Community servers were the initial backbone of TF2, before Valve decided to make a universally consistent server matchup using the Quickplay system. So going to community servers isn't that bad of an idea to do. However, thanks the overall changes for servers between Gun Mettle and Tough Break, and then the introduction of Casual in MyM, C.S. had been on a decline up until the bot crisis, so a lot of traditional and/or legendary servers had gone silent or extinct. So TF2 Community Servers are fine, if you can figure out the ancient UI. If you're pissed off that Skial is 90% of all servers, don't worry, we're pissed off too.

Ive only started playing tf2 about a month ago and its honestly amazing that the game, despite being 16 years old, still has such an active community! People making animations, custom content, videos about strategies, for a game that hasnt been given a major update in about 7+ years is so amazing and incredible, even with the bot crisis Even if valve one day closes the servers, the community will find a work around, and thats what makes it so special and unique
as someone on tumblr with friends who also play tf2 who don’t have tumblr, you are not alone. i’d actually say a majority of tf2’s player base have never sought out external tf2 media, including fan content.

I am new to your channel, but I love TF2 to death and I recently got back into playing it (two weeks ago). I think you hit the nail on the head for many of the endearing and frustrating qualities of the state of TF2 right now. Great video! I do want to point out there is legitimately only 1 person on the active development team, Eric Smith, and Valve allows its developers to choose what to work on, which TF2 is probably on the bottom of many peoples' lists. There is just very little manpower, but I agree the game can be revived if just a little bit changes.
Botting and Cheating also extends to CS2 and Dota 2 to a lesser extent. Unfortunately Valve straight up doesn't have enough man power to deal with any of this due to their corporate structure only hiring for senior positions, and the ones that do get hired would rather not deal with this.

As a fervent heavy main with nearly 400hrs on tf2 and an artist who once in a blue moon does tf2 fanart I agree with most of this video, the way Valve has treated this game is an OURIGHT SHAAAME as a business stand point, how effing DARE THEY on keeping on selling us a product that's on the condition that's been for years I've been seriously thinking if it would be legally possible to sue valve on the mistreatment of their consumer base, the bot problem is just disgusting and they still charge us for some HELLA EXPENSIVE in game items. On the other hand I sort of agree and disagree on the tumblr side of things, While there is amazing and awesome artists who bring the characters to life there's also the political side of tumblr that never really left, and while yes some of these issues are important considering how much TF2 avoids talking politics and serious subject matters it does look out of place, but ever since the tumblr exodus it has gotten quite tame. So it's more like roulette on what you'll find on tumblr some shit is fucking good, some shit is very questionable and a there's a lot of projection but I'm not going to judge that because people sometimes to need the help of fictional characters to express something they find difficult to understand. There is one thing of note because I do have an account there but I almost don't post my art to begin with, but I've obeserved that there is a lot of genuine LGBT members in tf2 community both male gay and lesbian women, and those in between, and I find it really interesting how Heavy and the Medic is kind of picked by a lot of them (maybe not in gameplay but more in a symbolic type of way, not all I do know that Engineer/Soldier also has their own mini-fanbase, though there is this fuyoshi type of vibe going on with Sniper/Spy, I can be wrong because I don't know any of the content creators but they just fit right in lol, it's fan instinct) But I think it helps that these characters are genuinely manly, while they're cartoons and exagerated versions of sterotypes and outright demented, they also have a cool and atractive side to them so I can see why people can pine for the characters heck you've seen the fandom *tik tok joji flashbacks* Also Let's not forget how much fuel THE MOTHERHUMPING VOICE ACTORS HAVE BEEN GIVING TO THE HEAVY AND THE MEDIC LMAO, seriously the VA's are a treasure and while we don't have the whole team toguether because one it's imposible, 2 sometimes life happens, I think it's lovely to see our grandparents just go along and do silly videos and gatherings for the community. There has been a lot of joking from people who made the game with those two ever two of the comics artists shipped the characters, they're not a couple but my god is there so much propaganda for it HAHHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH :'D But I do wonder if the voice actors are inspiring new talent to become voice actors, I am so grateful that after all these years they still love the characters and they have still decided to colaborate with the community even when we have only a potted plant and the janitor working half time to the game. There's not a lot of movement on devianart anymore since the platform has been absolutely hedious in treating their own artist and pursuing AI generated stuff so fanbases are dying there, THERE IS HOWEVER a lot of older artwork. and on Artstation there's a lot more workshop stuff but everyonce in a while there's some cool fanart but not a lot. You're better off on twitter, tumblr, and reddit and instagram, that's the most artwork I've seen.
I remember when I played TF2 at a summer camp for young game developers when I was 12-13 (the biggest dork). Our camp counselors went by their video game handles or games they loved to play, but I believe our counselor Warhammer snuck us out of our rooms late from our bunks to get to the gaming square and play an array of games till midnight -- it probably was like 10 o'clock, but it felt like midnight. I was already scarred from my time playing Minecraft (long story), but there was this kid I had a crush on who was playing TF2 with some other people i sparked friendships with and I had the bright idea to try and impress them the entire time in the most awkward way possible, but we all fell in love with playing TF2 with each other. Needless to say, we all lost contact after camp, years later one of them reached out to me, using my gamer name at the time they found on a scrap piece of paper I wrote on back then. Lol but they told me about them heading to college. Didn't keep touch after that, but idk TF2 tickles a particular itch in my brain and I'd love to get back into it, this is video hit me in the nostalgia and I'll be thinking about this for a while. I had been exposed to tf2 since maybe 2015 when I got internet access, but only recently did I get into the game itself and the comics, since I have only recently got a computer that can run it. My first computer I got in 2021. An old office computer from 2011 that could barely run Minecraft Bedrock. I instantly fell in love with the work and characters, and have been hyperfixated on it for the last couple months. I'm even planning to cosplay Engineer at my local comic con in October. I'm nearly 21 years old at this point and it astounds me just how much I adore a game that came out when I was *5*. I really hope that one day, we see the bot crisis taken care of. Actually, I recently heard that some guy from Australia has privately been developing his own anti-cheat for the game to help with the bot issue. I also adore what the VAs have been doing to help keep the community alive.

