I am so happy to see that Sydney is getting new subscribers to her channel. She is such a sweet and intelligent young lady. She’s been through a lot and has handled it with grace. I hope she’ll get a million subs or more. Look out for her clothing line, single soul, she has some really gorgeous clothes.

When you talk about everything going to be okay….. when I was 20 years old, my mom was in a car accident that left her in a coma for 2 months. When she awoke, her personality was very different. I remember being so upset. I couldn’t accept any explanation I came up with as to why this happened. One day I was complaining to my dad about it. Saying maybe mom should have died. I will never forget his answer. He said he is so glad mom didn’t die. It’s okay. That life is short and his job is to take care of her and someday she will be made perfect in heaven and he can wait. Well! That made everything okay after that. Somehow his words healed me. It actually has made every obstacle in my life okay. Life is to learn how to love. That is the test

"A different life, but still an amazing life" WOW. I have a severe mental illness and I constantly wish I was "normal" and didn't have all of the challenges and emotions that I have to deal with. This quote is so inspiring and is making me look at things differently. It makes me think that I need to give up the notion and desire to be normal... and have a Different, but still an Amazing life. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and outlook.

Normal is over rated!! I am physically handicapped as well, but I still have a amazing, wonderful life! We can take heart that the pain we endure here is temporary, for God is faithful to see us through...I give all the credit to Jesus Christ, who came to save the world. He saved me in a huge way! I will be grateful and blessed for eternity...❤

I share the wish i were "normal "... I too have mental illnesses, from Traumatic events I couldn't accept or handle. Depression., Anhedonia is so inhumane to experience. I'm so unable to do anything, or go anywhere. It's mentally paralyzing, stuck in negative quicksand. I too seek inspiration. T.Y.⛓️🫶⛓️

As a 30yo woman who was disabled at 20, I really appreciate hearing about your journey thus far. I completely understand what you mean about how you wouldn't necessarily choose this situation but don't regret the process of becoming who you are. I still sometimes mourn the opportunities and experiences I didn't have as a function of my illness, but I'm also shamelessly proud of who I've become. I'm a firm believer that bad/traumatic things aren't "meant to be", but I do believe that terrible events can push us to do incredible things. And although my life didn't follow the trajectory I thought it would, I am still growing and improving and achieving in my own way. Seeing you reflect so eloquently on your experience is inspiring to me even 10 years on. It's true that things DO get better. Maybe not in exactly the way we expect, but there are so many ways for life to be good.

    • @JonathanGillies
      @JonathanGillies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm sorry you are disabled. :( Bad and traumatic things are only a part of our experience because our world is under the curse of man's sin. But God sent his Son to die to bear the punishment of the sins of all those who would trust in him. Please turn from your sins and ask God to forgive your sins because of Christ's sacrifice.

Hi,.. I wanted to say You're comment, really was inspiring for me. I'm unable to accept what happened to me.
Things can't be the way I want them. The way I've planned everything. Not being able to do the activities and hobbies I loved. There's more of course 😢. Depression hit me. , which made everything worse .. takes the want to live away. ... im struggling so badly. T.Y. 💕for being so strong, and a positive, attitude. 🎉

One of my friends from high school experienced a spinal cord stroke when she was young and had to navigate her youth so differently than the rest of our class. She just graduated college and from the outside looking in, it looks like she absolutely crushed it. Her college experience seemed to be so full of life and the same as her other peers. You’ve got this, your path may be different but you can do anything you want!

I never knew people who were paralyzed could possibly walk again...that is so cool and inspiring to know! I was hit by a car last year and had to relearn how to walk properly while using a walker for a couple months, and it was so hard to deal with everything taking longer and being more complicated to do. I'm glad you are healing and feeling happy, Sydney; your story is so inspiring!!!

Hi Sydney, 4 years ago I had exactly the same Staph aureus infection but a little higher up in my neck. Like you it was undiagnosed for a week and by the time the neurosurgeon drained it the spinal cord was damaged forever.
I have always wondered why it happened as it did ??
A few questions for you, sorry !
HOW DID STAPH GET INTO YOUR BLOODSTREAM? Do you have any idea ? Spider bite, or cut that took a while to heal and looked weird going a different colour (my case it was a white tailed spider).
WHY DID STAPH SETTLE WHERE IT DID IN YOUR BACK ?
My disease specialist told me that the stars and planet's have to align perfectly for this to happen as it's very very rare! He said my immune system was compromised and the bacteria settled at the weakest point on my spine where I had bad arthritis
Did you injure or have any problems in your back where the infection was ?
Recovery is a very long and slow process I have found. I can't believe I have had to learn to stand and walk again, simple tasks that you took for granted before. Neuropathy now in arms and legs is bad and unfortunately my neurosurgeon says it doesn't get better, although in a weird way I am getting used to it.
Looking forward to see how you go with the leg bracing as getting out of wheelchairs is a really big thing.

