I think we all have a knife purgatory. Mostly consists of knives I completely messed up sharpening when I thought I could be like Ken Onion…. I even bought his sharpworks belt grinder to destroy my knives even faster…… I pretty much inhaled my knives after that. Man what a regretful phase!
TBH, I don't. I have a bench grinder with a pair of stone wheels, a pair of paper wheels, and a cloth wheel, plus a diamond disc on a disc grinder for shaping. I use my knives until they break then I give them a new tip . I guess the closest thing to a knife purgatory I have is my fishing knife box, but I still use them. If I need a new beater I just buy a cheap machete and shape it down to purpose. P.S I did just get a Vanax blade, so we'll see if that retires a few old timers, or at least how long it does
Fascinating how you manage to make a great video out of everything. Here I am honestly enjoying watching a guy clean out a drawer in the shed. Love this channel.
The Dozier and Tuff Lite are ideal for having handy at a regular home work station (or chicken coop), on the rare occasion you don't have anything else handy or your M390 blade suggests using them when it sees all the gummy tape on a package that needs opening...
This best of old, shoulda-been iconic Ontario folders in AUS-8 is the 'Utilitac II' designed by Joe Pardue, son of Mel (of Benchmade fame). It's still dirt cheap and outshines the RAT all day. I recently discovered that the Utilitac II was actually pushed to be Ontario's forerunner model after the RAT's designer fell out of favor for some blade world scandal of yesteryear. (He's the R in the RAT acronym). Love ya, Pete, appreciate the hell outta your channel
This video is so relatable. I have my regular edc knives in a cheap hanging pouch on the wall. The other ones I don't carry are in a spyderpack stuffed away and the ones that don't fit there are thrown in a box in a drawer. And we all keep buying more stuffing more in a drawer. It's a vicious cycle.
20:00 For shame, Mr. Outdoors! The Higonokami knife is the single most versatile knife on this fine planet! I have a 7cm Higonokami on the bench next to me as I angrily type. A useless knife? I beg to differ! For one, it is an excellent toothpick mass-production tool. I cut long skewers into three equal lengths, then fashion toothpicks from the blanks. The Higonokami is the best tool for the job. Further, my Higonokami keeps me occupied for minutes at a time, honing the edge on a ceramic rod to create hair-whittling edges. Also, the non-locking, gradually loosening pivot makes it ideal for First Aid laceration dressing training, as well as reflex training. And finally, my great-grandfather had a Higonokami when he lived in the Tanami Desert, and he would regale me with stories of how he hunted, killed, and dressed wild camels with just that very knife. So, no. I must disagree, learned Sir. The Higonokami is even more versatile than my Asobi.
That last awesome Opinel pruning knife has been on my list for about 4 years! 😅 Thanks for helping me realize it would most likely also end up in my plastic tub of "Edc Never".💁♂ lol
It’s really excellent for clearing vines and weeds, plus harvesting vegetables. Perfectly designed for pull-cutting. The safety tip makes sense, because you can’t effectively use the tip anyway. And like all Opinels, it’s extremely light.
A really useful overview of What Not To Get. I'm glad you shared this with the knife community. I follow your channel and enjoy your videos. Best wishes from Cincinnati, Ohio USA!
I actually have some of those knives. They are in my overflow drawer also. Sometimes knives seem great on paper, but then when you get them they are not that good like the Feldspar. Love your videos!
I also bought the Gerber/Bear G combo stuff at the beginning of my knife sickness. Absolutely made me never purchase another thing by Gerber. Great job Gerber!
i had the fixed place 😂 but honestly gerber american made knives are solid. the 06 auto is built like a damn tank and has been proven for over a decade
For blade repair, I have a gallon of 30% vinegar I use for rust removal and resurfacing. After that I'm obsessed with Teflon lubes. If the rust is deep I wrap the blade in paper towel and soak it with the vinegar, if it's surface I just use a cloth to rub it on
Well done Pete another totalling enjoyable video. I loved the reasoning behind your house or shed draw justification. You will love the Baby Banter look forward to you testing that little beauty. The Hummingbird looked great that should really get taken back to the house! I can't believe you have the Batman knife mine was taken by the Australian Men In Black, along with my Pouched Bat -errang prop version throwing knives bought for static display purposes, and the occasional picking of high growing mangoes Lol 🥭 😳 👏 😀. You must be blessed by customs to receive them for review. Love the channel looking forward to your fixed blade list of House vs Shed drawer keeper's.
My R2D2 is on of my favorite knives, so I carry it occasionally. I gave away my early Kershaws, Gerbers and such for a charity raffle a few years ago, miss none of them. An early Element, Baby Banter and Spyderco Native 5 in Spy 27 are my most regular carries. I keep seeing other knives I like, but I got a couple and just don't find myself carrying them. I have what I need, evidently.
