Sydney my twin brother compressed his spine at L1-T12 when we were 16. He's been a paraplegic ever since. We are 52 now and he's never learned how to really deal with it and it's really turned him into the meanest person I've ever met.
Please keep your beautiful spirit and stay happy.

Sorry to read about your brother. It is very understandable. We all like to think we could handle adversity like Sydney, and maybe unfairly think that a great influence like Sydney and her story should make it easier for others. But everyone is different and even Sydney has challenges to come. Everyone who goes through something like that should feel like the whole world is going through it with them, but it is really too hard and suffering is lonely. I hope for the best for you and your brother.

@@CheatOnlyDeath thank you. Oh yeah. Life has a very tricky way of sneaking up on you. Even myself, I used to say i didn't believe in depression but one day i realized i stopped getting out of bed. I haven't showered for over a year and I've been that guy that takes a cold shower over no shower. It's anazing the power the human brain has. I'm still trying to get back all the motivation i used to have. I hope all is well with you.

Sorry to hear, sometimes meanness comes from the world's unkind reaction to his predicament.

Willa Herrera I hear you. As I'm commenting I've been giving myself a pep talk over the last few hours on why I should get up and leave my room. Its almost been a month since venturing out. Very hard o explain to ppl.I'm a 60 year old female. I wish you the best buddy !

@@p.e.p2368 I had to watch my best friends (3 amazing loving beautiful corgi babies i devoted my life to) struggle with a demon disease i held them all while they left. It broke me. I honestly haven't taken a shower in over a year i worked in the dental field my entire life. In that year my teeth have all rotted and i don't care. Im currently lying in bed but I'm getting up today. I honestly didn't believe depression was a real thing but i've come to learn it's a sneaky sob. I've always been a strong confident guy that doesn't hesitate to help anyone with zero thought of myself. Please do get up and fight for your life. This world still needs you. Im going to force myself to go outside and change the oil in my truck and I'm hoping i get filthy so i can trick my mind into getting into the shower. I used to be the kind if guy that NEVER missed a shower. If the power was out i would take a cold shower. Depression is sneaky but don't let it take you down.

I was much older, in my mid 30's, when I had my 1st fusion surgery. The 1st one was an anterior/posterior fusion from L4 to T2. I have had 4 since. Not gonna lie...those years were bad. The younger you are, the better the results. Also, I had an allergy to the surgical steel. Surgery 3 was to remove the metal. Surgery 4 was to take the fusion up higher and down to L5. Titanium was used. Unfortunately, one of the rods broke and was 1 mm away from my spinal cord, so that metal was also removed. I would do anything to go back to before the 1st Surgery and not have it. That was over 30 years ago, so I am sure that the technique and the Dr's that do this Surgery have gotten better at it. Now, my curve looks like a broken down upside down ¿. Though mine is in the other direction. All my surgeries failed and none of my fusions took. When the metal had to come out, everything collapsed from gravity. I still walk, but I have tethering of my cord. The hypersensitivity in my left leg is bad, yet the back of my left leg is numb. I have pain and spasms. Nothing is easy. Take care of what you have left and see at least 3 good spine surgeon's from 3 different medical centers before you go through this. My biggest mistake was to trust a surgeon at my local hospital that told me he could reduce my pain by 90%. 😵‍💫 Unrealistic goals never work out. Prayers and best wishes for your future.

Sydney I am so impressed with how you handle such difficult health situations. You are mature beyond your years. What a scary prospect to have a complete fusion surgery. I had just three disc fused and trust me it was painful and difficult to get used to. Mine was C-5 C-6 and C-6 C-7 fun times. it was two separate surgeries and I am going to have to go through more coming up soon. I want you to do what is best for you, this is your life, you have to choose what and how you want to live it. I wish you health and happiness. I love you too sweet girl.