One thing to note about Valve being able to do big updates is that only 2 people are working on the game so it will take them a while to be able to actually put out these big updates
I have noticed that every match have its own eco sistem, usualy 1-4 in score board its friendlys, 4-9 its normal players that usualy just started playing game and 9-12 place its gamers or tryhards but dont be Surprised if enemy tryhard kills friendly and he is now at 1 place in acore board, a lot of friendlys its guys that becomed too good at game so they chilling and meming mostly, but when friendlyness is interapted they lock in.
the main thing that keeps me actively playing tf2 are Spy's backstabs and trickstabs. And since tf2 is perfect overall i won't stop playing this masterpiece game!
i have met so many people, had so many timeless expierences all from the people i've met on this game. I find the game also being super solid being a bonus at this point

There was an update on April 18, 2024, and it KILLED the Mac version outright. Can't launch the game because the executable cannot be found. So yeah, Valve IS working on it, but only to make sure Mac users are being shit on.
I am 19, i played the game for like 2 months and I really fell i love with it. Also didnt get to witness the bot crisis, so i am lucky i guess? Not planning to abandon it for a long time

It actually makes me happy to see people that picked it up recently. If the game ever dies, my life support system will automatically shut off because its powered by the tf2 servers
honestly i think its the gameplay, something about the way everything is structured so you can pour 100 hours into scout and do dogshit but somehow somewhere along the line between 100-120 you become an unkillable god ruling over your domain (harvest), also the sandbox of weapons and game mechanics keeps every fight different but not random, basically its cause you can kill everybody in the lobby just pan-scouting
same thing with rocket jumping, you spend forever doing basically the same jump and after some amount of time everything opens up and every surface or model or fence becomes a platform for the sickest (useless) series of jumps ever
They recently have an update, an anticheat update. It is surprisingly keeping bots away, though sadly the bot hosters will probably find a way around it. But it is a win for TF2 atleast

Trigger warning: Yapping. I met my wife through Tumblr TF2 OC Roleplay. I am slowly inching towards 6k hours of official TF2 servers... and I miss it. Being stuck in community servers of absolue brainrot because Valve refuses to save us: because they simply believe that TF2 will never make them "enough money" to refund then 10x pay out for the effort. I watch this passion rot while it still lays in my heart. These Mercs hold onto my soul... I won't let them go. I refuse. The Mercs will enter Public Domain before I let these stories go. My current dream is for valve to just hire a dedicated number of talented fans as a pure tf2 team, and keep the game going. As in, they fix the bots, and also create new updates. It will also make them official updates and not jsut community updates
Cause this game is one of a kind, the mechanics of the classes and balance of the weapons is something that no shitty overwatch or call of duty can even dream of replicating.

