I am a woman farmer, homemaker who is over 50. I have long hair so I can braid it or throw it up in a ponytail.. If I had a "hairstyle" I think I would be a sweaty disaster while working...love the blow-dryer test❤
I love that you figured out what works best for you! That's SUPER important! Glad you liked the blowdryer test! It was fun making it! Always love bringing the fur family into it!
Love your dogs!
Good info.
@@justinhickoxthank you, I just wish on the down time I could make it look sexy lol.. but at least I kick fanny getting my work done.. Thank you for the reply, Take Care 🙏❤️🙏
Btw this reply was meant to be to @lisacarden1309. Don’t know how it got misnomed 🤦♀️
Yes. I am sure I could get a “hairstyle” that is more flattering to me. But, as just an active woman I find my boring shoulder length, no layers, no fringe (bangs) hair works in a practical manner 70% of the time. (lol not even a farmer……I just want to be able to tie my hair up so it doesn’t get in my eyes, get sweaty, look messy at the gym, while gardening, while doing hobbies, doing housework, just living). Yes…..I know I could look better……..but I can’t fathom how to make a “hairstyle” work in my life. I have tried in the past. And failed lol. I keep watching these vids to see if the advice will work for me. I will keep watching. I do like to see others transformed.
All power to those who can do it all AND look great with a “hairstyle”.
I think a farm girl over 50 could rock a good bob…
I hope this isn't a crazy question, I have to wear glasses. Every couple of years, I have to deal with choosing new glasses. I think glasses and hairstyles both work together. So would it be possible to have a Tuesday with some ideas about glasses to go with these face shaped tips?
Not a crazy question at all!!! That’s a fantastic idea! Frames and hair TOTALLY go together. I’ll have to look into that all more and put together a video on that!!
@@justinhickox Oh, that would be amazing and very helpful!
@@justinhickox Yes, another glasses wearer here, though when indoors I go without. Plus I have a 'fivehead' and need bangs.
I would love that, glasses and hair are such a pain! I can't wear hair tucked behind my ears. Can't wear a headband. Help!
This is a very good idea and something I have thought about every time I go to the hairdressers, as I want to make sure the haircut is going to look fitting with the shape of the glasses but obviously when they cut your hair they ask you to remove them so I always wondered if the hairstylist is taking into consideration the shape of the glasses!
Can you do some content on curly hair. Best cuts for curl patterns, how to work with your stylist to find best cut, any tips! So many stylist don’t know how to work with curly hair- help!
The drawings to illustrate face shapes are very helpful ~ thank you! And you’re right, they keep you from getting distracted by personal details.
Thank you! Glad I could help! I totally agree. I actually spent about 5 hours photoshopping different bob haircuts on peoples faces then realized there was too much "other" stuff that was distracting from really being able to see what role the shape of the bob was playing.
This is the best explanation of hair shape I’ve seen! It’s just what I need, to explain to my hairdresser what shape I’m going for and why. Many thanks Justin.❣️
That’s awesome! I’m so glad it helped. I really appreciate that feedback. Are you gonna go for a bob shape?
Another helpful video! It is so refreshing to be given great content without a sales pitch! Is is odd however that I enjoy your videos so much due to having alopecia and not having hair at all! You help me decide what wigs are best for me.
This video is perfect for any woman entering a salon. If your stylist can’t explain exactly what Justin has said here, then perhaps you should consider going to a different stylist.
What Justin is explaining are all basic truths. And unless you are “married” to a specific hairstyle please have this discussion with your hairstylist. I owned a salon for 10 years, in Chicago. I found that women who refuse to even consider changing their hairstyle usually had that hairstyle during the happiest times in their life…even if it was 30 years ago. If that’s the case, I would gently offer a new hair style, but in the end I would give them the hairstyle that insured they would leave with a smile.
Really enjoy your videos, Justin! Brings back such memories! I loved 99% of my clients, and learned so much from the other 1%.
Always love your posts. I would love a video on older hair ( silver) that has gone coarse and its impossible to style. It just never looks sleek and looks unkempt and wild all the time😢.I have an oval face
Omg yessss...don't go short...I look like a pot scourer when I wake up !!!
