So well, it may not look the same on one person to the next person it will still have the same effects on that individual face shape. As far as finding specific photos, I feel like I should do a video on this exact topic. I hear this a lot, it’s something I have to explain in a lot of comments. Finding photos of the hairstyles. I’m speaking of on different hair textures is almost impossible in itself. Finding those photos that I’m allowed to use is a whole other issue. Trying to find photos of the styles I’m talking about on each individual hair texture, that I can use, that also represent every specific face appearance. Is flat out impossible. I wish I could, but it is a much bigger task than people understand.
I appreciate your response, Justin. I can understand your position with regards to finding photos. I just find that every time I see a chin length bob, I love it and then I get it for myself and I don’t love it. It shows my saggy neck more and my dowager hump, and I am not the type of person who is going to kill myself to get super skinny like celebrities and fashion models. So if I go with longer hair, it hides those features more.
@@justinhickoxthough maybe you could speak to whether there are any style techniques which work better for double chins than others. Perhaps there aren’t any. Or perhaps we need to go with the face shape, as in this video and maybe that will distract from the neck/chin?
But he does address how to elongate a full face or if you only have a saggy neck then you’d have it longer. I’m not super skinny…or even thin, but I’m older and have lost the fullness in my small square face. I love his advice. These women in the photos may be younger, but we all still have a certain face shape. All makes sense.

