Tesla Model Y Coast to Coast Road Trip/Camp Mode 5,700 Miles!! - Part 1

  • I took our Tesla Model Y on the most epic road trip, from The Atlantic Coast in Florida, to the Pacific Coast in California. The total trip was 7 days and 5,730 miles!
    During the trip, I took full advantage of the utility of the Tesla Model Y by utilizing Camp Mode to sleep in the car. I used the mattress I helped to develop, which is a combination of the comfort of foam, and the portability of and air mattress. This means its super comfortable, and more portable than foam. The foam inside combined with the 4 valves means it can inflate all on its own.
    I also used my cooler/fridge that I have to bring drinks along and keep them nice and cool. During supercharging stops, I would usually grab a drink and stretch my legs. Most charging stops were about 25 minutes followed by a 2 hour drive.
    My car is equipped with Full Self driving, but FSD Beta was turned off to not have any strikes. I used Autopilot/FSD for 95%+ of the trip as it makes driving distances like this a breeze. That coupled with the ease and convenience of the Tesla Supercharging Network makes for the ultimate road warrior car.
    The California Tesla Takeover event hosted by Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley was located in San Luis Obispo, CA on Saturday. Over 2,300 people were in attendance, making it the largest Tesla event of the year. While there, I was able to sit down and interview Sandy Munro from MunroLive for an incredible exclusive and candid interview.
    This dream trip was an incredible adventure and highlights how electric cars CAN be great options for long distance road trips. I will continue to take road trips as often as I can and personally prefer our Tesla Model Y for these adventures.

    Spouse and I will be taking a 3900 mile road trip late September in our Tesla driving from Chicago to Vermont (fall colors), back to Chicago, and on to Arizona. We will be taking our time and camping the whole way. The packing is a bit more challenging with two people, but the Model Y has an amazing amount of cargo capacity. We like to stay at state parks along the way sleeping in the car and charging from a 50A electric post when possible. Our setup includes a Luno air mattress, TesCamp window blinds, and a Crown Shades popup canopy which we set up at our campsite for protection from sun and rain. We buy our food and drinks along the way cooking our evening meal outdoors in camp weather permitting. We stay at the campsite for a day (two nights) or more, then drive a full day covering about 500 miles to the next campsite. The car provides late evening entertainment (e.g. Netflix, TH-cam), and Tesla's Camp Mode keeps the perfect interior temperature all night for sleeping. Navigate on Autopilot, along with a couple 30 minute charging stops, makes driving a 500 mile day a snap. It's a fun and economical way to travel.

      My wife and a I are both 75. We got our Y in February. We have 13000 miles on it. Our first three trips were 2000, 2000 and 3000 miles. We live in Boulder and travel to Vermont a couple of times a year. The trip to Vt and on to North Carolina this spring was 5000 miles. We are going to Vermont at the end of September. We stay in motels. We have had no problems charging. It’s fun driving our YLD.

I joked that the 24% estimate would be used up if I ever make it to the lake. I was surprised it maintained 24% except for the times I drove over posted limit or passed someone. I arrived with 18% remaining. Sure will take away range anxiety on future trips.

    • @aguywithcats
      @aguywithcats ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@73av8r5 The idea is simple: you only need to charge enough to reach the next charging destination. If you are going from place A to place B, and the computer says to reach B you should leave A with 60% state of charge, then there is no reason to charge past 60%. Don't worry, there is a margin included so that you don't arrive at B with zero percent battery. Additionally, the time it takes to charge is not linear. When the battery state of charge is low, charging is very fast. As the battery gets more "full", the rate of charging slows. At the risk of over-generalizing, to go from 0% to 50% charge is very fast. To go from 50% to 100% takes a long time. So if you don't NEED to charge to a high percentage, you save a lot of time by not doing so! Only fill up as much as you need, not as much as you can.

      @@BeardedTeslaGuy Flat tires, minor accidents and bad drivers are a common site on a 5,700 mi road trip so I am glad you included that in your video. Just so you know with the exception of AZ. I find it easier to drive the Interstate highways rather than diverting to state roads. Reason, many ICE fuel stations are disappearing and I waste time trying to find open ICE fuel stations as many have closed.

    Great video! That was quite a trip damn... you are way nicer than I am, I would have chased that honda until I ran out of battery lol I never considered electric cars, never even looked at them, thought they were pimped out golf carts, a complete waste of money and time. Last weekend we drove to the city to shop for a new car for my wife, we drove past a tesla showroom, my wife really wanted to test drive the go carts, I didnt want to but figured meh it'll make her happy, she'll hate it and we'll never talk about it anymore... well I discovered a whole new level of customer service, I found out why there is almost a cult surrounding tesla, we fell in love with those cars so badly that we drove back out of the showroom with one the same day... even the kids fell in love, and they're used to the space/ comfort of minivans. I cant believe I waited that long to get into one, I cant wait to have some free time so that we can take the tesla on a long trip, those things are so fun to drive, the planning and navigation to chargers etc. makes it feel almost like planning a flight. I've always considered driving to be a waste of time, so we'd always try to take the plane instead of driving, especially on vacation, now it feels like driving somewhere will be a fun part of the trip, your video got me even more pumped! minus the crazy drivers out there...

    Justin, I have to say, this was the most practical real world Tesla video I’ve watched… and I’ve watched dozens since ordering my MYLR (which I pick up in 3 days) I watched the whole thing and learned a lot of things despite all of the other videos I’ve seen for others. Some items included map calculation nuances, how much charge camping mode takes per hour, how to handle it when you get to a low output charger etc. While subtle, these tips add up. This is my favorite vid so far related to a Tesla. I am planning a 900+ road trip in a few months and this has been really beneficial. One tip for you: … next time pack a night mask so even if one of the windows is leaking light, you’ll never notice. I am curious what your perfect goal is for charge left upon arriving at a destination. I am guessing 10 to 15%?