Clear and easy to understand. I appreciated your emphasis that your tips were not JUST about balancing "flaws" but also about deciding upon one's favorite features and playing them up. I also appreciated your description of bang varieties because I usually think of bangs as the forehead fringe variety. Now I understand why my stylists need more specific info from me.
I hate that face shapes are seen as flaws, like too round here, too square here, too wide, too thin. No, get whatever haircut you want and why should it matter if you enunciate certain parts of your face?
The "what do I like about my face shape" is so important. There are women with really square and sharp jawlines that look AMAZING with the sharp bob at chin level. It is bold and striking to highlight a part of the face that we might feel like we need to minimize because it's so different from the "standard". These rules are great to understand so you can know how to use them to highlight your favorite features. But definitely don't assume from these general rules that all square faces can't pull off a blunt bob. People have absolutely pulled it off.
I keep asking for this! Ty for validating my choice.
Hi Justin, have you covered hairstyles that look good both wavy/curly and straight, for us ladies over 50 with textured hair?
The key is wear it how you like it- forget what others think
I never fail to learn from your videos! I cut my own hair using professional shears, etc! Have been doing this for almost 20 years. Went from a pixie (easy to cut) to a bob. I am going to modify the cut next time I trim it. My is a semi square (ha). Normally have had strong bangs but have slowly moved to combing off to the side and tapering to the sides. If I lived in your area, I would definitely be your customer. Thank you so much. Oh…just saw the comment about glasses and cuts. Look forward to you addressing this! 🤓
How do you cut your own hair in a bob?
Bought this dryer awhile ago & it is truly exactly what it says!!! Love it!!! All your recommendations end up being great! Thanks for sharing so much good info from your long experience with
us !!!! Love your videos !
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate that. And I agree, that dryer has been fantastic for us, I’m so glad you like it as well.
First time I didn’t skip past a sponsored ad - that was a brilliant demo! Also, great hair info as always too
The blow dryer test was EPIC!!!…you guys think of everything!!!!🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏🎤🎤🎤
This was so helpful! Using the illustrations to show face shape is so much easier to understand- usually when real faces are shown as examples of face shape I’m unable to “see” what they’re talking about. I loved seeing how Bob and bang lengths and styles alters the fullness/shortens the facial features.
Very helpful video.
Am still knocked out by last weeks video though. That bob on Suzy was PERFECTION and exactly what I've been wanting for years. No wonder you won hands down.
Just to mention, your last few videos in that living room have been so dark it's hard to see you.
I think the shape of your head (side profile) also plays a role on what style suits you best.
This video popped up just in time as I'm getting my hair cut into a bob in an hour! Thank you, Justin!
Awesome! Did it make sense for you?
You both should thank Google, for listening your phone 😃😃😃
This video was very informative. Can you do a video for curly bobs? I have a square face and thick hair that went very curly through menopause. I have a slightly graduated neck length bob but the curls are challenging. A video for curly bobs would really help!
Heart shape face and I wear glasses.the shoulder length Bob and less fullness not only got me numerous compliments but it fit in perfectly with wearing glasses. My hairstylist is amazing!
This East Coast Mom, thinks this video was so informative and so well explained!!!…thank you!…great tips!…much love and appreciation!!!…say hi to Dionna, from her East Coast Mom!!!…#OGCommunityRockstar!!!!…love you guys!💜💜💜💜💜💜
I have a rectangle face, I think.😕 I thought it was oval but looking at people with oval faces something was just not looking accurate. It's very confusing. I realised it was not oval because I ask people in my family and they don't give a straight answer. Or they just don't care. 😆 Now I know how to style my hair. As you said "trying to fit it into the norm." Thanks for this.
Starting from 2:19, Face Shape #1 Round 🤗✨
Best informational video I've ever encountered! Im a heart shape/diamond & will put your tips to use. Thank you so much😊 & many blessings.
Hi Justin! Great video, one of my favorites from you...COULD YOU MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT FACES HAPES + HAIR OF THE FACE HAIRSTYLES? So many women put their hair up in a ponytail or in an updo for more casual days and how to do it in a most flattering way would be so helpful! Thanks for considering!
This was the best video that brings a great deal of clarity to face shape. Thank you.