Very cool, love all your videos bro, keep up the great work, the first real edge retention testing I learned was yours, I have a small paper pad full of information from your videos and testing, my standard for edge retention is still Sisal rope, I watch others do cardboard cutting by the foot, which is fine I suppose, but my go to is still sisal rope, every quality knife I bought or steel I bought I came here first to see if you had done testing and reviews, that means every knife or different steel I have is because of your recommendations, the only ones I have that didn't get your recommendation is knives given to me by friends and family, your channel is a great wealth of information, please keep going, we absolutely do appreciate it and absolutely do use your testing and recommendation for knife buying
Lots of weird knives! I do like a lock lock on liner lock folding knives I intend to use gutting deer. It's really easy to unlock the blade inadvertently with the thumb when holding the knife with edge pointing up.
That SOG Terminus XR is a fantastic knife to get as an intro to lots of different knife features for a very reasonable price and good quality at the same time. ~$50 gets you G10 scales, thumb studs, flipper, axis/crossbar lock and a reversible tip-up deep carry clip so righties or lefties are accomdated. So you get three different opening mechanisms, G10 scales and D2 steel on a fully ambidextrous knife for ~$50. And there's an option for S35VN and carbon fiber if you want to go a little higher end. Got one for my son and he loves being able to choose between thumb, flip, or flick to open it.
You still have your first knife ... and it looks almost new . You are not a genXer , thats for sure , lol . Good video . Make another one like it in 30 to 40 years
Love the vid as always Pete. If you ever feel like parting with the Yorkie or the Hummingbird, let me know. Then again, I've also got a few I've been trying to get rid of too. So if you need to choose someone else, I get it. Just seem to be hitting hard times since covidays and I haven't been able to feed any habit over and above keeping the heat on and eating regular. Blah, blah, blah. I appreciate the hell out of the content though in any case. You're a good egg and an aneurotypical steel nerd after me own heart. May Bricky smile down upon you. 🥴
Fun Fact: The Opinel 'Pruning Knife' was prototyped as the 'Scrotum Slicer' and was going to be marketed to professional Roo shooters in Australia. Apparently, PeTA got wind of it and convinced Opinel, who had already spent close to a billion dollars in research and development, to rebrand it as a plant pruning blade. I'll bet you didn't know that little factoid...
I swear it is the same kind of knife that my grandad carried in the farm and it is a traditional shape for farmers in north east of Italy. Despite the Australian man not looking enthusiast this shape is great for picking fruits, vegetables, cutting ropes and other kind of task without looking as a weapon (although Americans love knives that looks like weapon this is not a thing for everybody).
I have a 2 sr1 lites. It's great if you are doing some outdoor work or you need something for hard use work. Pretty sure it took a trash can to the face.
Three drawer queens... Spyderco Yojimbo. That slender tip needs careful handling, and I wasn't careful enough. Broke about 15mm off, now it sits. My fault, not Spyderco's. CRKT M21. Uncomfortable in hand, hate the pocket clip, which is forever snagging on things, and maybe I got a bad batch of steel but it won't stay sharp worth a damn. Kershaw Rake. I loved this knife at first, but then I discovered that the slightest tap on the spine would cause the lock to fail. I could quite literally force failure with my little finger. Yeah nah, into the drawer it went.
Great video! Love my keen too. If you want to get a new one, kaviso did a new version of it in 2022 with less branding on the blade. Might be worth checking?
I have a box of knives I don't carry for the following reasons : -The knife is attractive, but not particularly useful. An Impulse purchase! -The (expensive) knife features premium scales, blade, mirror polished surfaces, rare wood, and or gem stone inlays or unique hardware, etc, I'M AFRAID TO SCRATCH, DIRTY , OR LOSE IT! -Too large to carry effectively - Some knives are super useful, but ugly, or feature weird, loud colors, that I'm not keen to show off YES, I SADLY WASTE MONEY FREQUENTLY
for me I just use an old timer very small folder as my carry knife. Some old imperial ireland blade you'd get for 50 cents at a yardsale. realized I didn't need anything else, and if I do it's gonna be a fixed blade.
I never really liked Kershaw knives, I've always found them to be just…meh; not bad but nothing that sets them apart from anyone else. That said, I've seen a few different M390 comparison between Lionsteel, Benchmade, Spyderco and a few others. I was REALLY surprised to find in all of them that Kershaw's M390 had the highest HRC out of all of them. It wasn't a negligible amount either, a couple were up past 63 when Spyderco came in second as 61. So they have that going for them.
I love your videos. I've been watching them for a long time. I propose that if you can invest in high quality sharpening equipment, you can invest in a large cigar humidor, that could be stored in your shed area, and still keep the knives in the ideal atmospheric condition. Bonus all of the likely logical places in which to store the knives, substituted for cigars! Second bonus for a TH-cam content producer to suggest an idea that other knife lovers with prodigious collections might like, and you're welcome to steal it without credit if it works for you. Even if you only had crappy knives, at a certain number threshold, that's a legitimate monetary investment to protect, let alone for good knives. I use high quality gun oils to protect the metal of m knives, and that works the very best for me once they are clean and prepped. I used to live 1/4 mi from the ocean and rust was a prodigious problem for my non stainless steel blades if I did not address it proactively. Worth a shot? -Cheers
That is the No. 8 Pruning Knife. The No. 8 Mushroom knife has a shorter blade with less curvature and a brush on the other end. I think the handles are identical however. I bought one to be my token hawkbill. On the rare occasion that's something I actually need, it works very well, but the reverse-curvature handle and inability to cut basically anything on a table definitely makes it poorly suited to general utility use.
