@@triggerbarPhD I really like the new 100gr ELD-VT for shooting distance. It mimics 6mm ARC, actually exceeds it in the first 400-500yds. I've only shot it from 700-1000yds.
Awww yea...the 6.5 Grendel! Been whacking the deer with this caliber for years now... man what an awesome deer cartridge! Have number of videos out on my 6.5 Grendel deer rifle, but basically it's an Aero receive setup with a Saxon Gunner profile 16" barrel. I had it cerekote foliage green to match some Magpul foliage green furniture I had laying around. LaRue MBT-2S trigger and the Strike Eagle 1-8 LPVO. Have taken deer out to 200 yards and as close as 35 yards using Hornady Custom 123gr SST. I've considered putting together a 12.5" just because. Man it looked cold out there! Great video brother...thanks for sharing your 6.5 Grendel setup with us. Hope you're having a great weekend.
Thanks Chris, I need to go back into your videos and watch some of those, that's great!! I have the Geissle SSE/2 trigger in here and that's the last place I put it and have gone with Larue MBT-2s ever since, hahahaha. Yah this was actually filmed in January when we all had the cold snap...It was like 27 degrees and it was my third video hahahha, you know how that goes.
I’ve been seeing a lot of videos about the 65 and I’m thinking Of taking my 556 barrel out and paired up with a crossfire ll i’m trying to see if this is an improvement for a dedicated long range rifle
I bought some! I was so excited to see that come out, I think that is going to make a big difference in getting these prices down!! It's on my list of things to test in my grendel, I'll get there. Let me know if you try it out and how it goes!!
My Winter project from 2023 . Was a 6.5 Grendel with a BCA 20" barrel. And a side charger upper receiver. I put a CMG 3.5 # trigger. I shot the initial grouping and it was more than acceptable accuracy with Wolf steel case. I bought some Hornady black but haven't grouped it yet.
Love the round itself. I have three bolt action rifles (16, 20, 26.5) and half a dozen or more ARs chambered for it (11.5 to 24 inch). Nice presentation.
Love my grendel. Can load 85 gr bullets up to 140 gr reliable performance. 95 to 110 gr Maker Trex are great for hunting but speer 140gr bonded or Barnes Tsx or Ttsx are also great within 300 yards. You can shoot past that but I'm not talented enough yet.
I’ve loaded a bunch of the tax and TTSX and agree, that’s more 300 yards and in to get to e velocities needed. And that’s also applies to me, I’m not comfortable out past 400 yards for a shot at this point. My longest kill has been 275 yards.
I use this round in a 14.5” barrel AR to thermal hunt. It’s a pretty good round, but is much better if you hand load up to higher pressure and run a stronger bolt to hold together. I’ve got several videos on my channel hunting with it.
All the cons you listed are negligible. Buy a custom upper with match grade barrel. It is a workhorse, and will drive tacks while capable of taking anything in Florida and the South East. Stellar option for farm work and has issues with recoil. I cannot shoot my 30-06 anymore due to my neck and back injury. The Grendel feels like a kids gun in regards to recoil. I didn’t realize I could track my shot looking through my scope. All the firearms I used growing up kicked the piss out of me. These rounds like the Nosler Ballistic Tip are a one shot drop. And where I work, we get a it of 6.5 Grendel brass made by Starline , 6.5 bullets made by everyone , can use small rifle primers(which is huge and there are plenty of that right now, just no large rifle and magnum rifle), and powder for it is extremely diverse. Just make sure you get a quality upper, as that is your rifle’s accuracy. You don’t have to spend much to get a decent lower receiver, and even Anderson MFG or Aero precision (both complete crap), will work(if you have a wedge to create a solid base that is required for accuracy.). I know it does these big thick hide boar hogs enjoyably well.
Aero Precision is far from crap, even Anderson has reviewers proving their lower is closer to MILSPEC than a Centurion CM4. I haven't used an Anderson yet, I've had both Centurion (Centurion MKXII MOD 1 SPR) It functions flawlessly, I've also built multiple Aero Precision M4E1 lower based rifles and they've all been perfect, even with mismatched uppers. The Foxtrot Mike 16" 9mm upper states expressly to NOT use any Anderson lower with their upper or it will void their warranty. Someone seems to not care for them. I see Anderson lowers available for dirt cheap all the time, even 80%ers I may grab one up just to complete one and test it out. People talk plenty of smack about the S&W M&P15 Sport II as a "crappy budget rifle" I was gifted one by my Mother after my Dad passed on special at Cabela's for $619. Personally, if that's discounted pricing I don't call that "budget" and it performs amazing after plenty of ammunition through it and I seem to have gotten a fluke as my 1:9 heavy barreled M&P is a 1/4MOA shooter dead on the bullseye at 100 yards, 3 shot groups, with 55grain NATO ball ammunition. I expect the same or similar from 62grain green tip. Much heavier and it may not stabilize them but I will try some 77grain OTM through it to test its performance later on.
If you call Aero Precision crap, your opinion is simply not to be trusted. They make solid products for fair prices, and because of the latter people like to poop on them. It's unfounded, their tolerances are top notch.
6.5 Grendel is by far the best all around cartridge as far as capabilities you can put in an ar15. Been shooting it for over a decade now. Only downside is local ammo availability. Academy only carries the 123gn bthp eld and sst and maybe now the v-match. But still loads of ammo online. I guess the 6mm arc would be a nice contender if more loadings would come out for it but as for now the arc doesn’t have many options outside of the couple Hornady loads.
