them would be women, well, that wouldn't be so bad :D. But yeah each european country is different.

    I understand the problems with the M3, but I don't understand how the M3A1 would be an improvement. Wouldn't reaching *into* the bolt just be a good way to cook your fingers?

    • @imbored742
      @imbored742 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Bullwinkle Moose In Canada? Suppressors are a no-go, 100% prohibited for civilians, only available to LE and Mil. SBRs on the other hand are a bit easier to come by, the barrel length restrictions for longarms only apply to centrefire semi-automatics, and they change the gun from being non-restricted (only requires a basic licence, no registration) to being restricted (requires an extra endorsement on your licence and registration, can only be used on approved ranges). Transfers for restricted firearms are generally quite quick, and there are no transfer fees.
      Since the barrel length restrictions only apply to centrefire semi-automatics it's actually quite easy to get manual action firearms that would be SBRs or SBSs in the US. For example, 12" barreled pump action shotguns are quite popular for wilderness defense.

      I own a Tavor in Canada. Its non restricted, yet ar 15's can only be used at ranges, and must be locked during transport with ammo separate, as well as need a special license. Figure that out.