I'm going to have to watch this again! So much information! I'm an oval shape and I do try a lot of different styles because I kind of get bored with my hair! LOL! My next appointment is in August, but I think I'm going to move it up a few weeks! Thus is going to be fun! 😊❤
Thank you! I’m glad this could help. If you’re more of an oval face shape, you really can’t do a lot. Try and think less about overall face shape and more about specific features of your face that you either want to draw attention away from or bring attention to. Because you can wear so many different shapes, doing that will ensure that whatever shape it is the best shape for you. I hope that makes sense.
@@justinhickox Yes, I will do that! I also have to work with the "glasses" issue! It's insane! And thank you for making this so much fun!
Really good advice from a pro on the bob. I am definitely getting side bangs cut this week to balance my oval face. Too much weight on bottom! Thanks so much!
The Bob has always been my go to hairstyle for almost my whole life. I have a roundish face and I ve tried to get exactly what you are describing. But difficult to get a stylist to cut what I want. They usually make it very square looking which I don’t like.
@Jamesrolls726my hair right now is medium length and layered. I’m very happy with this haircut. I don’t like short hair on me.
Topic idea: SENSORY issues. I am a Special Education teacher and hair and sensory needs are a topic that comes up. I discovered that I also have sensory issues...and what "looks" good on me, does not always "feel" good TO me. Example: I look better in bangs, but can't stand the feel of hair on my forehead. I look better in shoulder length hair, but can't stand the "feel" of hair on my neck (I have to go longer or shorter). I am over 50, and honestly, sensory issues and hair styles have always been a dilemma. Last example: my son also has sensory issues and can't stand the feel of really short hair (even though it looks good on him); he would cry when a stylist cut his hair too short due to sensory issues.
Elise, consider taking olive leaf capsules or tonic for a few months to see if that helps shake these lingering colds. My husband suffers badly from sinus issues and has been taking olive leaf for years. It has helped so much, also he doesn't get colds and flu anywhere near as much as he used to.
Best video I’ve seen on explaining hair style
for face shapes! Thank you ❤
I so wish I could do as you suggest! I have only ever managed to "tolerate" a side parting when I had a pixie cut... as soon as it grows any longer I naturally default to a middle parting with a straight & choppy fringe... I have a roundish face with a bob below my ears & too thick to wear as one layer... I really dislike any layers that 'flick' into my face... So basically I must be my hairdressers nightmare! I also have quite a low hairline at the nape of my neck... therefore I ask for it to be cut as short as possible to stop it flicking up as it grows! I love listening to all your advice ♥ you're an inspiration.
Bob Cut just below my ears. Can’t manage pixie cuts @ all! Hair just sticks up! 😂
For the round face i liked the short bob with bangs. Not everyone wants to hide their face shape. Im not fat but i still have a round face. It makes me look 35 but i am 56.
Your pups are adorable and both have great hair! Lol. My dog is going to love the blow dryer test. I think I have had every face shape depending on weight or life cycle. 😊 The older I get the more I want to emphasize my eyes and cheek bones. What about a shorter bob, above the chin, side swept and tucked behind one ear? What face shape does that style suit the best? Thank you!
Yes they are! Our pups had a GREAT time! Lol. Those bobs can work great. It really depends on where the volume sits since the length is sitting directly at the cheek area. Mainly you just want to be sure to have the volume up towards the temple area and tapered in toward the bottom. That will help you lift those cheekbones. Also, if your face is feeling narrow around the jaw and broad around the cheek bones, a length above the chin can accentuate that.
Very good info. Round face here. I know you're right, but I so love the bob you say to avoid and so dislike the bob you recommend. Boohoo for me. :(
Hairdresser need to stop out the same haircut on everyone the do! Coming from retired stylist for over 40 years!
Agreed. Each client is an individual and deserves an individual style.
Hi Justin. Thank you for this video. It will help me spend wisely on a cut that will flatter my features. I appreciate the time you put into your videos and I even enjoyed your commercial! Happy New Year!
I have a round face with thin, fine hair. I prefer a blunt lob. I think it looks best on me. Once I start messing with layers, my hair get's thinner. So these suggestions depend on your hair texture as well.
True, but I have a roundish face too and very thick and coarse hair. Yet I prefer a no-layers, blunt cut with a short blunt fringe, I don’t care if it enlarges my face, those side swept and layered cuts aren’t for me and I don’t like the look of them. At the end of the day everyone should just have the haircut that makes them feel better:)
I splurged on the Laifen last November when you recommended it.
