I think the padding in this area of the shoe would be the topline, cuff or collar padding@@FiveMinuteVelo (I spent a couple of years of my life studying foot mechanics so learnt a bit too much about shoe anatomy!) I bought a pair of these shoes and did a couple of rides, but they weren't for me. I was happy with the stiffness (I'm used to stiff road shoes) but I found the overall fit quite narrow. There are other brands I find a bit too narrow, such as Fizik, but these were uncomfortably so for anything more than a short ride. I ended up selling them on and getting some Giro shoes for off-road use.