Omg so I have a sort of similiar situation and I hope this comment helps you. I have muscular dystrophy, also combined with scoliosis. My scoliosis was also caused by weaker muscles on one side of my body. I was able to find an amazing scoliosis clinic close to where I live(Toronto Canada), that literally trains you on different exercises and therapy practices in order to strengthen and straighten your curve. Even with muscular dystrophy, I was able to stop progression and strengthen my back. I would highly highly recommend putting in the work and avoiding surgery for as long as you can! Goodluck with everything and thanks for sharing your journey❤️ i

I just watched your video about how you became paralysed before this, and I was so fascinated (and horrified by it!) and wanted to see how you were doing now. My mum has scoliosis and had experimental surgeries when she was a child (she's in her 60s now, back then there was much less they could do, but they are always making progress) but she was told there were so many things she couldn't do and she just did them all anyway! and she's always been an inspiration to me, and I can tell you you are going to be an inspiration to so many people as well. You will still be able to adapt and do a lot of things that you love and this can def include the water skiing ⛷️🌊🤞 You have such a beautiful spirit and outlook, it's great to see you still smiling despite everything life has kept throwing at you, sending love and healing wishes your way ❤️

Have you ever tried a back brace? I have scoliosis but I have a back brace at night, and my curve went 30 percent or something to 18 percent from just the back brace. but then again after my first back brace, my curve went the other direction! But the back brace literally helped me so much, and for some not that active, for you who is very active, the brace could be life changing!

Unfortunately, the type of scoliosis I have (neuromuscular) is caused by an injury where idiopathic which is the most common type of scoliosis can be braced but the reason for my scoliosis is the weakness of muscles from the paralysis and a brace will not help. According to my doctor.

Happy birthday Sydney. I'm sorry to hear about the scoliosis though. When you mentioned the digestive/stomach problems you're having too I started wondering whether they could actually be related. The human gut is very asymmetrical and it has its own nervous system which can actually function independently of the CNS, but is connected to the CNS in various ways, not just via nerves, but via the circulatory system and involving hormones and the endocrine system. There seem to be a lot of yoga practitioners that say that gentle yoga exercises can help to restore muscular symmetry and as yoga involves breathing exercises, that may help with the digestive problems too. Thanks for reminding me again that I don't really have any problems myself. Your kind of positivity in infectious! ❤️

He went from a straight spine to a 70% curvature in one year. The surgery took 6 hours and went great.

hey sydney! on june 11 of this year, i would have had my spinal fusion surgery 4 years ago to correct severe scoliosis. i got almost a total fusion, with 15 of my vertebrae fused from about T2-L4, and i had a 65 and 35 degree curves. i was in the hospital for about 3 days, and on painkillers for the next couple months. recovery for me wasn't easy, since i took a significant fall about a week post op and nearly paralyzed myself, and i had an allergic reaction to the gabapentin they gave me, however i am feeling so much better now! my posture is amazing, i'm 3 inches taller, and i will never have to worry about my back crushing my lungs in my 40s. it took 3 months for me to get back into sports, and about a year to recover fully. i still have some bad back days, and airplane seats are wicked uncomfortable, but if given the chance again to either do the surgery or let it continue, i would pick surgery every time. my back pain isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, and i'm so grateful i did it. my back also has not resisted against the rods, and it will stay stick straight for the rest of my life, of course that is if i don't break my rods. as scary as it sounds, it is honestly not that bad if you have a good team of nurses and the morphine button. be sure to get lots of rest and eat a lot of food!
if you have any questions about the surgery or anything at all, please don't hesitate to ask. i was so scared for my surgery, and if i can alleviate any fear for anybody else who gets this surgery after me, i would love to do it.

    Hi Sydney
I feel a little awkward putting any comment at all because I'm 59yrs old. I thought this channel was going to be about make-up and girly stuff. I'm a fan of the probable cause with Dan. He's the one who told me to check out your channel. When I was able to see you waterski, I couldn't be more impressed with your abilities. I do have a question for you. Just curious if you believe in God. I don't and won't judge you no matter what your answer is. I do believe in miracles. Take care of yourself, bye for now

So I also had scoliosis caused by unequal muscles after an injury to my lumbar spine that impact the nerves. I start going multiple times a week to a special physio that put like a stimulator device on the muscles to get them to fire. Mine never got to the degree of yours (or anywhere close) and I started the therapy as soon as they noticed it happening BUT it did stop the progression and helped. I also eventually did regain muscle function after a few years so haven't had any further issues - but I hope they can figure something out to continue to allow you to water ski! Proud of you for having a positive outlook on this! You got it girl!