This staph is nasty bacteria which apparently is very difficult to wipe out with antibiotics. Lucky for me my disease doctor was also a professor who lectured on infectious diseases. It still took him 6 weeks and 3 different antibiotics on a drip and pick line to finally clear mine up. This was after the initial operation by the neurosurgeon. When an abscess forms in the cervical spine (neck) they cut your throat and go in and drain as much pus as they can from your vertebrae. They woke me up after this but my right leg was completely paralyzed so unfortunately I was rolled onto my stomach and he made a big incision down the back of my neck, stripped away all the spiny bone bits to expose my spinal cord as it wasn't pulsing. He then drained the rest of the abscess. I woke up in ICU intubated and I could just wiggle toes. I was so lucky late on a Sunday night a neurosurgeon was on call. Just a few more hours I most likely would have been wheelchair bound.
Interesting to know that 1 in 4 people have staph naturally occurring on their skin, so Sydney and I have it. It enters the bloodstream if you get a cut or bite. I am not sure how Sydney's immune system was so low, and I don't know for me either as I was fit and active as an agronomist.
Another thing I learned about staph bacteria is left unchecked it kills. I was told 1 in 3 people die as our local doctors don't pick it up on it until they finally order an MRI when paralysis sets in. Just 6 days after I had pain symptoms I had trouble weeing and in emergency they had to catheter and drained 1.5 litres !
Everyone these days are concerned about covid virus but the real danger is antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Thank you for sharing your story. We are sharing similar issues with being incomplete paraplegics. Mine was caused by a blood clot during or right after a spinal surgery and left me paralyzed from the hips down. I am at 2 1/2 years and I have heat, cold, touch and movement. Some strength, good strength in my left leg and some strength in my right leg. I am working on getting a new wheelchair that fits me. I’ve been using a transport chair from Walmart since the day I got out of the hospital so and I’m also trying to get more physical therapy I got new insurance as of this new year, my old insurance was just too difficult to get physical therapy so hopefully I’ll be up walking right behind you. stay strong

Just watched your video of three years ago, I had to listen. Being retired from orthotics, making braces, etc. It’s great to hear that you’ve got some return, I hope that continues. Are you taking vitamin D for keeping strong bones. And there’s other vitamins for spinal injury. Bracing can be good for circulation, and better for your internal system. You have a beautiful personality, I’ll be following your progress. Thanks for getting your story out there, I think you will help others.

My husband lost the use of his legs and in a wheelchair. After all the medical, we started physical therapy but I felt he needed more. I got him to a gym and a personal trainer. It took several months and baby steps. His muscles were gaining strength. He is now walking, not great, but he is walking with a brace on left leg. His left foot doesn’t work but race helps. This is just an idea for you.

I'm so impressed at how positive you are - you are intelligent and you are finding joy in your milestones - keep up pushing forward and grabbing life! I know what you mean by nerve pain - I have had 6 back surgeries and I have nerve pain so I know how much that hurts and numb areas on my legs but I can walk - I use a cane and the more I walk my legs get weaker but I deal with it - I also have fibromyalgia which when it flares up laying down on my bed hurts, the feel of my pajamas on my skin hurts, I walk around trying not to touch any where on my body until it eases up which I'm sure looks pretty funny 😄 - I'm a grandmother so I'm much older but I love your true joy 😁 😄😄😄❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Its so nice to see your update on the progress you are making, I only watched your video on how you became paralyzed a short time ago. I can relate too the thoughts you have been having regarding having to grow up and meeting people you may never of meet if it was not for the unfortunate event that led to your paralysation. So pleased you have gained strength in one leg. keep up the good work and at times I know it can be frustrating. I know with my experience the five years it took me had made me a far better person. Its fifty five years since i learnt to walk again but do not be surprised if you have the occasional fall or have to give your self longer in the mornings too gain balance. can I say if you use a leg brace you should still try to walk with out it on at times, Keeping the other leg moving will help to keep up some muscle and increase the chance of some feeling returning. One thing that often happens to me even now is I often bash my legs some times just ending in a bruising my leg but also cutting my leg and not even knowing about it until I fill stickiness on my foot, even now i have great difficulty moving backwards and it is impossible for me to go backwards down stairs. I do hope you will read my comment on the original post, good luck in passing your test, you have won my admiration on the way you have been able to cope (although i know you have no choice) but you video can help to inspire others so thank you,