hacking is a issue that is in EVERY fps game right now, in fact. CS2 is having A HUGE hacking spike at the moment making it impossible to enjoy that game too. IF cs2 the most popular game on steam isn't getting hacking fixed i doubt tf2 is ever getting hackers removed ever
The problem with the bot crisis is that valve is backed into a corner. The code for the game is over 10 years old and it is very messy. If a tf2 dev went and tried to fix the bot crisis it would be like giving a monkey a screw driver and a box of power tools. One thing they can attempt to do though is replace the source engine with source 2. The main reason the bots are here is because the current source code was leaked a few years back. If they take the time to replace it with a newer/modern version, that could be our best bet. Lets just hope that Valve actually takes the time to do it though.

You make an interesting inquiry into how the game survives despite the developers utter nonexistent acknowledgment of the game’s existence, but in some ways it’s actually a benifit. Lots of games are ruined by the bad choices of their developers, because they did something little that ruins the experience. Valve will never do ANYTHING. EVER. It has never done anything for years now. Nothing will change valves business tactic of “do nothing” because it makes them millions daily. The most controversial thing they’ve done in recent memory was disabling communication in text and voice chat for free to play accounts. Any other game would call that greed, but it solved a genuine problem of the bots voice spam. Valve may be lazier than any company in existence, but they aren’t stupid.
Valve wont ruin a game with updates, the game itself doesnt allow for that. The game just needs maintenance. Common maintenance for such a played game.

Wonderful editing and presentation! Alongside the bot crisis, I feel like the game itself suffers most from its playerbase. You mentioned how you found TF2 from Tumblr and I think that's amazing. I would definitely love to see more of that side present in the playerbase and TH-cam sphere because due to the game's age and lack of proper moderation, bigots run rampant through the community. Being a woman or any sort of minority is unfortunately going to be a pretty terrible experience for a lot of people. That's not even going into the daunting difficulty curve of learning the game yourself. I think for the longevity of TF2, these alternative spaces on sites like Tumblr are going to be incredibly valuable for not only producing art, but also making TF2 a more appealing game for new players to try out who don't fit into the stereotypical nerdy white guy mold.

There's not a lot of movement on devianart anymore since the platform has been absolutely hedious in treating their own artist and pursuing AI generated stuff so fanbases are dying there, THERE IS HOWEVER a lot of older artwork. and on Artstation there's a lot more workshop stuff but everyonce in a while there's some cool fanart but not a lot.
You're better off on twitter, tumblr, and reddit and instagram, that's the most artwork I've seen.

TF2 has always seemed like a stange case to me
I remember when I played TF2 at a summer camp for young game developers when I was 12-13 (the biggest dork). Our camp counselors went by their video game handles or games they loved to play, but I believe our counselor Warhammer snuck us out of our rooms late from our bunks to get to the gaming square and play an array of games till midnight -- it probably was like 10 o'clock, but it felt like midnight.
I was already scarred from my time playing Minecraft (long story), but there was this kid I had a crush on who was playing TF2 with some other people i sparked friendships with and I had the bright idea to try and impress them the entire time in the most awkward way possible, but we all fell in love with playing TF2 with each other.
Needless to say, we all lost contact after camp, years later one of them reached out to me, using my gamer name at the time they found on a scrap piece of paper I wrote on back then. Lol but they told me about them heading to college. Didn't keep touch after that, but idk TF2 tickles a particular itch in my brain and I'd love to get back into it, this is video hit me in the nostalgia and I'll be thinking about this for a while. You did amazing, thanks for sharing the love on the community!

its true but, valve now is becaming a hardware studio rn, but valve will not stop making games or something, i think valve should just make the community able to make updates, bc i'm sure that valve will not do anything for tf2, even for the bot crisis, is kinda impossible to get rid of those bots

I had been exposed to tf2 since maybe 2015 when I got internet access, but only recently did I get into the game itself and the comics, since I have only recently got a computer that can run it. My first computer I got in 2021. An old office computer from 2011 that could barely run Minecraft Bedrock. I instantly fell in love with the work and characters, and have been hyperfixated on it for the last couple months. I'm even planning to cosplay Engineer at my local comic con in October. I'm nearly 21 years old at this point and it astounds me just how much I adore a game that came out when I was *5*.
I really hope that one day, we see the bot crisis taken care of. Actually, I recently heard that some guy from Australia has privately been developing his own anti-cheat for the game to help with the bot issue. I also adore what the VAs have been doing to help keep the community alive.
Honestly I feel like we should be pushing valve to do SOMETHING but I feel like more likely they’re gonna pull the plug on this game