This is not medical advice. Instead I have a few medical questions for you. 1) I believe there are electrical stimulation devices called TENS machines that can stimulate muscle externally or be used to block pain signals by distracting the nervous system. Has your doctor discussed using these with you to stimulate lower back muscles on the weak side? 2) Has your doctor mentioned taking Creatine Monohydrate to maximise muscle retention and minimise muscle fatigue? It's available in supermarkets these days and is often used across a wide age band including elderly people to prevent falls in old age and the cognitive benefits are amazing too (produced naturally by the body and relates to ATP energy production, it won't turn you into the hulk but it helps infuse muscles with energy and can reduce pain associated with muscle loss/atrophy). 3) After your spinal injury, what supplements did your doctor recommend? Are you taking R+ALA (alpha lipoic acid) and Benfotiamine for nerve repair? Are you taking a multi-vitamin incorporating a B vitamin complex on a daily basis? 4) Do you take electrolytes such as magnesium citrate and potassium gluconate to give your nervous system + metabolic system energy? The potassium has so many benefits and it's incredibly hard to get the recommended minimum from diet alone. If you have problems with insomnia/ chronic low energy/ leg cramps or leg swelling due to fluid retention/buildup you may want to discuss with your doctor if supplemental potassium would help. I always start and end my day with a teaspoon of potassium gluconate in my tea and the blood pressure lowering effect alone is just wonderful. 5) Has your doctor mentioned taking MSM and glucosamine for your joints and spine? I vaguely remember seeing something about glucosamine rehydrating spinal discs when taken with MSM for people suffering herniated discs / slipped discs etc. Always discuss treatment options with your doctor first but also be proactive in seeking answers. There are a lot of supplements out there and a lot of people looking to treat nerve damage from diabetic peripheral neuropathy. I would not be surprised if there is significant overlap in terms of treatment options for what you might benefit from. Your positive outlook is wonderful. I hope you manage to try kite boarding one day. 👍

I may be totally off here, but as a teenager, I had scoliosis pretty bad. No paralysis like you or anything, but I went to a chiropractor for 3 years and now you can barely tell I have scoliosis. I mean it’s worth trying maybe? IDK. Just sometimes alternative stuff work for some me people. You could check it out. You’re a beautiful person inside & out. I wish you nothing but great things in the future. You will be in my prayers. 🙏❤️

Girl I have severe scoliosis as well and it was super fast progressing. I was diagnosed in 8th grade and was fitted for a brace in 9th grade to try and stop the curvature from getting worse however I didn’t wear it nearly as much as I should because it was so uncomfortable. At that time it was roughly 25°. Then I ended up having a baby when I was 19 years old and then a second baby when I was 22 and a third baby when I was 23. After those 3 pregnancies my curvature was 53° so I had my first surgery when I was 24 years old in 2018 and it was corrected to roughly 20° and I am SO thankful for my husband who not only looked after me but our 3 kids too and he’s such a good dad. Now Fast forward to 2022 I had to have a second surgery because my spine was bending the rods again just from being so active and chasing my kids around trying to be the best mom I could be, I had also had my 4th baby in 2021 so that definitely did not help my case. My surgeon put as little hardware as possible the first time but it was just not enough to hold everything in place so he took it all out and put it back in except 2 vertebrae longer the 2nd time. Now a few months away from my 2 year anniversary from the 2nd surgery I’m now looking at facing yet another surgery because my rods are bending again and no amount of pain killer in this world makes it any better. I wouldn’t wish this pain on my worst enemy, the pain I’m feeling now and the pain after my first surgery. Post op pain was unlike anything I’ve ever felt and at this point I’ve already had 3 babies and 2 of those babies were unmedicated… labour and delivery felt like a paper cut in comparison to the first night after surgery. I was begging the nurses to put me in a coma or just kill me because I couldn’t stand the pain for another second however the nurses were so shocked why they didn’t give me a spinal nerve block after surgery because this is usually standard practice, so if you’re still waiting to get this surgery ASK FOR A NERVE BLOCK AND YOU SHOULD BE OKAY! I know you mentioned that the surgery is like being paralyzed in a sense and it’s true because I had to learn how to walk and even just stand again. I had my granny walker so I could sit down and wheel myself around whenever walking became too much for me which was often. It’s just crazy when you’re out of surgery you don’t realize how much you use your back muscles until you can’t use them, my husband was spoon feeding me in the hospital because lifting my arms to bring the fork to my mouth was nearly impossible. I couldn’t imagine going through this in your position when you need your back and your arms to do pretty much everything. I don’t know where you’re at right now in this process but I just wanted to tell you that you’re a freakin badass warrior and don’t ever forget it! I’m sending all the quick healing and muscle strengthening dust your way! And if you have any questions at all feel free to contact me! ❤