I really like it. So powerful but yet not super hot as it doesn't need all that damaging heat because it works on air movement. And it isn't super noisy either. Much quieter than my previous hair dryer.
Thank you so much for trusting me! I really appreciate that. I’m so glad you’re loving the dryer as much as we are. I totally agree about the heat, that’s a big deal on damage as well.
As always great advice. I went straight out after this and had a cut. I still don't think they angled the concave enough as I am also wanting to grow it out. Can you please do a video about the messy middle of growing out short to long hair? What do you do with hair that is sitting on and just below the shoulders.
Hmm... You basically said no one should have straight across bangs... But straight across bangs are a fashion statement that many people like to wear as a form of self expression... Can't agree with the no bangs conclusion.
I find that a blunt bang can actually help balance a long, thin face and give more worth at the mid face depending on the rest of the cut. But ok, no bangs for anyone because he doesn't like them lol
Blunt bangs always give a confident look and are always beautiful. His so called expert suggestions are his own likes and dislikes. Woman wearing straight bangs always looks prominent and elegant every where.
Is the expression for them that they wish to look like a young boy?
He literally said everybody should make a decision that’s best for themselves. You’re one of those people who complain just because they like to complain.
He literally said everybody should make a decision that’s best for themselves. You’re one of those people who complain just because they like to complain.
THis made perfect sense! Thank you for a simple but in-depth explanation of the perfect cut: a bob! NOW we know! Thanks!!!
Everyone needs to get the Laifen especially now while it's on sale! As I have told you before, I bought my son one and he loved it so much, I bought myself one! Thanks JH for another helpful and fun video!❤
Here is my guy!!!…just started watching!…can’t wait to see this!💜
Great and helpful video, Justin! I like the idea of bangs; however, with natural curl, the sideswept style doesn't seem overly possible (curly hair having a mind of its own 😅). Am I missing something?
Your dogs are adorable and I loved seeing them!
Great question. I wish Justin would address the very different challenges of working with curly hair. Especially when many of us don’t want to blow it straight.
@tobywinter1 maybe if we keep bringing it up, he will! 😅
Wow...
Haven't had my hair cut in years, no joke.
I hate sitting infront of a mirror but getting my hair cut into a bob in the morning...
Great time for this this video..😁💇♀️❤
Thanks as always, loved the hair dryer challenge. Your doggies are so well behaved 💕
I’m excited I just received my new blow dryer and can’t wait to use it for my perfect bob! Used your link for the prime day rate! Thanks so much!
😂 I totally rocked a Beatles cut in the late 90’s. Probably so wrong for my face shape, but I think all that highschool attitude helped pull it off in a personality way. Now that I care about my hairstyle working for my face shape & adding to my style, I’d never go back to the bowl cut Bob. Ah, photos from the past & lessons learned 😁
Haha! We’ve ALL been there. I had a long ponytail for a couple years before high school because I thought I was Steven Segal! Lmao!!! It’s different when we’re in our teens and twenties though. You can pull off things much easier then.
@@justinhickox agreed. 😆 nice to look back and laugh.
I was also told middle age and older ladies shouldn't have long hair and I really struggle with the fear of people thinking I'm trying to look younger. I'm certain you've covered this, but I must ask.
Baloney! You do what makes you feel good and works for you ❤
I’m a mature woman with long hair. On a weekly basis, strangers tell me how much they love my hair. The usual compliment is that it looks so elegant. I love that it’s so versatile, from very dressy to ponytail casual.
My thoughts are.. your body and the only opinion that matters is your own. Do what you love!
I think what perpetuates this myth is that we typically experience hair thinning as we age. Shorter hair was a method used to mask it. If you’re not thinning, I’d ignore this antiquated advice. Even if you are thinning and short hair isn’t your thing, I’d still ignore it. There are plenty of ways instead of going short to address density and volume.
Omg same! My mother had hair to her hips and my grandmother would quietly admonish her childhood hippie haircut when she was now mother. My mother finally cut her hair very short but only because of thinning and hair loss.
A couple of years after I got married I had cut my hair short and my aunties and grandmother were fawning over my it’s about time you got hair to match your age, you’re a married woman now. Lol.
