Mast Stepping C-22

- An easy method for stepping the mast of a Catalina 22 sailboat using "Mast Up" crutch, jib halyard and trailer winch. New to trailer sailing, we learned about this method when we met C-22 Fleet 77 sailors during the 2017 Northern Gulf Coast Cruise.
I like this approach. Using the job halyard and trailer winch seems like the easiest solve I've seen on TH-cam.
We just bought our first sailboat and have no experience. We joined the Catalina 22 owner's FB group and Larry Epps gave me the name of your youtube page. We live just south of you in Bluffton SC. This is the first video we have found to show us exactly how to raise the mast. We tried once without the mast stepper and between 4 people, we almost took out the dining room window. We have since ordered the mast stepper from Catalina Direct and cannot wait to receive it so as to follow this video step by step. So, thank you so much and looking forward to seeing any and all other "how to" videos you have on your channel.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Glad we were able to give you some pointers. We've had Seanachai for almost 6 years and we're learning something new every time we sail or do some maintenance. Highly recommend the C-22 Association membership and the great articles in MAINBRACE. Thanks for subscribing...all the best to you with your new adventures!
Liz - just discovered your channel and I’m loving all the great content. Some the clearest and best presented info on Catalina 22’s on the web. I’m in Australia and trying to secure a Boomaroo 22 , the Australian made version of the Cat 22 - there were plenty made here but they are all tightly held.
Thanks so much for the very kind words. All the best in your search, and I hope you find exactly what you're looking for...these boats are so enjoyable. Seananchai has been really good for us, on so many levels.
Wow, beautiful & relaxing calm waters. Liz, my Dad would have loved your all videos. He enjoyed anything to do with boating, fishing, water!! I miss him❣
I miss you, too❣
Can't wait to catch up. 🤗
Thanks for sharing. I’ve only stepped the mast on mine twice; actually up once and down once. We got out Catalina 22 last year and kept it in a slip until November. I will need a lot more practice before I feel very comfortable stepping it. The ground is not perfectly level where I launch and I keep fearing the mast will fall to one side and damage the mast or tabernacle. Anyhow, thanks again!
Not long after we purchased our 1986 "New Style" Swing Keel Catalina 22, we found a slip in a local marina. Seanachai was ready to get underway for a day sail in less than 30 minutes. We hauled her out to prepare for the 2017 Northern Gulf Coast Cruise, but when we returned from the trip, there were no slips available. While we wait for our next "home port," we're coping with being trailer sailors. This method for raising the mast was one of the many things we learned from more seasoned trailer sailors of Fleet 77 out of Ft. Walton Beach, FL. We launched from a boat ramp about 20 minutes from home, motored to a different local marina as transient guests for the weekend.
Looks good. How would it work if you were single handed? Do you have something to keep the mast centered and stopping it from falling off to one side or the other?
I am usually launching my boat on my own. My system is more elaborate due to that, but I like the simplicity of yours. Great video.
Hi @huntsail3727, wish I could give some advice about raising the mast single handed...we never have. But thanks for the kind comments. Best of luck!
Would the process be any different if you were leaving your headsail furler on as you stepped the mast?
Yes, @filmsbyphil. We learned this method by watching other C22 trailer sailors. Check out our videos "Destination: Charleston" and "Destination: McClellanville (#1 and #5) to see how the seasoned sailors handle the furling gear.
looks easy with no roller furling and a 50 pound Geona
Yes, John Beasley, it's a lot easier without the roller furling. At the time we made this video, we were not using the furling gear. Now that we're back at the marina, it's not an issue!
@@lizmccafferty-seanachai3694 I have such a difficult time putting the mast up and down by myself with the roller furling, the mast falls over to one side.
