That is marvelous! I've always associated a saxophone with a sort of brassy, sharp-edged sound. I've never heard them sound so mellow and creamy -- almost like a combination of clarinet and french horn. Wonderful! (And I bet the guys got it in the first take, too!)
[OTD]Sir_Nicholas1259 there are 4 saxophonists in my band 2 altos 1 tenor and 1 bari so if I could find this arrangement it would be fun to learn albeit it has a soprano sax but I could learn.
I can speak from experience of playing soprano that it doesn't require a lot of breath, making it easier to play longer, but the phrasing in the piece does leave room for breath
That's funny, there is no breathing mwahahahahahahahaha I believe the soprano has 1 or 2 breaks in this so he probably hides some breaths very well and mixes in some circular breathing
Our #saxophone section performed today at Greenwood Elementary School in Toledo, one of the first Purple Heart schools in the nation in recognition of their efforts for #veterans. Watch one of the pieces they performed! #musiced #educationaloutreach #purpleheart #honorourveterans #toledo #ohio
This is a delightful rendition of this piece. Can always rely on an Army musician to do things precise and crisp. So glad Bach's music is still appreciated by younger generations. Thinking how Johann created this for one person to play on one instrument is insane.
Incredible how the Soprano sounds like a flute sometimes. If anyone has doubts as to why Saxophones should be classified as woodwind I'll refer them to this video.
We had a small ensemble play this at my high school, a quintet. It was 1 bari sax, 1 tenor sax, 2 alto saxes, and 1 clarinet. They sounded absolutely amazing! They practiced before going to competition for several months, and all the work they put in seriously showed. Good job army band, it sounded awesome!
I'm a jazz major in high school and I don't really like playing or listening to classical music. But this song is really cool and you guys played it so well. Excellent job gentlemen.
cool, my sax quartet is playing this at school. im on alto for this piece. sadly, we dont have a soprano sax :( its just our best alto saxophonist playing in the altissimo range the entire time.
***** although they are in the same key, it would give improper voicing to the music and it wouldn't sound right. It's satb format, meaning we literally need soprano alto tenor and bass/Bari. Since we don't have a soprano at school, we use an alto in its higher register.
+Shalya Madra no, because the tenor sax is 2 octaves below the soprano. even then, the tenor voice is important, and if we have tenor play soprano, we lose that middle voice. it's easier to have 2 altos and have the first alto play a bit up in the altissimo range than have such a lower sax play the soprano part. thats like asking a tenor vocalist to sing the soprano part, it just can't easily be done
Such a beautiful song, and amazingly finished by our Army Field Band. I love it. Ill be using this Fugue as an auditioning piece. That's how much this has stuck with me and how amazing it sounds. I'm playing Tenor and pre-recording the other 3 pieces. I've gotten the Tenor part down well except for the trills, those are very tricky with G# and D# trills to me.
Joshua Sobel I think he was circular breathing to better match the phrasing of the organ where obviously organ players don't have to pause to breathe but wind players do.
Such a joy to hear this.. Voices of Bach's fugues are supposed to sound very independently, which is sometimes difficult to manage within just two hands. But each voice played by one bloke makes them definitely independent enough!
Beautiful...I didn't know a sax could sound so nice... After 10 years on an alto clarinet I've condescended to the sax, but now it's not a condescension.
Kaisle song requires singing! There's no singing here. You can have f.e a symphony, chorale, cantata, rhapsody, valse, marche, fugue, song, etc, they are all different types of music.
This brings me so much happiness. The sound was beautiful. Watching made me so proud to be a fellow sax player. I thought I was good though... HA! But my sax brother would be awesome for this band.
This is honestly amazing, any group or person I've seen plays this nails it every time. It's cool to hear this and compare it to Carolina Crowns version.
My new favorite song! Love it so much. I play alto saxophone and it's the best thing that ever happened to me. Songs like this make me cry. You guys have made my day. Thank you!

Army guys work well as a team, always having each other's Bach.
Underrated comment! :)
😂
Lmfao
This is the joke police, you are under arrest
Executed with military precision. Beautiful.
haha
The Bari Sax sounds amazing...
@Earwig Hrothgarsen Bach was indeed a bass!
Agree. Mellow and on point!
A baritone
sax is the lowest
Nah, there are Bass saxes, Contrabass saxes, and for truly earth moving bass, check out the Tubax...
@@sha1om bass , contrabass , subcontrabass
This is literally perfect
There's not a lot videos of this song performed by any instruments besides the organ on TH-cam
+Cameron Whitten Thanks!
Ever hear it on “Walter Carlos by Request” he plays it on the moog and it’s the best
*Coughs in overly DCI fan way* uh Carolina did the opener of this song and it's really gud.
Carolina crown has a rendition of this that sounds really good
It is SO GOOD to see a military band keep this music alive: classical music is good for the mind and the soul! ...and exquisitely done!
That is marvelous! I've always associated a saxophone with a sort of brassy, sharp-edged sound. I've never heard them sound so mellow and creamy -- almost like a combination of clarinet and french horn. Wonderful! (And I bet the guys got it in the first take, too!)
Janis Cortese Thanks so much for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed.
Check out Paul Desmond. Very smooth sax player
@@joshknightfall His solo in Autumn Leaves is one of my favourites
That's because saxophones aren't brass, they're woodwind instruments, despite the obvious brass-like appearance
@Drillkicker Closer in sound to a cello imo
As a Bari Sax player, your guys got a keeper there. Absolutely a stunning performance!
[OTD]Sir_Nicholas1259 there are 4 saxophonists in my band 2 altos 1 tenor and 1 bari so if I could find this arrangement it would be fun to learn albeit it has a soprano sax but I could learn.
WHEN DOES THE FIRST GUY BREATH
+Rank Savage He probably hides it