It’s a fun round. Lots of other options now with the 6 max and 6 arc. But the 6.5 is a great spot for a good bc bullet and very popular because of the creedmoor. I think you’d enjoy it too!
Yah it’s one of many that are trying to displace the 556, 6 arc probably has a better chance but likely won’t. But are fun to reload and shoot. Thanks!
Was out to the range with my CZ527 W 16" barrel, hitting steel gongs @ 710 yds. It's a superlative round with very little recoil for its performance. With my AR chassis hits @ 549 yds were easily followed up, as long as I had ammo in the mag.
I shoot 780-900yds with my 12” Grendel regularly on 2 MOA targets. Suppressed, very fun little package. I also have basically all the other barrel lengths except for 28” and 20”. I even have 10.5” and 8.5”.
I have a 20" AR with a 1:8 5r barrel, and it puts them in there with just irons . I put an Acog on it and it's my favorite AR now . 6.5 is a beast out past 300yards .
That's awesome, I love mine it's just a fantastic shooter combining higher power than 556 with ability to shoot longer range! Hard to beat. Have you had issues with larger mags (+20 rounds)?
@triggerbarPhD I only use the c products dura mags in 10 and 26 rounds and have no issues at all SG ammo sells them for like 17 bucks . I have two of the old zhang multi mags, and they work too, but the fitment is super tight, and fast mag changes aren't a thing with those .
I almost switched out a couple uppers to this caliber. That was when steel was cheap. Glad I didn't do that. But I still like the cartridge. Thanks t b p!
PSA has brass case AAC 6.5 grendel now for the same prices that I was finding the Wolf steel case in. 70c/rd is pretty good for Grendel. And to top it off they've got it in 123gr FMJ, bthp, and black tip (SST) all for 70-75c/rd.
@@triggerbarPhD Hornady 120 gr ELDM does .49 groups and Hornady 129 gr Interlock do .6 groups for me in my BCA upper . Best powder was H4895 with H335 a close second .
I’ve been able to get Hornady 100gr ELD-VT from Midway for $17.99/box and I use my Scheel’s and Cabella’s points to basically get free ammo every time I get gift cards or Cabella’s points. 100gr ELD-VT is my new favorite load from them, as it flies like a 6mm AR/ARC. My main go-to for many years has been the 123gr ELD-M, which replaced the 123gr A-MAX.
Nice. I have been always interested in the Grendel but never pulled the trigger. But now I think the 6 Max makes the most sense, given that it only needs a simple barrel swap and 350 Legend mags
@@triggerbarPhD how do you feel reloading for it. On the one hand it’s that precision thing that screems hand weight powder. But then it’s a semi auto screeming high number of rounds. On my .308 Win the Lee Powder Measure gets me about 0.3 grain spread in the turret, so kinda good enough

When it first came out, I was excited about it and that kinda died off for me. Whats between 5.56 and .308 for me is 300BO 😂 Thanks for sharing Brother!
I think it's a great little round, I've seen it shoot very accurately in small action bolt rifles. Then again, you seem to get some groups with the steel case. I still haven't warmed up to the AR platform, but no doubt fun projects. My reloading mind would be thinking, the rifle is ejecting five dollar bills, and I'm loosing a bunch of them, lol.
Yah it can be very accurate in a bolt action. This was one of those, “I can just buy and upper and have a 556 and grendel gun” and then I just bought a lower. Lol. If you buy uppers, they grow lowers…
I’ve been loading for it since 2009 with Lapua brass, using a brass-catcher in the AR-15. Not really an issue. Brass lasts forever, unlike my .260 Rem or others.
I considered the 6.5 Grendel when I got the 300 BO upper for deer. Now I am considering the 350 legend upper. Seems like a much more capable round for deer.🤷♂
Yes for sure 350 legend would be a better deer round. But not out at distance. It has a very low BC. So it comes down to where you are hunting as to which cartridge is better. Thanks for your thoughts!
I got this several years ago but glad the 6 arc is coming! Only a barrel swap away from grendel. Still I think more people will prefer heavier for hunting.
Ammo availability is far better than most people think. It just went up to 128 factory loads for 2025. Hornady just added a 90gr CX bullet.

300bo is absolutely trash in comparison to grendel. The only thing 300bo does well is quiet, it fails in basically every single other metric.
@PineyJustice short and quiet. But ballistically 6.5 Grendel is better.
C Products makes good Grendel specific magazines.
Thanks! I’ll have to check those out!!
I think it would be good on hogs. I think they use them in Texas.
Agreed, that’s a great use case for them!!
We do! Works great!
@@triggerbarPhD My hunting is 150 yds or less, usually 50 to 100...🤷♂
@@Disastrous.Affect yah 350 legend makes more sense.
It's actually a 7.62x39 case with the shoulders blown out and NECKED DOWN to 6.5
Nope. It was based off the .220 Russian case. You can make it the way you described but that's not the pedigree of the case.
Should have went 6mm arc.
I got this several years ago but glad the 6 arc is coming! Only a barrel swap away from grendel. Still I think more people will prefer heavier for hunting.
@triggerbarPhD I don't disagree
yea. that wolf ammo is garbage. hornady sst 123gr has over 1000lb'ft@400yds and 1900fps
Yah that’s a bit more powerful!