I love how positive you are! it's very difficult to have a positive mindset in a situation like this. I tore my acl and had to have it surgically repaired, and while that went well, the nerve block completely shut down my quad muscles for about 3 weeks which pretty much didn't let me move that leg at all. so I get what you mean by how it feels to try to move your leg but nothing happens. it is the most surreal and frustrating feeling, like you know what to do but your body forgot how. I was nowhere near as positive as you are about it, and mine was only temporary. I've definitely been humbled. I wish the best for you and I'm glad I found your channel, you're a very entertaining person with a fun personality!

The story of your paralysis popped up in my recommended today, and admittedly I don't know why, but excellent story ma'am. Glad you are seeing some improvements and are exceedingly happy. Maybe not wholly satisfied, but few are wholly satisfied no matter their condition. Your comments about your acceptance and relative satisfaction with your circumstances, and your story about the other paralyzed gentleman you met, reminded me of the story of a blind lady: Fanny Crosby. She went blind when she was extremely young, might have been born blind, I don't remember right off, but was quite satisfied with her circumstances and, like you, found the best in it. Once she was told it was a great pity she was blind. She responded that she was happy blind and that she wouldn't want it any other way. The other person, rather taken aback, asked why. Her response was that the first thing she wanted to see with her eyes was the face of her, our, Savior. She continues on that topic in her song "My Savior First of All."

Your attitude is simply AMAZING! I realize that every situation and body is different, so this might be like an apples and oranges comparison, but I'm hopeful that my story of recovery might encourage others who have been recently paralyzed.
About 40 years ago (I was 25 then) I had badly ruptured my L4-L5 & L5-S1 discs from a combination of too many awkward and hard falls during gymnastics and figure skating. I had surgery to repair these ruptured discs. When I woke up I discovered that I had total paralysis from my waist down, apparently from the trauma of the surgery. I could move nothing - not even my toes.
Again, every body is different, and I realize I'm extremely fortunate in my progress, and I understand that you've also had some restoration of function with your right leg, which is great! For me, it was about 24-hours after the surgery when I found that I could move one of my toes on my right foot. In another day I could move all of the toes on my right foot, as well as my right leg, but it wasn't full-strength yet. I also saw a bit of progress in moving the toes on my left foot.
I was in the hospital using a walker for the following two weeks as I regained some function of my left leg, and my right leg strengthened. When I finally went home, I still had about 75% paralysis of my left calf, but I was able to walk - albeit, with a substantial limp.
Despite this calf paralysis, I returned to gymnastics in about 2-months, and was able to get my back-handsprings back...with a significant modification since I had virtually zero push from my left foot. 9-years later I had another disc surgery which restored a notable amount of function into my left calf - I'd say maybe 25% more function.
And this is where I am today - with about 50% paralysis of my left calf, but I can get by with that pretty well.
You've seen improvement of function of your own right leg, so I just wanted to mention my experience to illustrate that SOMETIMES after a paralysis some amount of function can eventually be restored.
I wish you great success in your own personal journey!