It’s hard to let that go. I see gorgeous women in their 80s with long gorgeous hair and secret,y want that, but as soon as my hair it’s below my shoulders I mentally freak out a bit and get it trimmed back into a layered but shorter style.
As a cancer survivor I thought the shaved head look would emotionally end me but I loved the life of the short buzz. Just not enough to keep it.
Very helpful video! Now would you please kindly do a video about how to determine our face shape. I am having a hard time figuring that out.
Very straightforward and informative. Thanks again... love your videos!
You’re so welcome!! Thank you for that feedback. I’m so glad to hear you’re liking them!
I"m pretty sure that I have an oval face shape, and very narrow, so when my hair gets much length, unless there is a lot of shaping and layers, it makes me look drawn and old. My hair is fine, and soft with thin strands so shaping and layers make my hair look stringy. I think the best cut for my face and hair type is a jaw length blunt bob with no layers and no shaping. I could be wrong, but that is how I wear my hair now and I like it.
Very interesting upload. I would like to get a bob but I still struggle to know which bob to choose. I have a convex face shape. Very similar to Barbra Streisand. Now at the age of 57 I also have sunken cheeks and sagging jowls. Which bob or haircut would be best to hide all these imperfections? Many thanks for your help.
Great question. it's tough to say for sure without seeing you but if you want to accentuate a stronger and more lifted cheekbone, creating volume around the temple and having the fullness on the sides around the cheeks more tapered in, will help that.
@@justinhickox Thanks very much for replying. It is really not easy to find the right style for my face. I always try to create volume on top and the fringe so I somehow can hide my front. I will try your suggestion too. Thanks again so much.
Thanks for the tips Justin I have a long shape face and always have a straight Fringe but taking your suggestion of sweeping it to the side I think that I have made myself look younger. Thank you for the advise.
The last and most important tip reminds me RASHIDA JONES, shes its so beautiful with long hair, but she likes short and sometimes really really short , but works ! Of course she has a perfect face and soul and body atc.... but shes not afraid to texture or edgy bangs!
Very helpful video! As an older woman I BBC would love to find a hair cut that helps me look younger and not odd.
Thank you Justin, great tips.
Thank you Justin! You're always so informative. Love your fur babies❤
Hi. I've had difficulty deciding my face shape. When I was young, I had a definite heart shape including the widows peak. Now time and weight gain has created a face with jowls and a thick neck. What should I do? Additionally, I have curly hair.
It’s tough to say without seeing you, however, if you still have any narrowness in your jaw and broadness in your cheek area, moving towards a bob shape, that functions for a heart face shape, would still work well for you. A bit less volume around the cheeks and more volume up in the temple, could also help lift things.
Cool! More clarification! I was thinking along the same lines for my longish/rectangularish face. Namely a bob that ends just below the chin. I still haven't worked up the courage to do it, but at least I have a good idea of what's most likely to work for when that day comes :)
I never had a "good " hairdryer so I splurged and bought the Laifen one and I'm sure I'll love it! I was cracking up at the dryer test 😂
Ok trusting you on the Laifen. Just ordered!
That’s awesome! I appreciate your trust, can’t wait to hear how much you love it! It’s been a fantastic dryer for us.
I bought the Laifen dryer immediately after watching your previous video where you were demonstrating drying and styling on your wife. Can I just say I LOVE this dryer??!! I just ordered a second one using your link. I chose the pearl pink with rose gold lint trap cover for my first one. The white and gold for #2. I have a Dyson and in all honesty, I love this Laifen much more. The price is phenomenal for what you get! It's easy to change heat temperature without stopping what you're doing, same for the speed. Plus, I'm shallow... I love the color light ring showing heat temp and this beautiful pink color! I'm headed to my stylist's in 2 days to get my long bob shortened. I do have a round face with bangs. My bangs are chipped into so they are not straight across nor dense. I definitely know what to tell her that I want after watching this video and others of yours, Justin. I think this longer style makes me look older & frumpy! At 73, I do not want nor need that! 😉
I once wanted a bob with bangs haircut à la Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction.
No one much commented on it, either way (not a good sign, I now realize). Then I met with my brother and he just looked at me and said: 'You look like Prince Valiant with that haircut...' 😅.
Lesson learned.