One thing to note about Valve being able to do big updates is that only 2 people are working on the game so it will take them a while to be able to actually put out these big updates

I have noticed that every match have its own eco sistem, usualy 1-4 in score board its friendlys, 4-9 its normal players that usualy just started playing game and 9-12 place its gamers or tryhards but dont be Surprised if enemy tryhard kills friendly and he is now at 1 place in acore board, a lot of friendlys its guys that becomed too good at game so they chilling and meming mostly, but when friendlyness is interapted they lock in.

the main thing that keeps me actively playing tf2 are Spy's backstabs and trickstabs. And since tf2 is perfect overall i won't stop playing this masterpiece game!

There was an update on April 18, 2024, and it KILLED the Mac version outright. Can't launch the game because the executable cannot be found. So yeah, Valve IS working on it, but only to make sure Mac users are being shit on.
I am 19, i played the game for like 2 months and I really fell i love with it. Also didnt get to witness the bot crisis, so i am lucky i guess? Not planning to abandon it for a long time

It actually makes me happy to see people that picked it up recently. If the game ever dies, my life support system will automatically shut off because its powered by the tf2 servers
honestly i think its the gameplay, something about the way everything is structured so you can pour 100 hours into scout and do dogshit but somehow somewhere along the line between 100-120 you become an unkillable god ruling over your domain (harvest), also the sandbox of weapons and game mechanics keeps every fight different but not random, basically its cause you can kill everybody in the lobby just pan-scouting
same thing with rocket jumping, you spend forever doing basically the same jump and after some amount of time everything opens up and every surface or model or fence becomes a platform for the sickest (useless) series of jumps ever

They recently have an update, an anticheat update. It is surprisingly keeping bots away, though sadly the bot hosters will probably find a way around it. But it is a win for TF2 atleast

Being stuck in community servers of absolue brainrot because Valve refuses to save us: because they simply believe that TF2 will never make them "enough money" to refund then 10x pay out for the effort.

Cause this game is one of a kind, the mechanics of the classes and balance of the weapons is something that no shitty overwatch or call of duty can even dream of replicating.

hacking is a issue that is in EVERY fps game right now, in fact. CS2 is having A HUGE hacking spike at the moment making it impossible to enjoy that game too. IF cs2 the most popular game on steam isn't getting hacking fixed i doubt tf2 is ever getting hackers removed ever

The problem with the bot crisis is that valve is backed into a corner. The code for the game is over 10 years old and it is very messy. If a tf2 dev went and tried to fix the bot crisis it would be like giving a monkey a screw driver and a box of power tools. One thing they can attempt to do though is replace the source engine with source 2. The main reason the bots are here is because the current source code was leaked a few years back. If they take the time to replace it with a newer/modern version, that could be our best bet. Lets just hope that Valve actually takes the time to do it though.

You make an interesting inquiry into how the game survives despite the developers utter nonexistent acknowledgment of the game’s existence, but in some ways it’s actually a benifit. Lots of games are ruined by the bad choices of their developers, because they did something little that ruins the experience. Valve will never do ANYTHING. EVER. It has never done anything for years now. Nothing will change valves business tactic of “do nothing” because it makes them millions daily. The most controversial thing they’ve done in recent memory was disabling communication in text and voice chat for free to play accounts. Any other game would call that greed, but it solved a genuine problem of the bots voice spam. Valve may be lazier than any company in existence, but they aren’t stupid.
Valve wont ruin a game with updates, the game itself doesnt allow for that. The game just needs maintenance. Common maintenance for such a played game.

Wonderful editing and presentation! Alongside the bot crisis, I feel like the game itself suffers most from its playerbase. You mentioned how you found TF2 from Tumblr and I think that's amazing. I would definitely love to see more of that side present in the playerbase and TH-cam sphere because due to the game's age and lack of proper moderation, bigots run rampant through the community. Being a woman or any sort of minority is unfortunately going to be a pretty terrible experience for a lot of people. That's not even going into the daunting difficulty curve of learning the game yourself. I think for the longevity of TF2, these alternative spaces on sites like Tumblr are going to be incredibly valuable for not only producing art, but also making TF2 a more appealing game for new players to try out who don't fit into the stereotypical nerdy white guy mold.