He doesn't. Breathing is for sailors. :-)
I am not overly fond of the Saxophone. But this is so well played that I listened to it again, twice.
I have to have this memorized on organ by next month, pray that I am able to make it!
Did you manage it?
No, I didn't. :-( But I managed to play just before Christmas. :-)
Good job anyway.
+Earl Archibald Campbell of Argyll Are you willing to post your rendition on TH-cam?
Earl Archibald Campbell of Argyll did you get it played??

good job guys
you nailed it
Good job guy
Nice
did the Bari player use circular breathing? I noticed he'd puff his cheeks out at points and became curious
+Brandon Allison He did

the reed kinda automatically classifies it as a woodwind tho
@@goodsprings5271 Flutes don't use reeds, and it's still classified as a woodwind, I think it's kinda just based on what you use to play
@@That.Feeling it’s based on the fact that flutes used to be wood

I absolutely adore this! smashing performance the first players tone and fluidity was gorgeous not to mention his gorgeous trills

I have never heard saxophones sound this... dark and mellow and round...
it is a good day today
Little Fugue = Best Fugue
I watch this everyday 😅

Are you still watching it to this day ?

tenor is only 1 octave below soprano, not 2. was that a typo? bass is 2 octaves below soprano
+Temmie Shopkeeper yea, you're right, an octave below soprano, my bad
Bari Sax player's tone was amazing!
Simply amazing control, of breathing, technique, tone, rhythm, in fact everything. Just brilliant musicianship!
This is beautiful. As a sax player I am aspiring to be this good and hopefully play this one day
That bari player is amazing
As a 14 year old saxophonist, this stuff is truly inspiring to me. I hope to join the US Army Field Band some day!
as a fan of the army and bach's music, I salute you
This sounds really sublime and saxophone with soft timbre... really leave me in awe
This is easily the best horn arrangement of Little Fugue on TH-cam. Awesome performance, in every sense of the word!
Absolutely amazing! I first heard the Little Fugue performed by the Canadian Brass and you guys blew me away! The final chord is fantastic!
音が皆さん綺麗‼︎😳
Fuck the jazzy, sharp tone.
I love this classical sound, its so sweet
Been a pianist for 7 years. I've was assigned this last Friday for piano and I'm loving it.
***** I don't play organ. Only piano. :(
Never get tired of watching, every day
I play the sax and this just makes me so happy. And it sounds super fricken cool!!
+julee cavazos Awesome! thanks for watching!
Brilliant execution of a wonderful, challenging piece of pure perfection. Well done!
Fantastic!
Bach's music is eternal!
+Neue Ära Very true!
Literally the first army video I like.
Still true.
A wonderful arrangement, and performance, of one of Bach's gems. Thank you for sharing with us!
They all have fantastic tone!
Johann Sebastian Bach would be proud
The saxophonist's tone is smooth, rich, and full!
I love how all of the different colors combine
Everything is just so fluid! I'm a 15 year old saxophonist and I want to join United States Field Army Band
+Roman Roberts Keep on practicing and you may just win the job someday!
+The United States Army Field Band I sure will, and I hope I win it too.

WOW The bari sounds incredible, as does everyone else
Thanks for watching!
Nice circular breathing for the bari.
Joshua Sobel the bari part doesn't really require circular breathing
Nick Sopko no, but nonetheless, he did a good job with it.
Joshua Sobel I think he was circular breathing to better match the phrasing of the organ where obviously organ players don't have to pause to breathe but wind players do.
Mason T that would make sense
literally my favorite piece to play soprano. this was great!
You should try playing this tone with a swing stly it's actually really fun.
+Am He Very cool idea! Thanks for sharing!

It's a lot of combined practice time for sure. Thank you!
the sound of the tenor sax doh. mind blowing
God bless our country and our brave soldiers
Played this in College at UGA under Buddy Deans (Student of Sigurd M. Rascher) with a 12 piece Saxophone Ensemble! Enjoyed it!
This is my favourite piece by Bach and you've done it more than enough justice! Keep up the good work!

SO BEAUTIFUL
Wonderful!
Greetings from Serbia
Talk about finesse! Amazing!
Simply amazing! Thank you for inspiring my children.
IT'S NOT A SONG, IT'S A FUGUE.

boy do I have some news for you: it’s called slang!
@@nihilanthropus I mean, technically this piece DOES use four "voices."

Truly an amazing quartet. Outstanding job, gentlemen.
This really is a classy performance!
Is it just me or the alto sax looks insanely attractive....
That was BEAUTIFULLY done.Greetings and best wishes from India
Thanks guys. Keep the sax stuff up!
osborl12 Our pleasure. So glad you enjoyed!
Everything is perfect and tempo was marvelous. Great work.
Love this. Trying to play along with it but my fingers do not move fast enough even at 75%. But I am working on it.

Our saxophone section definitely agrees!
Although I do not play saxophone, I love this..

Bach did it first (in 1700)!