I'll get shorter layers on top which disconnects, then too much thinning on sides and they all want to shave the cowlicks out of my neck and I end up with a "granny bob". Kinda frustrating. I want to grow it at least to shoulder length, or wherever it looks healthy. I do like to wear it up at times. I know I'm not the only one with this dilemma. Please.... HELP😂
You’re so welcome! I hope this video helped. Have you watched the video that I attached to the end of this video? If you haven’t, it has some amazing styling tips to help keep things looking more current.
All the models have a perfect jawline, so no double chin/turkey wattle to hide. Very few older people look good with a bob at chin length or shorter. I'm one of them at 74!😊
Thank you so much for all these videos that help us find the best haircut. I have never seen anyone make such a useful hairdressing video. My only regret is not having met you sooner and you are not my hairdresser😉. Your wife is also wonderful. Hello from France
The line that you talk about to accentuate the cheekbones is what I have a hard time explaining to stylists. I particularly don’t like the way I look when I don’t have that line (when the bottom is too heavy). But if they layer my hair too much, there isn’t enough weight on the bottom to hold my hair down, and it just curls up and looks much shorter.
This is such a great video. Thank you. Very helpful. Curly, wavy with gray hair. Who doesn't want to look witchy granny! This helps me understand what i need. And explain what i want and why.
Love the detail in the video. I have a long face and straight hair. Your video says tue best for this is chin length, however i have a very long neck and worry that would make it look longer. Suggestions?
Most informative! Will need to watch several times to get it into my head. It will take abouit six months for my hair to grow long enough to get a bob, a look I really want to try. Thanks again for your inspiration and imformation.
I learned a lot from this video, I love bobs have had some good ones and bad. I am now 77 and my hair is normally straight, now it is frizzy and if I allow it to air dry it has some curl to it. I have always battled a cow lick in the crown I believe it is and it really swirls, also in the bang area as well as that area thinning. What tips can you give me to work with all of this stuff? One more problem the back of my head is flat so always need some undercutting. Thank you for the videos you put out.
As many have said, I am a woman of a certain age with a rounder face and "fivehead," who would love to see more photos of older women and those who are plumper than the models in this video. I recently got a bob from a PDX "celebrity" hairstylist. While I asked for midway between chin and shoulders (knowing this helps reduce the roundness), he chopped away to just above my chin, which only makes my face more pie-like. 😜 I believe you're located in the PNW, and I'm sure there are lots of us, myself included, who would be glad to offer up our mugs if it would help. Appreciate all of your great advice!
@@grittylilfremont745 I hear ya. This is what I did.... Firstly, after deciding which cut I wanted, I searched instructional videos and then went to my stylist for a cut. I asked him if it was possible to do....and then to layer like this...and to have a bang that does this..... He was happy because he was using his skills and even happier at the finished cut. He actually said, "We've invented a custom cut!" and proceeded to give me a discount. Win win
@@grittylilfremont745so does mine! I have fine thin hair. After I leave the salon I go home and restyle my hair. So now after my she trims my hair I tell her she doesn’t have to dry my hair. I make an excuse I have another commitment after my appointment so she doesn’t get offended. When I have had her dry my hair in the past it has no volume and my hair lays flat on my head.
I Love the Bobs, but my texture is heavy, dense and straight but I like the curly/wavy styles better. I’d have to work on styling!! But this is a Fantastic Video. Thank you.
Thank you so much! For you, yes styling it is going to be absolutely key if you want to try to achieve a wavy feel or look. I’m really glad this video helped a bit! Thanks for hanging out today.
I think an angled bob looks so good on me (thick and fine hair), but I am so sick of dealing with the angle when I am a behind the ear tucker. Please tell me which bob for the ear tucker!!
Thank you for the information. Would love to hear more about women with wavy hair. It feels like I fight to make or keep it straight and I don't have enough curl to wear as a curly. What bobs work best for those? Thank you.
I have a long, heart-shaped face, and high, pretty defined cheekbones... I have fine yet thick wavy/curly hair (think thick forest of skinny trees), and I sport bobs. Definitely spot-on with the chin-length. Last haircut I went a bit shorter, about the top of my chin button, and that seems to work well, as well. Thank you for this video! I'm definitely going to sub. 👍
I love all your advice @justinhickox I’m older with a square face that’s lost its fullness and my angular jawline is not as sharp as it was but I love my chic bob hairstyle. All makes sense to me. Thank you ♥️
Loved this video! Thank you Justin! I'm in the category of petite... oblong face shape and thick wavy hair. I've jumped back and forth over the years from long layered hair to a chin length bob. My best look far and away is a chin length bob....( I'm in my early 50's and I don't believe in rules regarding hair length and age...the bob on me personally is more youthful...I felt like my long hair was dragging me down ) I have a tendency to blow it out/heat style it.... This video gave me great options for wavy bobs. I would love to style it both ways. Thanks for all your amazing content!
I enjoy your videos. It seems that you speak of thin, fine hair or thick wavy hair most of the time. My hair must be the oddball, as I have thick, fine, slightly wavy hair. It would be great to see what your suggestions would be for hair like mine. Thank you!
Dang. I'm a disabled older woman fighting with my appearance. I wish I could afford a consultation with Justin to figure out a style that would work for my super fine, suoer steaight, super thin hair. Ugh.
what a wonderfully understandable chart. I love that you share relevant information in your videos in a concise and understandable way so that we as viewers can figure out what suits our hair and needs. It's so damn helpful! 🤩
This is so awesome! Sincerely, thank you! It really makes me happy to hear this. I always hope that I’m explaining things clearly, but I never know if I’m doing a good job at it. I really appreciate this feedback.
@@justinhickox from my point of view, you're doing it just right. the structure and presentation is easy for me to understand, as it [partly] builds on each other. a great achievement and processing of your expertise that you provide us with here. and the collaborations are great too. i really enjoy watching your content.
Great video again Justin. I appreciate all the suggestions. It would be interesting to link suggestions on how hair color can enhance the effects of the right style. And if you ever recommend adding some bayalage at home?
Would so appreciate a vid of tips to deal with problem areas. Specifically for me, I have a stubborn cowlick in the back of my head that keeps separating so that I look like I have a bald spot. I’ve tried putting in small rollers at the back to try and keep the hair a little more curly but that doesn’t always work either. I have to do serious back-combing which ultimately makes the back of my head look messy. Would those small hair pieces you stick in help with that? Great vids.
Great in-depth information! Do you have videos for those of us with face shapes that differ from those in the video? My forehead is high and wide, still wide at the cheeks, but my chin is small and receding. I'm 60 with curly-wavy texture. Is it possible to balance that kind of face shape with a bob or other cut?
¡Ey!
Thanks for the explanation. I’ve always cut my own hair in various Bobs through the last 50 years of my 70 year life. I have absolutely straight medium thick hair & received compliments on my cut; I didn’t quite understand what I had done - just made my very straight grey hair manageable and ends not frizz. I always wanted hair out of my eyes as I wear glasses. 15 months ago I let it grow long to pull up off my neck in the hot summer. Now I am frustrated because it was great but not as flattering pulling top hair flat no matter where the part is. Is there a way to layer the side of face with shorter hair & have that ponytail?
