We tried that years ago and it only killed about half the fleas. The best, 100% guaranteed way to get rid of ALL your fleas is to sprinkle table salt on your carpet and place bowls of water in each room, the salt dehydrates the fleas, they jump into the water a end up drowning. The salt breaks down into a fine powder without ruining your carpet and all you have to do is vacuum it up when you’re done. We had an infestation that was so bad the exterminator wanted thousands to to take care of and we did it for less then $10.

What I have been using is a large flat metal pan that you can get at a feed store or farm supply that is used for feeding livestock or chickens. It is about 18" in diameter and 3 inches deep. I put about an inch of water mixed with some dish soap, and a candle in the middle. Set it in the middle of the room at night. The candle attracts the fleas, they jump at the candle, land in he water and sink. Works 100%.

  • @SpiritBear12
    @SpiritBear12 6 ปีที่แล้ว +591

You don't need Dawn, any dish soap/detergent will work. The detergent works in 2 ways. The first way is it breaks down the surface tension on the water. Fleas can be light enough to float on top of water, but the detergent makes the water wetter in essence and thus the fleas fall right into the water rather than being able to float and be dry. Now they can't breathe.
The second thing the detergent does is break down the waxy coating fleas (and other arthropods) have on their bodies. Insects and arachnids don't breathe through their face like most animals do. They have tiny holes in their abdomens called Spiracles. Their abdomens move in and out to exchange air much like our lungs expend and contact to do the same thing. With arthropods the waxy coating is supposed to protect the body from too much water absorbing through their exoskeleton and spiracles. The detergent breaks down that wax letting water seep into their body and spiracles so they drown.
I suggest you get some diatomaceous earth and finely sprinkle that stuff all over your floors, esp the carpeted ones. Diatomaceous earth is a fine gray/tan colored powder that is naturally mined from the earth. It is comprised of fossilized diatoms which were single celled creatures that lived in the oceans and still do. When fossilized their bodies are sharp, like broken glass though harmless to us. However, this dust is harmful to arthropods (insects, arachnids). When arthropods walk through the diatomaceous earth it sticks to them. As it coats their bodies it literally cuts through their exoskeletons letting air getting in where it's not supposed to and dries them out. It does the same thing to the eggs of the offending creatures.
Sprinkle this earth all over the floor using a fine sieve and close off that room for about 3 days. Keep pets out of rooms with the earth on the floor. Even though it's non toxic and natural, you don't want it in the eyes of your animals because their heads are much closer to the floors than ours are. After 3-4 days, vacuum the heck out of that room.
If you can seal the doors with tape, the fleas can't get out of that room. Try to do as many rooms as you can at once to kill as many fleas as you can at once.
I kind of miss having pets, but I do not miss flea infestations, or ticks.

If you can't find diatomaceous earth, you can use plain old Borax. Definitely keep pets away from Borax even though it is also a product of the earth, you don't want your pets rolling in it and licking it off of their fur or getting in their eyes. Use it the same, sprinkle it all over the floors. What it does is it acts like salt and pulls moisture out of the bodies of the fleas and dries them up, same with their eggs.
You may have to do cycles of this as the fleas lay eggs, hatch, grow and do their life cycle again. It will take time to wipe them all out, so you have to be diligent! Bedding must be washed in really hot water and dried the same. The hardest thing to free of fleas is soft furniture like couches with fabric coverings. If you have vinyl or leather upholstery, it's easier to wipe out the fleas. Wash the animal's bedding in really hot water too. You have to wage an all out assault/war on them! If you slack in your attacks, they'll be back.

Hey Michelle, I’m in Florida too, Orlando area. Sorry to hear about your flea problem, but glad to hear it’s working... we tried everything, and to be fair, everything did help. But when we started doing the traps it really started knocking them out. We kept the traps going day & night until they were gone. Another thing that seemed to help was to sprinkle baking soda on the carpets, then use s broom to sweep it in. Then repeat after every time you vacuum. The baking soda acts as a “desiccant” which dries out the eggs and fleas.

Great share. Really important to use same solution and wipe down all the floor base boards in every room. Cedar chips are also great to add to pet beds. My kids were always bringing home stray pets. So glad that compassion started there and moved onto helping people with sock's, blanket's and jacket's. Love the little things that grow big hearts.

