Great musicianship - shows that this transcends the instrument. Classical sax is unknown and under rated. Thanks for acknowledging this with some great arrangements.
bruce whitcher People consider it unknown, yet every saxophonist in every concert band in every school in every nation across the globe is playing classical sax. They may not realize it, but they are. By numbers, it far surpasses any other style of playing. It’s a strange dichotomy.
This is not how the sax is "supposed to sound like." That instrument may sound like a brass instrument, or like a woodwind, or anything in between and its tone can be produced and coloured in many different ways. It is good for classical, band music, jazz, pop, rock, anything. That is why it is so popular.
Okay GUYS at 2:06 listen to how the tenor and the alto almost sound like two flutes... it takes a lot of skill to get their instruments to sound like that. Major props
Actually, it was Christopher Blossom's arrangement. For some reason it says Brian Sacawa in the description, but Christopher Blossom in the video annotation. I am playing this arrangement for my saxophone quartet (I'm a junior in high school) and to get the music I emailed Brian Sacawa who informed me that the arrangement was actually by Christopher Blossom.
@@michaelgallagher0724 Hi sorry I just saw this. It was a year and a half ago but you might be able to find it on the army band's website. If you can't find his email you can always contact the army band's librarian like I did. Also I have since graduated and am about to major in music ed so wish me luck :)
How does one buy or obtain a copy of this: String Quartet, Op. 18, No.1 / I. Allegro Con Brio by Ludwig van Beethoven, arranged by Sergeant First Class Brian Sacawa? Thank you!
The United States Army Field Band please play Czardas or prelude in c (cello suite no1 bach) or Turkish march (Ronda Alla turca - Mozart) they are my favorite classical songs 😊
Originally this piece is for 2 violins, viola and cello, which corresponds to soprano, alto and bari sax setup. That is academically correct. However, a single soprano sax cannot deliver voicing and the hamonics which in this piece is delivered by two violins, and neither of the altos here supports the soprano sufficiently. However, considering this is a possible interpretation, it is still very fine. But it could be improved upon by dropping one alto and adding a tenor sax, because the tenor may match some registers of the cello better than inert bari sax, and play enough of highs to take over some viola parts, plus add some huskiness to the sound that string quarters have, but woodwinds lack.
+Tiny Rick You can always check websites for people selling personal instruments at a reduced rate if you'd like to get one. You never know when you may come across a great deal!
+Long & Hard I got a like-new Yani S-991 soprano off of ebay for 1.5k! Be patient with your search and eventually you'll find a great deal! Also try going to SOTW forums. Lots of people are selling their saxes for decent prices.
At the time of this recording I was performing on a Selmer S80 C** mouthpiece customized by the late Bob Scott of Lansing, Michigan, and a Vandoren Traditional 3.5 reed. I have since moved to a Selmer Concept mouthpiece with the same reeds, although I occasionally use a Legere Signature 3.25 synthetic reed, particularly during this time of year when the onset of spring is wreaking havoc with my cane!
@@erginyilmaztenor The Concept pieces only come in one facing, the soprano is a close tip opening at 1.06mm and a facing length of 21mm. Mine is unaltered from the factory.
The score says fortissimo, but you don't play fortissimo. It feels like saxophone players that only play loud in a bigband, and they approach classical music with tweezers. I assume you've seen the string quartets play this; they play as loud as they can at parts!
I am particularly enamored by the soprano sax (like everybody else by the looks of it :) ). It sounds like a mix between a clarinet and an oboe.
@Nicholas Graves Why so mad

bruce whitcher It's funny because the saxophone was invented for the concert/orchestral setting and now it's used for mainly jazz.

Such beautiful, elegant playing! Bravo! Wonderful arrangement, too.
Please make an album?
This is excellent - these are seriously talented musicians
i completely agree

Will Morris how did you get his email address? I was thinking about starting a sax quartet at my school, and I would love to play this piece!

I wish I could those amazing sounds on my Bari sax
0:44 man, that is some fantastic bari control.
I played this in Orchestra in school on violin. I wish I had the music to play this on my tenor sax!
At 6:49 the looks shows his confidence. I want be that confident enough like him.
The soprano at 3:22 is amazing! great job
Indeed superb!
Great saxophone quartet. Everyone sounds great
Thanks so much!
This is awesome!
I feel like I was just touched by God.
Superb. Bravo.
Very beautiful
Amazing
Alright that was pretty good, but now do the B flat scale in half notes! xD

I always thought saxophones are only in Jazz Bands lmao, this is awesome
The saxophone was invented with the orchestra/concert band in mind.
I eargasmed.
I say that all the time when I hear them!! Or anything else great

The ensemble in the video has a tenor saxophone. It’s a saxophone quartet (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bari)
I want to learn soprano sax so bad but I'm too poor to buy one ;(

Sir Soda Poppin' Quickie it's actually a clarinet in disguise lol
is there anyway you can add the sheet in the video plz

By the way, thank you for taking the repeat in the first movement! I haven't seen any string quartets that take the repeat :'(