Hi Justin, I love your channel. They are informative and fun! My hair is none of these described. I'm 60, and my shape face is confusing, lol. Narrow forehead and temples, high cheeks, and a strong chin. It's definitely not round, though. My hair is odd....curly on top wavy on the sides and thin. Also, the ends are completely straight. I live in Florida, so humidity is an issue. Therefore, I have almost grown out all of my layers. My hair is naturally dry and color treated, so I don't put heat to it. Especially with the sun drying it, too. So after my shower, I put it in a pony tail, which straightens my hair out the way I like it. My length is halfway down my back, which is nice, except I lack volume in the crown. Any suggestions for my hair? I don't want to go shorter than my collar bone. And my sides are too thin to layer. Also, with the Florida heat, I need to be able to keep it off my neck. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
I like the curly cuts you have. It’s so hard to get a good haircut on curly hair. It’s hard to get just the right amount of layering that it doesn’t too bulky or thin at the bottom. I want it just right and have a very hard time getting that.
Great tips! But what style do you suggest for small faces? Or short necks? Especially with curly hair? I would love to wear my curls but I end up blowing it smooth because I find my natural hair overwhelms my frame.
How can I get you and your beautiful wife and Gabi to come to Boston to give me a makeover? You 3 are my favorite stylist/artists. Love all that you do, thank you 😊
I like the bob style at 16:45 even though my face is a little longer. But my hair is much curlier! Would I do the same style for extra curly hair? My hair is fine but their is alot of it. And frizzes easy. Thanks! Lisa Owen
I have a question! What is the best type of bob for when you start to have jowls and dont want to get attention to them? ( im french, i hope that made sense!) i have veru thick type 3 curls, long face, long hair. I want to chop them off, but im scared that it would draw the attention to my lower cheeks 😅, thanks!
Hé! Excellente question.
I have a question about having fine, straight, but a fair amount of hair that I prefer to wear curly. I believe I have a round to oval face. Do the guidelines for straight or curly hair apply to my cut based on how I like to style it?
You’re so welcome! I’m so glad I could help. I really do want to do more curly hair content, it’s just so hard to get those videos to get views because of the way the algorithm looks and because my channel isn’t a “curly hair “channel. If people don’t click on the video in the first hour, it will get pushed down in the algorithm and no one will ever see it unless they search for it.
@justinhickox That's ok....I always enjoy your videos. I love watching tips on all kinds of hair. Getting some curly hair advice was just a lovely bonus. ❤️
Justin I really like your videos. However, it seems like every time I click on your channel it is always about Bob haircuts. Not all of us want a bob. I know I can click out, as I will on this one also, because I am not cutting my longer than bob hair for this cut.
Justin/Hair God…..do you have a vid for long, thinner, straight hair (wanting to keep it long, but something help with fullness. I hear long layers only, but??? Bangs? As I get older, it’s doing that menopause “thing” where it’s falling out more…..mainly at the hairline (receding hairline. 😢….but, castor oil & rosemary EO is helping! 😊). Blah blah. Sorry. See? I need you!!
Hey! You're way too kind! Thank you. I definitely agree layers can be a great idea for you. To clarify, are you looking for a video with different medium to long hairstyles for thin fine hair?
@@justinhickox sorry....i have 3 youtube accounts somehow.....same me. i just popped on and your video cutting your lovely wife's hair started playing. that is me.....i am attached to this looong hair. but, i know it is time. gulp. )= it is long and on the thin (not fine) side. a bit of wave as i get older, but still quite straight.
I lost a lot of hair about 6 months ago and had to cut it really short, now I am trying to grow back out and my hair is super thick, corse and half curly. It’s driving me crazy, it’s now a little past the tops of my ears, I want to let it grow out into a long curly bob but for now just the front and sides are curly and the back is straight with a slight wave. My question is- would it help to layer the sides and back so that I can deal with it until it grows out? BTW I am not good at styling my hair 😂😂
I hear ya! I currently rarely cut behind the chair due to time constraints (unless filming for the channel). I do however have some amazing stylists at my salon that could take good care of you. You can find them here: www.justinhickox.com/hickoxstudio
Bonjour Justin I have thin hair but enough to get volume. But they are too flat on the top, especially regarding to the hair on ears which are consequently too voluminous . But I don't want to reduce the volume on ears, just want to increase hair mass on the top. I am lost and not sure to find around a hairdresser like you.
I have a curl to my hair My husband likes when i crunch it. I don’t feel i have enough curl to look healthy. More bird nest look. Tried many products. Even the ones that are supposed to keep the curls curly but soft. I don’t feel done! Hair length is just touching my shoulders and a couple of layers, no bangs. Please help a frustrated senior? Thank you
My face shape has changed and weirdly, I don't know what I look like anymore. I used to have a round face with high cheek bones, now I still have high cheek bones but my face looks longer, it's Not round anymore. I really don't know how to describe myself anymore, I have been 1-way for 1/2 of a century…
Hi. Nice video, but nothing new. Basic face shapes and basic solutions. How about a challenge? What kind bob would look good on a straight hair that lost its volume, around a face that lost volume as well due to age , oval shape, and long neck?
I volunteer as tribute. I have a square face thats chunky with a little double chin and I'm in my 40s, and have Fine + Thin hair! Could you use me as a real life example/model and cut my hair?
Uuugghhhh why can't I live closer to you so you could be my stylist?!? lol Any recommendations for hair loss/shedding due to surgery/anesthesia?? It was already thin and fine before surgery but now it's see through. I've cut off several inches but at this rate I'm going to need a pixie cut. :(
To facilitate regrowth and capillary balance, you can eat foods containing Group B vitamins and glitters of sprinkle beer or wheat on your salad. Also, consume enough vitamin D2 + D3 and calcium. First, you should examine your deficiencies by asking your doctor for a prescription to a laboratory blood test. Hairdressing tips and tricks do not prevent hair loss and only cheat momentarily because hair thickness and growth depend on internal food.
@@Jasmine_Shelby_art Thanks so much for the info. I've consulted with a doctor and did some blood work and believe I am now on my way to regrowing the hair I lost due to surgery/anesthesia and stress on my body from surgery. I just wish I had someone as knowledgeable as Justin to give me a good cut to get through this phase. He's so awesome!
Curve ball…..What about fine hair with medium to thick density, very wavy to curly but can be blown out pretty straight? Except…one side hikes up more than the other an hour after I do my best to straighten. That’s me. I don’t like the curl/wave when it is shorter. I look like a squirrel, especially since it has a mind of its own.😂
lol lol. I did giggle at the squirrel look. 😂 Drowned rat is a look I often end up with. I have a very hot head and my hair gets sweaty when I walk fast. My hair is wavy with a mind of its own too and similar texture to yours.
So I am a 56-year-old lady and I have always had microbangs. I've had it with my long hair with my pixies and now growing out my pixie as a mullet or shullet or wixie. I have a square and almost a rectangle face. I don't know if you can zoom in on my photo in this message. This was the Bob I had a while ago I always felt it was too much hair. I do have fine hair but tons of it. And it is wavy to curly with product. At this point I don't think Bob's work for me at all ,I need to keep hair away from my face, these long things by my cheeks is hiding and making me look fatter. It's weird you would think it would be the opposite.
I did follow other videos of his like this but the overall reaction was: Why did you get a Karen haircut? In fact my hairdresser warned me before the cut that this was a Karen haircut, but I didn't think that was really a visual stereotype, just a behavior. It did not go well. I ended up keeping back of pinned up most of the time because of the reactions I was getting. The angled up in the back thing is a bad plan. I wonder if there's another way...? Wolf cut or shag?
I don’t understand how these are all bob styles when they are all so different . When I was a kid, a bob was a one length haircut above the shoulders. To me, these are all layers medium length haircuts.
I don't do this often but I currently have 10 VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS (ZOOM CALLS) available!

