Inside a Military Dictatorship (Myanmar Documentary) | Real Stories

  • Myanmar’s path to democracy leads along the bumpy road of a 50-year military dictatorship. Long stretches were traversed with the incomparable endurance of the hopes of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Finally in power after more than 20 years of house arrest, the grave human rights violations against the Muslim minority of the Rohingya nevertheless continue across the country. Myanmar provides the setting for a seemingly absurd political power game. Filmmaker Karen Stokkendal Poulsen pointed her camera at the former peace icon and the retired generals to provide a captivating investigative exploration of the opposing coexistence of a woman and the military. The story of a political miracle, which, unfortunately, ceased to be one.

China wants Bai Suocheng and his fellow scammers that's why they supported Operation 1027. Now that they got what they wanted, they reverted to helping the Junta.
If the rebels and EAOs take down that air superiority, this Junta gonna fall down.
Plus, they've been supported by ZRA, an Indian rebel group, and the ARSA, the reason the Rohingyas were driven outta Myanmar.

I lived in Myanmar for 3 years. IMO the best thing about that country is the people who are some of the kindest, most humble and genuine one could ever hope to meet. Unfortunately, those qualities are absent in those leading the military. The blatant corruption, arrogance and sheer stupidity of the military leadership (who also control all of the major industries) is absolutely stunning. I was present during the latest coup and the cruelty displayed by the army towards their own people was truly shocking to me. Many of the generals interviewed for this program are directly responsible for grotesque suffering and death.

Excellent documentary! I was born and brought up in Burma and left the country 45 years ago. At this time, the military dictatorship that took power in 2021 is on the defensive. I hope and pray that the anti-government forces defeat Min Aung Hlaing and his cohorts, and once again try to build a democratic country with freedom and equality for people of all religious background and ethnicity!
Many accuse Aung San Su Kyi of being insensitive to the plight of the Muslim Rohingyas. This documentary pays a tribute to her Muslim legal adviser(U Ko Ni), who was assassinated, and who played a pivotal role in suggesting the position of State Councillor for her. She had to walk such a fine line that she was unable to mourn for him publicly! A woman who sacrificed her life for her country is not anti-humanitarian, we need to sympathize with her and hope that she returns triumphant in the very near future!!!

This documentary brings back many warm memories of my stay in Myanmar before Daw Aung San Suu Kyi became the de facto president. It was a country with great beauties and nice people. The military has mismanaged the country for over half a century and brought the land to its knees. The generals have a life far above its people, taking all the resources, land, mines, industry. They are the biggest land owners, and the monks probably came second. It's also a very strange country with old and odd traditions. It takes a long time for outsiders to be there and learn about the people and why and how they become who they are now. But anyway, all the best to the Myanmar people. They deserve better.

@@kz7854 What was she supposed to do? Walk into an extremely obvious trap set by the military making a statement that would have made completely no difference? The military was entirely independent of her and conducted those operations entirely independent of her. The ministries that control the military are constitutionally under military command. She was up against a military who were itching to get rid of her and had the ultimate power over her. But yeah she should have made some PR statement, been violently removed from office allowing the military to establish another totalitarian dictatorship. The military were using her to legitimise their rule while she was fighting to establish democracy. You do know she was working with the UN to try and grant citizenship to the Rohingya before the military derailed it.
Ultimately if you have to get into bed with genocidal maniacs to free your own people, you’ve got to make some heartbreaking compromises. It’s pretty much how diplomacy works. You’d be horrified if you read your average peace deal after a stalemate in a bitter war/insurgency

When the spokesperson said that Aung San Suu Kyi has a little knowledge to tlrun the government, I mean, man from 1960's to 2011( and resumes again up to this day) the country is considered as one of poorest countries in Asia. They kept lying to themselves that they are doing fine but in reality they aren't.

when mayanmar accepted democracy, The military was able to negotiate 50% of power with itself without any election. 50% of rule was with the people through votes. It was bound to fail anyways. mayanmar is a failed state. A failed state is not only because of its rulers, it has equal contribution of it common citizen. Mayanmar has no resources, they should have worked towards making itself resourceful through education and business but they chose to fight among themselves to steal the limited resources they have. The result is a failed state. its a shame and a failure on part of mayanmar people and its culture. Now its upto the rebels to take control and allow democratic governance to take root in burma else the misery has just started. Mayanmar will become history if this goes on.