Hi. I have 2 hemi vertebrae with congenital scoliosis. It's only mildly kept me down at times, but at 56 it has gotten worse. The top of my s curve has worsened to 49 degrees and my lower curve is 36. I can't reverse mine because it's due to bone deformities and age. They want me to think about fusion surgery from about l2 to s1, and I am scared. I have plans and dreams too even at 56. I can't do much right now. I really hope you the best outcome. It's such a bummer and we have no control of it.

I’m sorry your so young dealing with this prayers . Spine fusion surgery is a really serious surgery. I had it done last August from dropfoot which it was fixed or I would’ve been paralyzed on my right leg and foot. It’s a long procedure it’ll be dangerous. I have four screws a cage they fused it and I have cement. I was in hospital 10 days . And it’s been almost 9 months and I’m just now being able to do some light running. I had it on my L5 S1. Praying all goes well I have been following your story . I’m a mom . 🙏🙏hope all goes well hang in there .I also have scoliosis if my neck . Stay strong ❤️❤️🙏🙏

I have ben living with gastroparesis for about 6 to 7 years now. It sucks!!!!!!!! When it flares I will throw up every few minutes for hours and sometimes days. I denied having a feeing J tube put in. I did have a gastric pacemaker placed that helps my stomach empty but more than anything it also stop most of the nausea signals to the brain. So even when sick and bloated I do not notice it as bad. I am not paralyzed but I do have neurological disorders. You are tough and your attitude is Amazing. If you do have or get GP their is hope.

My husband has scoleosis from years of pro wrestling and pro dancing. His was a mid 40 degree. He found a specialist in Orlando Fl that is not covered by our insurance but it's a therapy place that he had to go to every day so we stayed there. They were the best. He did a lot of research. His other dr's told him he needed surgery, but he hasn't yet and with lots of work it is helping him. We have a lot of weird equipment in our house for him to continue therapy every day on his own. They had many young adults there and in wheelchairs. They are used to working with all ages, and different degrees. If he can do it, I know you can. You are way tougher than my husband. lol

Hey, so I got a spinal fusion for my scoliosis in 2017 when I was 13, it was from the top to bottom I had a 60 degree curve and dreaded the surgery, I was so scared because I have a neuromuscular disease (muscular dystrophy) and top of being told all the scary things ur being told about the surgery I was told I had a 40% chance of dying in the operating room because my heart and lungs weren’t strong enough for that big of a surgery, but If I didn’t have the surgery it was going to get worse everyday so much that it would affect my breathing and I wouldn’t make it past 20. It was one of if not the hardest decision of my life and I was so scared of not only the recovery and pain but that I was going to die. But I gave it all to God and tried my best to have faith that even when I didn’t see it he was working for my well-being, and I just want to tell you that as hard as it was, having that surgery was one of the best decisions of my life. I wish I had someone tell me this when I was going through the thoughts that I know your having and the what ifs, but Gods got you, and trust me, the pain is not as bad as they make it sound, recovery is tough, but life’s tough and you will make it through it’s nothing more than what you and I had already been through. I had to learn that faith is being able to move on a maybe, because it might not work but God is always working. Give it all to him, if he did It for me, he can do it for you. You got this girl