I know I'm not the only one with this dilemma. Please....
HELP😂
It's difficult to keep my bob from looking 'granny', especially as I'm now in my 60's and hair texture is changing. Thank you for this video!
You’re so welcome! I hope this video helped. Have you watched the video that I attached to the end of this video? If you haven’t, it has some amazing styling tips to help keep things looking more current.
I'm a little younger than you and know what you mean. I add a little color to my hair which helps a tiny bit.
@@justinhickox Hi, Justin. I have an A-line bob cut with some layering. You're videos are amazing, and funny, helpful, and Dionna is just amazing
All the models have a perfect jawline, so no double chin/turkey wattle to hide. Very few older people look good with a bob at chin length or shorter. I'm one of them at 74!😊
I'm in the same boat.... beyond my youthness & much older with all the sagging!! That's life. 😊
You are such a great teacher. You explain things un such a clear manner and very directly. Thank you.
Great video for bobs!! How about doing one for us older gals that are growing our hair out - with layers ?
Thank you! That's a great idea! I'll definitely keep that in mind for a future video. Any length range you're thinking of specifically?
@@justinhickox you decide on that! We need inspiration ❤️
Love your lessons! I'm very very distrusting of most hair stylists as I've had some horrible experiences. But I'd let you cut my hair anyday!
I have the same hair 😅 started growing out the greys last year
You’re a genius! This gem of a video will be on repeat for me!
Thank you so much! That means a ton to me. I’m so glad it was helpful!
It is so complicated but I appreciate your expertise
I learned a lot from this video, I love bobs have had some good ones and bad. I am now 77 and my hair is normally straight, now it is frizzy and if I allow it to air dry it has some curl to it. I have always battled a cow lick in the crown I believe it is and it really swirls, also in the bang area as well as that area thinning. What tips can you give me to work with all of this stuff? One more problem the back of my head is flat so always need some undercutting. Thank you for the videos you put out.
Great video, thank you for the time stamps.
So helpful! I hair fairly thin curly hair with an oval face. I took screenshots and will bring to my hairdresser! Thank you!
Thank you😍😜I am now sending your videos to my hair dresser to train her🤪👍🇿🇦
HAHA! Thank you so much for that trust!
Yeah right. My hairdresser gets offended when I try to tell her about tips I have learned from TH-cam professionals
@@grittylilfremont745
I hear ya.
Win win
@@nowaynohow1275that is AWESOME!!!
What about the lenght of the neck? How should that change our prefences?
Perfect timing I am getting ready to get a hair cut and been looking at the bob!
Great video! Very informative and helpful. The face shapes coupled with hair textures help to make the right decision for a haircut.
I avoid anything shorter than my shoulders bc when it grows out, it does flips and weirdness if you don’t blowfry.
Thank you!
This video was meant for me to see😊
Thank you!
Dang. I'm a disabled older woman fighting with my appearance. I wish I could afford a consultation with Justin to figure out a style that would work for my super fine, suoer steaight, super thin hair. Ugh.
Wow Thank you Justin from Melbourne Australia… I’m trying to recover from 2 awful haircuts… torture 😵💫😵💫🤨

