Day 18: Stockholm, Sweden - This was a Stockholm food tour day. We started by visiting a couple of well known Swedish food halls, and then ate some more delicious Swedish food. It was an amazing day of visiting Stockholm!
00:25 Swedish breakfast at Courtyard Marriott - The Courtyard Marriott hotel in Stockholm had an impressive display of breakfast foods including plenty of Swedish food in the buffet as well. So we started off the day with breakfast at our hotel before starting off.
5:03 Hötorgshallen Food Hall - After walking around Stockholm for a while and fully enjoying the views of the city and the water, we made our way over to Hötorgshallen Food Hall, one of the Swedish food destinations on this Stockholm food tour day. After contemplating what to eat for a while, I settled on eating at a place called Melanders Fisk that specializes in seafood. Ying had the poached salmon and I had a the dill cured salmon (gravad lax). It was impressively good, the salmon was melt in your mouth tender and it was served with a side of potatoes as well. I also had toast skagen which are shrimp over toast. It’s one of my favorite Swedish foods. Total price - 370 SEK ($43.32)
12:32 Östermalmshallen Food Hall - Another legendary food hall in Stockholm is the gourmet Östermalmshallen Food Hall. It’s been around since 1888, but they’ve been doing renovation on the original market for the last couple years, so it’s a temporary market for now. The market has a lot of similar restaurants and gourmet food stalls as Hötorgshallen, and there’s no shortage of amazing looking food. After walking around for a while, since we had just eaten, I chose to buy some moose sausage, which was pretty good.
15:49 Östermalms Korvspecialist - Next stop on this Stockholm food tour is Östermalms Korvspecialist which is just a short walk from Östermalmshallen Food Hall and they specializes in marevelous sausages. I ordered the kabanoss, a spicy sausage filled into a baguette and seasoned with mustard and sauerkraut. It was a truly delicious sausage, I loved it. Kabanoss - 60 SEK ($7.02)
18:36 Gamla Stan - Gamla Stan is Old Stockholm and it’s filled with narrow medieval lanes, shops and restaurants, and it’s just a great place to walk around and explore. We stopped at the German Church and I just enjoyed the atmosphere and just walking around on foot.
21:44 Nystekt Strömming - When I asked you where to eat in Stockholm, one of the top places I was recommended over and over was Nystekt Strömming, a food stall that specializes in serving Baltic herries. They serve fresh herring, not the notorious Swedish fermented herring. I ordered strömming on rye which came with deep fried herring, mustard, onions, and dill on top. It was awesomely delicious. By this time on this Stockholm food tour day I was getting pretty full. Strömming - 40 SEK ($4.68)
So we ended the day here. It was a wonderful day in Stockholm eating lots of delicious food!

I don't understand what people are cribbing about!
I am Asian and I think Sweden is a Beautiful country and has lovely food!!
I love spicy Indian , Chinese and Sushi and Middle Eastern food too!
I love salmon with dill sauce and warm potatoes and also herring . And just my advice please taste the food before judging if it's good or bad ! But to each his own :)
If you don't like the food don't eat it ! No one is forcing you to visit Sweden also !
Stop criticising and bashing one cuisine to praise some other cuisine.

This reminds me: I remember decades ago there was a restaurant where I live, Los Angeles, Ca, called Scandia. They had a salmon dish called gravlaks. It’s salmon cured (but not smoked) in a liqueur called Aquavit. It was served with a creamy mustardy dill sauce. It was so delicious! Watching Mark’s video makes me feel I could eat nothing but Swedish food for the rest of my life!

Do you think a swedish restaurant would be successful if it opened in LA again?

    • @Rick_Hoppe
      @Rick_Hoppe 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@Tony-wu4wk Could another Scandinavian restaurant be popular in LA? Possibly...
But, Scandia was much more than its excellent Scandinavian food. A big part of it’s appeal was the service and the ambiance.
It was the last of the 50’s/60’s classy Continental fine dining restaurants. It had an attractive mid-Century design and decor. For men, jackets were required. Its waiters were full time professionals who took pride in their work. Sadly, Scandia closed its doors in 1989.
The question that interests ME is, could a new restaurant that re-creates the Scandia experience be successful again?

I think it's a shame that people is bashing the prices. YES it's expensive here. Not everything of course, and not everywhere either. He is after all in the capital where it tends to be more expensive than smaller cities. I get that Swedish food isn't for everyone, it's very rustic; meat, potatoes and sauce. We season often just with salt and pepper and that's that. With that said, it brings out the real taste of the product itself, instead of getting lost in a vortex of spices.
Give it a try! :) If you don't like the food, we're known for our architecture, beautiful people and music. Plenty to experience! :D

Continental Scandinavian food is often very underrated, people think it's going to be like British food but actually it is very well seasoned and has good texture. The only thing I'm not a fan of with Swedish food is the food that comes out of tubes--and it took me a while to be sold on the idea of pickled herring, but now I'm a fan.

Okay just clearing some things up!

Incorrect, my grandfather started fishing at the sea outside Vikbolandet in 1913. The difference between Sill and Strömming is a matter of size for him. The larger being strömming.
It is however the same species (Clupea harengus) and a geographic line between fish caught north of kalmar being called strömming has been suggested.
The smaller fish were however cured and called sill. Whilst the larger were fried and called strömming, with obvious accentual differences.

most of the people who are bashing Sweden forget that Sweden is a first world and not just any first , creme of the top first world , naturally the price of things gonna be "pricier".
If you want things at cheaper rate opt for other places, simple.

Nay, Sweden is expensive mainly because of its high taxation policy (both direct and indirect), because of which they are able to maintain their ultra generous social security system. Being an elite first world nation alone isn't the only reason. All Nordic nations have these systems in place. I doubt you'll find food and utilities in USA, Canada or Singapore as pricey.

I'd like to share with you my appreciation. Your video captures have prompted me take the time to experience food. I now approach food in terms of flavor and taste. For so long I would just eat as fast as possible and not take time to appreciate it. Food has become an experience for me. I take my time to really taste and appreciate the opportunity. I also take the time to understand, be grateful, and be in the moment. I eat much less now as a result but find myself more deeply looking for nuance; the layers of the experience. Your sharing has made me smile more in the experience as well. I hope that makes sense. Thank you!

Us Swedes really like Swedish strawberries, more than the imported ones. There is a reason why Swedish strawberries taste better. In the summer it's lighter longer here than in more southern locations so the berries have more time to make carbohydrates which make them sweeter. Try to compare Swedish strawberries to Belgian ones (which are the usual ones we import) and you'll taste the difference. They also have a deeper and more complex flavor than to imported ones.

Moose are among my favorite meats. Born and raised in Skellefteå, Sweden (far up north) and my father-in-law is a hunter, so we have the priviledge of getting some moose and deer during hunting seasons. :)
And then we have reindeer... I suppose it's a bit easier to get it up here than in Stockholm, simply due to the proximity of the Sami people, who live by herding reindeer in the northern parts of Sweden. Meat from reindeer truly is a delicacy.
Traditionally, at least up here, we eat it moose, reindeer and deer served more like a steak than in the form of a salami, however, a reindeer salami's great on slice of toast for breakfast.
I once served as a Royal Guard in Stockholm, and to be honest, I really miss those days and I have thought of enlisting once again. That uniform is nothing but a priviledge to wear and I am proud to say I wore one once.

You can't just ask people from Stockholm, the food-culture is very different all over the country (it's about 99 miles from the south to the north), I can give you a decent guiding :), how about trying some fermented herring for example? Or tunnbrödsrulle? Or smoked reindeer meat with morels sauce? So many dishes, from north to south...
