As a 73 year old polio survivor who had to learn to walk three times, I can tell you have the right attitude. I’ll pray for your best outcome but, I know you will make the best of whatever that might be. Don’t be too hard on those people who keep asking the same question, they just don’t realize how many times you’re asked. Have a Very Merry Christmas, Love Ron

Hi, Makayla Oct 2021 was my 40th year of living as a C5-6 quadriplegic. You have started on a new journey with many twists and turns; keep a positive attitude! Much will change; you will continue to grow more independent. You will look back in five years; much of what you are doing now will look much different. You probably will no longer need compression socks or a belly band to maintain your blood pressure. You will not need as much assistance from others. I encourage you to pursue learning to drive one of the best things I have ever done. Just a little about me I am married, have two children, I work, and drive by myself most times. I wish you the very best. David

@@karyndewit193 It’s not unusual. If a person’s spinal cord is severed, there is no chance of recovering function. However, if the spinal cord is injured in a less serious way, it can swell or just be damaged. People who have this type of injury have a good chance of recovery. In the video, she describes how she regained partial use of her hands. It’s the same basic idea with legs.

I’m so happy to hear that! Do you remember a contestant on Dancing with the Stars who had been a quadriplegic? Like your mom, it took YEARS of work to recover, and doctors told her “if you have not recovered function by now, you won’t.” She refuses to believe them and continued an unbelievable PT regimen for a long time (I want to say 2 years) after they told her it was hopeless. One day she felt a muscle twitch in her leg. Fast forward to winning medals for swimming in the Paralympics, then total recovery. Now, you would never know it happened by looking at her. I am on a similar journey myself, and was very driven and hopeful in hospital, also then during 2 in patient rehabs and months at home with all the support. Then COVID hit. Everything (!) has been an uphill battle ever since, and I think it popped my denial bubble much sooner than it might have before. The natural denial is a good thing in a way, lots of momentum you need to get out of the foxhole. But the often slow, creeping nature of any spinal recovery gives one plenty of time for the 5 stages of grief. My 12 year old daughter has been in competition cheerleading for 5 years now. People don’t realize that it’s a very extreme sport. Sadly, most states don’t recognize it as a sport either. In 2020, right before we went into Covid lockdown, she landed a stunt wrong during practice (she’s a flyer) and broke her C2 vertebrae! I can’t even tell you the fear and panic a mother goes through when your child is injured in such a way. I was so scared she would end up paralyzed. Count my blessings everyday that wasn’t the end result.
They call it a “hangman’s fracture” on the two places she broke her neck. So thankful for the team at Mass General in Boston. They have some of the best specialists in the field.
My daughter is finally fully healed now, but it was a long road filled of appointments, pain, neck braces, etc. The only good thing was that it happened right as we were stuck inside for the full year in lockdown. So she got to heal. She wants to go back to cheer, as she’s been dedicated for 5 years now, but that one time was enough of a scare for me that I can’t allow it. I have no doubt that you will be back fully walking again as well! 💗

I suffered a penetrating brain injury.. My parents were told it was very unlikely I would survive the 1st 24 hours then they were told if I did survive I would have severe cognitive issues then they were told I would never walk or feed myself or be independent in any way again...I walk (with a limp & cane), have zero cognitive problems & am 100% independent.. I am not going to lie & tell you it's easy my left arm left leg from the knee down are paralyzed..I have a lot of pain and a couple other health problems..its been 6 years I'm still in physical & occupational therapy & go to all of my different doctors multiple times a month but I'm alive, happy & my favorite thing to do is prove the people wrong who tell me I cant do something! I would disagree with comments saying you are inspiring because you are strong and brave. Because I think the most inspiring thing about you is your positivity. Not a lot of people can relate to your story because its yours and everyone's different, so even if it makes me think i can be more self-confident in my insecurities seeing how you are still happy in that difficult time, I think the best part of you is how (even if you may have very hard and sad days) you share how staying positive, smiling is always the first step in every cure to get better, physically or mentally. I was recently in an accident and needed a total hip replacement quite young (32). I struggled with this for quite a while as the surgery was done abroad (accident happened in Africa). When I got home the surgeon here said that he would not have given me a total hip replacement and would have tried screws first. I went through a lot emotional turmoil with this and obsessive thoughts due to my OCD. I felt robbed of my hip and doomed to definite future surgeries. But your video popped up on my feed and it has really helped to give me perspective and encourage acceptance of my current situation. Although my issue was traumatic for me, I need to put it into perspective. At least I'm alive and breathing, like you. Your attitude is so inspirational, I am going to take a leaf out of your book. Thank you for spreading your positivity, it's infectious and has helped countless people to see the positive in their own situations, just like you have. xx

On May 27, 1995, he was in an equestrian accident where he fell off his horse and broke his neck leaving him paralyzed from the neck down and in a wheelchair for life until he passed away on October 10, 2004. A few years ago I was hit by CFS/ME which has left me almost completely bedbound and housebound. Prior to getting sick I was a marathon runner, enjoying a successful career in teaching, a job I loved, and was a very outgoing and sociable person who was rarely at home. You are obviously dealing with far, far more severe issues than I am, but a lot of what you were talking about here really resonates with me. Taking things one day at a time, trying to focus on the positives rather than the negatives, trying to learn the lessons that a major life-changing event brings along with it. Having said all that, your strength and positive attitude at such a young age is truly remarkable and truly inspiring. It took me years to begin to accept the changes to my life now, which included going off the rails many times, whereas you seem to be at peace with things after only a few months. Your remarkable strength shines through the screen, and I'm glad you're surrounded by such an incredible family to help pick you up on the inevitable bad days. Your words in this video will have provided so much inspiration so many people around the world, including me over here in the UK, and I just want to thank you for sharing your story with us.

I don’t know your story yet but my son is almost 15 last weekend he was at a cheer competition (they won’t 1st grand champion) we drove home Monday when he woke up he could barely walk long story short he has a bilateral L5 Fractures he is devastated to loose cheer he doesn’t dig being in the hospital or waring a TLSO back brace not to mention Christmas right around the corner! We don’t know what the future holds as every time a doctor comes in things changes your videos are so encouraging to me as a parent!! Thank you for sharing your story!!!

I didn't see any arrogance. And even if she was arrogant, good for her for believing in herself and accomplishing more in an hour than either of you two louts ever will. Your attitudes suck. Examine yourselves before you criticize a young lady who has been through so much.