This is so awesome! Sincerely, thank you! It really makes me happy to hear this. I always hope that I’m explaining things clearly, but I never know if I’m doing a good job at it. I really appreciate this feedback.

Helpful tips! Are there ways to apply these tips to lobs? Especially with a longer face shape if the overall length is longer?
Beautiful cuts and styling.

Great vids.
Thanks so much for this! I see my hair dresser this week
You’re so welcome! I hope this helps you decide. Can't wait to hear how it goes.
Great video! Love the why for each hair type and face shape.
Oh. Great information!! Learning so much 🎉
Super excited about this...thank you so much!!
I hope you love it! I’m so glad you’re excited about it.
Would you please do a video on using heat styler on curly hair - 3rd day to add oomph, w/o wetting or adding product.
I have a long oval (high forehead). I keep my forehead covered for the most part, a lot like the girl in the image.
Justin que buen video!. ❤Me encanto , necesitaba saber que estaba mal con mi corte. Gracias
Great video...learned a lot. Thanks

Great job! I remember Susan as well. 😬
❤❤❤Love you so much
Thank you for all your videos ❤❤ we need to find a way to bottle you 😊😊😊😊

I have a prominent chin that I try to play down, should I avoid bobs altogether?
My face has changed over the years and menopause
How can I get you and your beautiful wife and Gabi to come to Boston to give me a makeover? You 3 are my favorite stylist/artists. Love all that you do, thank you 😊
Can you address the older ladies with jowls or a double chin?
I like the bob style at 16:45 even though my face is a little longer. But my hair is much curlier! Would I do the same style for extra curly hair? My hair is fine but their is alot of it. And frizzes easy. Thanks! Lisa Owen
Seems like I need a bob haircut below my chin… what is the best growing out strategy from a pixie haircut?
I have a question! What is the best type of bob for when you start to have jowls and dont want to get attention to them? ( im french, i hope that made sense!) i have veru thick type 3 curls, long face, long hair. I want to chop them off, but im scared that it would draw the attention to my lower cheeks 😅, thanks!
Hé! Excellente question.

I have a question about having fine, straight, but a fair amount of hair that I prefer to wear curly. I believe I have a round to oval face. Do the guidelines for straight or curly hair apply to my cut based on how I like to style it?
I have had different answers to “what is my face shape” how do I get the best answer?
Thank you so much for this video, Justin. I enjoyed all the great advice for curly hair ❤
@justinhickox
That's ok....I always enjoy your videos.

Bangs? I lost a lot of hair about 6 months ago and had to cut it really short, now I am trying to grow back out and my hair is super thick, corse and half curly. It’s driving me crazy, it’s now a little past the tops of my ears, I want to let it grow out into a long curly bob but for now just the front and sides are curly and the back is straight with a slight wave.

I wish you all the best. And up to my previous advise I agree a good haircut can help 😉
Drowned rat is a look I often end up with. I have a very hot head and my hair gets sweaty when I walk fast. My hair is wavy with a mind of its own too and similar texture to yours.
how about showing wavy hair please?
Wolf cut or shag?
what about us that have a prominent nose? for real
I don’t understand how these are all bob styles when they are all so different . When I was a kid, a bob was a one length haircut above the shoulders. To me, these are all layers medium length haircuts.
I didn't see anything here for thin hair, long face. This was a bit confusing.