With my square face and pronounced features, I can do a bob, but I need layers and volume and no straight across bangs, ever.
LOL! Love it! Trust me, we have ALL had those moments. You're spot on with your idea for a bob shape!
I could always count on my brother for the truth! 😂🥰
Thanks for this video. This face shape stuff always interested me since I have the oval or longer face . I keep the balance as best I can. Also thanks for sharing your dogs. So cute❤
You're so welcome! I'm really glad it could help! Did this help at all?
@Justin Hickox yes but I have shorter hair but still interesting
Great video Justin! Thank you!
This was so helpful 🥲❤
Thankyou. 🙏
I have an oval face but am older and have jowls. Does that mean I should go for a shorter bob or longer bob. Trying to take the focus away from the jowls and neck.
I love the drawings, thank you!
My face shape looks best with a long bob and side swept bangs, but I always end up foregoing the bangs because I HATE having them constantly falling into my face and eyes. Is there a product I can try to hold them at bay?
Thank you, glad I could help! Great question! There are products out there. You would want either a volumizer that you could use in your hair before you dry it to help give it control, or a wax with "high hold and low shine" that you can apply after you style it.
Thanks for the great tips and love 💕 the dogs as well😉
Thank you Justin love this informative video!
I have never had a good haircut in my life. The girls get a six month training certificate and know only the basics. The f I go in for a bob, there’s only one thing they will do: Cut it straight across the bottom. I’ve never even had a stylist pin up my hair before to cut it in sections. No matter what the haircut I ask for they cut straight across the bottom..
Yes. And if you ask for layers, they do a few snips around your face!
Thank you for such useful information, thoroughly enjoyed this.
Ok, I swear Justin cold be “Frogman Tactical’s” brother, or vice versa.
Thanks for another great video!
Love ALL the vids! 2 questions how does this dryer hold up against the dyson, besides it’s affordable? I recently bought the hair story shampoo/conditioner and the undressed. Is there a chance of product build up? Thanks again.
I love your videos so informative and full of really good tips to style hair. Thank you 👏👏
Thanks for the video. I have a rectangle face with a larger forehead and a slight widow's peak. Currently my hair falls around my shoulders in mostly one length. I am wondering if adding more layering and side swept bangs is a good idea? I want some length to be able to pull my hair up as I have an active lifestyle.
This was very helpful, thanks a lot
SO HELPFUL!! 🎉🎉
Also I’m going to play the dog treats and hairdryer game with my dog, just because. 🤣
Awesome! Glad I could help! And YES, always love playing a good game with the pups!
I’ll always have some length bob haircut. Sadly my face shape is changing. Age and injury. That said, I’m a grow old as gracefully as possible.
Organically.
♥️
@Jamesrolls726 short.
@Jamesrolls726 whatever everyone else isn’t doing.
Thank you for you video. I wear the French bob like forever, short with short bang. My face is triangle or oval or round depending on my diet, I had it in many colors, and I like the style, it fits my personality. Now that I saw this video, I am not sure for which type the haircut is for. Also the other carré are not for me cause I am a petite and it will makes me older. So now I am a bit lost... 😅
Every single face looks better with the "square" bobcut lol.
Like, every single bobcut you recommended looks so bland and boring.
Absolutely right. Bob cut with straight bangs are always the most beautiful, bold and sexiest hair styles, even in the old times.
I want to try a bob but I'm worried because my hair is very fine and thin. It doesn't have a lot of volume so I'm worried it will end up looking limp and weird in a bob shape.
Same
Same
😂😂😂 such a cool/ funny way to demonstrate 👏
Thank you Justin❤❤
I bought the Laifen last fall when you recommended it and it's wonderful, just like you say it is. I think I need to study my face shape more--what I think it is differs from what everyone else in my family says (and they all say different things).
The puppy patrol section was the best
Thanks for the video. I've been thinking of getting my hair cut into a bob and I definitely don't want to end up with the, "Don't do bob." Lol.
Glad I could help. Did it all make sense?
Very much, thank you! I love the channel and your dogs are precious!

I think I’m going to let my hair grow some. Maybe in the fall. I’m not sure I can survive in the summer with my hair growing. But I’ve always wanted a bob. Now I know what kind I should get. This was a great video for me to figure out which one I should get.
Excellent video. Thank you ❤