Just like you stated, I am here from the video you did telling how you got paralyzed. It was in my recommended for several weeks. I am a grandma. With a special needs grandson that I am helping raise. His mother was left in a vegetative state from a car accident. I saw your sweet young face in the thumbnail, and just could not bring myself to watch. But, today, I did. I am so happy that I did. Your attitude is so perfect! I am blessed to have watched!
I want to share something. With the knowledge, that, I do not have any medical training. I am just someone with lots of exposure to medical things, because of my life. Including spinal issues and chronic pain of my own. But this really comes from a book I read, about Christopher Reeves. He had a therapist, who had a theory, and was trying it out with him. Now he had a spinal injury. So different than you. But the nerves work the same way for everyone. This is what they did. They started with his little finger. He wlooked at his little finger, and thee therapist moved it. Like bent it, then straightened it. In his mind, he would think, to move his finger in that movement. He did this several times a day. With the idea, that the body, would repair the connection. The body is an amazing thing with amazing healing ability. The amazing thing was, he was beginning to be able to move that little finger a little bit. But, unfortunately, he passed away. I think there may be something to this. Just from my own experience with spinal issues, and other injuries. Specific one, a severed. Nerve in my forearm, from a dog bite. I felt it snap! My thumb on my left hand, was completely numb. I could move it though! Well, after reading that book, I began to do basically the same thing with my thumb. Today, I only have a spot, about the size of a quarter, on the top of my hand, that is numb. But I have full use of my thumb again. And feeling back in it. Granted, you have legs to recover! But, you are young. You mention in the video, that it’s hard for you to “remember” how to move. Maybe, do this with your mom. Several times a day if possible. You can even do it on your own. Every time you move your leg, touch your leg, anything, in your brain, THINK about making your leg move, the way you are moving it with your hand. The leg/foot, still has the nerves in it. The nerve, down the spine, to the spot, of infection, is still there. It just needs to find a way to connect, and replug, into each other. It can’t hurt! It has validity, when you think scientifically. The brain, will actually repair itself, and put old functions, in a different part of the brain, if it is injured! My daughter in law has begun to speak, after eight years! She is coming back! From a traumatic brain injury that left her in a vegetative state. That is a severe example. After three years, I regained full use of my thumb, and regained most the feeling in my thumb/hand. Which is a minor example. You fall somewhere in between the two. I think the key is, repetitions! I believe the body tries to repair broken nerve connections. But if the mind, and the body part, don’t send out the signals together, at the same time, then the two ends just miss each other. Not being able to meet up in the middle, and reconnect. I hope this is making sense. Watch some videos about how signals are sent, from the brain to a muscle, and from a muscle, or skin, to the brain. Having an understanding will help with this. I think Christopher Reeves therapist was onto something. I believe he was actually correct. And on top of this, you have muscle atrophy. So, you can make a connection with the nerves, but if the muscle is not strong enough to accomplish the move, it may seem like, there is no connection. But, if the nerves reconnect, and you continue to try, and work those muscles, eventually the muscle comes back. I have a few different problems in my spine. I have two vertebrae in my neck, that grew together, on their own. It caused me many issues with my right arm. It has been ten years since the worse point. And the muscles have rebuilt. The pain has lessened. And the strength is slowly returning. I believe it can be done. It might take you ten years to return the use of your left leg. But the ten years are going to go by anyway. You will be moving your leg and foot anyway. It doesn’t take anymore time to just THINK THE THOUGHT. Like if you are putting on a sock, imagine in your mind, the sock is on my toes, up on my arch, over my heel, on my ankle. THINK what your brain would have received, if you were not paralyzed. Look down at your foot. It is spitting on the foot rest. Lift your leg up. THINK, my heel is off thee foot rest. Think “put my foot back down” THINK THE MOVEMENT, as you lower your heel back to the foot rest. When you pick you leg up, to move it, like in bed, THINK THE MOVEMEENT, as you manually move your leg. Touch your thigh, and THINK about the feeling of your hand touching your thigh. The signal, of all these things, are coming from your leg, traveling up the nerve, and when it reaches your spine, the path is broken. So the signal never makes it to your brain. And from what you stated in the video, there has already been some confusion, in your brain, to certain nerves. You stated you can’t remember how to make certain movements. That is alright! When you do this exercise, just always think it, the same way. Your body will know what to do. It will become easier over time! It starts out, very confusing. Just focus, and eventually, it becomes second nature. And the improvements are so slow, that one day, you realize, there has been a lot of improvement, you just didn’t realize it, because it was so small. That is what happened with my thumb. I realized one day, that the full range motion of my thumb, was back! And I realize, it had slowly been returning. Just such a small improvement, that it could not be registered or noticed, until the improvement was significant enough, to be noticed. Hope that makes sense. And I am not saying you will get completely full use back. Im not saying you will be able to be a ballerina or something. But I believe you could get back enough, to walk again! I fully and truly and completely believe this. Cause you already have the main, most important. Part!!!!! A GREAT ATTITUDE!!!!
Well, that’s just this old KY grandmas thoughts on the matter. You are such a precious soul! I wish you many happy years! Wherever it is, that your journey takes you. Much love

I feel sad because you are so young but your positivity changes my perception. Yeah it was a sad thing that happened and it frustrated me hearing how doctors just sent you home after your Er visits. Im a nurse and It just pushes me to take what patients say more seriously. I know the strange feeling of not having a clear answer to "do you wish it hadn't happened". I've been through mentally difficult things in life, and in a way you could say yeah obviously you don't volunteeringly want such struggles and you'd be better off without them, however because of it I am now the person I am. I matured and changed my perspective and views on things because of what happened, so for that reason I wouldn't change it.
I'd also like to point out that there are a lot of people who are perfectly healthy (physically at least) and still are not enjoying life. The fact that you can say your life is amazing and you're excited for your future is an incredible thing to have, and just because you're paralyzed doesn't take anything away from that. Treasure it. I'm so happy for you.