Years ago when i got my first puppy my house was so infested with fleas that when you went to crawl in bed it felt like static on your legs. I bombed the house 4 times. The fleas partied...lol...didnt kill one. I used raid flying insect spray...hold your breath and spray the entire room on the floor as you back out. Then shut the door. Repeat once aweek for about 4 weeks. All fleas...eggs...larvae gone. And i treated the dog

I have also at home a wood workshop 😊 and 3 cats. This trap works very well. The plastic tray I used with a candle in the middle was 40x30 cm and there was like hundreds of them!!! Thanks!!!!!!

It's important to use a white plate for more reflection. Mix the Dawn in a cup before pouring, it's a bit easier. You can just add a little water when it evaporates. You will have to move the plate from room to room or use more than one plate and repeat the process in two weeks as that is the cycle of reproduction. We have 7 indoor cats and it works, believe me! Be careful not to have the lamp too close to the plate, if the water gets too hot it will discourage the fleas, about 12 to 18 inches with a 40 or 60 max. watt bulb. Don't worry the cats won't touch it, they will stay clear! Good post, thanks!

Fwiw- l started treating our yard along with the dogs 15yrs ago and could count on one hand the low amount of fleas our dogs had since. Remarkable how much treating dogs & the yard both made, seven in the slow release form was a blessing.
Amazing video, weird how Dawn kills them so fast because I worked in a grooming parlor (bather) and it took awhile for any flea dip to kill them. Easier on skin than Dawn I guess? Great vid!
Update: Like to add you should always avoid eyes and ears when bathing animals.
Start at the neck, then quickly do their hind end and work your way to their mid section and let it soak several minutes before rinsing. Fleas will run inside every orifice as soon as water hits them so you have to be fast here.
    Just remember:
    1) "Never soak their head" to avoid water in ears. Water causes ear infections!
    2) "Never" start washing one end and go to the opposite end". Never do that, as this chases fleas inside them that come back out later, nasty sorry but its true!
Rinse very well, dry soap makes them itch as bad as fleas did.

Denise Wright I have to agree, in fact I spent $170 to get 3 months worth of topical frontline at petsmart for my dog & cat a few years ago & it didn't begin to get rid of the issue in theend I went to the vet & spent about $400 to have each of them treated they had to use a chewable tab that was even more expensive than the usual topical stuff I got at the vet because I'd already put frontline on them & that was one of the ingredients in the topical they normally gave me. I also sprayed the entire backyard & every baseboard doorway window in the house as well as putting off flea bombs in every room of the entire home. The vet said the fleas are mutating every year they are coming out with a new med to kill them it's insane & especially awful & expensive. It's definitely better to justthrow down at the end of summer & get the strongest chewable or topical the vet has to keep it fromever happening again, living in the city was the worst half the people don't ever give there animals the proper care they need & are just running around with animals covered in fleas & filled with worms it's extremely disheartening.

im seriously about to do this in every room of my house. i went to the vet and got flea medicine, so i gave all 4 of my cats a bath in their flea shampoo and put the medicine on them. i washed all of my bedding, vaccumed my carpets twice and washed my carpets, and now fleas are jumping off of my animals instead of dying from the medicine. thankyou so much for this i really hope it helps!

Zoë Rimel oh it’s works, just make sure you don’t use LED bulbs because they don’t put out any heat... fleas are like heat seeking missiles. We used the curly CFL bulbs and they worked great. Keep the traps going day and night until they are gone. You have to go through a cycle where the existing eggs hatch and then head for the traps. Also sprinkle salt or baking soda on the carpets and use a broom to sweep it in. Wait a couple of days then vacuum and repeat... the sodium dries out the fleas and eggs. Hang in there, you’ve got this. 👍🏻✊🏻

This helps a lot. I've had a burning hatred of fleas since I was a teenager, after seeing half a litter of kittens die from fatal anemia. They belonged my girlfriend's family, who didn't know what the cause was until it was too late. The last kitten that died had passed away in my arms when we were trying to find an animal service to call.
The point is, I currently have an 18 year old cat, who is generally pretty healthy, but had been acting strange lately. She's old, but her loss of energy was unusually sudden. I checked her for fleas, and there they were. After administering a dose of flea medicine and cleaning my home, they came back within the week.
I really don't want to lose my cat to these parasitic creatures, so I'd like to say thank you for the great advice. I'll be going to the store to look for some lamps