Hi i like the crkt sketch, i like the blade shape but the rubberised parts appeal to me more as i have grip issues and most metal and a lot of plastic knives dont give enough grip but the black rubber parts on this particular knife would be great for my needs :-) i have an old buck knife with black rubber handles but because it has not cut in the blade to help open it i no longer use it as i have to get my multi too out just to open the knife!!!!
Great collection videos, Pete. Besides the fixed blade video upcoming, will you be doing a multitool collection video as well? ...that tent stake puller from gerber makes me unreasonably angry on the inside,... it kind of gives me the same emotion as witnessing animal abuse.
I had customs take a flipper once, sent in a very carefully worded appeal with a ton of evidence, got back a flat rejection telling me they were keeping it. Knife showed up two days later..... I decided not to ask questions. I would love to order some OTF autos, seriously don't see how they're any more dangerous but that drum has already fallen apart from the beating.
"F u and your Kizer Knives" LOL. "Gerber, what a peice of shiat". LOLOLO!!! My knife purgatory is an old Amazon box from 6 years ago full of Bucks, Kershaws, Gerber, 420hc, 8crmov, D2 when D2 was hot. Great video!
Do you think you were being a bit harsh with regards to the good ole' K-Bar Dozier? They're cheap and cheerful and last for years with regular daily use (e.g. warehousing). Simplicity itself to touch up with the (equally cheap and cheerful Lansky 4-rod Turn Box) they still sell well and nobody's going to be weeping into his cornflakes if he loses one.
I really dislike how you put my Baby Boy in the drawer. It might be like ten bucks too pricey, but it is probably the most comfortable knife I've ever used, ESPECIALLY with the Unlocked Composites scales EDIT: by baby boy I mean baby banter, I have the red bladed version with some red tweezers in the aftermarket carbon scales, I carry it absolutely every day and rotate my larger folder/fixie and I'm super happy with the performance and sharpenability of Nitro V. Even if it's edge retention is a little, LITTLE bit wanting, it is still my favorite absolute EVERYDAY carry blade that I've owned so far (to be fair, I'm only about 3 years into the actual enthusiast side of carrying a knife, so my collection of good blades is about 14-16)
I like Australia Man. I like when Australia Man make content about edges. Australia Man is Positive influence in edge Community. Thank you.
Sounds like a They Might Be Giants song
Long live Australia Man!

Always good to go knife shopping in your own drawer. Came away with at least a couple of good "re-purchases."

Oh and in the Netherlands we are not allowed to carry pocket knives which you can open with one hand

The new Civivi Elementum button lock has a lil flipper, which would absolutely get it over the threshold & into the house for me.

Dude! CRKT on the same "not house worthy" drawer as GEC, a Buck 110 and Spyderco?
I love refurbishing things if you have something that was one reading and not completely neglected, I will take it.
Tool belt reviews would be good
Bit late but Ganzo runs those knives at like 60-61 HRC. could be interesting
I wanted one of those massdrop perpetuas.
Do you think you were being a bit harsh with regards to the good ole' K-Bar Dozier? They're cheap and cheerful and last for years with regular daily use (e.g. warehousing). Simplicity itself to touch up with the (equally cheap and cheerful Lansky 4-rod Turn Box) they still sell well and nobody's going to be weeping into his cornflakes if he loses one.
for..... reasons. I know that feeling
I want all purple knives!
Interested in unloading any of these at a fair price? Possible to ship to New York, USA?
Upset about the Latt Vind, that's simply a mistake
tfw Pete's reject collection is 5x better than your actual collection.
When’s Pete getting into watches!?! I can relate to so many things in your videos. Humor is spot on. Was your dad a milk man too?
😂
Any Spyderco folder for sale from there?
There was at least 3 or 4 in that bunch that I wouldn’t mind carrying. The rest were pretty meh and I get why they are in the shed.
Oh so many of those I wanted to buy at one time. After watching this I'm glad I didn't! They would have ended up in "a drawer" too.
I would like that 20cv 110
I really dislike how you put my Baby Boy in the drawer. It might be like ten bucks too pricey, but it is probably the most comfortable knife I've ever used, ESPECIALLY with the Unlocked Composites scales
EDIT: by baby boy I mean baby banter, I have the red bladed version with some red tweezers in the aftermarket carbon scales, I carry it absolutely every day and rotate my larger folder/fixie and I'm super happy with the performance and sharpenability of Nitro V.
