A very clear video and still useful in 2024!. Now it's a question not only of saving money but of finding someone who knows the hood mechanism of a 25 year old BMW. Much better to sort it myself. Thank you Zach.

My dad has a e36 325i convertible and was getting it valeted by a company on its return he removed his hard top with my help and wanted to put up his soft top but there was no movement just the motors, so of course when getting it valeted they must of pulled the strap thinking thats how you remove the rear seats, thanks for this brilliant video very well explained and saves people like my dad from spending money thats not needed.

Zach, dude, you’re the man! I have a 99 328i and love driving it when I have time, but it sits in the garage a lot anymore. Last week, the top wouldn’t complete the locking portion to close. I had to manually release to put it back down so I’ll try this. Your videos are excellent. You should be paid, bro!

I had a new soft top fitted at a local trim centre even though it looked great when I got it back the roof wouldn't work ! The trim centre disconnected the motors and said I can only use it manually now as it need various parts (£400 worth) I was pissed off as it worked when it went in ! Any I didn't believe them as the parts looked ok so I found this video tried it and guess what all works fine !!! Thanks mate you saved me a lot of money 😀😀

Thanks for the awesome video that explains how to close and open a convertible top manually. Then how to reset the top so the motor engages and works normally. I probably watched 50 videos on youtube and none of them explained anything close to what you did in your video. Thank you so much for the help.

I encountered the same problem and found the possible problem. I had the same symptom. The motor did not want to go all the way up (there was about a quarter inch of play). The issue was a split washer sitting on top of the motor gear. Make sure it has not come out of its play. It is a force fit. It was offset and was not allowing the motor housing to go all the way up. I used pliers and forced it back to its position and the motor fit nicely. HTH
ps - thanks for all these vids Zach!

this video helped me trouble shoot my issue. It's definitely my softtop motor becaues it doesn't sit properly eve after "reengaging". On a side note, you can actually remove fuse #7(5A fuse up forward) to disable the automatic trunk lock, but be careful when manually operating the lid and trunk as there will be nothing to save you from screwing up your paint.

Thank you for making the video and doing it right! It saved the day to the beach when the tonneau cover wouldn't open. Your video was thorough enough to help me know what I was looking at and understand what caused the problem. The drive rod for the cover popped off because the circ-clip came off. And then, with your video, I was able to resync. Thanks again! (Ed in Houston)

To follow up on this: I posted below that the tonneau cover motor (second one near tail light) on my car came completely out of the hole and wouldn't line up to close it. I couldn't really see what was causing the issue because of the mounting plate that it mounts to being in the way so i figured I'd just take it apart as I could only see 4 bolts holding it in. In doing this I was able to spin it around so I could see why it would not close. It was shifted about 1/4" from the hole and it still wouldn't go in by hand so I disconnected the cables and electrical connector and the couple screws holding the motor to the bracket and removed the motor. I took it into my work bench and laid it on its side so I could grip and squeeze it together, then I smacked it with a hammer while squeezing and it popped right back in. I reinstalled it and followed the rest of the process and now the top opens and closes properly. I took pictures to illustrate and share the steps here but I don't see how to attach or upload them. After I completely installed it again I accidentally hit the release lever and the motor was once again open and wouldn't shut. I thought that maybe I could just pry it a little from the left side and squeeze on the right at the same time and it worked. To prevent this from happening again, I glued a 1/2 thick piece of foam to the back of the motor about a 1/2" or so from the top. and now it works great. I couldn't have done this without this very helpful video. Man, you are a lifesaver to many for sharing!!! Thanks again.

This is why I make these videos, to help others save money.
The next time the top gets "stuck" try to help the top to close with one hand while simultaneously push the "up" button. I have a feeling that you might need new "tension straps". A Common problem.
As for your other problem, Can you tell if the cables have any tension (located) under the rear seat?
    Good luck!

Many thanks for good video, this was great help when i had little problems with one of those rods which drive roof back part up and down. Sync was easy to do.
There was little effor needed when i re-attached those motors, but all went well in the end.

it is an allen key, located on your tool kit. Remove the cover and then crank the key to release the hooks from the top of the windshield and then reset the top as shown.
    good luck!
